MacBook Pro :: USB Port Gone After Ejecting External HDD?

Mar 9, 2012

All software uptodate. I have strange issue with USB ports. After ejecting USB drive (external HDD, powered by USB bus), which worked perfectly, USB port does not recognize anything, nor providing power. Turning MBP off and then booting back solves this issue.

MacBook Pro :: Ejecting An External Drive?

Apr 6, 2012

I have a Seagate 500gb GoFlex external drive, which I'm using with Time Machine to backup my MacBook Pro. Now, when ever I eject the drive (by right clicking or dragging to trash) it appears to disconnect from my MacBook, but the drive itself continues running, i.e., the lights stay on and I can still here the fans / drive whirring away. This continues unless I pull the USB cable out. Is this normal? Should the drive completely shutdown upon ejecting? Or is simply 'ejecting' from the MacBook enough for 'safe' removal?

MacBook :: WD External Drive Randomly Ejecting?

Apr 19, 2012

I've seen several discussions on external drives randomly ejecting, but didn't see any concise resolution. I have a Western Digital Passport, P/N WD320ME-01 2209A, using the OEM USB (2.0 I think) cable (~12 inches long). My ~4 year old mac book is running OSX 10.7.3. I use this drive for Time Machine B/U. Seemed to work ok (no ejects) when Leopard was the OS, but, after going to Snow Leopard, and now Lion, I get 'disk improperly ejected' errors when trying to run TM, or ever Repair under Disk Utilities. I did get one good TM back up, under Lion, after reformating the drive [extended (journaled)], but the next time I tried to run TM I started getting the 'improperly ejected' errors. Don't know if there is an issue with Lion (and earlier SL), or with WD drives. The fact that it originally worked leads

Hardware :: External HD Randomly Ejecting?

Apr 4, 2010

I have a 1 TB WD external hard drive I store my music and videos on. I have noticed that the hard drive will randomly eject itself causing me to have to turn the external hard drive off and back on for the iMac to mount it again. I have a new iMac i5 and had a 24" 2.4 GHz iMac previously. I was using the firewire port on my previous iMac before and would occasionally experience this problem. However, having to use the USB port on the new iMac it is occurring on a daily basis. I have tried different ports on the back of the iMac thinking it was a USB problem, but that didn't seem to help. I have run disk utility and it says the drive is in good health.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: External HDD Ejecting During TM Backup?

Mar 12, 2012

This is proving a bit a bit of a puzzle to me. I have a 1TB External LaCie hard drive connected directly to my iMac via USB. It has two partitions, both empty. I set the back-up going and it works for a while and then I get:"Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk may have been ejected or disconnected from your computer."

I've amended the Energy Saver settings in the system preferences to keep the machine on given the length of time the first update is going to take, but this doesn't seem to make any difference - and I'm not even touching it! I promise! Then the drive disappears from the disk utility. I then have to turn it off and then on again to get it back. I have the TM widget and this is what it has to say:

Starting standard backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine backup 70/Backups.backupdb
Ownership is disabled on the backup destination volume.  Enabling.
Backup content size: 196.7 GB excluded items size: 1.7 GB for volume Macintosh HD
233.92 GB required (including padding), 465.34 GB available

MacBook Pro :: Can't Use Front USB Port For External Hard Drive

Jun 1, 2012

I have had some problems for about the past year with the front USB port on my 2009 13in Macbook Pro 5.5.

As you know, there are 2 USB ports on the left side on a 13inch Macbook pro.  The one closest to me (the front one) works fine when I use it with a flash drive.  But when I connect my external 7200RPM external drive to it, after about a minute, it ejects then re-recognizes the disk.

I video edit with FCP and use the external as one of my scratch disks.

At first I thought maybe it was the cord or the drive that was messed up.  But then I connected my other external drive to this port and the same thing happened. But when I connected it to the back USB port, everything works fine. I haven't had any trouble.  So i make sure it's connected to that port when using the external.

MacBook Pro :: External USB Time Machine Works Only On One USB Port

Dec 11, 2014

I know it sounds strange, but my Time Machine HDD works only on one USB Port.

The facts:

I Have an encrypted Time Machine Backup on an External USB 2.0 HDD.

My MBP 13 inch 8,1 (Early 2011) runs the latest OS X Yosemite Version (10.10.1).

Any other external Drive (Flash drives or HDDs) do work on both USB Ports perfectly.

If i plug in my Time Machine HDD in the left port everything works fine.

If i plug in my Time Machine HDD in the right port it isn't even listed as an unmounted device in Disc Utility.

I connect the USB port directly from the HDD to my MBP (without USB hubs or anything else in between).

I am not sure but i believe that both USB Ports are internally connected to one USB Port, so i know its a strange issue i am having here.

MacBook Pro :: Make External Hard Drive Hook Up To Thunderbolt Port

Sep 2, 2014

So I have 2 USB Ports on my Mac. I use both of them and I am looking to get a Mic for recording youtube stuff. I use one for my wireless mouse, and I use the other for an external hard drive because the amout of space on my Mac is no-where near enough for what I am going to use up.

I am just wondering if there is a way I can either:

1. Get more USB ports (if its possible)

2. Hook up my mouse to a Thunderbolt port (again if that is possible)

or 3. Hook up my External Hard-Drive to the thunderbolt port.

MacBook Air :: Production - Handle Heavy Music Editing With Logic Pro - Lack Of External Port?

Mar 23, 2008

I do not own any Mac at home, but looking into one for college. I have read up on all the pros/ cons of the MBA (non-removable battery and RAM, lack of ports and optical drive, etc). I am not a computer gamer, so I stick to the consoles. I was wondering if a MBA is ideal for any kind of music production. Can it handle heavy music editing with GB or Logic Pro? Is it ideal with the somewhat "lack" of external ports? share your opinions and/ or experiences with music production for fun or work on a MBA. (By the way, I am asking this to decide whether I should be looking into a MBA or MBP for college September of 2009, so I have LOTS of time to wait for newer models).

Intel Mac :: External Speaker Port Not Working?

May 11, 2012

I have a pare of powered KRK Rokit speakers which I connect to my iMac via the headphone port. Never had a problem with this connection, but today the port doesn't seem to be working.

In normal circumstances, as soon as I plug the speaker cable in the port, the internal speaker of the Mac would disabled itself (even if the KRKs are not powered). However, now I plug the cable it and the internal Mac speaker keeps running. It seems as if the port does not recognise that there is an external source connected.

MacBook Pro :: Superdrive Keeps Ejecting Cd/dvds?

Sep 19, 2010

I own a macbook pro, mid 2009 and its superdrive was working fine till 3 days ago. Now, whenever I try to insert a CD or DVD, the drive doesn't read it at all and after 2'' it ejects it. I tried reseting SMC and PRAM with no luck. I also tried that "batmac" trick [hold the mac upside down] with no luck either except my neck is now damaged too..

So, two questions:

1)What could the damage be? It's not a lens thing since it doesn't even try to read the cddvd.

2)My warranty is no longer valid [expired 1 month ago..]. How much would it cost to replace it? I live in Greece and no Apple Store exists here yet. I must take it to my provider [authorized reseller], check it [don't know how much this is going to cost either] and have it replaced.
