MacBook Pro :: Way To Force Discrete Graphics On Or Off?
May 9, 2010
Apparently there's a utility called gfxCardStatus that shows you if your 2010 i5/i7 MBP is using integrated graphics or discrete graphics and now allows you to switch between them at will. The feature is experimental, as the site stresses, but it seems stable enough if you only wish to use it once in a while as I did. (I tested a game that didn't trigger the discrete graphics with the discrete graphics forced on) If you can't wait for Apple to get their game on I suggest using it.

I researched on the internet on how to stop the discrete graphics from unnecessarily being switched into use.
From this site [url]... i found that if i typed in the key in the info.plist in the package contents of the application, the application would stop switching the discrete graphics on.

MPBr, 15", Early 2013 with dual graphics (Intel HD Graphics and AMD Radeon)
Running Maverics 10.9.3Â
What is happening:
1. Machine doesn't switch to AMD graphics no matter whatever app is running. In activity monitor even if some apps say "Requires High Perf GPU", the graphics card being used is still "Integrated".
2. Connecting to an external display via thunderbolt or HDMI doesn't work (external display doesn't turn on) either as it required discrete graphics too.
3. After a reboot (at what time I believe machine tries to use discrete graphics card), the display is always blank. Even the Apple logo on back of lid is turned off. Only way to get the display back is to close the lid and open it after 10 ~ 15 seconds at which time it probably switch back to integrated and comes alive.Â
What I have tried:
1. Reset PRAM.
2. Reset SMC.
3. Tried gfxCardStatus [URL] to no avail. If I manually switch to discrete card, gfxCardStatus checkmark say it has switched, but it doesn't.
4. Tried booting into hardware diagnosis (pressing D while booting) but was unable to get the screen turned on to proceed.Â

What's the likelihood that Apple could update the 13" Pro with a more powerful discrete graphics card like the 9800 GT or 260M GTX? That would enough for me to buy the 13" MBP!

why can't we have discrete graphics inside the mac mini? Two reasons. There isn't any space, and there's no way to connect it. To the first we could always mount the card outside the enclosure - I'm sure many of us here are able and willing to sacrifice the time needed to make that look pretty (or even the good looks) in order to get some better frame rates.

Late 2008 I think?
BTW, the reason I am asking is because I am interested in this new Steam software that Valve is putting out and I want to know how well my Mac will do with the games.

Hopefully someone has run across how to do this. I have a newer unibody 17, looking to have windows use the embedded video card instead of the discrete for power reasons. I'm running windows 7 x64, everything runs great but the battery life is an hour or two less than OSX, and at least an hour of that is due to it not utilizing the embedded video.

Sorry for the incredibly stupid question, but I just got the gfxCardStatus application for my i5, and was wondering whether turning on the NVIDIA video card will make applications like Mail, Firefox, etc. faster?
I read something about OpenCL, but am not really sure whether it works for all applications.
I find that turning on the NVIDIA card, instead of using the integrated Intel one, makes my laptop hotter.

Apple has been kind enough to replace my few week old iMac i7 with a new, refreshed model.I've heard that the graphics in the new iMac are discrete and separate from the motherboard.Does this mean the graphics card will be replaceable, albeit in a rather clumsy way?

The usual dilemma: to buy or to wait? Currently have a MacBook Alu and the LCD on this machine is simply horrible + I the glossy screen turned out to be pretty annoying (although I did like it initially).
I am thinking of getting a 15" with discrete graphics & matte screen (compared it side-by-side with a glossy @ AppleStore - the difference is HUGE)... but I could wait for a couple of months only if I knew that there was a 13" with a good screen/discrete graphics in development since I don't like the size of the 15" (weight is not an issue, it is mostly the ability to use it everywhere). I also compared the 13" MBP screen with a 15" (both glossy) and the 13" just sucks! Why can't they make the 13" a bit more expensive but give it a decent LCD? Even as an option? I have a Sony VAIO Z with a great matte 13" display, wish I could just transplant it into the the Mac
An ideal configuration for me would be a 13" with a decent matte screen and powerful graphics. But then, I'm a bit reluctant to wait as Apple may actually make matters worse by having worse graphics on new-gen MBP and perhaps no matte option whatsoever. I really don't care about the Arrandale vs Penryn, dual-core vs triple-core... whatever. The only part of the computer that I look @ all day long is the display, so it has to be a good one.

