OS X :: Deactivating USB Port?
Oct 3, 2005
I switch ports around a bit when I update podcasts on the iPod. The front USB port on the PowerMac would never do an iPod update. I plugged the mouse into the keyboard port and it stated "summary" using too much power and will deactivate port. At this time it doens't work. To no avail I have searched for a method to activate the port. That makes one port on monitor and one on keyboard that do not work. Does anyone have an idea how to make a USB port work?

I had an old PC a few years back on which had iTunes activated. The machine essentially died and I got rid of it before I was able to log on and deactivate iTunes on that machine. Having moved on since then, that activation has lingered and now I need to deactivate it.
I know that there are ways to deactivate all machines, then simply re-activate it on my active ones, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a way - on either iTunes 8 or 9 - to simply deactivate a machine remotely (i.e. deactivate a machine other than the machine I am on).

I recently got my own version of windows 7 from my school for free and decided to give parallels a shot. A little after installing parallels and giving my windows key, I decided I would rather do boot camp and "upgrade" the partition to run in parallels if i needed to. I started the boot camp installation but when it got to asking me for the Windows 7 key, it said the key was invalid now. Is there any way of getting the key back?

I like the Top Site tiles but wish to eliminate selected ones permanently. I never use Craig's List, Expedia, Facebook, etc yet they always appear in the primary Top Sites frame displacing other sites I wish to access. How do I get rid of those unwanted sites? I have OS-Leopard and plan upgrade to SL in a few months.

How many of you would like to see a HDMI Port? Why the miniDisplay port? Why not remove ethernet jack and miniDisplay port and replace it with a HDMI port. That way one HDMI cable feeds digital video AND audio. Am I the only one thinking of this?

I am having issues with my Dual Band 1TB time capsule for some reason the damn ports won't forward I have enabled the correct settings with the ip address and the ports, but when I use a program to test if the ports are open they are always closed, regardless on pc or mac. Does anyone have a solution to this? I even reset my Time capsule to see if it would work, but no luck.

Here's the deal, I am so frustrated. I am trying to open port 59152 for Transmission on my Macbook Pro. I have the latest releases of everything, I am using an Airport Extreme base station with an older airport to boost my signal/connect my tivo w/out a wireless adapter.
I have managed to get it open in the past but there was an update or something a month or two ago and at first it was still open and then it closed. I don't know what changed with the update, all I know is that I did n't change anything.
I have granted permission for Transmission to accept incoming connections on the firewall, little snitch allows it too. I have lighthouse, which worked at first but now I don't even know why I bother having it run. I have the port mapped through the airport utility.
PLEASE don't say to go to portforward.com because they haven't updated the Airport section since Leopard came out, yet every search I do someone repeatedly tells the person needing help to go to [URL]
I am going to attach some screen captures so you can see what I've got going on and maybe point out something I've missed.

I have just ordered a new MacBook Pro and it does not have enough USB ports for my needs. If I have a USB 3.0 hub and I mix USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 peripherals on it, will the whole hub/computer USB 3.0 port be slowed down to USB 2.0 speeds?I am thinking back to Firewire, if you have Firewire 800 and 400 devices on the same chain, the whole chain slowed to Firewire 400 speeds.I don't think this is the same with USB but wanted some reassurance..

For anyone wanting to use their Mini Display port connector on their 4870 with a panel that has the standard size display port connector, I've found a source for a cable that works perfectly. It has the mini display port on one end and a full size display port on the other. Cost $19 bucks shipped and works like a champ. The cable is nice and compact, thinner and more flexible than my DVI cable. I'm quite pleased! ( it's the little things.... )
Here is the cable I picked up: Mini Display Port to Display Port cable

Relevant newbie to the mac world. I have a MBP late 2009. I bought a third party Mini display port to HDMI converter so I can hook the MBP to my 46" Samsung screen.
This works fine, no major issues here. However the picture is not great. I compared watching a standard definition TV show through the MBP then burnt it onto a DVD. The DVD (using the PS3 as my DVD drive, connected via HDMI) had superior quality than through the MBP.
Also the picture does not quite fill the screen. There is a small black border running all the way around the screen. Does not sound significant but when doing the same comparison as above, you notice the difference when via DVD the movie fills the screen. I have played around with the resolution settings. Those that fill the screen chop bits of the mac desktop off, so thats no good either.
So I am wondering why this is? Is it because the mini display port is not a DVI port, hence I am not getting true HD quality picture? How can I overcome this if at all. I'm thinking of getting a mac mini as a media hub/HTPC but want to ensure I dont encounter the same problems.

This is my first post on the forums, although I'm planning on looking around in here once in a while, to see what people are posting.
For starters, I just wanted to tell you about this little problem I've been having with my MacBook 1,83GHz.
Sitting at my desk at work one morning, peacefully drinking my coffee, I suddenly received a rather discomforting error-message from my shiny new (about 1 month old) MacBook;
"A USB devise is currently drawing too much power and the port will be deactivated.".

