been having increasing sleep problems. now it is impossible to tell if it is on or not, but it heats and i can perform a forced shut down by holding the button down for 10 seconds. i can hear the HD stop. when i boot up, there is no display and no backlight on the keyboard, hence i cannot enter password.

I do have a problem with my MacBook unibody late 2009 model no A1342. When I start up the machine the display doesn't go on. I do hear the start up sound buit nothing happens to the display. The Apple logo on the back doesn't light up as well.

So just recently, whenever I restart my mbp and hold down the option key for the bootcamp option, it is taking atleast a minute to get the option of either mac os or windows to be displayed. Earlier, this was very feasible as the options would be displayed rather instantaneously. Could someone please help me out as the wait time is horrendous to the least.

Initially started with my MACPRO not waking up from sleep and has to force the shut down with power button. Finally realised it was due to my Epson scanner connected via USB...
The main issues now is with the display, black screen on startup. I can still control the volume and disk eject/close, just no display. Force shut down with power button numerous time but futile. Finally solved it with SMC reset.
it becomes an on and off issues... and continuously I solved it with SMC reset.... sometimes needed 2 or 3 resets to get it to work,and finally for the past few days... SMC reset can't solve it either... no display on startup, and same thing I can control the volume and disk eject/close. Have tried my monitor on other mac and it worked fine.
Now this is strange. if I let the mac cool off totally,after a SMC reset. the display will comes up fine...
My 2008 Mac Pro display remains black after start up. It is plugged in properly and the light comes on, but the screen stays black. It first started doing this about a week ago, but after a manual restart or two, it would start up properly with the display working. Today the display has remained black every time I've tried to start up.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI own an early 2008 iMac running Snow Leopard. A few months ago, it started getting a little buggy and running slow, you know, things you would expect from a computer that's now 2 years old. But then it started freezing and giving me "kernel panics". Of course, the first thing I did was install VirusBarrier and remove any and all viruses it could find, and I repaired the disk and disk permissions and ran all the diagnostic tests from the install DVD. Then I left it unplugged for a day, upgraded the memory from 2 GB to 4 GB and did everything a second time. After all that, everything seemed to work just fine.
Now it seems to be starting all over again! This time the virus scan only picked up a few Windows viruses on an old external hard drive and repairing the disk, disk permissions, and running diagnostics turned up nothing. I've done everything I know to do, short of taking the thing back to Apple! Right now, the main issue is this bug at startup that's really just freaking me out. Linked is a video of what happens. As can be seen from the screenshot below, each morning when I put the iMac on... they appear right before the login screen for approx 4-5 seconds. Is this something to worry about? Done a PRAM reset
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy early 2008 2.8GHz 8-core Mac Pro died last week. I tried all the usual stuff and ended up taking it to the local Apple store genius bar. They ran their diagnostics tool on it and did not find any problems so I had to leave it for a more thorough test. The Apple Store called a few days later and said it was either the main logic board and/or one or both CPU's. They -say- they replaced the main logic board and that did not fix it. They told me it would be ~$2800 USD plus labor to replace the the main logic board and both CPU's. So I took the machine over to another authorized Apple Service center for a second opinion. This other service center seemed confident they could determine which component(s) are defective. I am expecting a call from them on Tuesday of this week and hope to find out more then.
The symptoms are: When powering the machine I hear the startup sound and the display shows the apple logo. The machine boots for a little while (disk activity is heard) then the machine freezes for about 30 seconds then reboots or just freezes indefinitely. This happens with my 10.6.5 boot system, a second 10.6.x boot system on another internal drive as well as from the 10.6 SL DVD installer disc. Apple could not boot it off their network based systems either. Same symptoms on all startup disks tried so far...
So, I'd like to know where to go if I need to obtain parts and do the repair myself. I've built a number of PC's in the past and have no concerns about the undertaking. I just need to determine which parts I need. I'm not looking to "upgrade" the machine however if faster CPU's are available for a similar price I'd probably opt for the upgrade. At this point I'd be completely satisfied replacing the defective components with the same stuff that's in the machine now. Any pointers/links/tips/etc. would be most appreciated.
on startup, macbook pro showed flashing gray folder with question mark, but no startup. After several retries, now shows circle with diagonal diameter, and still no startup. worked fine yesterday.

6 month old MBP 15", been running 100% fine, plugged it into a projector the other day and it auto changed the screen resolution. I unplugged the device, went into settings and changed my screen resolution back to it's factory size as well as command & the minus key to make sure I wasn't zoomed in on anything.
I then did a system update for the following; Airport utility, Safari, Ricoh Printer, Digital Camera Raw, java, Itunes.
Restarted the computer as the updates had finished, then when turning back on the loading screen with the grey background, apple symbol and rotating loading symbol was zoomed in as much as the resolution would allow. So i restarted a couple more times, still the same thing - every time i turn the computer on the loading screen is massivly zoomed in, once it's done loading and moves to the log in screen it is fine.
I've tried plugging into the projecter again and editing my settings, that did nothing. It's like because i updated while the settings where wonky it's saved it somehow?