Lucidlogix have a real time GPU balancing solution that can render scenes in real time using BOTH the integrated sandybridge GPU and an ATI or NVidia GPU. If used in the next gen macbook pro it could make the macbook pro a real gaming machine. One little chip on the motherboard could change everything. Everyone email Steve Jobs. Seriously this could be awesome, Alienware performance on a thin Macbook Pro. Make noise bang the internet drum, he may listen. [URL]

My Time Machine drive is a USB hard disk, and when I plug it in, I am unable to get it to eject (even if the Time Machine preferences show that I am NOT backing the disk up). When I unplug it, I get the warning message about not unplugging drives before ejecting. Is is there a way for me to "force eject" or force anything accessing my time machine volume to shut down, so that I can properly eject it?

I've tried all the methods. I have a 2+ year old Macbook Pro. The drive was a bit bowed down, but a screw drive forcing the casing back up fixed that. I have tried holding down the eject button on restart as well as the mouse. I tried the command-control-p-o combo and it wouldn't boot into the open firmware.
The laptop keeps trying to read the disk, but the disk is apparently unreadable. So what the hell am I to do? I can't even get into Mac OS X or use the laptop.

My PPPoE is set to "Connect automatically when needed", and my login items include Dropbox. Therefore my MBP automatically tries to connect to PPPoE every time when it wakes up from sleep. However, most of the time the connection would fail, staying in the "Connecting..." status forever; no internet available. To terminate this awkward status I clicked "Disconnect", then it just switched to "Disconnecting…" and stayed there forever, not allowing me to reconnect. The problem can be solved only by rebooting the computer, and can be avoided if I disable "Connect automatically when needed" (manual connection always works).Â
If I want to have "Connect automatically when needed" enabled, how do I force terminate and retry the connection everytiwhen it fails?

I put a CD in, but it never came up on my desktop so my player never actually read the disk. I've tried alot of ways to eject it, but nothing has worked. down eject and the trackpad. I've also tried to eject it from the startup menu. It sounds like it is trying to eject the disk, but it never comes out.

Say an app has crashed and I then bring up the force quit dialog. I then select the app I want to kill, and press the force quit button. Now as the little popup that says "Are you sure you want to force quit" is coming down, my machine freezes. This has happened 3 times exactly the same way. Other than that, the machine is smooth as clockwork. I'm kinda thinking there is some sort of GFX card bug or something?

i am having some issues with my macbook these past 3days, and its just not the way i want it to be.. alright, let me describe what happened:
few days ago I was using my macbook as usual, then suddenly comes a terrible lag with my macbook(there's a delay for everything at about 30-45secs). it's impossible for me to restart it, so i did a "force restart(holding onto the power button".
After that, i couldn't turn on my macbook anymore, i kept getting stuck at the first screen(where the apple logo and a spinning wheel under it).. that was my first encounter with such a problem on my macbook. what i found out is that i got an error message saying "open error 5 input/output acard......", but couldn't repair it under disk utility. then went to search the internet and decided to restore from time machine backup. I didn't get any sleep for one whole night because of that!!
After the restoration, now my macbook is acting very very strangely.. like if i left my macbook restarting itself, and come back later it would hang at the login page, but the mouse pointer would still be working though(just can't key in my password or click on anything).. feels like the start up time is much slower, i get slow response at times and other minor minor stuff..

I'm getting rather panicky now. I was trying to connect to a network drive on my MacBook when I got a beachball. Nothing would work, not even force quit would come up. So I held down the power button until it went off, and then switched it back on again. It got as far a blank blue screen but no further. I tried it again and this time it didn't get past the grey screen with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel. So I took the battery out, unplugged from the mains and held the power button down for over 10 seconds. Then held down Command Alt P R to reset the PRAM. That didn't solve anything. This is the first reboot since some security updates on Saturday past. I'm running Leopard and it's an oldish Macbook, Core 2 Duo with 2 x 2 GB sticks of RAM.

So I was on stick am yesterday and safari started to bog down, then I couldn't scroll or click on anything at all. So I proceeded to go to force quit menu and the cursor froze. I'm new to mac so i'm upset. Do macs freeze often? If its safaris fault doesn't that mean that the OS shouldn't crash anyway
