OS X :: 10.5.4 Fast User Switching Options

Jul 1, 2008

Ever since "upgrading" to 10.5.4 yesterday, fast user switching has been having problems. Randomly, when I change to another account (all are password protected), it will just instantly log me out, without even trying to close apps etc. - it literally takes it a second to log out, then I have to go back in and log in from scratch.

OS X :: Desktop Changes Whenever I Go Out Of Fast-User Switching?

Nov 23, 2010

I'm using a 2.33 GHz MacBook Pro running the latest version of SL. I periodically like to step away from my desk, so I'll click on my name in my Mac's menu bar to initialize 'fast user-switching', so that no one could use my computer without entering a password (similar to "lock" in Windows XP+). When I log back in however, I find that the desktop background that I had set was automatically changed to the default SL background. Could any of ya'll provide an explanation as to why this happens?

OS X :: How Does Fast User Switching Work

Feb 1, 2010

I have a quick question on how "Fast User Switching" is implemented in OS X. I have added an account in OS X yesterday for my wife, and I have enabled fast user switching. Now, what I wonder:- Do my downloads continue when my wife switches to her account? Example: Transmission (bittorrent), will it continue with uploading/downloading when my wife switched to her account?
- Do my applications continue to run when my wife switches to her account? Example: Handbrake (converting a movie). Will it continue with converting while my wife switched to her account?

Software :: Fast User Switching Has No Effect?

Jan 28, 2009

I used FUS years ago, but I can't get it to work now. I clicked Login Options in the Accounts preferences pane, and checked Use Fast User Switching. But when I log off any user, it closes all the applications and actually logs out. And when I switch back to any user, it loads all the apps from scratch and starts them up again. And when I log out as user X and log in as user Y, if I execute who, I see indeed that user X is not logged in

I was switching between accounts. When I switched to my admin account, the computer went to the original welcome to your new mac set up video with all the welcome words in different languages, then started with the new mac set up stuff, ie, what's your name, etc. I tried apple Q but that didn't work, so I restarted the computer with control, apple, start. Now my computer just shows the white screen with apple and the round spinning circle.

OS X Yosemite :: Fast User Switching Cause System Hang

Nov 30, 2014

After upgrading to Yosemite, I had very serious problems with fast user switching. I do software development using my BackBook Pro, I need to switch between different accounts for testing/debugging purposes.

As long as I use fast switching, I will eventually have a system hang when logging out, login or shutting down. I either got blank screens, or dead login screen. In the end, I had to press the power button for 3 seconds to do a brute cold power off.

OS X :: Fast GPU Switching In SL?

Aug 14, 2009

When the MBPs came out with the dual graphics cards, people believed that they would be able to fast-switch between then. However, this is not the case; a logout-login is required to switch between the 9400M and 9600M GT on the MBPs. It was thought with the release of Snow Leopard this would be fixed.

So, has it been? will it be? Any word on using both graphics cards at the same time to boost performance?

IMac :: Making Loud Whir When Fast Switching Enabled

May 16, 2009

I was watching WWDC 2003(panther intro) this morning, and I only just learned about Fast Account Switching from it. So, right after watching, I went to system preferences and enabled fast switching. However, right after I did this, my iMac made an unusually loud whir, which I assumed was the hard drive loading some files, although I have never heard it do this before. After about a minute of hearing this, I assumed that something was wrong, and I quit all applications other than system preferences, and when it didn't stop, I disabled Fast Switch. The iMac quickly quieted down. After thinking about it, I realized that I only had 1GB of RAM in the machine, which may cause the system to use virtual memory. Would having 2GB or even 4GB make this not happen, or would I need more than that? I never have noticed the iMac lagging in other areas, but would RAM help in general tasks too?

OS X :: Switching Between Options With Keyboard Arrows?

Aug 18, 2010

I was wondering if there is a way to choose options using keyboard arrows. For example, when Finder asks me whether I want to open a downloaded file from the internet, and I want to say "No", I want to be able to press left and press enter and that'll be it. Instead, I have to use my mouse to click on No.

Is there a way to do this? I went to System Prefs, Keyboards, and clicked on All Controls, but that wasn't the solution.

Applications :: Transfer Personal Data From Home User To New User On Same MacBook?

Sep 3, 2009

I have tried very hard to find the answer to my transferring question, but nowhere do I find my answer nor does Apple offer free help or even help by email.

So here is my issue. I want to transfer all my personal data from my HOME user account on my MacBook to a NEW user account on the SAME MacBook. The reason is that my Microsoft Office has a certain issue that is only solvable by starting up in a new user. So now I want to transfer all the personality, data, files, and all that from my home user to the new user on the same computer. After that, I want to delete the old Home user and make the new user the default home user account.

OS X Mavericks :: Delete Second User That Migration Assistant Has Made Into Primary User?

Jun 28, 2014

Just got a new MacBook Pro, wanted to transfer my data from the old (2010) MBP. I've done this dozens of times before, but always manually, via Finder copies from external hard disks, etc. This time I decided to try the Official Method, using Migration Assistant. After numerous tries, I couldn't get Migration Assistant to work between the two MacBook Pros (both running 10.9.3), even with Apple's assistance. So I decided to try it with a MacBook running 10.6.8. It worked (though poorly; Migration Assistance needs some serious repair), which was useful (now I know that Migration Assistant works, and it's not a problem with the cabling I was using, but something in the old MBP).  But now I have two user accounts on my new MacBook Pro, which I don't want, plus the added account has now been made the primary account, with (some) data from the previously primary account moved to it.

So I want to delete the new, added, now primary user and return the MBP to its former, pristine state. So I have to go through all the data (fortunately there isn't much; both the new MBP and the MacBook were only recently set up) that's been moved from the original account to the added account, move it back to the original account, then delete the added account (if I can). This was somewhat complicated by the fact that the ~/Library folder is now invisible by default, but I figured that out. However, what I'm wondering now is, when the second, added account was made the primary account, did it assume all attributes of the former primary account, including its number? I know that user accounts in Mac OS have numbers, like 501, 502, etc.

How can I see the numbers of these two accounts? And if the added account is now number 501, when I delete it, how I can I restore the number 501 to the original account? Or perhaps I should just return the new MBP to its factory state, and start over? But I can't, since it didn't come with any Install DVDs (nor indeed, with an optical drive). (I've been out of touch with the Mac world for several years due to illness, am only now learning about the changes since 10.6, which I'd been using until less than a week ago.) I can wipe the MacBook Pro and reinstall 10.9.3, but that might lose some information specific to this computer that came with it.

Intel Mac :: Cannot Change Admin User To Standard User (2 Admin Accounts)

Mar 6, 2012

When I purchased my iMac a few years ago, I created one user account and just started using my computer.  I am trying to implement a few Safe Computing practices by creating a new Admin user account and changing my original user account to a Standard user.

For some reason, I cannot change either of the accounts to a standard user after I type in the password.  I've logged in as both and tried to change the other user profile to a standard user, but the checkbox is greyed out on both of the Admin User accounts.

I can create a new standard user, but I have everyting set the way I like it on my current Admin user account.  It would be much easier to have a new Admin User account and "Downgrade" my original Admin account to a standard user account.

why the option to change from an Admin user to a standard user would be "Greyed Out"?  The support articles walk me through, what should be a few simple steps, but I can not change the settings because the checkbox is greyed out.
