MacBook Pro :: Unresponsive When Opening Certain Files
Jun 5, 2014
I haven't had too many problems with my MBP. However, beggining yesterday I've had a very unresponsive computer. The problem only occcurs when I open certain types of apps. Google chrome (which i am using now) is perfectly fine, photobooth, even imovie is working fine and not making the computer unresponsive. However, when I try to open safari/software update/firefox/skype the computer always (100% of the time) will have a long stream of unresponsive time, followed by a small time frame where the computer catches up to any commands I pushed (force quit option), which is than followed by another stream of unresponsive time.
I've had the activity monitor out while I tried opening safari or software update and it will show an 8% usage. Nothing remarkably high. however the programs will be highlighted in red with the words unresponsive and it will occasionaly make the other programs (like google chrome or finder) unresponsive.
I know that iMovie is a very heavy taxload program for the MBP but if i can use that smoothly, I think it's safe to say my MBP is not too "slow".The only thing in common I see between the programs that provoke an unresponsive computers is that they use the internet (safari/software update/skype/itunes will log onto the store). Whats peculiar is that google chrome is working great.Does google chrome connect to the net in a different way?

Recently when trying to download/open a file from the internet - my machine prompted me as usual with the grey box that says: You have chosen to open, then says What should Firefox do with this file? Option: 1) open with (then select the program - i.e. word, internet ,etc) or to 2) save file or 3) do this automatically for files like this from now on. I need to figure out how to un-select the 3rd option.

I'm new to Macs, and I just downloaded Zipeg, which has worked for me when opening zip files. However, just seconds ago, I tried to open a program that I had just downloaded, but I don't know why it's not working. There's so many files that lead to so many more, but I just want to open the application. I extracted it all, but how do I open the program that is amongst many other files in Zipeg? Or maybe another file opener?

I'm quite an experienced thirteen year old, but I just can't figure out to do with an expanded .rar file. I've downloaded both 'The Unarchiver' and 'UnrarX'.
What do I do with it once I've expanded it?

Is there a simple way to change the function of the return key so that it opens files rather than renames them, or, another way to open files/programs without using a mouse?

Recently the preview program has stopped working. I cannot open PDF files or image files, i.e. jpeg. The only thing I can think of that I've done recently is installing a program called "MailRaider." I just uninstalled it using a program called "Appdelete."
I tried this suggestion from the apple discussion forum that did not work:
Go to the finder, find one of the PDFs you can not open. then click on that PDF one time. go to the file menu, chose get info from the file menu. the inspector window that pops up will include a section on open with. expand that section and click on the open with menu and chose preview. then click the "Change All.." button.
all PDF should now open with preview. you can repeat this process with jpegs, gifs, tifs, pngs, extra as needed.
What else can I try? Do I need to reinstall the preview application? If so, how do I do that?

You'd think this was all pretty basic. It probably is.
I'm trying to open/edit '/usr/local/php5/lib/php.ini' with TextWrangler through Terminal. The TextWrangler part isn't an absolute requirement. The directory exists and I'm assuming the file does as well. (No 404-esq errors during my fumblings and it was a standard installation of PHP5)
Also, is there any way to browse through the above directory using the Finder's GUI? That would be nice.

I just got my new MacbookPro. It is annoying that the Terminal is set as the default opener for those files without an extension name. For example, a file like "car" will be opened by the terminal when I double click it. The terminal will execute each line of the file as a command. Is there any way to set TextEdit.app as the default opener for any file that is not explicitly assigned to an application?

i'm the admin of a mac lab at my university. users use one specific user account - is there a way to prevent this user from opening .dmg files? people can run apps right from a mounted dmg and i've caught a couple of people trying to download torrents here. though they don't have permission to move an app into the applications folder, they can simply run it off the desktop.

I have hopefully a question one of you can help me with. On my MacBook when I open a file - for example a zip file that has pictures in it that I receive in an e-mail. Until recently I would clik on the zip file to open it and get a "Opening Attachments .zip" box which is normal. I would then have the option to open the file (default is Stuffit Expander") or "Save File." I always click "Save File" and until recently the file, whether it's a zip file, or just a single file, would open on my DESKTOP. Well I must have changed something because they no longer are opening on my desktop...and I'm not sure where they are opening up and being stored. So long intro to hopefully easy question. Since the Opening Attachments box doesn't have an option to where that "Save" option puts that file, where can I go to find out where it's saving these files to?

I digitised some old home videos and all worked very well, except that now some of them won't open on my iMac (OS X 10.5.4). The files are all .mov files and only one of them opens without any problems with Quicktime, with the rest i get a message saying "The movie could not be opened. This is not a movie file". At the Mac support counter I was told that I just need to download a codec and that should solve the problem - but I lost the piece of paper where he wrote down the name of the that codec and I can't remember what it was now... done tons of googling and nothing seems to match.

Excel is opening closed files from prior sessions when I log into my Mac Pro on Lion. I want excel to launch at log in, but I don't want it opening a lot of files that I have no interest in and since they are big, they take a lot of time to open. I haven't been able to find the setting that will eliminate this problem. Does anyone have any information about whether there is a setting or whether this is "a Feature"?
