OS X :: Firewire Connection Really Necessary For The System?
Dec 28, 2008
is the connection really necessary? I am about to go pick up a 500GB USB external hard drive at Target. Will I be completely dissatisfied while I am backing up my data without Firewire?

I have a MacPro Early 2009, 2 ethernet ports.Ethernet 1 is connected to the LAN and Ethernet 2 is connected directly to a SSL Matrix console (an audio mixer), whom driver needs the used ethernet port to be first of the list in the Network connections list in System Preferences. So when I browse internet I can't use the Matrix's software, and vice versa.I had to create 2 different network positions to browse internet and to work with SSL Matrix, one with Eth 1 first place, another one with Eth 2 first place, and I always have to swap positions. Is there a way to force OSX to use by default the 2nd connection of the list for internet access?

over the past 4 years I've had two Western Digital Mybook Hard drives. They both have died after turning 2 years old. I feel like giving another company a go even though I know lifespans aren't very long on any hard drive. I've been looking at Lacie hard drives because they support firewire 800 but they are a tad bit more expensive. I don't mind paying the extra money if I can get more than two years out of it. I am looking for a 1TB hard drive with fire wire 800 connection. I'll be using it primarily as my time machine backup but with a 1TB I may partition it as well and store some other media on there.

I have a new iMac purchased in Q1 2014 and connect my G-Grive to it via an Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter. My iMac runs 24x7 and this FireWire 800 hard drive connection drops out on a regular basis - I'd say maybe once every week or so leading to a dismounted drive and an unavailable iTunes library. I have a slightly newer USB3 G-Drive which is connected by the USB socket next to the TB socket on my iMac. This one doesn't drop out/dismount. I cannot tell if it is a software issue or a physical (cable movement issue), the plug has never been out and I can't deliberately disconnect it at will by wobbling the cable/plug.
So, evidence and experimentation suggests the physical connection is not the issue. This problem has only come about after switching from a physical FW800 connection (my old iMac) to working via a TB adaptor (my new iMac). I'd rather not replace with more USB3 G-Drives (lack of free ports) and I'm not sure if I want to invest in a TB drive if the connections cannot be relied upon. I've seen lots of complaints of TB-FW800 connections dropping on MacBooks but did not see a specific solution. .

I am trying to transfer files applications data etc from an intel iMac i5 running OS X 10.6.8 to a Macbook Pro i7 running OS X 10.7.3 and having trouble with migration assistant. When I restart the iMac holding the T key it just opens to the usual desktop. If I start up holding the T key I get the grey screen with the firewire, thunderbold icon. Either way the Macbook does not seem to recognise the iMac in the migration assistant so I cannot proceed with file transfer. I have tried the above with different cables, just in case it was the cable.

I am not a huge Mac guy, but have to use them at work? Our Mac Pro lacks enough firewire ports for the configuration I need to do. So I guess I need to get a firewire 800 card and it will only be used in conjunction with out AJA unit (HD video production), so if it has one or four ports it doesn't really matter. Anyone have a brand or specific card they prefer?

Someone switched off the power to my iMac the other day. Since I've rebooted:a] System Profiler shows no awareness of FireWire ("Unable to list FireWire devices" in red) b] Every boot takes about five minutes, 3+ of which seems to be spent waiting for a response from the FireWire socket (the logs show a 3-minute gap followed by a line that goes something like this:"/usr/lib/exec/hidd: Timeout waiting for IOKit to be quiet")
c] if it's idle long enough to go to sleep, it goes into a kernel panic (the last line in the log before the panic says"kernel[0]: IOPMSlotsMacRISC4::determineSleepSupport has canSleep true")b] looks connected to a], but I can't see any connection with c] (apart from the reference to IO).

According to the Guides section of the forum, the built in iSight cams use a USB bus connection to the system. Has anyone ever "harvested" the iSight from broken iMacs or MacBooks and wired them for external use? I would imagine that they'd make great fixed focus surveillance cams.

Was told to go to the control panel of my windows operating system and go to surround settings and make sure that the speaker set up is set to 5.1 surround. By default it is set to 2 speaker output. How do I find its equivalent in the mac os x i.e the control panel that will permit me to set my speaker set up to 5.1 surround?

I currently have my second MBP that I got from Macmall and both in a matter of two weeks have had similar issues. The first I managed to get returned and replaced, that is a seperate and complicated story in and of itself. This particular issue started with a boot up sequence that was taking about 5-6 mins. After going through the drill with Applecare thought I could restore using Time Machine. That's when I found out that the FW400 port no longer worked to power my Oyen Digital 250G FW drive. Any thoughts as to what might be the problem? This is my second MBP and Oyen Digital FW drive. I had them both replaced!

I just got a Mac Mini (March 2009 model) and want to connect it via Firewire to my Sony TRV-22 camcoder. The camcorder has a Mini DV Firewire jack on it (I think this is called a 4-pin connector sometimes too). But on the Mac Mini, I can't tell if I need a 6-pin or a 9-pin. Can someone point me to a good cable so I can dump some MiniDV tapes into iMovie?

