It is full permission in windows , I am logged in as admin in mac and there is no option in permissions menu in " get info " of this disk.I can not copy anything on my external disk?

I have a MBP running OS X 10.6. When I connect an external LaCie hard drive to my mac, I cannot copy files to it.
I went to "Get Info", and opened the "Sharing & Permissions". It says "You can only read" and I cannot change this. There is no lock key or anything for me to click.
Running Diks Util on my iMac 10.6.2. i am given this warning.

I wish to change partition scheme, sizes, in an external drive. All the partitions are MacOS extended (Journaled) and they map, according to the layout in Disk Utility, as follows: Partion 1, 2, 3,4 where 1 is at the top and 4, the bottom. I want to make partition 2 larger, so I decreased partition 1 by half. Now the layout is 1 a, 1b, 2,3,4., where 1b is now free space. Disk Utility will not allow me to increase the size of partition 2 by dragging the corner. Which of the following options (if any) will allow me to increase the size of partition 2, without erasing the data, using Disk Utility:Select partition 2 and manually writing a new value in the size box, equal to the present partition’s size plus the free space?If I delete partition 1 completely, will I then be able to increase the size of partition 2?If I delete partitions 1, 3, and 4, will I then be allowed to increase the size of partion 2?Is there another option?
(Actually, partition 3 is an eDrive, a data recovery utility created by TechTool Pro 7, so I don’t really know how it’s formatted.)

I was working on a hard disk, not my system disk, when I changed my permission from Read and Write to No Access. Now it doesn't show up in my Finder anymore and cant access my Final Cut Pro project I was working on. How can I change the disc permission back to Read and Write so I can get to my Hard Disc again?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an internal drive I've partitioned. I want to give my kids access to only one partition. When I use the 'get info' on a drive, I get 3 names for access. Me, '(unknown)' and 'everyone'. I cannot access the + and - below. even though the '+' is black and not grey. When I click on it, no list of users appears and the box disappears. It appears taht the finder is re-launched.

I'm running Leopard (10.5.5) on an Intel g5 iMac. I noticed this afternoon when trying to drop an app into my 'Applications' folder that I had to enter my password in order to do. Checking the 'Get info' pane for the folder I noticed that the permission status for 'everyone' was set to 'read only'. I have no idea how this happened but it must have been fairly recently as I was happily dropping apps into the folder only a few days ago. There are also two other 'names' in the panel labeled as 'unknown', one of whom has read & write permission and one of whom is also 'read only'.
There are only two user accounts on my mac and we are both administrators, so I don't know why there are so many entries under the 'Sharing and Permissions' section. So anyway, I unlocked the panel with my password and tried to flip the permission for everyone from 'read only' to 'read & write'. I got the following error dialogue: "The operation could not be completed. An unexpected error has occurred. Error code - 8076." I tried to add a new 'administrators' group to the permissions panel with read and write access but received the same error.
When I started uni years ago, we were given free 2G USB flash drives. The drives were partitioned in half so that there was a read/write partition to use for whatever and the other partition is read only - it has a bunch of files relevant to us students and links to all the relevant uni webpages and such. Now that I've finished uni I'd like to use my drive as one whole read/write-able drive. But I'm having trouble getting rid of the read only partition. The get info panel shows that I have only permission to read and there is no option there to change that.
Disk Utility will not allow me to erase, format or re-partition the drive (I can erase the read/write portion though). All the options to do anything to the drive are greyed out, presumably because I cannot write to it. Is there some way I can give myself permission to write to this drive? It is a perfectly good drive and it seems a shame to waste half of its space on stuff I will never use again. I am running OS X - 10.5.6 on an iMac G5 and the drive is formatted as: MS-DOS (FAT12). I have also tried to erase/reformat it in Vista, but cannot because of the write protection.
I changed permissions for HD to no access for everyone, the Mini hang up, I had to force shutdown, ever since it is stuck on the apple and rotating bars, MacMini with OS X 10.7.2! I booted in asfe mode still stuck, repair permissions using the backup hd "10.7.2 after pressing shift key" did no fix!

