I'm running a couple of apps in XP through Parallels - coherence mode. Technically, I shouldn't have to see the Windows desktop. Question is - do I have to go in and manually shut down Windows before I shut down my MacBook Pro?

How do I prevent my Mac Book Pro from shutting down after a period of time? I have set Preferences, Energy saver to "never" but still it shuts down while trying to download a large file. The file is 4.14GB and at my slow connection speed may take 48hrs+.

I have a MacBook which has recently been shutting down when it feels like :/ this all started a week or two ago (well not the shut downs but other issues that I'll get too), basically the fan I think has been knocked as it is bumping the top or something as the whirring is getting loud and it sounds like every now and again it hits something
Also CPU usage seems to be averaging out at 20% for Safari and 100% for HD Video where as it used to be very small amount for Safari and 30 - 40% for HD.

Is there a simple way to shut off the computer at a specific time?
It seems like an easy thing to do that shouldn't require writing a fancy script.

My Mac Pro (2008, 8-core, 10GB, 2x1TB RAID 0) system takes a long time to shutdown or restart. Typically over a minute. I didn't think this was so bad (though I think when I first got the system is shutdown must more quickly) until I got a MacBook and it shuts down in around 10 seconds. I was wondering if the slow shutdown time on the Mac Pro is normal and whether there is any way I could see what its doing while shutting down. It just sits there at the shutdown screen with the twirling icon and I'd prefer to see some messages or status so I know what is going on.

How do you close multiple tabs at the same time? Is there a "close all other tabs" command?

I think this happened just after I did something with my Keychain app: My default mail app - Entourage from MS Office 2004 - remembers my password for entering my mail as long as it's open and active, but when I close it or shut down my machine - I have to feed in my pass each time. It started right after I changed something in my keychain app, but don't really remember what where.

what the difference is between the commands 'close window' and 'close all windows'? They seem to me to both have the same effect. In my earlier version of Safari, if I opened a new web page, it just replaced the earlier one, now though the new pages just keep accumulating. T

I use Daylite and Daylite Server on my MBP connected to the net and sync my iPad running Daylite Touch through my 3G connection. It works great while I have my MBP running. I want to set up my MBP so that it will run without shutting down (screen blanked out). I just want to do this for a few days to see how it works out. If I like it I will get a Mac Mini to run as the server instead of the MBP.
The problem I am having is that no matter how I adjust the settings on the MBP, after awhile it shuts down Daylite and Daylite Server. Daylite Server shuts down and puts out an error message and everything just hangs there. I figure I must be doing something wrong in the settings but don't know what. I tried searching the forums, google, apple support, etc. but haven't found anything - of course I am probably searching all those wrong too.

When im playing a game in bootcamp, my computer just randomly turns off. I thought it might be from overheating, but I started using a cooling pad to try and help, and it shut down almost right away the next time I went to play. It happens occasionally when im running osx, but not nearly as often.

After I bought it, I noticed that the fan was making loud noises when I used it too long. I know it is normal for it to overheat after a long period of use but it doesn't just overheat, the fan starts making a weird grinding noise. I thought that it was just dirty and it wasn't affecting the way my computer was running, so I just ignored it.
It has been almost a year now since I first bought it used and the fan has gotten a lot quieter, but just starting last week I was watching a movie on Netflix and right in the middle of my movie, the computer just randomly shut off. I figured it was overheating. But, even after it had cooled down, I went back to watching my movie and within 10-15 minutes, it did it again!

I have a Macbook Pro that is a few years old. It's been fine until recently - it shuts off - poof - when I try to play certain games on Facebook, or watch a video on Facebook. I can watch videos fine on a site like YouTube. I thought perhaps it was the browser I was using (Firefox) but it's not. I ran disk Utility and that didn't . Software Update says I'm up to date. I'm running OS 10.4.11

I use my MBP (Unibody, 2.8Ghz, 4GB RAM, running 10.6) in clamshell mode connected to an Apple Cinema Display ... Been doing that for a year and a half now and never had any problems. Now, since a week or so, my MBP keeps shutting down randomly, probably due to heat issues. So I installed SMCFanControl and run it at max RPM. Still no help.My system reaches over 90?C before it shuts down. Now I disconnected my MBP from everything (ACD, speakers, external HD, iPhone dock, Ethernet cable) and when running on its own off battery power, the temperature has already dropped down to 60?C and it stopped shutting down.

I just bought a 13 inch MBP yesterday. I know macbooks are supposed to sleep when the lid is closed by default. But a few times when I opened the lid, the computer had appeared to turn completely off. The indicator light on the front was steady when the lid was closed, not blinking like I believe it is supposed to be when sleeping.

I erase the macintosh hd drive as suggested, also did the ctr, command, option, p and r step and when i try to reinstall the mac os x snow leopard it goes through the process and gets as far as 3 minutes into installation and then shuts down. Even when I try to install the mac os x lion from the disc utilities screen it goes throu the same process and then shuts down and reboots. it constantly shuts down and reboots.

I am running the Software OS X 10.9.4 (13E28) and have a macbook air, 13 inch, mid 2012.
I am in no way an advanced user of this computer only used for browsing internet and some college work
Recently i have noticed a small niggling problem, that my mac is shutting down when left idle for a time, instead of going to sleep like it always used to do.
Now when i come back from being away i have to restart it up and at times have lost windows ive been working on.
I tried to alter some of the settings in the Power saving option but it doesnt have anything related to the shutting down of the computer. I used to be able to close the lid and it went to sleep but now i think its shutting the laptop down too.
Obviously the quick start up time on the mac, and the option to put it to sleep means this isnt a massive deal but i was just wondering how to fix?
