MacBook Pro :: Migration Assistant Allow Selective Transfer?

Mar 24, 2010

I'm buying a new 13" MBP in the next couple days, and I'd like to transfer some applications and files from my current MBP but not the entire hard drive contents. I've got a lot of junk on my current laptop and would like to start with a semi-fresh machine. Does Migration Assistant allow you to pick/choose what you want to transfer onto the new machine? Alternatively, could I just drag/drop files from a TM or SuperDuper backup on an external drive (for instance, will MS Office work on the new machine after this process)?

MacBook Air :: Selective Re-installation Using Utilities Disc / Repair Or Mend Malfunctioning ICal?

Aug 1, 2008

I've been having problems with iCal and would like to reinstall it using Utilities Disc 1 with the Superdrive. However, there only appears to be an option to reinstall ALL the bundled software, at which point I've aborted the reinstallation process. Sledgehammer to crack a nut! It's only iCal I'm having trouble with (e.g searches not clearing down, "today" button greys out.) If it's not possible to reinstall just iCal from disc, does anyone know a way to "repair or mend" a malfunctioning iCal?

OS X :: Possible To Migrate Selective Stuff From Old HD?

Apr 11, 2010

I recently purchased a new HD for my Macbook and installed it, along with a clean install of the OS. I put my old HD into an external enclosure and can connect it via USB. Is it possible to selectively migrate certain information from my old HD to the new? Let me be more specific here, I only want to migrate my Safari, Firefox, Mail, Stickies, iCal, iTunes, Adium, and MS Office settings, that's it, nothing else. Is this possible via Migration assistant? Do I have to use a 3rd party app? Is it possible at all?

OS X :: Selective Restore From Time Machine?

Feb 10, 2009

My MBP is being repaired and a new HDD is being put in. Is there any way to do a restore from Time Machine that I could only select what I wanted to restore? I'm assuming the computer will come with a fresh install of Leopard and I guess my question is: Can I migrate docs/media/software from my time machine backup or is it an all or nothing restore?

OS X :: New MBP And Time Machine Selective Restore

Sep 21, 2009

So, got a new MBP coming in the mail, my old one trashed out. (I put 2 I/O boards, 2 inverters and replaced RAM twice, gave up on the lemonade). Is there a way I can restore from my old hard drive and/or the time machine disk ONLY my Itunes and Iphoto library? If I can preserve all the albums/playlists and then start from scratch everywhere else that would be awesome. I tried to talk to a genius at the retail store but they seem to be pre-programmed for only a few thousand generic answers. (now)-3.06ghz 8gb 500gb 15.4". I tried searching, but it seemed everyone had a different selective restore for hard drive problems, not a new machine transfer.

OS X :: Any Application To Backup Selective Folder

Oct 12, 2009

What's the best application to selectively back up folders? Both Super Duper and Carbon Copy Cloner erase the continents of the external hard drive before backup, so those won't work for me. I'm not really looking to make a bootable clone of my hard drive anyway. I'd just like to back up some folders and avoid the hassle of drag-and-drop. Shareware is fine if it's reasonably priced.

OS X :: Selective Time Machine Backup Via TC

I wanna backup my imac using time machine with my time capsule. I have a big (100 GB) encrypted dmg which is backupped as a whole everytime a little file in it is changed. So it doesn't backup just the differences it attempts to backup the whole dmg. Can I change in the preferences that time capsule only backups the rest of my computer and leave the dmg alone?

OS X Mavericks :: Selective Routing Causing (out Of Memory)

Jun 30, 2014

I've got two interfaces, in this order:

1. Wi-Fi connection to Apple time capsule that links to the internet - 10.0.1.9

2. LAN connection to ISP that links to the internet -  10.0.2.250

This works perfectly well, however, I would like to rout traffic through the second link, not just have it as a fail-over.

So, I use the route command, like this: route -n add -host 197.242.144.171 10.0.2.250route -n add -host 197.242.144.175 10.0.2.250route -n add -host 173.194.41.182 10.0.2.250

This doesn't give any errors and a netstat -nr shows

197.242.144.171    10.0.2.250         UGHS            0        1     en0197.242.144.175    10.0.2.250         UGHS            0        0     en0173.194.41.182     10.0.2.250         UGHS            0       12     en0

If, though, I try trace route, this is what I get: traceroute 197.242.144.175traceroute to 197.242.144.175 (197.242.144.175), 64 hops max, 52 byte packetstraceroute: sendto: Cannot allocate memory1 traceroute: wrote 197.242.144.175 52 chars, ret=-1

It looks as if, somehow, the route command is corrupting the normal routin

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Restore Selective Intonation Vs Full Installation Compromised System

Mar 15, 2012

I have reviewed notes regarding selective app restore method and am aware that there are issues assossiated with failed apps since the original app installer installs files in various libraries and system settings..My backed up Mac contains rogue programs such as the programming app python 3 and various rogue bugs and system settings