Since upgrading to Lion I've had the problem with wi fi losing connection and this seems to be common? The Apple support talked me through a change in system config. I'm no expert and not sure if I could repeat if needed. The support desk could not guarantee that this will permanently fix the problem though.

I googled it and it didn't help out as much. I have this Shure Mic and it has MIDI input and would like to have some kind of adapter to firewire. I know there is an USB adapter, but i would like to use firewire. It can be firewire 400 or 800. I like to record some songs for GarageBand.

I have a somewhat old Seagate FreeAgent external drive (like this).
It has a switchable port controller, one has a USB2 and eSATA and the other has two FireWire 400 ports [URL].
Now, on the FW controller it says "Dual FireWire 400".
What is Dual FireWire 400? And does it implicate that I can use both ports together somehow and get FW800 by that?

I just got the external harddrive "Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex USB 3.0 1TB" with a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Upgrade Kabel FireWire 800. I have neither a USB 3.0, nor a Firewire 800 on my white macbook (2008). I already know, that it's possible to use USB 3.0 with an USB 2.0 port, but I would like to use it with the firewire to spare the USB port for other devices. My question: Is there an adapter or cable to use the Seagate Firewire 800 with my Firewire 400 port? I don't know, where and what to look for.

i just thought it was compatible because it said it was made for the mac and i really wanted to use my surround sound system. So my dilemma is that it came with a firewire 400 cable and I have a firewire 800 port on my mac mini which i bought recently. I've looked for some adapters and I saw one that said it accepts male firewire 400 6 pin and at the other end is a 9 pin firewire 800. it says its designed to connect your firewire 400 cable so it can be used in firewire 800 ports for newer macs. I'm not 100 percent sure what all that means and I didn't want to go buy something without being sure that's what I need.

I have a Time Capsule wirelessly connected to my iMac. Since I've encountered some problems with backups because of intermittent wifi connection failures, I want to switch to a wired connection with an ethernet cable. I know I could fiddle with the wifi channels etc. but since the TC is just sitting next to my iMac anyway, I could profit from the higher bandwidth of a wired connection as well. Two questions:
1. What exactly do I have to do to make the switch? Are there any new settings I have to apply? Create a new network?
2. Will I still be able to use the wifi connection to get on the internet using my smartphone?

The internal modem in my PowerBook Pro (mid 2010) shows up as "not connected" in the Network pane of system preferences, but I can't figure out how to get it to connect. When I enter my phone number and click the connect button, I get an error message: "Network Connection The communication device selected for your connection does not exist. Verify your settings and try reconnecting." Say what? It says it exists in the System Preferences, shows it in the list on the left. How can it not exist?

I recently purchased (as in days ago) a refurbished 13" Macbook Pro. I just noticed today that my wireless connection on my Macbook Pro has been losing it's connection about every other 2-3 minutes. I was on iChat with a buddy this morning, and I must have been disconnected and then reconnected about 8 times in 20 minutes. I first thought it must have been a problem with iChat. That said, I have sat here looking at my screen for the past ten minutes, and I have seen the Airport wireless indicator disconnect and then reconnect again at least three times in the past ten minutes.
I have AT&T U-Verse Service, and I am forced to use their provided 2WIRE router. That said, I have had no problems with any other device that uses the wireless connection, from my iPhone to my PS3. I work from home and have my HP laptop literally sitting right next to my Macbook, and it has not disconnected once from the same wireless connection, whereas my Macbook has literally disconnected at least 20 times.

I'm on holiday using my mobile phone (Nokia N80) to connect to the Internet over GPRS / EDGE / UMTS. Everything works like a charm, but often the Internet Connect applet drops the connection and just hangs disconnecting.
I'm running OS X 10.4.7 on a 17" Macbook pro, but I have the same result on a iBook G4, same OS X version, and even trying with a different mobile phone (Nokia 6600) and different network service provider.

I was wondering if Time Capsule can operate with UPS via USB connection (like QNAP or Synology or FreeNAS) ?
Is there some option for it in firmware ?
I have the USB cable to connect the UPS to computer / other, and UPS can work this way ( Smart APC 650 ).
If not, i was wondering if Apple could add this function. I have AP client, 3 hard disks and 3com gigabit switch connected to TC. It would be nice if TC could check the power status of UPS, and work with it.

Two computers in the house MacBook and iMac, running on an Airport Extreme network, which includes an Airport Express plugged into the stereo.
A brief power outage the other night (perhaps unrelated), and in the morning, the network was wonky: the iMac was only getting two or three bars, streaming radio to the Express kept flickering on and off. When that happens, rebooting the Airport base station, the router, and the Express usually takes care of it.
Since the reboot, the iMac hasn't been able to keep a connection to the network, and often can't find it. It may start off, but then loses the connection and then times out trying to reconnect. Or the network doesn't even appear in the list. Read that launching Network and running Diagnostic will fix problems and it sometimes does, but never for long.
All this time except for one brief bit where it suffered the same problem the MacBook has had no problem connecting to the network and the Internet.
Have rebooted everything multiple times in various orders, run Disk Utility, and even gone ahead and upgraded the iMac to Snow Leopard (laptop was recently upgraded).
