I have an old release of windows 7 installed via bootcamp on my macbook pro and it works fine and great. However I want to install a newer release and I am not sure what way it should be done. Can I simply run the set up in my current windows 7 installation and install the new release this way? or would I have to format the bootcamp partition and go through the bootcamp assistant again?

I'm operating on a MacBook Air that i recently updated to OS X 10.9.2. Along with the update, Java 7 was installed. I need to have Java 6 Update 20 installed to use some programs on this computer for work. I've gotten the files to install that update, but when I attempt to do so I receive a message stating that I cannot install on my disk. A newer version is already installed.
I've gone into finder > Go to Folder and deleted the Java folder after uninstalling java in the first place. This has not fixed my issue.
I've heard that there have been some differences between the older and newer Macbook screens - I'm thinking about buying a reburb unibody macbook and want to know how significant the difference is. If it's big enough I'll use my student discount to get a new mac with an iPod and then sell the iPod for the price difference, but that is a lot more work and initial money spent vs just getting a refurb. Does anyone have any experience with both?
View 12 Replies View RelatedI have a 23" cinema display from November of 2006. Is this compatible with my newer MacBook Pro, which is from June 2009. It's not the most recent MBP - I bought it just before they refreshed the line a week or two later. If the display will work, which adapter do I need? Micro DVI? Mini DisplayPort?

I have an early 2005 Mac mini, 1.42 Ghz G4 with Tiger, and I just got a used mid 2007 Mac mini with Tiger and an Intel Core 2 duo processor (dual 2.0 Ghz). Can I set up the newer one in target disk mode connected via firewire to the old one or is there a better way to do this? (hub, KVM, etc) If firewire, is there a certain type of firewire cable for this?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a first generation mac pro (Rev B I believe), and am currently having some issues with it.
If I decide to purchase a newer generation mac pro, would it be possible to jsut pull my current hard drive, put it in the new one, and have it work? I'm a photographer and work with Photoshop CS3, a 2001 version of Word:Mac and Excel:Mac, Photo Mechanic 4.51 and Transmit and Toast Titanium as the main programs I use. I can not presently find any of these install disks, so I'd like to try avoiding re-installing the software if I can avoid it.
The economy being what it is, I am trying to save money where I can...but I need my workstation to work. Right now I am already looking at replacing the Vid Card in my 1st gen mac pro, and hate thinking that purchasing another $350 ATI X1900 card from Apple is my best option. If a newer generation mac pro is better for me in the long run, it might be $2k well spent.
I only update my web site a few times a year, and since the last time I bought a new computer and have a newer version of iweb. When I try to update my web site (on mobileme), it builds all of the pages and then gives an unknown error and fails. I also can't use the file menu/visit site, which indicates to me that it doesn't recognize my domain as the same site.

This may sound like a dumb question, but I'm a bit confused on computer speeds. I know a higher clock speed will be faster, but...
Lets say the Intel model from two years ago was a 2.8 Octo. For single threaded tasks, would a brand new 2.8 Quad be faster? Why or why not?
Hoping to keep Mini awhile longer but not happy with the speed. Would a new HD increase speed?? Currently mini = Processor 1.5 GHz PowerPC G4 1GB. What is the max HD I could but in it??

I've been contemplating recently (as most mac users do) about switching my 2 year old MBP (2.2 ghz, 2gb ram, 8600m) to the new MBP (15" 2.8, newer gfx, touchpad and a few minor details).
I've been eying the ebay prices for some time and my particular model (with charger, snow leopard, original accessories but w/o box) is valued at about 700gbp. Perhaps people might disagree with me here - how much is it really worth ?
My main point / question is really at what point should I ditch the existing MBP in favor of the new mbp - does it really offer me that much of a benefit at this time to upgrade? I'd sure like the new graphics card in there (is it really that much better?) but I'm not sure there's a significant enough difference there.
On the other hand if I wait much longer the MBP will become pretty devalued and not get me much back for the new and improved MBP - maybe apple's going to improve them soon anyway?
My G4 12" PowerBook will not burn DVDs with the newer 8x or faster DVDs.
It has the 2x burner in it and I have't been able to burn DVDs since I ran out of 2x disk some time ago. (I can't find any 2x disk around here any more.)
I have an important database created on my Mac using an old version of Filemaker II. (Version 1.1v2 1989) Since I have gone to OSX, the old program will not work on my newer Intel Mac. I am trying to find out how to convert the old files to a newer version of FileMaker that will allow me to read and add to the file.
I have a version 6.0 and 9.0 of Filemaker Pro, but neither will allow me to read the old database. Might have to step up from version to version and convert. We are at wits end and desperately need some expert help! Can anyone tell me how to do this. Files are a listing of 20+ years of articles and photos connected with a small magazine my wife and I publish.
I still have my older Mac OsXv10.4 Tiger software. I wasn't exactly happy with Safari browser as it would block many sites and were considered incompatible so I downloaded the free Firefox browser (the 2.0 version) of which I still have. I'm aware that there is a much newer version and would like to download that, but I've heard a lot of people saying they have been having severe problems with it, but then they have PCs and not Macs. So my question is for you Mac users that use Firefox, have you had major problems with the newer version? I'm real hesitant to download if I'm going to have the same problem PC users are having...like constantly crashing. Also would my old Tiger software be compatible? I don't want to upgrade to Leopard.

first off i'm a aerospace engineering student at the University of Texas. I know ill be taking classes using matlab and solid works so i wouldn't think it that farfetched to be using them on my computer.I initially was planning on buying a new MBP whenever they are updated with a newer graphics card (next summer?) with an external display. Lately though ive been rethinking that, i already have a MBP (specs in sig) that stays at my desk 95% of the time. Seeing as i really don't move my laptop around a lot, i am just thinking it would make more sense buying a Mac Pro (especially since i had already planned on buying an external display.) I would go for the 3.2 Quad seeing as apple is undoubtedly going to price the 6 core out of my price range. This would give me way more CPU power than whatever next years MBP update would be, not to mention the graphics (plan on going for the 5870) would blow the MBP's future graphic card out of the water.
View 15 Replies View RelatedI have a MacBook, 2,1 OS X 10.4.11 with all the software updates.
When I try to install X11 it says "cannot download as newer version installed".
I have downloaded Gimp, dragged it over to "Applications" and the installation asks for X11 "where is X11?" and I cannot find it!
What do I have to do?
I've been a Mac user for a few years now, and really love the apps on the Mac, and 99% of the time, never need anything thats on Windows. However, the time has come that I need to open a windows app via Darwin. Its asking me to install x11.app - which I've tried to do, but when I download it, it says there is already a newer version installed. I've never heard of, let alone installed x11.app before, so this confused me a little.
I've come onto these forums, and had a little search, to which I found out that you need to do something with the original OS disks to install x11.app via the install disk. I no longer have the install disks - I moved house 6 months ago, and had 3 boxes lost in transit, (Including my PS3, nearly 50 games a DVD player and all CD's / DVD's ) - and have never recovered them.
Is there any other way I can get this app to install?
I tried the new version (or what is supposed to be the new version of Safari for Tiger, but it loads as Safari 4.1 Tiger, and will not install because it says there is a newer version installed already. What is Apple doing? Did they simply rename version 4.1 as 4.1.2 and expect it to install?
