I have a problem with files opening very slow on or mac. All the files reside on a PC server. When we go to open the Illustrator files form the PC server to our Macs, it takes an extremely long time. We also have the issue with file names being limited to 35 characters.

I'm usuing a new mac mini with lion server as a file sharing server (smb) with multiple machines with both W7 and XP. My problem is accessing SolidWorks files from the PC. I can drag the files to the desktop and then they will open but if I try to open them from SolidWorks it doesn't work. It looks like other are having this problem with SolidWorks and office. It also looks like in the last update (10.7.3) they might have fixed the issues with office but I can't find anything about SolidWorks issues being solved. I didn't have this problem before when I was using an older mini server with snow leopard but ever since I have made the switch to a new machine with lion server I've had this problem.

We had a mac which was on Leopard and saved files to the serverÂ
The file system we use is a Windows 2008 File Server, this has worked fine with leopard for years
However I understand that Leopard splits the files into resource forks - and that Lion has dropped support for these files. That particular mac is now on Lion as we upgraded and encountering LOTS of issuesÂ
I unable to open or edit lots of the files as i believe chunks of the files are missing. E.g an .eps file showed as 740KB on leopard - Viewing from a windows PC it was 730kb for the .eps and 10kb for the ._ resource fork.Â
Now that we are on the LION upgrade, we only see the .eps file and it is only 730kb. Information missing is things such as preview (quark), Font data, type of file, version number. we have hundreds! of images, files etc created with leopard and now upgraded to lion they all have become useless!
Rejoining the resource forks and files together so that they are usable on lion

Every action that I try to do like clicking on the apple in the upper left it freezes showing a spinning wheel and it will take time to show the drop down options. I checked disk utility and it said that HD is ok, done verify/permission verify and repair.
I checked the activity monitor noting the ram/CPU usage and its normal it even tells that 2GB of ram is not use.It shows not responding in the activity monitor if you open an app for around 5mins then it opens or it will crash.I already done the 2 kinds of reset and did not work.BUT it opens normally in Safe mode.Â

Everytime I time to open a PDF file in Preview I get the msg, the file couldn't be opened because you don't have permission to view it. I have checked the GET INFO and all permissions are correct.

i've just bought my new mac pro, i'm very happy with it's performance, but there is 1 small little tiny problem, i've ordered my mac pro with wireless card, but my wireless connection is very slow , every web page i open it take minutes to open, before i had an imac, the wireless connenction was super fast, then i've sold it to my dad , but my new mac pro is very slow, mention that it's in the same room and in the same place my imac was.
i've check my bluetooth, i've send and receive some files with my bluetooth to my moblie, it was great, but when i copy files from my brothers computer it was slow and then it stucks , with my imac this never happens.i opened my mac pro to check the wireless card and i found this:-
antenna 1 was in the bluetooth card.
antenna 2 was in the upper wireless card.
antenna 3 was in the lower wireless card.
the weird thing i've found is that my speed connection it goes fast and then is goes slow then fast then slow, it's not stable, another weird thing is that my wireless speed is slow then when i press the wireless bars it goes fast then it returns slow again.this is a really lousy service from apple to make the wireless card as optional , it's really unfair i mean it is the most powerfull mac ever and wireless is not included one more question, is there a difference between the wireless card in the imac and in the mac pro?
I have had two files to appear on my desktop. They appear to be Excel files but I cannot open them in Excel or with any program. When I click on my hard rive and highlight the desktop, these two files are not listed but they are there visually.

I use a Mac Mini to launch iTunes with library saved in an external drive. Now my Mac Mini retires and I replaced it with a new one. I launch iTunes on the new Mac and reconnect to the library in the external drive.Â
How come my wav files are shown in correct albums in old Mac but shown in unknown albums in new Mac? What must I transfer from the old mac to new mac show wav files in their right places?Â
I have tried importing the library xml file but it didn't work.Â
I have 1 tb data drive on server for student files but only using 40gb and says out of space. I cannot figure out where the space is located.

I had a goodworking SUS (10.6.8) working but the drive is getting full so i change the location of the files to another disk (in the xserve)and follow instructions from Apple (page 84 from the manual System Imaging) sudo cp -p /private/var/db/swupd/html /Volumes/My_Volume/My_Software_Updates_Folder/This works and i copy the files to a new drive. View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently attained a new client for IT support, and they have a xserve running Mac 10.4.11, for which the previous IT company supporting it did not give them the admin password. Also they don't have any restore discs of any kind. What I would like to do is wipe the server and upgrade to the newest version, because currently there are only two people touching the server, so now would be an optimal time to do the upgrade before it increases to more. But my main concern is getting access to the files of other users on the server so that I can copy them to an external hard drive, (i'm from the PC environment so essentially taking ownership of the files). What is the best way for me to do this in the Mac world?

