All I need to achieve is, use the external hard drive connected to my windows laptop as a destination for Time Machine backup for Macbook Pro location. This would be assuming that both the windows laptop and the Macbook Pro are connected to the same wifi network.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have just installed a Lacie Thunderbolt external drive as I want the speed to access large volumes of photographs. If I configure it as RAID 0 I will need to back up the data on that drive. I have a NAS drive which I already use for Time Machine and which works well. Can Time Machine be configured to include the external drive in the backups to the NAS?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am doing tech support for a family member, He is running OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 on a late-2009 27" iMac, and Time Machine is/was set up on a 2TB LaCie d2 Quadra V3 connected through FW800. He had noticed that Time Machine had not run in a while, so I opened it, and his former Time Machine drive could not be found. It wasn't showing up on the Desktop or in Finder, so I opened Disk Utility to see that it is unmounted. When I tried to mount it, it did nothing. I verified the LaCie drive and it returned no errors. I verified the disk, and it failed and returned "Underlying error: 8: POSIX reports: Exec format error". I tried to repair the disk and it returned the same thing. I am not sure if it has been working since he upgraded to Mavericks. It seems to me that the drive is dead, pre-reformat, but let me know if not. (I am not sure why it would have failed. He doesn't seem to turn off his computer, and I doubt he has unplugged the drive at any point. It may have been running for several years straight, though.) If it's dead, is the data likely recoverable?

I am in need of assistance with backing up my macbook pro using time machine. I am running Mac OS X leopard 10.5.8. I have attempted to backup to a network share folder on a Windows machine, but the backup abruptly ends. So, I decided to attach an NTFS external drive, connected via usb. The external drive was formatted on a Windows 7 machine (not quick format); so, it currently has no space occupied. I installed MacFuse and NTFS-3G. Then, I rebooted and attached the NTFS external drive. I set the preferences in time machine to backup to the aforementioned drive. However, Console is reporting that the backup failed with error 19, and time machine is reporting that the storage location for backups cannot be found, when i command time machine to backup now.
Is there something I'm missing? I have seen at least one other thread on the Internet where a mac user was able to get time machine to work with an NTFS external hard drive. Do I need to create a separate sparse bundle image and copy it to the external drive, similar to the method used to get time machine to copy to network shares on Windows? If the ironclad rule is time machine ONLY recognizes HFS+ drives, then a sparse bundle image is a good workaround. But then what is the point of MacFUSE and NTFS-3G. What is its purpose, as it relates to time machine?
I'm trying to backup the contents of my MacBook Pro wirelessly to an external hard drive that is connected to a Mac Mini in my living room. All the tutorials I've read say to create a sparsebundle file with the same name as the one that's found in the folder of your Time Machine backup.
View 1 Replies View RelatedNot only did my MBP hard drive just stop working, but I needed to get the files off of my time machine backup on my other mac. My other mac was running very slow so I upgraded it to SL.
After I upgraded, I plugged my 1TB WD hard drive into it and it does not recognize the hard drive. It worked find before I did the upgrade.
So I borrowed my neighbors mac and plugged my time machine into her laptop running straight leapord and it also failed to mount.
It is almost like plugging it into the computer with SL unmounted the disk inside the casing. It happened to both of my time machine backup drives..
If I can not get these drives to work, I have lost 2 years worth of data that I backed up in two places.
I was trying to set up my Time Machine to an external hard drive. I didn't continue because it asked to "initialize" the hard drive which I had a lot of important things on.

I have been running Time Machine, backing up to my WD 1TB Passport external drive via USB cable. I would like to lose the "umbilical cord" and connect wirelessly to the external via my (newest model) Airport Extreme base station. I want to do this without losing my previous backups.
When I connect via the AE, TimeMachine gives me the choice to backup to this drive but it starts from scratch, making a whole new backup.
When I click to "Enter Time Machine" it gives me the choice to "use previous disk" and when I click to "use selected disk" as in my screenshot, it allows me to peruse the old backups, I just am not able to continue backing up to that backup.
I would like to backup via the AE, but then also have the choice to remove it and connect directly via USB on occasion and continue the same Time Machine.
Is there any way to do this, or is this wishful thinking?
I want to move the location of my iTunes library music files. At present they are all on my time machine . I want to move them all to my imac. Can I do that and keep all my playlists and play counts?
its 1000s of songs . Originally I used the time machine as a networked drive but it can cause the songs to pause so I'm thinking it would be better to have the songs on the internal imac drive
how can I move the songs so I can re-open iTunes and the playlists (with plays in the 100s) find the song in the new place?
DOes anyone know how to get time machine to start backing up as soon as the drives connected? my old mbp running 10.5 used to start backing up immediatly but my new mbp and 10.6.1 doesnt seem to start until i click "back up now" from the menu bar!