My wife's macbook monitor is destroyed due to happy 2 year old. It won't be worthwhile to replace the monitor and it is not fixable without some expensive work being done on it, therefore I would like to use our TV as an external monitor and retire the macbook to being a mediia computer. I have connected it to the TV, and I see an empty desktop, as far as I can determine it looks like it is treating the TV as a secondary display - that the desktop is extended onto - so I cannot actually interact with the normal desktop. When I try to run things using keyboard shortcuts I hear some sounds of things starting, but I don't see anything on the TV. So what I need to do is to have some way to tell it to treat the secondary display as the primary display.

I hooked up my macbook pro to a mini display port to a dvi -> hdmi to my tv no problem. However, when I hooked up the mini display -> dell monitor, I get nothing. The screen is black. The weird thing is that my macbook pro recognizes that a second monitor is plugged in... it just won't display anything

When I use 1920x1080, I only get 60 Hz and the display is a fuzzy (text). Also, there are black bars. Why?
Will my issues be solved using a Mini DisplayPort -> DVI connection? Or should I exchange it for the 2209?
My brand new 15 inch MacBook Pro was working fine for a week. Today the display went to sleep and when I tried to wake it, it remained dark, items barely visible. I could see the display brightness meter changing, but the brightness did not. Restarting didn't help. Called Apple and they're going to replace the computer. Has this happened to anybody else? Note: I have the hi-res anti-glare display.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an early 2008 MBP 15" (I think detailed specs are in my signature) and recently (over the last week or so) when I move my laptop display up and down (physically), the screen has this thing where it gets inverted and what not. It is very annoying, and I have been having to constantly fiddle with it everytime I move my laptop around (I use it both as a desktop and as a laptop, so this happens a lot). I recently switched to using it clamshell mode as a means of avoiding this in desktop mode, but occasionally I'll still need to move it around places and what not. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem before, or has any ideas as to what might be a better solution. I would take it in for repair, but I don't really have 300+ dollars to spend on a repair right now. I think it might be related to the data cable connection to the display of the computer, since it is rather intermitment, and requires fiddling for the screen to not be inverted/messed up/displaying black lines, etc. I can post more details about it, pictures or something if that would help any of you geniuses out there as well.

Do you think it would be strange to pair the 15 or 17 inch MBP with the matte anti glare display with the 24" display? It would be used mostly with the external display so I'm wondering if it makes more sense for both panels to be the same. As I already have the external display I'm not open to getting something else. I'm just wondering if having the different types of displays would mess with my eyes.

As the title states. I am looking for an external display that matches the display on my black MacBook. I want one with the same gloss finish as my MacBook, this way I can calibrate both screens to look the same. That way when I switch screens it doesn't look different.
Anyone know of a screen that looks identical to the (previous generation) MacBook? I was thinking of getting a Samsung T240 but it has a different finish. How are ASUS screens? Any screens out there that have the same gloss finish?
If there's a thread on this, feel free to close this one, but I searched and couldn't find anything. I need a guide on how to remove the display casing on a unibody MBP with an anti glare screen. Specifically, how to remove the actual top shell, where the Apple logo is. The LCD panel itself, I don't need to take apart. Is this possible? If someone has a link to a guide, that would be awesome.

Since the new Macbook Pro with Retina Display lacks an eject key, the best I have been able to do is set a hot corner. I don't like this as much -- especially since it is possible to trigger the hot corner without intending to.
I have a macbook pro with retina display that was purchased in 2012 and I am running Mavericks. I have been trying to mirror my mac to my apple tv but the the airplay icon will not display on the menu bar. I have tried turning airplay on and off on the apple tv without success. Under the display settings in system preferences it says No Devices Detected.I have already tried all the suggestions in the support pages to no avail.

After I have unplugged the adaptor, my MacBook still tries to read the second display, and switches back-and-forth between a blue screen & my desktop. It stabilizes once I plug the adaptor back in. What is causing this problem, and how do I fix it so I can use my primary display without having the adaptor constantly plugged in?

While using Google Sketchup and several other prgrams concurrently my macbook air cpu heats up substantiall. I like keeping the air "open" to allow for maximum heat disipation but of course this keeps the air screen on while I only want to use my external monitor. Is the only way to turn of the air screen turning down the brightness and using the "Mirror Display" option or is there another setting which alows my to utilize only the external display while the screen is open on the air?
