OS X :: Backup Operation Cannot Be Completed (Error -36)
Jun 25, 2009
I've been getting the "error -36" "operation could not be completed because file "" could not be read or written when trying to backup one external firewire drive to another drive (either another external firewire, or my internal startup drive). After the error, the copy operation will hang and be impossible to cancel, forcing a find relaunch about 50% of the time.
-Disk Utility finds no problems with the disk
-The filenames do not contain illegal characters
-If I try enough times the problem file(s) will eventually copy, but then another file will become the problem, suggesting that the file itself is NOT actually corrupted. After successful copy, the file (an MP3) plays just fine. Subsequently, I will have trouble copying that same file again.
There are no strange noises from the HD and I can feel the vibrations from it spinning as normal. My guess is that the HD is on its last legs and is acting flaky but that the data is still OK. What can I do to rescue the data before the damn thing dies completely? Now before anyone jumps on me to UTFSE, I have searched extensively, but havent found anything that addresses my specific situation (especially the part about the files being randomly OK and not OK.
I'm trying to empty the trash on my iMac (running Snow Leopard) but I just get an error message: The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code - 8003).
I am getting this error "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." when I try to transfer files from my Mac Mini to my External Harddrive which is connected to my Airport Extreme. " The error does not appear to happen all the time. It does seem consistent if I am transfering files and then try to transfer more.
The files I am transferring are .mp4. It does not appear to care about the size of the file, it happens with small files and large files, I can transfer some large folders (2.54G). I can connect the hard-drive externally directly to the mac mini and it will transfer any file.
When I try to empty my Trash with a certain app in it I get error code -8003. I can't find reference to that code anywhere and do not know how to clean up the trash. "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)."
Info: iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.7), iMac-24, iMac-27, G5, G4, G3, iBook, etc.
I got this message: "The operation cant be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -1407)." each time I try to put a folder inside my external hard drive into the trash, I don't have this bug for a simple file

I wanted to delete a file in my dekstop, but i can't delete it.. It pops out a message like this "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8072)."I have used "rm -rf" this kind of sudo, but it doesn't help. I can't even rename it also.
I get the following message frequently: "The operation couldn't be completed.Operation not permitted.(NSPOSIXErrorDomain:1)".I need to restart the computer inorder to access the internet.I connect via wireless and other wireless items on the network don't have this issue.
I have one file deleted but when I try to empty, it says:
"The operation can't be completed because the item is in use."I have set all permissions of that file to Read & Write but still can't empty.I also tried to rename file, move to another folder etc, but without success.

When trying to restore the library/mail folder via Time Machine i'm told: "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for "mail'" I seems to me that i have both privileges to read and write in the folder. I can't place the backed up files in a different folder either?
I have no problems restoring my pictures and the likes from time machine?
When I try to copy large files over to my Network Attached Storage device, such as Movies or TV Shows, It comes up with the following message, (see picture below) even though I have no other Applications open in my Dock. Is there something I'm missing? It's an intermittent fault too which suggests something wrong is going on, which probably isn't my fault.
I have installed Disc 1 onto my Toshiba Laptop to enable Remote Disc sharing and I have followed the exact instructions as per Apple Support website and I am connected on the same network on both machines. When I open Finder on my Macbook Air it does show my Toshiba drive and when I click to try open the disc, it thinks for a while then comes up with error "The operation cannot be completed because the original item for "[disc name]" cannot be found."
I am trying to copy a 650MB .mov file (shot on a Canon 5D) from a lacie rugged external harddrive to my G-Raid but it stops at 22.5mbs and then I get the error code "can't complete the operation because some data in "8T2C1814" move can't be read or written. (Error code -36). " I then click on OK and I get the following window: "The operation can't be completed because one or more required items can't be found. (Error code -43)"I am very worried as these are the only original copies on the external harddrive and I'm nervous about performing even a repair command on the from Disk Utility.
I have MacBook Pro, i have leopard running on it, when i try to install Snow Leopard on it, it gives an error!!!Operation could not be completed. (OSProductManagerDomain error 100.)This error pops-up when i double click on "Install Mac OS X".
I tried running Disk utility and repair permissions. Restarted my MacBook, pressed "C", no luck...
I am not able proceed further... Please any help would be great...
I couldn't find any resolve from anyone on this topic in older forums, but I have the folder generated and backed up on my iMac and my backup drive, a DROBO. I managed to get rid of the lost+found items on the iMac, but the DROBO says "The operation cant be completed because the item dir_1558208 is in use." as well as the rest of the contents.
Lion 10.7.4: "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access" when compressing folder On Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4: I am trying to compress a large folder to move to an external RAID. When I try to compress on the same drive location I get "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access...". It seems certain files in the directory permissions are not set properly. I have tried changing the folder and all contain files permission through "Get Info" and it appears to complete without errors.
This is probaly going to seen like a very stupid question so please bear in mind this is my first mac.
I cannot empty the trash because it tells me "The operation cannot be completed because the item "USBOverdriveHelper" is in use" Stop or Continue USB Overdrive is the program I am trying to uninstall.
I have a question that was sort of touched on in mac forums but never solved for someone else back in 2007. I have been scouring the net to find a remedy to my problem. I have mac os 10.4.11. I have a zipped file (final cut pro) that i am trying to open and when I try to open it i get a "unable to unarchive (error 1 - operation not permitted)" message. I followed the guidelines from the old thread for the other personIi repaired permissions but when I tried to download onyx it told me the the onyx version needs a higher OS (10.5 I beleive) than I have and other efforts to find the onyx for my mac have failed. I have also downloaded x slimmer and Xserve raid driver for people that use final cut pro.
I have a problem when I'm transferring files from my powerbook g4 to external hard disks such as lacie or ipod. It keeps popping up "The finder cannot Complete operation because some data in File AVI could Not be Read or Written. (Error Code -36).
So a few weeks ago, I copied my entire music library (97.5gb) onto my external hard drive (Mac OS X Extended, Journaled) to save space on my boot drive. Since then, I've been able to update my iPod, receiving the message "Attempting to copy to the disk <iPod name> failed. The disk could not be read from or written to".
I formatted my iPod to see if that was the problem, but it still won't copy. So, in order to right that situation, I tried to copy all my music back to my regular HD, but now am receiving the Finder Error code -36 "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some of the data in (name of file) could not be read or written." I can't format the external drive either because then I would lose all of my music.
I have a 2011 Mac Mini. I try to connect to another Mac via Remote Disk. The other computer shows up and the disk appears in the window. However, when I select the disk, I get a message telling me that the operation failed because the original could not be found. Apple Troubleshooting tells me that it has something to do with the firewall. So I turned off the firewall, but I still get the same message. Both computers are running 10.7.3.
I cannot delete items from my desktop. The message says "This item can't be completed because backup items can't be modified" This is a new problem, and it is happening wtih pdf, jpg, Word docs. Just about anything.
