I think I have a slight issue with my 7200rpm 500gb seagate drive. Once or twice every hour it seems to stop and start up again. Kinda klicks. It causes my computer to freeze for about 3 seconds. Whats causing it? Is it faulty? I should also mention that it didn't do this when i first got it. This is the model without the SMS.

Mac Pro :: Seagate Momentus XT VS SSD - Storage Space Of A HDD?

Jul 21, 2010

I have already produced one thread on how to install an SSD into a 2008 mac pro found here - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=962856I have a 2008 mac pro 2.8 octo and feeling my drives bottleneck the system i want a new solution to give it a new lease of life.Being ready to bite the bullet and buy myself an Intel M 160gb, I started reading about the Seagate Momentus XT. A hybrid drive which contains a 500GB 7200rpm 2.5" drive coupled with 4gbs NAND solid state memory (ssd) so launches all your programs OS etc lightening fast, comparable to an SSD, but provides the storage space of a HDD. So is a good compromise between the two. It also provides an Adaptive Memory Technology which intelligently monitors frequently used applications and places them into the solid state portion of the drive so they can be quickly recalled.

MacBook Pro :: How To Make PC Backup And Storage On External Hdd

Nov 15, 2010

Is it possible? I am seeking a solution for my household computing needs. We have a laptop (Mac) and a desktop (Dell). I would like to have one external drive to backup both the laptop and PC and also for storage for both. Is this possible? Would it be a four way partition? The only thing I would ever see a need to cross between partitions would be music from our individual itunes libraries.

OS X Mavericks :: Seagate Backup Plus For Mac?

Aug 27, 2014

I'm having an issue with my Seagate backup plus for mac.  It is an external hard drive and when I tried to find a place to post this on Seagate, I could not find one.  I've had the same issue in the past, but I'm now wondering if it's my computer causing the issue.

I have OS Mavericks, OS X 10.9.4.

So, I connect the external hard drive and everything seems okay for a few minutes, but then the hard drive is ejected unexpectedly and the message comes up "Disk Not Ejected Properly" and will do this every time I plug it in now.  I'm also not able to access any of the files on it - when I click to open the hard drive on my desktop, it freezes up in finder until the disk is ejected improperly once more.

I had an issue last summer with the same hard drive where it was not mounted correctly.  After a painfully long time with Seagate customer service, it was determined that I needed to update the firmware on the disk.  After doing this, the hard drive worked great until now.  Thinking it might be a similar issue, I double checked the firmware update available from Seagate and according to them, my hard drive is up to date.  Before I did that, I checked Disk Utility once again and the disk image still appears to be mounted, so I don't believe it's necessarily the same issue.

Below I copied and pasted an excerpt from the log available through disk utility.  The last two lines (which I made red) are where the disk becomes ejected from the computer.

MacBook Pro :: External Storage And Backup - Get Expresscard / Enclosure?

Aug 15, 2010

I just bought a MBP 2010 with the i7, and I'm trying to figure out what to do for external storage and backup since this is my first Mac ever. I have an Icy Dock with a 1TB harddrive in it, but it only has eSATA and USB ports. USB would not be preferable for trying to back up stuff. I was reading these forums about eSATA ExpressCards, but they seem really suspect (kernel panics sound terrifying) and a lot of work to get going. I was thinking about just getting another enclosure with FireWire 800, but can't seem to find any advice on good ones. I was wondering if I should just get a new external harddrive. I would like to get out of this without having to buy too much new stuff. Can somebody give a recommendation regarding whether I should get an expresscard, new enclosure, or new external?

MacBook Pro :: Seagate Momentus XT Options - Installed The Drive

Sep 5, 2010

I finally got my 500gb seagate Momentus XT I've been drooling over only to find out it's a complete nightmare. Upon searching through forums I have yet to find conclusive or consistent problems, I read about some I had but I had many others. I installed the drive in my macbook pro with the hopes of getting it to run faster, which it did but only in certain instances. The pros were fast boot times, applications start fast but many problems persisted. Please follow up if you've had any of these problems. 1) Clean installation of Snow Leopard got stuck at the 10 minute mark 2 times. Each install attempt took much much longer then it has in the past.

MacBook Pro :: Getting A Seagate Hard Drive Recognized Over WIFI

But for the Mac, it only works when directly connected and is not recognised over WIFI - the drive is not listed under devices.  It did when I first started the drive yesterday, when I managed to copy all my files onto the external drive via WIFI.  But not today.  Perhaps related to the software update I ran last night?

MacBook Pro :: Multiple Drive Failures Using Seagate Momentus XT 750?

