MacBook Pro :: Unable To Know Optical Bay/OCZ/raid 0?

Dec 1, 2010

My MBP is 5,1, at last few months I use 2 HDD in raid 0, it fine and smooth, but after I upgrade 2*SSD ( OCZSSD2-2VTXE60G ) the nightmare is coming, only see one SSD (in org hdd bay), the optical bay never see, at first time I thought may be SSD is dead, so try to replace them, both SSD is work, second thought is optical bay dead, so put the hdd back, it work.

I don't what's going wrong, I just thought optical is not fit OCZ, may I know who is using OCZ in raid 0 please kindly tell me which optical you using.

Mac Pro :: Unable To Know Optical Bay RAID?

Jun 12, 2010

If I needed to mount two drives in the empty optical bay and put both of them on RAID 0, would this and this be the only 2 things I would need?

Also, with the Pro Caddy 2, would I need one of their PCIe cards? Their site says that a card is needed, but since I would be getting the RAID card, would I need to even get one of theirs or would the RAID card be all I need?

They give three options for PCIe cards with the Pro Caddy 2: none, nonbootable PCIe card, and bootable card.

So would I be good with just the areca 1210 and the Pro Caddy 2 without a card or would I need a separate card for the caddy?

MacBook :: Unable To Recognize Newly Installed Optical Drive

Jun 24, 2009

So, I have a 13" white MacBook that is about three years old. Recently, the Combo Drive stopped reading CD-Rs (possibly all discs in general, but I only ever use it to burn CDs, so I wouldn't have ever known), so I decided to try to install a new Super Drive myself.

Following a guide on [URL], I installed the new drive, but when I turned my computer back on, it was not recognizing the drive at all. System Profiler was saying "This system does not contain any ATA devices. If you have any ATA devices installed, check that they are connected and powered on." I was then able to reinstall my old Combo Drive, which my computer recognized immediately. Thinking that I may have just not connected something tightly the first time, I tried a second time. Same thing happened.

So, my question is, is there anything I may be missing or does this definitely mean the drive is defective? I just want to make sure I'm not sending back a functional drive before I go ahead and do so.

Mac Pro :: Unable To Know MP 08 Raid?

Feb 24, 2008

Ive heard conflicing statments that the raid is software/hardware. anyone know for sure what it is (Im not talking about that card you can buy).

If it is software raid does this take a toll on the processors? is it serious or does it not matter at all.

IF it does matter. should I buy a exteran raid card? is there a mac compatible one. I just need basic raid0.

I just bought 2 samsung spinpoint F1 750s in anticipation of my new mac. But just want to make sure that raid is a wise decision.

for those who are thinking about replying about the dangers of raid. I know. I have time machine. if the raid goes down then so be it. such is life. I will have backups.

Mac Pro :: Unable To Know Raid 1/0?

Nov 8, 2009

OK I do some Video Editing and Motion Graphics with FCP and Adobe After Effects.

I have a Mac Pro 2009 with 4 1TB Drives and 2 1TB Lacie Fire Wire 800 Drives.

This is the setup i have

1st Drive Mac OSX

2nd Drive is Windows 7 OS

3rd & 4th Striped and Mirrored to the 2 Lacies External Drives that are Striped. (raid 1 + 0)

My first question: is this a bad system? should i set it up a different way?

Second: is If a Drive goes out in the Raid 1+0 how will i know and how can i put a new drive in to fix it? How does this work?

Third: I set the RAID up with disk utility, is this ok, bad or good?

Fourth: IF the the OS Drive goes out will and i replace it and format it, will the RAID 1+0 Still be there? some where i read that its OS dependant?

Mac Pro :: Unable To Know Raid 0/backup?

Apr 14, 2009

I have an 2008 2.8 octo with the stock 320gb WD drive. I use an external 1tb Seagate FreeAgent to backup. I use Super Duper to backup a bootable clone. I am interested in both more storage space and faster response.

