I recently reinstalled Lion on my Air to clean up a few issues, but it seems to have created new ones. This is what I see at the top of Activity Monitor pretty much constantly now.

Safari locking up originally. I would get beach balls pretty often, and simple tasks like opening a new tab would take a long time. One day last week I noticed it took like 30 minutes to index in spotlight..just random weird things like that.Yesterday, I got home and the computer had the little loading icon on the middle of my desktop and was completely locked up. The computer wasnt doing anything other than running normal processes.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI just woke up my MacBook Pro, and the HD sounded like there was something going on. It wasn't the indexing, so I opened up Activity Monitor and found something taking 10-30% CPU called "find". It was under several instances of "sh", and I think it's first parent was "locate.code" or something like that. Anyway, after a while I opened Activity Monitor again, and the "find" process was replaced by something called "makewhatis". It disappeared almost a second after I opened Activity Monitor. Obviously it's just part of the system, but what exactly do these processes do?

I am soon to be getting a MacBook Pro in about a month. Since I have always used PC's, although I am very excited, I am trying to gather all information possible to make the switch easy and be productive on the the new MacBook. I have a simple question, I know on windows when you have many things running at one time it tends to bog and slow down. Running things in the background are the issues I am getting at. Does running application and widgets in the background of a MacBook cause them to slow noticeably?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was watching YouTube on my Mac book Air. I paused it and closed the laptop. When I opened it and tried to turn it on, it shows a blank screen. But when I press esc, I can barely see a very very very faint login page with the box asking for my password. When I type my password, it logs in and I can play the YouTube and hear everything and all. But my screen is just black. My keyboard lights doesn't light up either. I've tried everything.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if it is possible to record with either photobooth or iMovie running in the background without getting the clip cut.
when you minimize photobooth the isight stops recording untill you open the app again.
Is there ANY way i can keep recording without having the app opened up all the time?
Or is there some kind of windows hider or something to get around this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Blackbook, it's about 3 years old now and the fan speed has increased to a very high level. There aren't any programs running in the background, this just simply happens when I leave the computer on. I'm assuming it's because there is dust buildup on the internal parts, but it's odd that it progressed from being fine to the stat that it is in today in the matter of days. Is there a way to clean the inside? Apple technician to have a look at it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed VM Fusion 3.0, it is really much faster running Windows Vista with it.
Anyway, my main issue is, when I opened Activity Monitor, I realized that VMF 3.0 runs in the background when the computer start, is there anyway to totally shut it off if I am not using it?
Also, on the top right tool bar, there is a "bi-head" arrow of VMF 3.0, how to get rid of it?
Mail is running in the background, but it won't quit or open. I need to reboot (i.e. hold down start for 10 seconds) to restart. Other applications are also very slow to respond during this, incl. Safari. I'm on a Late 2007 Macbook running 10.6.2, which I updated yesterday.

After I updated my iTunes, which previously have been working with no problems at all, it suddenly began not working.
The problem I have is, that when i open iTunes, nothing happens. I can see it's running in the Task Manager, but I can't get it to open.
I cant figure out how to change the background color of it in candybar. I'm sick of the standard grey mac color. When I'm in candybar I go to the dock section-->view-->dock-->preview background..the options under preview background are greyed out. Also when I am in the dock section-->view-->background-->change color. I try changing the color but it doesn't change. Am I doing something wrong..or what?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Macbook Pro and I have been recently changing around my backgrounds including my login background. However, when I changed my background via command in the terminal by switching the defaultdesktop.jpg with another picture in the CoreServices folder, My picture does not show up on the login screen instead it is just a plain blue screen. Is there anyway to restore the original login background settings?because I actually found a program "loginox" that easily changes the login picture however, it will not open because it says I have changed the original background photo.
View 1 Replies View RelatedRandomly on my computer I noticed very high CPU use while the computer was otherwise idle. I have narrowed it to the launchd and syslogd processes, taking up roughly 85% of my CPU for no good reason. I do have a TM backup that I could restore from, but that takes a while, so is there any way I could make them stop? (Already tried quitting from Activity monitor, it simply restarted my computer and didn't fix the problem)EDIT- Nevermind, it just went away on its own. Weird.

My MacBook Pro continues to show random unexplainable processes in the Activity Monitor window. Nothing seems to be wrong with any aspect of the laptop and functions correctly?

Pre Snow Leopard I ran around 65~ processes
Post Snow Leopard, 63 processes
Take in account about 5-10 processes are my own. I thought SL removed a lot of useless processes. I will try a clean install and report back later.
why I have two processes running dashboard with the 64bit one needing significantly more RAM?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am a windows dude, you can tell. I need to turn off unnecessary processes on a Mac. In "Windows", I would edit the startup processes... and in Computer admin, turn off all "services" I did not need.
What do I do on a Mac? I need it to be permanent, not temporary (like I know how to shut off iTunes helper for a session- I want it off after restarts, too.
Also, I want to pare this mac down to just the essentials- any advice for what to kill, and what I should not touch?
I would like to disable some processes from starting upon login, but can't figure out how. I am not referring to the Login Items of System Preferences>Accounts. I have checked /Library/StartupItems/ (empty), /Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist (essentially empty), and ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist (which only contains the things that i do want, it matches my account preferences).
