OS X :: Disk Memory Full But Can't Move Anything To Trash?
Mar 16, 2009
My 50GB memory is unexpectedly showing full on my Macbook Pro but when I go to move anything to Trash it's not registering it at all i.e. when I open Trash it is empty and when I press empty, nothing is happening. I have just spent an hour trying to cull my Itunes folder only to find that it isn't registering any changes because the disk is full. Also Spotlight has disappeared from top corner of the screen. Is this all related?

I've suddenly been getting a pop up message that reads "Your startup disk is almost full - you need to make more space available on your start up disk by deleting files"
My hard disk is 320 GB & I've only used 111 GB so far so why is this message popping up & what can I do about it without deleting my precious files?

I was using my Macbook awhile ago and I got a popup message saying my startup disk is full, even though I have 84.05 gigs available. I figured it was a fluke and ignored it. A bit later, I was doing some stuff in Finder and noticed at the bottom where it says my drive's free space, it suddenly went from 84.05 GB free, to zero free, gave me the error message, and went back up to 84.05 gigs free, and it's done this a couple times...and the only thing I was doing was copying a 3 KB text file from a thumb drive. Anyone know WTF is up with that? It definitely is strange and I've never seen it before. I just ran a Verify in Disk Utility and everything checks out, no errors

The disk utility shows only 262 MB of free space available. I have 44 GB of space occupied by the "other" category. What is in this category and how can I free up some space? I can't even download necessary updates because I have no space left!

Yesterday I deleted enough files to give myself at least 2 gigs of free memory and yet today when I opened up my macbook it tells me I have only 190MB left, and yet none of the files that I deleted remain on the computer, and my trash is completely empty.Does anyone know of any sort of 'Detox' kind of program or method to get the Macbook to reanalyse how much memory it really has left? It's done this before, but I haven't figured out a way to snap some sense back in the harddrive to remind it of the fact that it deleted those large files ages ago.

My 24" iMac (2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, running OSX 10.6.1) crashed during a normal shutdown sequence and had to be closed down by holding in the power button. This resulted in three zero kB alias files with random names such as "." in the trash.
I cannot empty these files from the trash by any normal means and the trash icon permanently shows full. The files can be selected but cannot be dragged to the desktop or renamed. Other files put in the trash can be deleted normally.

I drag to the trash icon on the dock does not go into the trash at all. Instead a window opens asking if I am sure I want to delete the item and when I then click delete it is deleted all the same. Previously however the items went into the trash, you could see on the icon that something was in there and I could then decide later if I want to delete it permanently or have it restored.

Every time I try to export a movie in iMovie or burn a disk in iDVD an error message pops up and says that my startup disk is full. So I bought an external hard drive and backed up my mac using Time Machine. Now I want to delete everything off my mac's internal Hard Drive and use my external hard drive so I can empty my disk. Does this make sense? If so will you please tell me how to do so.

'the item "....." cab;t be moved to the Trash because it can't be delete.' The file is just a Safari download icon you often get when downloading a file, and I can't move it or do anything to it, I can't access its info or move it around the desktop.

I have a new MAC with Leopard 10.5. I attached a western digital external disk which has 4 partions. In one of the partitions I copied from my MS PC various documents. I now want to delete them by sending them to the trash. when i move them there, nothing happens as they still remain on the disk. All docs are with the read/write permission. I'm the only user and the docs were placed there with the same user profile that now wants to get rid of them. I also downloaded the TRASHiT software, but the files and folder still do not get moved/killed. What else can I do? I would like to avoid the easy way out which I would presume would be to format the disk again...

I have read all the comments reference removal of Firefox, it doesn't move. I CLICK ON launch Pad, move to the Firefox app, grab it and move it to the trash; the basket expands as it should but the App will not go in; it shoots straight back up to the Grid Position.I've opened the App looking for Locks, Permissions and so on but it just will not go. Even when it is in the Dock and moved over the Trash it doesn't give the warning that it is in use.... it just doesn't want to know.

I have had this proble for awhile and I can not figure it out. The Trash Icon does not change when the trash icon is full or empty, appears to be full at all times even after a secure trash empty. Open up trash and there are no files inside and the file count is zero but the icon on dock remains the full icon.

I'm still trying to get my head around editing in iMovie 09... I'm trying to delete some raw footage I have and I figured out how to do it, now the only problem is... it just doesn't do it. When I filter it to show rejected clips only, and then click on the "Move Rejected to Trash" button, it doesn't do anything.

you can rename, move or even trash a file when you still have it opened in preview or textedit. In win, such action will be stopped by the message "can't do that, the file is open somewhere". Would that data going to be kind of homeless or become a "ghost"?