May 10, 2012

I have a 2011 macbook pro (8,1) and in january 2012 I replaced the OEM drive with a momentus XT.  I can report that the drive makes a BIG difference in performance. However, the drive failed with bad sectors within a week of installation. I got a warranty replacement, and that drive also failed within a couple weeks.

I got a second warranty replacement, and that drive failed after about a month.

I am currently awaiting my third warranty replacement drive!

All of the failures were the same mode - bad blocks after a fairly short period of use.

I used SMART Utility to detect the problem - typically the disk itself did not flag a SMART error (so does not show up in Disk Utility) but my utility detected the problem and the SMART self tests fail.  In all cases these drives were eligible for replacement via SeaTools test.  These drives also caused IO errors which showed up in the system log, and the evil pinwheel cursor of impending doom.

So my question to the community is: if anyone out there is using these drives, have you had these problems?

If you have one of these drives I recommend using SMART Utility or other SMART monitoring software to check your drive.

I know seagate is not known for reliability these days, but three drive failures in a row is a little ridiculous!  ... so I'm concerned that there is some bad interaction with the mac.  The only other thing I can think of is bad yields related to the thailand floods - all of these drives were dated around Oct 2011.

I've searched around a bit but I haven't seen anyone reporting problems.

OS X :: Partitioning With Disk Utility For Storage And Backup

Jun 25, 2009

Here's my setup:
One, dual bay enclosure (1.5TB x2):
OWC Mercury Elite - AL Pro Dual Bay Enclosure
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Othe...ng/MEFW934AL2/
and one, two pack of 1.5TB Seagate HD
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...550055-683153-
Total: paid $310 including shipping for the 3.0TB external setup.

I'm going to use FW400(since my MB pro has no 800 port) and partition this into two 1.5TB partitions. one for storage, and one for time machine backup. My question is if I choose 2 partitions in disk utility, will it automatically know to use one of the 1.5TB Seagate HD for one partition and the other 1.5TB seagate for the 2nd partition? Or will it use half of one and half the other? I would like one partition to be one seagate 1.5TB HD, and the 2nd partition to be the other, that way if one fails I have a backup (using Time Machine with one partition to backup the other 1.5TB drive).

Hardware :: Time Capsule Setup (Using For Storage And Backup)

Jan 18, 2009

I got the iMac Wednesday and have been setting it up all week/weekend. I finally down to the end of getting time capsule setup. Here's what I'd like to have:
Internal iMac HD: 500gb
time capsule HD: 1tb (750gb backup, 250gb usable space)

Right now I've got it set up and I'm about to pick the drive in time machine, but it looks like as soon as I do that it's going to just start backing up my internal HD to the time capsule's HD? Will I later be able to set aside 250gb of time capsule space to use as storage? Do I need to set up something before I backup to it? Is this even possible, or is this what everyone is talking about when they say time capsule can't be used as a NAS?

Intel Mac :: Storage For Time Machine Backup Cannot Be Found

Mar 22, 2012

Late last night I accidentally ejected Time Machine from the Devices section of the Finder window. I've now spent half a day trying to get the computer to recognise my external hard drive again as attempting to use Time Machine results in the message "Storage Machine for Time Machine backup can't be found."I can find my WD desktop 1TB drive with Disk Utility but not in Finder. If I click on the WD Ext HDD 1021 Media in Disk Utility there is the option to Verify in the top menu, but nothing happens when I click on it. All the options verify, and repair are greyed out. I've checked the computer hard drive and done the verify and repair disk and permissions process.

I've turned off the computer, disconnected the external hard drive, turned off time machine, then turned everything back on but still can't get the external hard drive to be recognized. This is extremely frustrating and I have run out of ideas. I know it all started when I clicked on the eject button for the external hard drive in the devices section of the finder. Such a simple mistake, but I have searched everywhere online and can't find a resolution that I can actually try. I can't verify and repair the WD hard drive if these options aren't available in Disk Utility.

OS X :: Storage Drive Will Not Eject From MacBook?

Jun 19, 2009

I have a MacBook with a storage drive connected via firewire. All was fine but now suddenly it won't show the contents of the folders and it won't eject. I tried dragging it to the trash, and I also tried the eject arrow in the list of drives. I tried to open Disk Utility, but it just spins. I also tried to throw something else away in the trash, and the trash folder will not take it.

Normally if something like this happened, I would just restart and hope it rights itself, but I don't know if I can do that with a storage drive still attached. (On another occasion, the storage drive got pulled out improperly and luckily I was able to repair it with Disk Utility.)