New folders created on a network are unable to be accessed by other users on the same network in Leopard OSX 10.5.6. The original user is the only one able to access the folder. You should be able to go to 'Get Info' on the folder and change sharing and permissions at the original user's mac, so that all users on the network are able to read and write to that folder. Leopard OSX doesn't not allow the change to be made. The selections are not ghosted out, but the appear available to be selected. No matter which you choose 'read & write', 'read only' the 'no access' option remains. We can go to a different mac on the network that has Tiger OSX and change the sharing and permissions of the folder in question. Why can't I easily do the same on the originating mac?

I try to change my entire home folder to: my user: read/write everyone: no access. and i apply to all enclosed items, with me as an owner, but still many folders have the permissions: system: read/write system: read/write everyone: no access how do i fix this? i can't go through all the folders manually and switch them all... how did this get screwed up? Why are there two 'system"? repair disk permissions comes up with nothing. Should i reinstall everything from scratch?

I cant drag music, or play directly from my nas with finder ( tried add library, no can do either) I get an error that I dont have permission to copy to my OSX disc.
I'm logged in as administrator.
It works great on my gf's 2010 mb.
So I tried different versions of itunes. including 9.1 and the current 10.
It works fine in boxee and vlc, so im kind of confussed.
Does Mac OS X Disk Utilities correct permission on all the files and folders on the machine? or is it only on systems folders? If I need to correct permission on every file and folder on the machine, how do I do so?
View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading to 10.5.7, numerous permission errors highlight regularly in Disc Utility, which I run weekly (probably for too often). I never saw these with 10.5.6, or for that matter any earlier incarnation of the OS. I have also noticed progammes hanging more than before (especially Mail). I have run DiskWarrior and that didn't report anything untoward. Should I give up worrying about this and maybe join the Foreign Legion instead?

In fact I'm getting a grey screen when I just try to restart. Have run Disk Utility (which always finds Permissions errors - even though it appears to make repairs. Also, after erasing my hard disk and recovering my user data from Time Capsule).When I restart I don't get beyond a grey screen (with moving cursor). I can't install the update as obviously I need to restart in order to start the install process.

I've download a Seagate Diagnostics programme to check whether my external Seagate FreeAgent Desk is working properly or not. However, when I run the programme, it indicates that cannot find the disk.
View -1 Replies View RelatedI have a Seagate 1 TB Backup Plus Drive which was working perfectly fine until I plugged it into a USB hub. It detected it while in the hub and I was able to get files off of it, but when I ejected it from the hub and put it back into the USB slot on the computer it was not detected by finder. It shows up in the disk utility and I clicked verify and repair and it says:
Verify and Repair volume “Seagate Backup Plus Drive”
Checking file system
Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
Is there any way to get this to work properly again? Or if not is there a way for me to recover my files on the external hard drive?

my MacBook Air wouldn't boot up. After booting from the Install DVD and running disk utility, it said that there was a problem with the internal hard disk drive and that it needed to be reformatted and OS X reinstalled. I am now trying to backup some of my files onto a 1TB external hard disk drive using single user mode.

I want to password lock/encrypt it yet be able to access it from both laptops as regular data would be.2. I want to create a backup of the 1 TB disk above, on to another 1 TB external disk and make it encrypted/password protected also. Maybe follow the partition structure maybe not, thats not paramount.What's the best way (apart from .dmg file) to achieve this given the data on disk in point 1 will change often as I create/edit more files.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research. I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!
Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'. And it needs to be reformatted. It's become a read only disk. When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question. I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969! These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.
I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure. Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state! Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive? And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.