1 Does a full restore reset all backed up system settings or does it keep the fresh installation and include all your apps and settings such as mail accounts mail folders documents pictures movies podcasts etc without the bugs

2 Should the answer to 1 be a yes all compromised settings will be restored, then will I have issues with installing VMware fusion as its an encripted integrated app that I keep all my master business applications but store documents in the Mac documents area

Other factors

1 My accounting tax business has been hacked over and over again for the last 7 months from start of tax season

2 I have lost 50% of my clients due to the interruptions and been hospitalized twice from sitting on the computer for extended hours and days reinstalling fresh system and restoring Mac documents only, 3 times over, as well as trying to learn everything about best practice, hacks etc

3 I'm using fire vault 2 however the time machine backup is not encripted are there any potential problems with either of the two methods?

4 I will be using a proxy server when I next build the Mac will this be enough to mitigate potential security breach using the full time machine restore method?

5 I have many apps that I have not purchased through the app center and have not kept the keys and will be a headache to get all my details

6 what implications are there as far as the prior keychain access is consurned? How does that get restored?

What is the most effective and efficient method to restore from time machine given above scenario?

OS X :: How To Reinstall OS On MacBook

Sep 9, 2010

I would like to make a fresh and clean install of Snow Leopard. I have a MacBook Pro Late 2008 and it came with 10.6. I did upgrade to 10.6 last year when it came out but now I would like to wipe everything off it, format it and reinstall 10.6 so it looks brand new. How do I do that? Do I need to install 10.5 first and then 10.6 or can I directly install 10.6? And what application do I need to load?

MacBook Pro :: MBP Reinstall OSX ?

Jun 14, 2010

I am planing on selling my MBP. I needed to erase everything and reinstall OS X. I reformatted the drive, everything went ok. It started to install 10.5 but part way through the install, it froze at a time. I let it sit for about an hour. No change. Trying to click any of the menu icons at the top resulted in beach balling. I then, after reading advice, hard shut off the machine and rebooted to retry the install. Now, I just get a folder with a question mark and, when pressing "c" to have it boot from disk, it reads it, then ejects it. I need help to fix the problem. This is on a Macbook Pro Late 2007 edition.

MacBook Pro :: How To Reinstall The SMC

Feb 22, 2012

my MBP (early 2008) seems to have a corrupted SMC.Operations that i think are managed by the SMC like booting and sleeping are having big issues:  First, to boot OSX needs about 10 minutes. After presing the power-buton the chime sounds and the apple logo appears. OSX starts loading.

Then it suddenly stops and a blue screen appears. This blue screen stays there for several minutes. Then i can hear a little sound from the hard disc   and the desktop appears as always and i can use OSX without any problems.  Second, to get the MBP to sleep isnt working at all. Closing the MBP leads to a black screen, while the fans etc are still working. There is no way to wake it up again, so i have to do a force shut down.

I already formated the hard disc and reinstalled OSX 10.6 twice, but the problem still occurs. And I already tried to reset the SMC (pressing 5sec power button etc) and tried to clean the PRAM. I have no clue if the resets were actually done. I didnt have to enter passwords etc again like i was expecting to do after a PRAM-Reset. Is there a way to reinstall the SMC? I tried to but i got the message "Firmware is already up to date. No update necessary."

MacBook Pro :: Unable To Reinstall OS-X?

Jun 25, 2009

I haven't been able to reinstall OS-X on it at all. It takes 45 minutes from the time I say install to the time it gets only 1/10 of the bar across of the installing part and then fails.

I am able to format the HD, and partition it. This HD came out of another laptop of mine that I sold and was working fine. When I first tried this and did a time keeper restore, the laptop kept freezing and it took 5 hours for it to restore. Now I can't get OS-X installed. So I am a bit confused what is going on here.

Anyone have any ideas?

MacBook Pro :: Reinstall OSX That Preserves Everything?

Aug 3, 2010

I have had my first MacBook now for about a year. Its beginning to slow down quite a bit, which is expected I guess. I have been looking around for ways to speed things up, but I do not know what they mean, how they work, how to do it. I have a MacBook Pro 13in, 2.53 C2D, 4 GB ram, 500 GB hard drive, running 10.6.4. I also have a bootcamp of Win7 64 bit Ultimate but I am not having any problems with that.

Apparently there is a way to reinstall the OSX that preserves everything, but a clean install of the operating system. I bought this before Snow Leopard, so do I insert the Snow Leopard disc to do it? I tried restarting and booting from the disc but I must have missed something because it just booted normal.

Trying to reinstall OS after the machine wouldn't work when I tried OS upgrade.  I formatted Macintish HD.  It looks like it downloads successfully but never restarts afterwards.  No matter what I try it just boots into OS X Utilities.  When I go into DIsk Utility it lists 160.04 GB Toshiba, then under that Macintosh HD.  Then further down it lists disk1 and under that it lists OS X Base System.