1. If I were to get another of these WD 320gb units and make a striped raid using disk utility, I would get a 640gb volume, correct?

2. Could I back up the 2 drive raid volume to my external drive just like I do now?

3. Could I restore to either a striped raid or a single drive off the backups on my external in the event that after a hardware failure I decided either to replace the bad drive or just go back to using a single drive?

4. Would a two drive raid comprised of two 8mb cache WD 320gb units perform as well or better than using just a single Samsung Spinpoint drive, which is the other option I have considered?

The WD unit is $49 shipped, and a 500gb spinpoint is $59 shipped, so cost is about the same.

I just want to get the most bang for the buck out of my brokedick $50 storage upgrade, and I also want to be sure that I have a little piece of mind with my external drive backups.

what would you think is a better set-up,

3x internal drives (all of the same model, probably WD 640's) set in raid 0 (both serve as boot drive and scratch disk) occupying bays 1, 2, and 3. In this set-up, everything (DVD's, music, photos, final cut media) would be stored on this array.

OS X :: Unable To Work With Networked Optical Drive

I have created a image of my macbook pro (2006), on a DL-R disk. Apparently the macbook pro 2006 cannot read DL-R disks. I know that apple has a networked optical drive feature for the macbook Air. Would I be able to use this feature on my macbook pro?

Hardware :: Unable To Work With Optical Drive / Can't Pick Cd

Dec 17, 2007

When ripping CD's with my new iMac 20", occasionally a CD will start to initialize then it will disappear from the desktop. I can eject the CD using Disk Utility or even using the hard-button on the Mac keyboard but other than that it is as though the CD is not there. Then, when I put the CD back in again all is well and it comes right up. I have never had this problem with the same CD twice in a row.

Also the drive seems really picky - iTunes will hang when trying to rip a CD that is at all "well used" (OK I don't take care of my CD's as well as I should but they work fine in my Windows machines).

Hardware :: Can A RAID 1 Guardian Maximus Rebuild Easily / Have Partitioned The RAID Set

Dec 2, 2009

I just bought a Guardian Maximus RAID1 kit and I have two 1TB drives in it. I'm using it over Airport Extreme as an airdisk (mac osx 10.6.2)

My question is simply: am I running a risk by partitioning it into two partitions? Should I ever have to rebuild the failed disk (which I understand is really simple with the Guardian Maximus) - will it have trouble doing two partitions? I'm using one 500gb partition for time machine and one 500gb partition as redundant itunes/media.

Is it possible to get a highpoint raid controller and put those 4 drives in a raid 5 array (and then create partitions inside that array) - or do you need to have 1 drive by itself for the operating system, and then create a raid array using the remaining 3 drives?

Lastly, are the highpoint 3500 series a decent card? and fully compatible?

Mac Pro :: Raid Speed ... Raid 5 Vs Straight Sata HDs

Jan 28, 2008

ive put 4 of the hitachi 1tbs in my new mac pro.. and i really want to do Raid on them eventually.. and buy the pricey apple raid card.. i'll do it.. but speed wise:

How fast is a Sata connection straight from HD>Motherboard... ~75mb/s?
Is the Raid 5 config with all those drives much faster... around ~110mb/s?

Do you know if there is anyway to get a 5th drive into the raid 5 array? using the ODD space.. or some externals too... i need as much as space as possible...

And boot camp wont work with raid card anymore? I was thinking to have the startup disc be a raptor to increase speed on the apps, how would it integrate with the raid card, etc

I am wondering if software RAID would be alright or if it's so bad it's not worth doing. Also, there is small chance that I could buy a RAID card later on, how would I install it? I will be using it for 3D animation with Maya and some zbrush modeling. Also I will be doing some Photoshop and illustrator and maybe some gaming on win 7 boot camp. Feel free to list any other pros and cons about either a software RAID or hardware RAID, I wana make sure I have all the details before making a final decision on it.
