I just got my second hard drive installed in my optical bay, how I relocate all my "scratch" to the second hard drive while keeping it linked to the applications on the primary SSD. Particularly, I want to move my itunes library and my iphoto library, and anything else I can while maintaining native functionality.
View 2 RepliesI just got myself a Mac Mini and a 2 TB Western Digital My Book Studio II External Hard Drive. I just wanted to run this idea by you guys to give me some expert advice. What I did was I made the 2 TB Western Digital into a 1 TB External Hard Drive with RAID 1. Then I went to System Preferences/Accounts and changed the location of the Users folder to the External Hard Drive.
So, essentially, (I think....) the entire OS is running on the Mac Mini, and then whatever data, Movies, Music, Preferences, additional Accounts etc..... I run from my External via Firewire 800. What do you all think about this set up? I have no idea why and how I came up with that, but that was how my Windows computer was set up (Recent Mac convert!)
I just purchased a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 640GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive to replace my stock 120GB HD. I am really excited to have the extra space. I purchased this MBP a few months ago and would like to do a fresh install of Leopard. I have an external hard drive that I have not used yet and was wondering of the best way to install Leopard on the hard drive and then add my itunes library and iphoto library to the fresh 640gb hard drive. What kind of score do you imagine I will have once I upgrade the hard drive and bump the Ram to 4GB.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have recently bought a new MacBook. I initially thought it would be better to run iPhoto from the external hard drive, but after moving some things around I now want to run it straight from the MacBoook hard drive.
I tried copying the library from the external hard drive to the MacBook but I keep getting the following message....
"You can�t copy �iPhoto Library� because it has the same name as another item on the destination volume, and that volume doesn�t distinguish between upper- and lowercase letters in filenames."
If you want to do modify or upgrade a Macbook you Should first back up your music, documents, photos etc to an external hard drive. That much I did know. And lucky for me because a few later I spilt wine on the keyboard. (Computers are not wine oriented). Lucky for me it was saved by a Mac expert. The iTunes library which also includes non-Apple purchases is sitting in an external LaCie 1tb Rugged external hard drive. And what I want to do is transfer/import the iTune library Back into the Macbook. Sure it probably sounds easy to a vetran computer person or even to someone who grew up with computers but to me it's like speaking Cantonese.

Luckily, this is not my primary Aperture library, but another one that I started a few weeks ago as I thought my first was getting a bit large. I am unable to open Aperture at all, nor can I copy to or from the drive. Because the drive is (I believe) bad, I can't repair the library, plus, as I mentioned, I can't open Aperture anyways. I can pull the drive, but then how do I get Aperture to redirect itself so that it opens my original library, instead of trying to open this new one? Pulled the suspicious drive from my Mac Pro. On restarting, Aperture asked which Library I wanted, adding that one was no longer available. So, I'm back on the original library and things look to be running fine. Unfortunately, I hadn't vaulted yet, so the last month is probably gone. Luckily, I think I already exported the few keepers I had during that time.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWell, a little about me, I'm a proficient computer user, however, in my semi-recent switch to Mac, I am going through the learning curve of the ins and outs of Mac OS X. I'm a video and audio editor and do a lot of graphic design work as well. So, I have a 320GB (~300GB usable) drive with Mac OS 10.5.8 and a whole lot of software installed. This is a production machine, so I don't want to do anything experimental with it. Hopefully someone with expertise in the area of cleaning cache and needless files will drop by this thread.
Here's the basic rundown of what's on the drive:
/Library = 62GB
/Apps = 22GB
/Users.../Library = 87GB
/Users.../Docs&Desktop&Music&Movies&Pictures = 90GB
Other = ~20GB
Free space = ~20GB
I have plenty of external drive space, so I can move a lot of the User stuff off and clear it up for now, but I just can't understand why the Libraries are so big. But this is because I don't know that much about Mac OS X. Are there any no brainer places to clean cache and unnecessary files? I have read around a bit and so I am not going to be poking around in the Libraries unless I know what I'm doing. I'm cautious because like I said, this is a production machine.
My ITunes library is almost 400 GB, I have it on a Mac Mini Server with 2 500 GB hard drives. How do i store some of it on the second drive? Or run my iTunes on the second drive?

my itunes library is on an external hard-drive. I have another external harddrive that is portable and I'd like to have this one to travel with and be able to update it from the main library on the other ext. hd. Right now I have just copied over the entire library of music - no itunes involved - but I realized that this doesn't work for me as I want to be able to update that music file with the newer stuff found on my other main ext. hd.

I installed a 128MG SSD, which is too small for storing my iTunes library. My iTunes library is on a second hard drive (my Mac Pro has four internal hard drives). I went to iTunes Preferences. Under Advanced Preferences "iTunes Media folder location" I selected my second hard drive and found my iTunes folder. But iTunes continues to show only the (few) songs on my SSD, without the (many) songs or playlists from my second hard drive. How do I get iTunes to shows the songs and playlists from the iTunes folder on my second hard drive?