Recently I purchased an external hard disk, to put all of my pictures of my baby due to space limitations on my internal laptop drive. Since my Canon camera 10 megapixel pictures take up a ton of space this was occurring at an alarming rate. My intention was also to back up to DVD but never got to it. This is both a comment and a question.
Now said baby, is getting really good at pulling cords etc. He managed to do this on the external drive firewire cable. As far as i know the drive was not in the process of actually writing. However, after a few minutes and trying to re-plug the drive the OS crashed with a Grey Screen of Death hardware error that tells you that you need to push the power button..
This apparently corrupted the drive's directory. Upon reboot the drive would not mount. Since there were time machine backups on the drive too Diskwarrior was not able to reconstruct the drive in the built in memory available on the computer. Time machine stores millions of files and Diskwarrior apparently wants to keep it all in memory at once. Since my computer has 2GB you would hope that would be enough but apparently not. So that failed. Other utilities seemed to be able to find the files but not restore the directory. I also took it to the apple store they were not able to recover it.
I have to say this is extremely distressing, and hard to believe that a simple accident like this could cost the loss of thousands of pictures. I did send it to a rescue company but that was expensive but I think apple needs to do something about this situation.
On Windows there is a way to disable the write cache for external drives. This is not available for Mac OS X. This would prevent this rather common occurrence of a plug accidentally becoming disengaged when the drive is not in the process of writing. This reduces the odds but I still think apple, in order to become clearly superior, needs a better solution.
I know Apple has experimented with ZFS would this not eliminate this possibility of this kind of disaster? Is this in Snow Leopard desktop? I know they are thinking this is a business customer focused technology but clearly if it can eliminate this kind of thing then I think it is extremely useful to their non server customers. Perhaps there are other ways of dealing with this issue but ZFS is designed to deal with these issues. HFS+ is extremely fragile to disk corruption.
I know my situation is not that uncommon and this is not the first time this has happened to me with an external drive. You would think I had learned. I hate to think of how many other people have had the same thing happen to them.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an external 500GB Freecom USB HDD with two Data partitions on it (FAT32 and NTFS). With a Windows tool, I made the two partitions smaller in order to free up some space (ca. 200GB) for an additional Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition. This partition I wanted to create with the Mac OSX 10.6.4 Disk Utility. When I pluged in my USB HDD in my new iMac it mounted the two partitions, NTFS and EXT32 and the Disk Utility tool also showed the free (unpartitioned, almost 200GB) space on the HDD. Then, I chose to create a new Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition and let the tool do it. ...which I probably shouldn't have done. Disk utility stopped and showed an error message saying that it cannot read the partitions anymore and that it needs to be closed. No partitions can be mounted anymore since then on this HDD. View 2 Replies View RelatedTonight i was working on a report in MS Office 08, and it was all fine and what not until one point i got some error message saying that the disk was full and i couldnt save it and to change the saving location. Anything this is on the main drive where i have ~40gb's left. So i put my USB Drive in to save it on that and it gave me the same error it wouldnt save on anything it just keep saying Disk Full.. Does anyone know what that is? Clearly its some sort of error/bug as i restarted the macbook and downloaded a picture and saved it on my desktop with no problems after the reboot. I'm thinking of getting a MBP 13'', together with an external display. That way I get the portability of a MBP 13'' while maintaining an in-house big external display and 400$ in my wallet, only losing a bit of processor power (which is found negligible by most users).
My question has to do with resolution. MBP 13'''s resolution is 1280 by 800, right? My question is: if I buy a display with higher resolution, will I be able to enjoy that resolution? Or no matter how big my external display's resolution is, will I always be stuck with 1280*800?
I use an external monitor from Dell with my Macbook Pro 13.3". For some reason I am not allowed to set this monitor at highest possible resolution? Or perhaps that's the best for this monitor which admittedly is quite old. But when I go into my system preferences it shows option for higher resolutions but doesn't allow me to select one.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have been having some problems with my Macbook Pro. I have a new BenQ screen connected to it via the Mini Display Port to VGA adapter from Apple. No matter what I do, I cant seem to be able to change the resolution to anything higher than 1280x1024, which is a pretty stupid resolution to have on a 27'' monitor. Sometimes when I plug it in, it gives me the option to change the resolution to 1920x1080.
But when I select it, the screen goes black and displays the message "No signal detected". Now, as it happens, I have a copy of windows installed on a partition of my hdd, and the screen works flawlessly on it. full HD with 75 Hertz. So that shows that it is not a hardware problem, it has to be a software problem. I tried everything, including reinstalling OS X, and deleting the "windowserver" files. no success.
