MacBook Pro :: Frequently Losing Internet Access - Timeout Error?
Jun 11, 2010
I'm on a boat in Fiji, using a Vodafone wireless dongle, and keep losing my connection. My vodafone software and my apple network software show I'm still connected, but suddenly I can't get into another page, or if I'm downloading a software update, I get a message that I have a timeout error. I then disconnect my connection and re-connect and then things start happening again. However, I have not been able to stay active long enough to download my apple software updates which is really frustrating. It seems to happen more often when I'm downloading something sizeable, like a video or software update, but happens other times as well. I'm a mac novice, (bought this, my first mac about 10 months ago) and not terribly computer savvy to begin with. Looking through this forum, I'm confused by much of what I read, but I'm beginning to think this problem may be beyond my capacity to solve.

For several weeks I've lost internet connection on my iMac every day or so; the wifi icon changes to show a ! and is otherwise greyed out. My internet connection is via a relatively new Time Capsule (2011) which has an ethernet cable connecting it to my Sky broadband router. I moved to this new Sky broadband router in early Jan 2012 (changing to Sky as a Broadband provider) and it works nicely as a router. My iPhone, iPad, AppleTV and a range of other devices (including an Apple Airport Express connected to a Sky TV HD box to enable it to download movies) have continued to work on the internet without problems.
The IP address of the iMac (27 inch quad core i7, 8 GB RAM, fully up to date on Lion) disappears from the Network settings when the problem arises but the connection of the iMac to the wifi (and backing up to the Time Capsule) still works. I can even use a VNC app on the iPad to connect to the iMac on the same wifi LAN when the IP address has gone and the ! is showing in the wifi icon on the menu bar. To get reconnected to the internet, I just restarted the iMac and it was then back accessing the web nicely. Eventually the iMac would not connect to the internet at all. It would momentarily get an IP address from the router and then lose it again. I then tried taking the iMac to the Apple Store.
Various diagnostics run in store at Genius Bar and during the week and the problem (using the same account) was not replicated. On its return home, it was still not working on the internet. I then tried booting into 'safe mode'. This enabled a stable and reliable connection to the internet! After several days in this mode, I re-installed Lion and booted into normal mode again. The problem returned and has been with the iMac since. However, at least a restart of the iMac gets it straight back on to the internet again. I suspect some sort of corrupted network preference file or the like. But where? The disconnection from the internet can happen any time of day; for example it happened while typing this message but more often than not it happens when the computer is unattended.

Recently my MBP retina late 2012 started crashing with the screen going all black leaving the keyboard lights on. I had to force it to restart. After a couple of attempts I could finally access the computer for about 10 min before it crashed again, during which i could see the logs. As of know it has been on for 1 hour without any issues but when I run some more hardware-intense programs it crashes. Since i bought the computer from a private person without insurance im not entitled to the 3 year warranty.Â
Im getting these errors:

I was able to access this specific website for months using my mac - both on firefox and safari.
Recently, it won't let me sign it. It just loads for 5 minutes or so then gives me a network timeout error. However, I am able to access the site on internet explorer using my PC.

Mac Pro with 10.7.3 and Minolta 1250e PagePro printer, which is listed under the Driver tab as a Generic Postscript Printer. Apple did not have anything for this model listed under the popup menu selection "Select Printer Software". The driver for printer was written for classic so I can't install it from the CD.Â
Everything prints, but an extra page is also printed with the following message:Â
ERROR: timeout
OFENDING COMMAND: timeoutÂ
STACK:Â
-filestream-Â
Printer is connected to a usb port which connected directly into the back of the Mac.

What seems to be on some kind of time schedule, my network connection times out. The message "a connection timeout occured" is displayed, rendering my attempts at re-connection useless. After hours of troubleshooting(my router included) and checking out other Mac forums, I have no solutions but to power cycle my router. This pretty much makes my MB useless unless using a wired internet connection outside of my home network. I've done tons of research online and have encountered hundreds of people with the same problem. My machine is a late 2011 Macbook Pro.

Imac, osx Leopard. Was working fine for many months (except for the 27 vertical lines but won't bore you with that), I bought a powered usb2 hub to power a usb hard-drive, when connecting the hub after a few minutes the Internet connection stopped and does so any time I connect the hub, now without the hub being connected the internet stops and starts every few minutes making it impossible to do any work. Other macs in the house are unaffected (s I'm having to write this on a minimac). Has something damaged the imac for good ?

Why does my Mac keep losing internet connection every 5 minutes - I end up having to turn wifi OFF and ON again each time.
As all other devices in the house connect seamlessly to the wireless router, the problem is only with my MAC desktop.Â

When I try to get email or go on the internet in general after being away for a short while, the internet is not connected and has trouble connecting. I have DSL and should always be connected. I also have a laptop (non Apple running Ubuntu) and there is no problem there.

I just recently installed Windows 7 on my macbook pro. Everything seemed to work well, especially after I installed boot camp for windows and its drivers.
However I can't seem to connect to the internet. My router is detected but when I select to connect to it I get no internet access.

currently I connect to the internet by doing this: Go to System Preferences / Network. Then I select my internet provider name on the left pane and finally click on the Connect button. That's all. This internet profile has a PPoE service name, an account name and a password. My internet connection uses a cable DLink router (it's not wireless).Â
Question:Â
1) Does the password I mentioned above mean that my neighbors can't access my internet, or are they able to do that and, in this case, I need to set another password somewhere else?Â
2) If I need another password, how and where do I set it,

Recently, my MacBook (purchased summer of 2007 and running Snow Leopard) stopped connecting to the internet wirelessly. It can connect to the net via ethernet. And it can connect to networks and other computers wirelessly to exchange files, but not to connect to the internet through them. It backs up to my Time Capsule wirelessly without a hitch. This seems like a software problem, not a hardware problem, to me. Why I can't get internet access wirelessly?

I spent a year in Turkey as an exchange student, and of course I brought my macbook with me. In Turkey they are kind of uptight about which websites you're allowed to visit.
Youtube, last.fm and myspace are all blocked for (ridiculous) political reasons. Not really a problem, I could acces them via sites like vtunnel etc.
Now I'm back at home since several weeks, but still I'm not able to visit these sites and I get the same government-warning in Turkish. Anyone knows how to convince my macbook that I'm back in the free world?

When I was downloading the norton security suite, there was some problems with certain files not being "properly downloaded". Now I can't access any app or program that uses internet access. I've tried deleting and wiping the Notron program using the systemac uninstall.

I got my Macbook Air connected to the internet, and want to connect my iPod Touch to the internet through my Macbook Air. I saw people using their Macbook Pro to share the wi-fi through their AirPort. How about Macbook Air? As I don't see such option in the Sharing preference, I downloaded the AirPort Utility and it simply says I cannot install it.

I bought my Macbook Pro in January of this year and had to get the hard drive replaced over the weekend. It has been working fine except every-time I want to access the internet (using Safari) from sleep mode it will not connect to the internet and I have to restart the computer. The wireless sgnal in the top right corner by the clock will show maximum strength, but refuses to go to any websites. Never happened before my hard drive crashed and it's getting annoying to have to restart the computer every time I want to go on the internet.