However, I've never done iTunes through an external hard drive before and I have some questions. Can I copy new discs (import) straight onto the external hard drive? After weeks of issues since migrating my entire iTunes library to a NAS (WD MyCloud) from a PC I think I'm going to move it to the harddrive of my new iMac.
My questions are:
1) iTunes keeps showing that there are around 150 songs it can't locate (displays the exclamation mark next to the songs) which I then have to find manually - do I need to find all songs first before moving the library?
2) The total size will eventually be around 550GB once all further CD's are ripped - will this considerably slow down my iMac which is 1TB? (so far I have only used 79GB of it)
3) One of the reasons I want to move the library is that the NAS somehow more than duplicated most of the files so now my itunes shows I have 264GB of music but the NAS is showing 540GB - iff I migrate the iTunes library, I'm assuming it will only move the 264GB that it links to and not all the duplicates - is this correct?

I want to get a mac but one thing that concerns me is my itunes. I have a massive library and if I get a mac I will need to copy the library to my external hard drive from my pc then copy it again to the mac. How could I do this without losing my playlists, rating etc? And also if you have all your photos in iPhoto can you access them without opening iPhoto? If you can how? Because I have played around on Macs in the Apple Store and couldn't see where they would be!

Every time I try to trash my old itunes file and access the removable HD, I cant find it from iTunes. the only thing I can get it to do is to reload (duplicate) the entire 30gb library on the HD I want it off of. Now I have 2 duplicate versions of my library, but still can't get it to keep the files on the HD.

Initially, I had the files on my internal, but copied the iTunes folder (like Apple's web site told me to do), and went into preferences and pointed the library to my external. After that, I deleted the files from my internal, and voila, everything was working perfectly.
However, I turned my computer off, and the next day plugged my external in, and opened iTunes, but there was no library, just the iTunes intro screen.
Just wondering what the best way is to save all my photos, events, tags, modified and originals etc. to an external hard drive and then reload it to another iPhoto exactly the way it was.
Also same for iTunes if possible. How to save ratings, playlists, play count etc.
Can I backup my Itunes library to a network hard drive?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have looked at a ton of posts on this site and others and find similar problems but cant figure out what is wrong. If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great. I have an Imac 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo 3 gigs of ram. I have an Iphoto library that is 190gigs . I have been trying to transfer the library to an external 1 tb hard drive so I can get my computer to run normal again. When I try and transfer the Iphoto library to the external I get a really lame error code. The transfer will start perfect it will get to about 142 gigs complete then the message :"the finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "iphoto library" could not be read or written. (error code -36). I have looked up the error code and it seems to be one of those codes that doesn't really tell you anything. At first I thought it was a problem with the external, maybe it was not formatted correctly. Then I tried with an alternate drive I had and the same thing. Just to make sure I took back the original drive. Re formatted the drive only one partition, and mac os extended journaled using GUID partition as suggested by many posts. So I don't believe it is the drive at all I can transfer other files no problem. I have not tried to transfer something as large, but everything else, photos, movies, ect seem to be no problem at all. I really do think now there is something wrong with the library but I don't know what to do. I would love to try and make a copy on the computer itself, but there is not enough room. I think I may need to rebuild the Iphoto library but do not want to lose everything.

It booted fine until I copied an iphoto library from a friend's Mac and now this disk won't boot. I get the circle with the slash through it and the folder with the question mark on it. I ran it through disk utility and it was verified with no problems.

Unfortunately, the iTunes application cannot now locate my iTunes library. I create a lot of slideshows on Aperture and use music from iTunes on the audio tracks. The titles on the audio tracks are now inaudible and are preceded by a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark inside.

Recently, despite careful file management my internal hard drive has reached its capacity so I purchased a 2TB WD My Book to move many of my files to to make room. After reformatting it (Mac OS Extended Journaling) starting copying stuff over but I struck a problem when I tried copying my iphoto library file over. Its about 47gig and every time i try it begins to copy but then it suddenly stops around 600mb saying it cant read or write something in the file.Is the file too big? Do I need to format the drive it differently? Hopefully not as I've already moved a heap of files over.

I am trying to copy my aperture 3 library (126GB) to an external hard drive to free up space on my local hard drive.
When it is at the final 1gb of the process I recieve an error message:
"The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Aperture 3 Library” can’t be read or written.

I have repaired the aperture library and repaired permissions and this did not work.

I have more media than internal hd space and I want to extend my iTunes library with my external hd. I have a Macbook Pro so I want a good chunk of my library on my internal drive so I can take it with me. When I am set up at home, however, I want to be able to extend my iTunes library with an external drive, particularly so I can access all of my media from my apple tv.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently moved my music library to an external library by changing the pathway in Edit/Preferences/Advanced and then consolidating the library. Everything worked for a while but now when I open itunes it is not able to find all the files. Bizarrely for a lot of albums it can find one or two of the songs but the rest all get the "Unable to locate original music file" error message. The music is all there on the hard drive but I don't want to have to manually locate each one. Does anyone know what is causing this or have a script to locate the rest of the music automatically?
