OS X :: Bad Loginhook Script Hangs The Machine After Login
Feb 28, 2009
I was exploring with synergy and found about this LoginHook. I made a script as advised here: [URL](Second method for OSX). At first script provided in tutorial didn't work out, as synergy started without -f (no-daemon) seemingly does nothing, and does not even give an error message.. So without giving it a proper thought I added the -f flag. Now as I do login on any user, screen hangs as it runs the script (and I can move the mouse around over synergy client, so at least that works... ) So how can I get my hands on that script without normal login? Safe Boot mode didn't help, and I wasn't able to connect via SSH. Is there any way besides reinstalling the whole system?
I have a much loved ibook G4 14" (late 2004??). It has just died. Well, in so much as it won't boot up. The ibook either gets as far as the apple grey screen and hangs, gets to the login screen and hangs, actually loads up finder etc and hangs or none of the above. Sometimes flashing red, blue green black.
After lots of research online over the past few days I tried the following: I have tried safe mode (not working), starting the command prompt screen (single user and verbose modes), started open firmware, and tried booting from a CD. Nothing works as the boot gets so far then hangs. I have flashed the PRam, resetted the NVRam, and have stopped short of opening up the case to dismantle it!
I just really want to access the hard drive now. I have tried Target disk mode and linked the ibook (pressing T) via firewire to a PowerPC G5, but the G5 doesn't recognise the ibook. System profiler on the G5 shows the target mode connected and working fine via firewire, just the icon for the ibook/target doesnt mount on the G5 desktop so I cant access it.Currently the boot freezes within a couple of minutes.I tried the hardware test CD that came with the ibook years ago, I have also tried booting from an OSX Panther CD. I'm assuming they would be bootable.
I forgot to mention that in linking with the G5 in target mode, a disk that I put in the ibook drive appeared on the G5 desktop as an external drive, therefore I wonder why i cannot see the actual ibook drive mounted. The CD drive works as it mounted on the G5.Does the ibook have an actual PRam battery that can be replaced? Maybe this is an issue?Am I able to actually remove the hard-drive and access it as an external drive somehow?
I have a 14' macbook with os x 10.5 on it. Lately my master account hangs when you log in. Sometimes at the background screen, sometimes the finder loads but won't let you do anything, and it can hang anywhere in between.
I've just turned File Vault on on my MacBook Pro 13". I've followed all the steps: noting the FileVault Key, storing it into Apple and restarting my Mac. When my Mac has started, it has asked me for my login, and everything goes OK until the moment my desktop appears. At that moment in time, my Mac hangs, and I get the "colourful beach ball" and nothing seems to happen. I do have a backup on my Time Machine and I can format the disk and start over, but I don't understand why my Mac is freezing just because I've turned FileVault on.
After what seemed to be an improper shutdown my Macbook will not boot. I have tried using fsck to no avail. Booting to the leopard dvd causes it to restart. Flashing PRAM doesnt seem to help and it will not boot into safe mode.
My computer hangs on startup. It's a PowerBook 12 G4 with 10.3.9.
First, the screen flashes black, then blue, then I get the normal startup progress bar. At the end, though, it hangs. If the ethernet cord is in, it hangs at "Waiting for network services" or something like that. If the ethernet cord is out, it hangs at "Login window starting".
The bigger problem is that my system install CDs are in the U.S., and I'm in China for the next six weeks.

I've got this peculiar problem with my MacBook Pro Intel Core i5 running 10.6.8 with all the updates. Whenever I open the computer after logging out, the login window hangs. The insert bar in the username field doesn't blink and I get the spinning beach ball. Sometimes there's no cursor at all. If I close the lid without logging out there's never a problem. But of course that's not an aceptable solution.
I can not reproduce the problem with a fresh account, so I assume there's something wrong with my account. I've had this problem ever since I setup my original account. I've gone through the system.log and I do see some errors during the time the computer goes to sleep after I logout, but I don't know if they are serious or normal warnings.
Within the last couple of weeks, my system has started to hang like clockwork every 30 min. No idea what caused it and don't remember anything in particular installed or done during that period. Unfortunately, when it hangs - there is nothing kicked out in Console and there is no recurring "this process was running right before it happened" clue.Â
Details on system:
Macbook Aluminum (late 2008) Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 2 MB ram 30% harddrive space free (approx. 90 GB)Â
What I've tried:
-repaired permissions -repaired drive -cleaned up drive via Cocktail, CCleaner, CleanMyMac and Disk Doctor -reset PRAM
I booted the machine like it said, and heard some beeps - didn't think much of it, but then it just went to the grey screen with Apple logo and the loader, and hangs there.ow what I can do to solve this, is there a key combination that can reset something or an restore EFI file
I am trying to repair my disk so I can install bootcamp, but when I reboot my machine and run disk utility and choose repair disk, it hangs. Does anyone have any ideas ?
i've been trying to find a solution to be able to write to NTFS drives. i've read that using exFAT is a good way to go. the other thing i wanted to try was to login to a Windows machine that's connected to the NTFS drive and write to it that way
Hi! Im new to the forums but i really need help with something and i was hoping someone here could help me out. So I just installed Tech Tool Deluxe onto my macbook and then shut it down later. I went back to use it again and when i turned it on a login screen appeared asking me to put in my password. I did that and the screen turned blue (looking like it was loading) and then went back to the login screen. Every time i put in my password it just takes me back to the login screen. I have had my mac for a while and i dont want my hardrive to get wiped out so what do i do? Thank you for looking
I work for a company that has several Macs available for customers' use. These are basically demo-machines that they can play with, and at the end of each day, the machines are wiped and rebooted.
