IMac :: HP Display Port To IMac Mini Display Port?
Nov 9, 2010
My employer is giving me a new HP (nope, no macs there ). I am thinking of getting the 12" 2540P Notebook for portability. Question is if I can connect that to my iMac 27" and use the iMac as a monitor?
There is a Displayport on the HP - can a simple cable like this do the job?

For anyone wanting to use their Mini Display port connector on their 4870 with a panel that has the standard size display port connector, I've found a source for a cable that works perfectly. It has the mini display port on one end and a full size display port on the other. Cost $19 bucks shipped and works like a champ. The cable is nice and compact, thinner and more flexible than my DVI cable. I'm quite pleased! ( it's the little things.... )
Here is the cable I picked up: Mini Display Port to Display Port cable

I know about the 27 inch and how it can is can use its mini display port as a video input. But I was wondering if you could use the 21.5 inch to do the same. From what I am reading its seems though that it can't, is there a hack of some sort that could do this. This would be a great 1080p screen to use instead of buying a brand new TV.

I am wondering what exactly can be fed in and out of the mini displayport on the new iMac, and just as importantly, what extra gear is needed. I have read that things like PS3s in principle can be fed into the iMac, but they need some adapter thing that is pretty expensive, is that still the case, and is it the case for anything that you feed in, other than other apple devices like MacBooks and such?

Alright so I go the new 21.5 inch and love it but I was wondering if the Mini-Display Port does audio for the HDMI output. Because if it did, that would be wonderful.

I am a current PC user and I am planing my purchase for my i-7 27" iMac but I have a question regarding the Mini Displayport. I frequently repair PC's and use my display as a second input to connect to the PC that I need to repair. I have been reading the spec on the iMac and noticed that the Mini Displayport can be used as an input. Can someone tell me which adapter that I need to purchase to make this happen?

How many of you would like to see a HDMI Port? Why the miniDisplay port? Why not remove ethernet jack and miniDisplay port and replace it with a HDMI port. That way one HDMI cable feeds digital video AND audio. Am I the only one thinking of this?

Relevant newbie to the mac world. I have a MBP late 2009. I bought a third party Mini display port to HDMI converter so I can hook the MBP to my 46" Samsung screen.
This works fine, no major issues here. However the picture is not great. I compared watching a standard definition TV show through the MBP then burnt it onto a DVD. The DVD (using the PS3 as my DVD drive, connected via HDMI) had superior quality than through the MBP.
Also the picture does not quite fill the screen. There is a small black border running all the way around the screen. Does not sound significant but when doing the same comparison as above, you notice the difference when via DVD the movie fills the screen. I have played around with the resolution settings. Those that fill the screen chop bits of the mac desktop off, so thats no good either.
So I am wondering why this is? Is it because the mini display port is not a DVI port, hence I am not getting true HD quality picture? How can I overcome this if at all. I'm thinking of getting a mac mini as a media hub/HTPC but want to ensure I dont encounter the same problems.

I see Dell and HP monitors with Display Port. Is this the same thing as what Apple uses only with the terminology slightly changed?

I'm getting a high resolution, and it looks alright, but it's not fully using the widescreen. That's "aspect" right? Well anyway, I also have a 19" display and it works perfectly. My Xbox, cable box and movies all use the full widescreen on the Acer, but the Macbook with the super amazing Mini DisplayPort doesn't even use the full resolution. What's with that? I thought the reason they had this new port and a $30 adapter was for higher resolutions!

I want to buy the 27" iMac - but only if I can use it as external monitor for my Lenovo laptop when working from home. A the Apple store in London they said that this is possible with a Belkin converter from hdmi to mini display port (with a USB power caple to turn it into an active signal). The laptop also has a displayport.

I have a mid-late 2008 MacBook connected to a Dell U2211H monitor using a Mini DisplayPort -> VGA connection.
When I use 1920x1080, I only get 60 Hz and the display is a fuzzy (text). Also, there are black bars. Why?
Will my issues be solved using a Mini DisplayPort -> DVI connection? Or should I exchange it for the 2209?

i have a 15 inch apple studio display which has ADC (was partnered with the cube) and I purchased a DVI adaptor so it now works fine with the DVI port on the macbook pro. I am considering a new mac notebook (not sure which yet) but as these have the new mini display port, is there an adaptor that would slot into the DVI end of my current one, so it would work with the new macbook?

I use MBP (late 2011). I find the hunderbolt port to be similar to the mini-display port of older mac. I wish to have another display, but not ready to spend $999 over a thunderbolt display from mac. So would like to know if a Mini-diaplay port converter from apple would help me connect a exernal display via the thunderbolt port?

Reading the tech specs on the site, seems to imply that the screen on the 27" will accept a displayport in? If so, does this mean that I can finally use the iMac's screen for my HDMI gaming console?

Just wondering if the "Mini DisplayPort to" is the one and only "Mini DisplayPort to" in all of Apple's offerings or if the MP has one, MBP has one, iMac has one etc and anyone needing an adapter has to pick the right one that connects to their Mac or it will not work

I decided I'd try my old crt monitor on the new 5870 (figured it'd be nice to hold toolbars in). I hooked it up via the mini display port->vga adaptor (apple branded) I use for my mbp, the issue is that I cannot get it to work on osx, and I got it it work once on windows... it works just peachy on my mbp though.
Is there any known issue with vga output on the mdp? It isn't mission critical to get it to work so I can leave it at that but could this be a sign there is something wrong with my mdps? (I use the dvi link for my main lcd)...

I saw this at wikipedia: Auxiliary channel can be used for touch-panel data, USB links, camera, microphone, etc. [URL] So is it possible to have an extra USB via the mini display port? only one USB port is absolutely inadequate.

Ok, yes I've searched but I'm a little unclear. I have a Macbook Pro the most current version (matte screen!). I need to be able to get RCA/composite video out for presentations but would like to also have DVI capability. Can I go mini-display port to DVI using this adaptor and then go DVI to RCA using this adaptor [URL[? My question is because I know there are different kinds of DVI and my understanding is that the current MBP uses DVI-D which I wasn't sure would work in this kind of setup. This was so much easier when Apple just made the correct adaptor... Anybody ordered from monoprice.com? I've seen it mentioned in a few posts and their prices are much lower than Apple's...

i just bought a mini display port to hdmi adapter, an HDMI to HDMI cable, and an audio cable for my 2008 unibody macbook (Snow Leopard). I've been trying to use my 26" 720p Sanyo [URL] as a monitor to display my computer so I can watch things that I have on my computer. When I plug it into HDMI one like I'm suppose to, it doesn't work- but you see static and it flickers sometimes. Was I only suppose to get mini display port to DVI then DVI to HDMI?
Notes: If i plug it into the second HDMI adaptor( doesn't say DVI) and set it to 720p then i get a fuzzy picture that is displayed correctly (You can see the entire status bar)
