MacBook :: Making Work With Good Performance?

Aug 22, 2009

I have an Early 2009 Whitebook. Until here recently my Whitebook has ran like a champ, but now it seems like the computer is easily bogged down. Here's what I've got so far:

1) Repaired permissions.
2) Cleared temp. files.
3) Cleared off desktop.
4) Removed un-needed startup programs.
5) Closed programs in the dock when not in use.

I have 4GB's of RAM so I know RAM isn't the issue. It just seems like ever since 10.5.7 came out a little while back the computer seems to get easily overwhelmed. It's not uncommon for me to get the beach ball just from opening "system preferences." Do you all have any ideas as to what could be the problem?

MacBook Pro :: Performance Update Making Run Warmer?

Oct 17, 2009

Has anyone else noticed their MBP running slightly hotter since the recent performance upgrade?

My MBP's CPU was previously idling at about 37C, and is suddenly idling at anything between 44-50C, seemingly for no reason (no extra processes running that I'm aware of, and no changes in general usage), and hasn't dropped below 42C in days. I realise this isn't hot, by a long shot, but it's a pretty noticeable increase from my previous idling temperatures, so I'm naturally a bit curious.

I've cleaned out the vent with compressed air (though the MBP is very new, so I wasn't expecting much effect), and that predictably did nothing to bring the temperature back down to its former average... so I'm wondering now if there's something in the performance upgrade that makes the CPU run a little hotter than it would've done before?

Windows On Mac :: XP On IMac - Making Fast Performance

Apr 19, 2010

iMac, late 2006 Generation

XP info:

System:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service pack 3

Computer:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU
T7400 @ 2.16GHz
2.16GHz, 2.98 GB of RAM
Physical Address Extension

Leopard info:
Version 10.5.8, same hardware.

I've installed XP via Boot Camp. The internal drive in the mac is 230gb (total), and I allocated 60gb to XP. I formatted the partition to NTFS (not quick), and completed the rest of the setup. I then inserted the Leopard DVD and installed the boot camp drivers. Then I downloaded all available updates for XP, and the only other thing I've installed is Mozilla Firefox. I've also made changes to the system using an optimization guide (link below), and the performance seems to be the same before and after.

[URL] - I've only done as far as number 20.

The performance is very sluggish. It shows most while scrolling. It's not smooth and jitters a lot. On previous installations of XP on this computer, I've run audio software (Pro Tools/Cubase) and the performance is terrible. It can't handle even the simplest of tasks.

On the Mac OSX side of the machine, however, performance is fine. Everything runs smoothly.

As far as I know, the specs of the computer are pretty good. I can't understand why performance wouldn't be up to scratch

So, I'm just wondering if anybody has any ideas on what's going on? Is this normal, or am I missing something? It seems like Windows isn't using the full power of the hardware.

MacBook Pro :: Good Enough For Photoshop Work?

Mar 26, 2010

I'm a dutch photographer (don't mind my english) considering switching from pc to mac. What is holding me is I think its quite an investment buying a MBP and a Mac Pro at the same time. I was wondering.........because I also need a notebook......would an MBP also do the job doing all the processing of Photoshop? (It still needs to go very smooth like on a desktop so no hicks during any actions.) If so...then I could first buy a MBP and later on a Mac Pro. I definately need the notebook on location.

MacBook Pro :: Making Making Cracking Sounds While Opening

Sep 27, 2009

Since about the 3rd day after I got my macbook pro the computer has been making cracking sounds when I open it. When it first started it just simply made one clicking sound when the hinge is halfway open. Now however, When it is open it makes cracking sounds that don't stop ( open 15 cracking sounds per open). Is this a serious issue that I need to address with my local (and very mean) genius or is this issue not going to continue to get progressively worse. If this does continue to get worse will the hinge crack open? what is this worst that could happen?

Mac Pro :: Won't Work With Expose Performance Dual Monitors On ATI 4870

I recently purchased a second 22" Dell 2209WA to go with my Mac Pro. They are both running from the ATI Radeon 4870 on my Mac Pro (2009 Quad) but the Expose performance seems to be really quite poor. Displaying all the windows is very juddery and not smooth at all. Is that what I should be expecting now? I wouldn't have on a 2000 Machine. Going into Spaces is fine, it's just Expose thats poor.

Software :: Making ITunes Work With Speakable Items

Jul 20, 2003

I recently discovered the speech control option in OS X. I downloaded an applescript from Apple's site that's supposed to play a random song when the script is run. I put it in my speakable items folder, and it's recognized, but it won't actually run. Does anyone know how I can get iTunes to play a random song when I tell it to? Also, to switch and stop songs? I'd love to be able to sit in bed and say "play music", "next song", "rewind song", etc., but so far, all I can control by voice is opening and hiding iTunes and the scripts from apple's site just plain won't run.

OS X :: Making Time Machine Work On A Smaller External Drive?

Nov 22, 2009

I'm just about to receive my new Core i7 iMac with a 2Tb Hard Drive and was just wondering whether I could use my old 1Tb Hard Drive for Time Machine Backups.

As far as I know the requirement for a Time Machine Backup Drive is that the drive is at least the same size in terms of capacity as the internal HD of the system you're planning to back up.

I would really like to use my old drive as 2Tb external drives with FireWire 800 are in the 200+ region on Amazon and I'm not sure I would like to spend that much at the moment.

MacBook Pro :: Is SSD Cloning Good

Dec 5, 2010

I am upgrading my MBP first gen unibody to an SSD drive. I just read that we should not clone an existing HDD to a SSD. The author did not give a reason why. So, my question is: will cloning my current HDD to a new SSD (using Super Duper) adversely affect the SSD performance? My initial plan for upgrading before reading this article was to clone my HDD to a new SSD in an enclosure (using Super Duper), then install the SSD. I thought this would save me a lot of effort restoring everything from scratch.

MacBook Air :: Rev B Will Get As Good A Screen As Rev A?

I am starting to wonder if Apple will ever 'fix' or upgrade the screen(s) in Rev B to the same level as rev A or if this screen is something we have to accept when we buy a MBA?

Cant make up my mind whether to buy the Rev B or not due to the screen. a last gen MBP glossy has a better screen as far as I have seen.

MacBook Pro :: What Would Be A Good Monitor To Pair

Oct 9, 2010

I want to pair my MBP (high res antiglare) with a 24" monitor. The colour levels on the MBP are really good and I'm a little worried about buying a monitor and setting them up side by side and not having the two match in terms of quality.

Can anyone recommend a good monitor that is of equal quality to the MBP antiglare screens? I've read good things about the Dell ST2410 which is within my budget.... if really pushed I could go for the U2410 but would really rather not spend that much. Are there any other monitors that are cheaper than the U2410 that have 'mac mode'?

MacBook Air :: Air's Battery Life Is Good?

Oct 21, 2010

Im a little confused, is the Air Battery life that good? I've taken the following claims from the Apple website. MacBook Air - Get up to 5 hours of battery life on a single charge on the 11-inch model and up to 7 hours on the 13-inch model. 13" MacBook Pro - The new energy-efficient architecture in the 13-inch MacBook Pro gives you up to 10 hours of battery life on a single charge. I understand that Steve Jobs advised that they were using a better way to measure battery life for the Air that reflect real world usage better (WiFi Browsing I think?) so how does this compare to the MBP range? I guess the MBP battery claims were made using another older method, so any thoughts on how the Air's battery life compares to other PC's and Mac's?