The way we do this is simple: the machines auto-login to the Guest account, which will wipe the account at the end of the day. Well, getting a few new Macs in this week, I simply copied over the entire Guest user account to the new machines to avoid reloading all the demo content, preferences, etc. And truthfully, the machines have been working great.
Except one thing. The computer keeps giving me that annoying message that says "Safari (or Finder, or System Preferences, or anything!) wants to use keychain 'login'". And asks for the login keychain password. Well here's the thing: the Guest accounts don't have passwords!
So I looked up a little bit on this topic, and did things like... Went to "Keychain List" in the Edit menu of Keychain Access, and deleted both the "login" and "system" keychains. No help. I went to Preferences in Keychain Access and said "Reset My Keychain". When doing this, however, it asks for the new password for the login keychain.
The problem with this is that I cannot leave the field blank! The Guest account doesn't have a password, so how am I supposed to not create a password?
I have auto login on my profile and disable auto on the security page but still need to login every time I log out or shut down.I have also noticed that the general page of the security and privacy in Syste Prefs is different on my wife Macbook air and my pro....
G4 MDD networked with Mini for approx. 3 years now via a LinkSys BEFSR41 wired router. Ethernet cables are CAT6's with gold-plated ends. Did an erase/install (+ updates) of Panther on G4. ISP is Comcast Cable. Just upgraded my Motorola modem from Surfboard 5100 to SB 5101 yesterday. My network settings are ok...file sharing is turned on...I can ping each 'puter from the other (showing my connection is good).
I have internet access (showing that the router is still good according to Cisco). Now, however, I can't even bring up the window on the G4 asking for my pw....all I get is connection failed, no response from the server. From the Mini, I get Unknown User, incorrect password or login is disabled. I haven't a clue what the problem can be. Everything I do daily depends upon the network connection.
i ve recently activated the default guest account in leopard. However even though when I check in the accounts.prefpane it says that it is on and its 'login only' and when I click on the account it says 'allow guests to login into this computer' and its on.
However when I boot up my machine and click on the guest icon, it wont let me in as it shakes the menu(login failed).
When I turn on lap top (iBook G4 Mac OS x 10.3) i get the following message "Login Window Starting" I followed Apple support guidance - specifically safe start and performing the fsck then reboot process and neither works for me. I don't have the disks any more so I cant use them for reloading the software. I want to sell the laptop so i just want to format the HD. Is it possible to format from command lines?
I have an iMac G5 1.8Ghz and Today when I logged in, it just froze on the apple OS X background. I waited 2 minutes, and nothing happened. It was weird because it's the first time it happened. Anyway, I turned the iMac off and re-tried. It did the exact same thing. So I turned it off, unplugged everything, waited around a minute, plugged it all back in, and it worked fine.
But yeah, just trying to work out why it would do that... because this is going to my brother and I don't want it to just crash when I give it to him.
On a Mac Book Air and a Mac Book Pro we have had a sudden problem. The Air came with Lion installed, the Pro just got upgraded to Lion. We got a new login banner that must be displayed. It is about 10 lines long. We put it in, and on reboot it covers the login boxes for user name and password. We can't find any way to dismiss the banner and login. What can we do.Â
OS X Maverick (10.9.3)..I have an iMac I need to have the user at the login window, log into AD. The iMac does not have an operable ethernet port. I suspect the iMac is old enough, the thunderbolt port is video only, since a known working thunderbolt to ethernet adapter did not connect (I think the iMac is Mid 2011 and I suspect the iMac is out of warranty). Wireless works fine, and I have made the iMac a member of the domain using the private network, after logging in locally. I cannot create the user's mobile account, because I need to have the iMac use wireless at login, connecting to the private network, at login. Â
Is there a way to have the login process use wireless to initiate the login for the mobile account and creation of said account?I know there is a way to do this under Windows, just hope there is a way under OS X.Â
I am using Stata, a statistical analysis program. Recently, when I try to open a file, using File Open, the program hangs and I have to force it to quit. I can open files easily if I use Recent files. When the file gets open, I can do everything I should be able to do with the program. Analysis, graphics, etc. It is JUST when I do File Open that it hangs, and it seems to be ONLY with Stata.Â
I am experiencing problems with the installation process for the Mac OS X 10.5.6 update. Although Software Update presents the appropriate update file, I am experiencing hangs resulting in the update never completing.
Not sure whats changed, but now when I plug in my external drives. Spotlight (mds) spins for a good while then eventually hangs. I can't figure out what the problem is.
I have a 2009 8-core running Lion. It has now starting hanging (desktop visible but no response to any input device). I have run Disk Utility and Apple Hardware Test from install DVD (full test) and it finds no issues. Any thoughts as to how to investigate further. Sounds like a memory leak in an app somewhere, but none are left runnIng.Machine is ok when being used but then is hung when left for a few hours. If I take to Genius Bar I assume they will run AHT and say no faults can be found.
I have a MacBook Pro 2.16 C2D that I just updated with Leopard. I noticed that occasionally the computer will hang when I attempt a shutdown. I didn't have this problem with Tiger so I assume it's a bug in Leopard. When I try a normal shutdown all I see is my desktop wallpaper and that little circular animated icon. I have to hold in the power button to force a shutdown.
Early in the upgrade progress bar, where it says: "Configuring Installation", with less than 3 or 4mm of progress on the progress bar (18" screen, 1280x1024), it just hangs. It sits there and does nothing more. Both on my PowerMac G5 and my brand new Mac mini. If I wait for forever, and then power down, and restart, it starts right back up in to 10.5.5, and software update will tell me it wants to install 10.5.6.