When I opened safari my homepage was apple and it opened using the middle of the display with the desktop screensaver visable on both sides of the page now it opens adn takes up the whole screen I don't know how to resize it and save it where it will open to the same all the time. I am in charge of a building level network at a primary (k-2) school. The problem I am having with our computer labs is that the student logons are extremely slow. The lab is running Emacs with 1.25 G4. 512 DDR, and Mac OSX 10.4.7 Appletalk, Bonjour, and LDAPv3 are enabled in Directory Access. They are also running DHCP for their IP. The server is a Xserv running Mac OSX Server 10.4.7 with 2 ghz G5 and 512 ddr.
I recently upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.7 on the server. There is one drive that maps on logon. The dock, System Preferences, and logon are managed for the students in Workgroup Manager. They are all directly connected to 10/100 switch my office/server room/switch closet. Dose anyone know a way I can make the network logons faster? It is taking almost 2 to 3 minutes for an average student to load. The funny thing is it is very sporadic. Sometimes they will get on quick and all is well. Some times it tells me their home folder is missing or the dock has all kinds of stuff it�s not supposed to have. Sometimes they can�t even logon! It dose not seem to be a specific computer�. Its random on what logon times or if the student account will work.
I have a 2008 MBP with 4gb of RAM. I upgraded via fresh install to Lion and ever since I've had this computer running literally 1/2 the speed it did on Snow Leopard. I've tried Googling and done everything everyone was saying to do but no changes. I also noticed that no matter what I do, when I run disk utility and check permissions it comes back with files that have problems but nothing I do will actually repair them. I'd also like to know if there is any way to turn off the absolutely dumb full screen apps and mission control and launch pad stuff as i'm sure that all the extra graphics requirements has to be hurting my performance a bit. I'm not sure what all the desktop developers have been smoking lately but last I checked a computer was not a phone and trying to mimic the interface is just dumb. There is nothing useful about anything they've done in Lion that I can see. It all looks cool but trying to use it on a daily basis it just stinks. Even the full-screen apps that I though would be cool stinks because it takes longer to swith from one to the other and you loose the top menu while in it which requires extra effort just to see what time it is.Â

I've been having trouble downloading files from an ftp server (URL) on Finder and while it does fully download eventually, it takes a while and if I click the x to stop it, the download won't stop. Is this a known problem with Finder, is it a glitch, or is it my internet connection.
View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter some searching, I've seen three tricks: disabling IPV6 on the Mac, doing the same on the PC (my Windows Server 2003 installation didn't have it installed), and adding a line to my /etc/smb.conf file. None seem to really give me full transfer speeds.
Are there any tricks specific to Windows Server 2003 or anything new to make this work like normal? It's simple file transfer over SMB, seems like at the 5th iteration of Mac OS X we'd have better speeds.
I'm running Lion Server on a Mac Mini and using SMB to share files between the server and both Windows and Mac machines. I can't figure out why I can only get 2 Mb/s transfer speeds between the server and the other machines. I'm quite certain I'm not limited by my network and the disk write speeds clearly exceed 2 Mb/s. Possible to boost this speed or is this an actual limit of SMB or Lion Server?

For a few weeks now, I can no longer send E-mails using my apple mail program and my iCloud mail address. The error message I get is "cannot send message using the server ...@mac.com (iCloud)". When I get the error message, I can start the "connection doctor", but it takes more than 5 minutes until the doctor eventually establishes a connection "Connection and login to server succeeded".

I have suddenly, since Friday 2 March, experienced very slow connection to one of my ISP's mailservers. Emails without attachments work ok'ish (a little "hesitantly"), emails with attachments of moderate sizes (eg. +/- 500 KB) download/upload extremely slowly and most of the time fail. I have asked my ISP, who are generally helpful, and they have tested the mailserver and can find nothing wrong. So, here we go: The problem is both for ethernet and wireless.The problem is for one account only. I have a different account with the same ISP, but on a different mailserver, which works absolutely fine.Two different Macs have the same problem. The other PCs with different ISP's accounts work fine.Router is working fine with good internet connection and email via one of the two accounts works fine.It is not a problem on my computer (since it is the same issue for two machines). Both run OSX 10.6.8I have tried both Entourage and Outlook on both machines; same problem everywhere - one account works, the other doesn't (properly).I have tried with my iPhone, using the same wireless connection and same account details, and it downloads emails with attachments speedily - emails that failed to download on the MBP/Outlook.I have tried one of the machines (a MacBook Pro) at home with a different wireless connection but to the same mailserver and it works fine there!This happened last Friday and no settings have been changed locally for months. My conclusion is (but may be wrong): The router is fineThe macs are fineThe email clients are fineGeneral connection to internet and mail is fineThe mailserver is probably fine But a connection between one mailserver account and the two macs has suddenly gone wrong. As I am sure you all know text edit sucks.But it automatically opens all my RTFs.I have to manually get word to open them which is a pain in the ass.How can I fix this so that all RTF's are automatically opened by WORD?I am still on the old version of word because I have to use ENDNOTE - which has no support for Word 2011 right now. I have a copy of 2011 sitting on my desk and I am itching to use it, but I will loose 200+ citations if I do.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've switched to mac around December and everything was working so fine till 5 days ago. First I can say I have the 24'' 3.06 processor 4 gb of ram and 500 gb hdd from which 40 gb free space.
5 days ago I've noticed that when I was watching movies with vlc the program was pausing, chocking and I was soLving the issue by ff a few seconds. The next couple of days was the same and I've noticed as well that mac os x v.10.5.7 was loading slower and slower. Last night I've restarted and the startup screen came up with the apple logo and the little dots circle that was showing it's loading. Waited more than one hour and nothing happened. Restarted with the mac os install disc and went to disk utility. Done the disk verify - all ok, no problems. Did the permissions verify and found some of them but after I did the repair permissions I did another verify and was finding the same problems. Anyway shut down everything got upset. Restarted this morning and I took like 10 min to load up and finally the icons showing up. But now evrything I do the beachball is keep spinning and when it stop and I try to click something it's spinning again. For ex I've deleted an icon from dock in 3 min, i've openned a finder window in 5 min, I'm trying to install onyx.dmg and I've clicked like 10 min ago and it's still loading. (( Btw I have the windows as well in another partition and everything is working fine there as it supossed to work. Was thinking to reinstall mac os from the disk but I don't have anything backed up! On the cd install says that I can reinstall mac os as duplicate and will put the old one in a separate folder or something but I still don't know if will erase all my data.