My employer is giving me a new HP (nope, no macs there ). I am thinking of getting the 12" 2540P Notebook for portability. Question is if I can connect that to my iMac 27" and use the iMac as a monitor?
There is a Displayport on the HP - can a simple cable like this do the job?

so for about 6 months I've been using my iMac's ethernet connection as an Air Port for both my iphone and roommates pc around the house. recently I was using my phone and the wifi all of a sudden was horrible, playing a quicktime video that took 2 seconds to begin before was literally impossible to play, and when switched to edge it was much faster.
I thought that something was acting up with my iphone and shrugged it off but my roommate soon complained the internet was being really slow on her pc. So I checked my Mac and it's internet connection was fine. The Air Port was on, I reset it, switched channels but same performance.

Im totally new to Mac's and have always used Windows based PC's. I work with Cisco kit a lot and often console into them using a serial port on the PC or a USB to Serial adaptor on the laptop. I can then use something like Putty to console to the Cisco kit via the com port assigned to the USB to Seriall adaptor...well Im having trouble getting my USB to Serial adaptor working with my newly purchase MBP (Just had it 2 weeks and still getting to grips with it)
Firstly when I plugged in my USB to Serial adaptor I expected some sort of pop up or activity while the MBP installs it but nothing has come up so maybe this one isnt compatible with the MBP. Secondly Im struggling to find an application that I can use like Putty on the MBP?

If anybody here has a camcorder with a Firewire output, can you check something for me? I'm trying to use the front panel FW port on my new Mac Pro and it doesn't see my camcorder (Canon GL2) when I plug it in to capture footage. It IS seen if I plug the same FW cable into the port on the back of the ACD so that seems to rule out a bad FW cable. Also, the port seems to be working because it will see a FW CF cardreader when I insert it into the port. Any ideas? Is there a difference between the front and rear FW ports on the latest Mac Pro?

Basically, I have a wireless router in my house that my Mac Pro connects to from a seperate room. I have an xbox 360 in my room with the Mac Pro. Without buying the $100 360 wireless adapter, could I configure it so I could run my 360 into my Mac Pro's ethernet port and piggy back off of my Mac's wireless connection to get on Xbox Live?

I have a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver model M8667LL/A, Dual 1.0 Ghz, that I'd like to see about adding an additional USB port to the back of the unit. It only comes with two, one is being used for the keyboard-> mouse, the other I have an external hard drive plugged into. I recently bought a cradle for my Fuji digital camera that comes with a USB cord, I'd like to hardmount the cradle and plug it in but don't want to swap with the hard drive every time I use it or run the cable to the spare keyboard port, that looks like hell. Is this a feasible option to do, and if so, how? Mind you I'm not a computer expert so I'd either need a very basic set of instructions or an technician to do it locally, but first I'd like to know if it's even possible.

I'm considering upgrading to the new Time Capsule because I would get a lot of use out of the guest networking and dual band features (but only because I have someone who will buy my old one from me) but I have one concern.
Does anybody know if there is a way to port my existing Time Machine backups to the new Time Capsule? I would rather not lose that archive of the past year if I don't have to.

I recently got a Macbook and have a iPhone and iPod shuffle. The thing is there isn't enough usb ports on the Macbook so I had to get a hub. The hub I got IS self powered and does not require a external power adapter. My concern is that I am withdrawing too much power from my usb port through this hub. It is a 4 port hub and a External HDD ( has own power supply), Optical mouse is connected to it. also I charge my iPhone and shuffle via the same hub.
I am afraid that there is power limit feature and it will fry my computer. I notice if I boot in boot camp to windows. Windows will display a error message telling me, I am not allowed to have this many device drawing this much power. Anyone know if I should be okay as long as OS X doesn't give me a message or should I really consider getting a USB hub with its own power adaptor?

ok, so i have a bt homehub, and i want to download things on transmission, but recently it has slowed to a crawling pace, despite having many seeders.
So, i heard that to speed it up you can forward ports, and whereas i am a good gamer, i have no practical skills with computers besides a few mainly showy bits of knowledge.

I used the MacRumors Buyer's Guide for several months to find the best time to buy a MacBook. I'd never had a Mac before and found it to be so valuable. I hope someone in the forum can be as helpful as the site has been.
Yesterday I bought a new MacBook Pro 13" and as a store option the RAM was doubled to 4GB. Everything has worked well so far, in both OS X and Windows XP through Boot Camp, except for either OS accessing the LAN cable on my home ADSL. Both my portable modem (EMobile network in Japan) and the wireless seem to work with no issue, and both OS will recognize the ethernet port. I'm concerned that perhaps the ethernet adapter was modified when the store installed the memory.
I can remove the ethernet cable from one computer (where it works without any settings changes on my Windows notebook) and plug the same cable into the MacBook and it will not be recognized. The Mac OS error is that no cable is inserted.
However, as it's my first Mac, I didn't know if perhaps some new settings are required to make things work smoothly. Is there any DNS settings etc. that must be set for it to connect? Also is there some kind of connection diagnostic that will specify the location of the error in the machine? I'd like to exhaust any option before shipping this back to the store to be repaired or replaced.

I've got a network that's kinda haphazard and annoying, where there's a good 5-second gap between typing in an address and it actually starting to load. Would I be able to put my modem's connection directly into my mac pro, and then bring the connection through and to my Airport Extreme?
