MacBook Pro :: Screen Dims When Volume Is Increased
Jun 28, 2014
My f1 - f12 keys have seemed to adopt a new function. When i use f12 to increase the volume it will also act like i am pressing f1 and simultaneously dim my screen. When i press f1 to dim my brightness it will also increase my volume. When i press f2 to increase my brightness it will also "press" the tilde key and vise versa. These are only a few examples and it seems that all my f1-f12 buttons have adopted a secondary function.Â

Has anyone noticed a very slight flicker on their new MBPs? I have a new 13" and, every so often, the screen brightness dims and then brightens very quickly (happens in less than a second). The option for auto-adjusting the screen brightness is off so it's not that particular function. It's most noticeable on all-white backgrounds both on AC and battery power. Hard drive access doesn't seem to coincide with the dimming.

I recently had to erase and install Leopard. I then restored everything from my time-machine backup. The weird thing is, before, when watching streaming videos from the internet, the screen stayed at the same brightness, regardless of whether there was any mouse movement, or touching the keyboard, or anything. Now, if I don't do anything, the computer dims the screen, as if i wasn't watching a video.

I usually have my Air at full brightness. I notice after a while if I leave it alone the screen dims a bit. If I move the mouse it is slightly dimmer and I have to manually adjust the display back to full brightness. Is there a setting turn this off? I have automatically reduce brightness of display before sleep turned off for both the battery and power adapter setting.

My new macbook aluminum's screen has a tendency to gradually dim and then brighten on it's own, randomly. This is off the battery power and not AC adapter. Anyone else's macbook screen do this? This is not the screen dimming to sleep. it is constantly dimming and brightening, even as I type this post.

I've just purchased a new macbook air 11.6 in and when watching movies (not in ful screen) the screen dims, Im assuming because of inactivity with keyboard, etc. I don't like to watch all movies in full screen, so how do I change the settings to allow for longer 'inactive' times? Meaning, I don't want the screen to dim after only 5 minutes.

My screen dims after no use for about a minute. I have it set to do that after 15 minutes. I minute is too annoying (like if watching a video or something with no user input). Anyway, how do I make it stop doing this. It does not seem to want to go with the 15 minute setting I put in for screensaver.

Why is this? Can I stop it from happening? I just put the brightness all the way, plug the MagSafe back in, unplug it and it is back to being dim?

I just picked up a new MBP and loving it so far. Not sure if anyone else experiances this so I thought I would ask. When I have walked away from my Mac for a few minutes the screen dims down and has a faint beeping noise. When I touch a key or trackpad it is restored to full colour and the noise stops. Any ideas what or why this is?

I bought iMac 27" from local apple store two days ago. Everything is fine execpt that there is some weird sound coming from the computer when the screen turns darker to save energy. Once I move my mouse to activate the screen, the sound goes away. I am saying the sound is so load, but it is still noticable and a little annoying in a quite room.
Update: I search "screem+humming+dim" and turn out actually a lot of iMac owners have this problem. Is it a technical issue Apple fails to resolve in general?

After updating to iTunes 10.1.1 the app did not start at first so I went to download it and installed it manually. iTunes works but my boot time went from ~2 wheel turns at the boot screen to ~16. Installed the new airport update, as well. I repaired the permissions and did a PRAM reset.

I installed (and subsequently uninstalled) two different fan control programs... Since then, my fan speed has increased somewhat dramatically. Instead of the normal 2000 rpm (approx), it now runs at 3500 to 4500 rpm with CPU temps between 55 & 65 deg. C. I'm wondering if one of the programs modified some fan setting and how I can restore the factory defaults. I'm on a Macbook Pro OSX 10.6.8 *additional note: I only have one fan running (left fan), which is why I downloaded the fan control programs in the first place... but the left fan was running at around 2000 rpm even though it was the only fan (until I installed those programs)

Ever since I upgraded my Macbook Pro (mid 2009) dual core from Snow Leopard to Lion, the start up time has increased significantly, and the battery life seems to be lower than it has ever been. It has been several months since I upgraded so indexing is not an issue. What should I do, and how can I get back my missing battery life that Lion took away? And how can I make my reboot and startup time faster.

Normally when I shut power off my MacBook Pro, it takes about 4-5 seconds and then its off. Since I installed VMware Fusion yesterday, it takes about 1 minute to power off. What is going on? I read somewhere that when you quit a virtual machine you need to choose "kill all" to stop any background processes. How do I do this or is this just normal.

So the latest beta is apparently 64-bit to begin with. I've also noticed that it uses more RAM than the previous (beta) versions, which is quite disappointing. It now uses up even more RAM than Safari!! Has anyone else noticed that?
I also don't like the the new "page loading" status because it doesn't tell much - seems like a copy of Chrome's too. I preferred how it was in the previous beta version.

I recently bought a 12" Powerbook G4 from ebay, and am curious to know about the battery capacity. It came with the original Apple battery, and it usually powers off before the battery is at a low percentage power. So I have installed Coconut Battery and Battery Health Monitor to check how the battery is doing.
Both say that the battery capacity is now 6393mAh, and the original capacity was 4200mAh. As such, they say the battery health is 100%. How is this possible? How can battery capacity increase? I presume this is wrong. Is there any way to correct this? The powerbook, according to the apps, is 65 months old (it is an original 867MHz model). Both battery apps also say the battery has gone through 59 charge cycles.

I just got a new 21.5 inch imac a few days ago and I used migration assistant to move everything from my macbook. It displays .avi files that are really 350 mb as 366 mb. Why is this happening ? and even when I download new ones that are 350 mb they show up as 366 mb. Before I used the migration assistant I used this plug in for quicktime called Perian on it when it was brand new, but I think its erased now cuz I transferred all my data.

After a catastrophic HD crash I bought a small 250GB external hard-drive an started to use Time machine. Since my Mac was freshly formatted, I tend to keep it tidy and clean and keep good track of what comes in. I noticed my time machine backing up 15 GB of data which allegedly would have been added within two days. I could absolutely not trace this on my computer nor when I compared current folder contents with the most recent backup. Downloads, Apps., System are all excluded from my time-machine and couldn't represent such a dramatic data increase on my separate HD.

I have SL installed since the release day and I've noticed that for some reason my hard drive is a lot more active than it was before. At first I thought it was indexing something (such as the spotlight index that needs to be built) but this has been going on for days now. Even during very light computer work (just one firefox window with macrumors) de disk still keeps going like crazy. It's not constantly, but definitely way more frequent than on leopard.

I recently upgraded my Macbook Pro to Snow leopard. About 4 days later, my Mac crashed. When I tried to restart, it came up with the grey screen with apple logo and spinning disc. I have tried all of the resets. I then decided to try and re-boot from the SL install disk. When it asked me to choose a destination volume, however, there was none available. I tried disk utility, but there was no disk available there either. I then went back and tried to use the original install disc that came with the Mac...same results. It appears that my internal hard disk has disappeared. I wonder if i am going to have to replace the hard drive?

I have a Mac Pro and not too long ago I swapped from a fat, heavy and filthy white Apple Keyboard to a new skinny silver one. I like it, and also love that the F7-9 Skip Back-Pause/Play-Skip Forward keys work for iTunes, even when another app is active (what's the word I'm looking for - in focus or whatever). But I use Optical output, so the volume keys (F10-12) don't do anything. I know that, when iTunes is the active app, I can command-+/- to change the volume, but I'd love to be able to map the F10-12 keys to do that - without having to have iTunes active (playing, but not the active window).
