OS X V10.4 :: Fresh Reinstall Of Tiger And HD Is Corrupt
Apr 2, 2012First some background info:
-Running a Late 2006 macbook 2,1 with original RAM (512x2) and original OSX installation DVD.
-2009 I upgraded the RAM to 2GB+1GB, and upgraded the HDD to a 320GB HDD.
-2011 First the battery died, then the 320GB HDD failed, making a clicking sound. I plugged it in an external bay and sure enough, still clicking. Macbook dead for 6 months.
-2012 So now I bought a new OCX Vertex 120GB SSD, along with a new battery.
I boot from install DVD and format the SSD to journaled. I install the original OSX tiger (excluding disk space pigs like printer drivers, language translation, and some large 'bundled programs' like iDVD, garageband etc) After OSX install, setting up the macbook etc, I am logged in and running fine. However, I have found through trial and error (I have reformatted and reinstalled the OS at least 10 times now trying to figure out *** is going wrong) that if I reboot, I get either (1) flashing question mark folder, or (2) kernel error, unable to find driver for platform ACPI, and the macbook will not boot.I then boot from install DVD and run disk utility.. and find that the SSD has an error: 'Invalid node structure. The volume needs to be repaired' however it cannot be repaired, it has to be reformatted.I have it working right now, and it will work until I go to reboot. And right now if I browse the SSD, there are files on it. 5GB are used, 107GB available. To check the SSD earlier, I even reformatted as ms-dos and stuck the SSD in an external bay and copied files back and forth using a windows machine no problem. then reformatted to journaled, installed OSX, and back to same 'invalid node structure' issue.I even tried different RAM. I upgraded last year, but to make sure I am starting from original system, I reinstalled the original 512MB chips that came with it when I bought in 2006.

Jan 11, 2008I have an Emac. I'm angry because the Ipods don't work with Panther. I don't think it's worth upgrading the OS, but if I was, which one would I want? Mine is 1Ghz and 768 MB so it meets the requirements for 10.5, but would it run better with 10.4?

Jun 5, 2012I jsut did a fresh install. wanted to use my SL DVD but the MBP i5 refused to star with it so I used the original DVD (10.5) and upgraded with the SL DVD to 10.6. However after the initial SL Installation, it tried from the SL DVD and this failed. I did a manual restart, starting from the HD and everything ran fine. however today I note there is a locked file on the HD named Mac OS X Install Data. It contains 181 .pkg files.Now I suppose this should have been moved or deleted as part of the install process. Can I move them to a file where they belong?

Jan 6, 2009Sometime ago, I installed MAC OSX Tiger 10.4 onto my E Mac (CPU Power PC G4.1.1). It functioned OK for a couple of years, but then began freezing.
We tried to re-install the OSX system from an external DVD drive and although it registered the Install DVD, it would never boot from it. Eventually, we used my son's Mac laptop as a slave and reinstalled.Unfortunately, the computer still freezes randomly. It seems worse when pulling things from the dock (eg: Word files, Firefox etc.) or when pull down menus appear.

OS X :: How Often Do You Have To Do A Fresh Install?
Aug 22, 2009I'm currently a Windows user and I'm researching for buying a Mac (I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy it).
My question is how often do you have to do a fresh install, if at all? I do a fresh install every couple of months on my Windows desktop to keep things speedy. i also defrag every 2 weeks. Do you all do this with OS X?
My other question is how often do you reboot or shutdown? I reboot my desktop maybe 3 times a week and the rest of the time its in sleep when I'm not using it.

Nov 25, 2009i just got a used mac g5 dual with no hard drive, thus no os.
I bought a sata drive, used macdrive on my pc to format it to hsf extended. installed it in the mac tower.
put in my osx 10.4 install disk (after holding down mouse button at startup), and i'm looking at - not an install screen - but a screen with a folder icon in the midle that flashes the mac finder icon.
i'm guessing the disk is not being seen for the install.
i tried pressing 'c' at startup, i get a gray screen for a moment and then it goes to the folder screen again.
my question is: how do i do a fresh install on a mac? do i need a certain os version to start from scratch?

Aug 2, 2009I just replaced my boot drive, only to realize that I am not even able to boot to the OSX install disk with the GTX 285 installed... I had the same symptom when I first got the card, because you have to install the evga drivers prior to installing the card.
So... the question... is there anyway to do a fresh OSX install with the GTX 285 installed, ther than putting a card Apple supports?

Oct 9, 2010So yesterday I decided to reformat my new MBP. I had it dual booting with Win7 and I just didn't like how hot my MBP got so I got rid of it. So I decided to reformat and pop in a fresh install of OSX, but I'm not sure if I reinstalled it properly. The reason why I say this is cause traditionally when reformatting my previous macs I would just follow the steps of the CD where then formatting the drive option was part of the step if I remember correctly. This time after putting in the OSX cd once it reboot.
I had to go to the utilities option select my drive to format or it would just reinstall the OS over top what was already there. After installing I noticed I had to rename my drive as well cause it was unknown. I never had to rename my drive before, so I'm not sure if I did this properly. So did I correctly format my MBP? Is there another way to do this to bring it back to exact factory specs? If not can someone let me know how to properly format my MBP?

The thing is, I don't want to go through the process of reinstalling all the software and getting my settings back to the point where they are now (it takes years of fine tuning to get it to work how you want it to!).

I never imagined that I would use as my primary drive, it was just an afterthought. I wanted to switch to a larger drive and I was going to clone it to save time. MacBook Pro :: Hanging When Trying To Install Fresh OS X?
Nov 16, 2009So to make a long story short Just traded my buddy my blackbook and some cash for this 09 uMBP. I ordered an Intel SSD for it that is supposed to be here Wednesday. I figured while i was waiting i could install a fresh copy of OS X on it and get it set up just how I wanted it then use CCC to image it. That way Wednesday when the SSD gets here I can just pop it in and use the image from CCC to load everything up and I would be set.
When I throw the OS X DVD in and click the first icon to install OS it says you have to restart. I click yes and it does. the screen with the apple and the little swirly status icon shows up and both the DVD drive and hard drive are spinning. it hangs here for about a minute and a half to 2 minutes. Then the DVD drive and HDD stop spinning and the screen goes black. like it is going to sleep. You hit the space bar or keyboard and then the HDD and DVD drive start spinning again like it is going to boot up but the screen stays black. both HDD and DVD drive continiue to spin for about 30 seconds then stop. Still all black screen.
durring this time everything is locked up. you cant get the DVD to eject, nothing. You have to hold the power button for a solid minute or 2 and it finally reboots (not a shut down but a reboot).
As soon as it reboots if you leave the DVD in it does the exact same thing as above. Apple logo for about 2 minutes then black screen. If you hit the Eject button IMMEDIATELY as the apple logo comes on it will eject the OS X DVD and boot normally. I have done it about 6 times now and it just keeps haning if the DVD is in the drive.

I have the partition with with the Recovery HD, I assume it is Lion 10.7.2. Since I only have the Snow Leopard DVD, what would be the easiest and better method doing a Lion 10.7.3 fresh install?