After I download Yosemite, successfully, I have been getting messages that that my Time Machine was not backing up.  When I open Time Machine I get a message Time Machine disc not connected. Also the Oldest Backup 28th Sept October 2013 - Latest Backup 28th October 2014. I have checked My Book and that is working OK. What is happening with Time Machine.Â

I have a Drobo external drive array connected by firewire to my primary home computer - a Mac Pro. the last year I've backed up two Macbook Pros (mine and my wife's) to this Drobo using Time Machine (The Mac Pro is always on and the laptops backup through the home network, through the Map Pro, to the Drobo). I recently did a fresh reinstall of Lion to all 3 computers. Now for some reason Time Machine can't kick the backup off. It gives me a "Can't backup - the backup drive us not available," or something like that.
A couple of key points:
* Through the primary computer, I have opened read/write file sharing permissions for all drives, including the FW connected Drobo
* From the laptops, I can see and read/write to the Drobo through Finder
* Through Time Machine preferences, I can select the Drobo as a backup destination - it's only when I kick off the backup that I run into the error.
* If I create a test admin account to try, I get the same problem when trying to back up.
* As a safegard, I have run a manual backup successfully to a separate external drive (mobile g-drive)
I really need to know where a NTFS disk is mounted at a Mac. Don't say the Desktop, or something like that. I need the mount directory. CDs/DVDs and pendrives are mounted at /Volumes. Where are NTFS disks mounted?

View 2 Replies View RelatedJust got the time capsule, going to use it for wireless time machine back ups of my laptop. I would also like to connect an external drive to the time capsule for movies and audio files that are too big for my laptop.
I notice if I connect my owc 7200 rpm external drive via the USB port to the time capsule, things are a bit sluggish when I access movie/audio files over the wireless...What if I purchased an external drive with an ethernet port? would it work if I plugged it into the time capsule? and if so would there be a speed increase?
I am currently considering purchasing a MacBook Pro (just about to press 'buy'). But there's just one question I would like to know the answer to first:
If I use Time Machine with a regular external USB harddrive, how will Time Machine handle it if I plug the harddrive in and out a couple or serveral times a day? You see, I need to move my (future) MacBook around a lot, but I also want to have its data backed up automatically.
Bear with me guys, I'm not sure where to put this question. I figured that because my Macbook Air (and it's limited storage space) was the reason for my needing an external HD I thought this would be the best place. My MBA has run out of storage and I bought a Seagate External HD to move my stuff onto. I guess my question is: What's the best way to combine the external HD with the MBA? Here are a few of the things on my mind:Â
-Most of the space is taken up by my user folder right now such as itunes, photos, etc. If I copy that folder to the external drive it would alleviate a large part of my issue, at least for the time being. Eventually I will hit the storage capacity as I add applications over time I guess, so this is a temporary solution (although I free up 27gb of space this way). Can I designate a folder on the external drive as the default for programs like imovie and iphoto like I can with itunes?Â
-I KNOW there is a way to set the external drive as some kind of default drive but is this feasible? It would be a hinderance if I needed to have it connected at all times to access even applications (which I assume to be the case?Â
-I also wondered about partitioning the external HD and using one partition for additional storage and the other for time machine? It's a 1TB hard drive, and I figure I could make a 100GB partition to use with time machine (my MBA only has a 64gb capacity) and use the other 900GB for files. Is this even possible or does time machine need it's very own separate drive? Anyway, this doesn't necessarily ask many specific questions and I apologize if it appears a little disjointed. I'm looking for help and opinions on the best way to use this new piece of equipment to compliment my MBA.

I have a 1TB Time capsule, I would like to attach a USB drive to the Time Capsule and transfer my iTunes Library to it so I can run itunes from wifi. I am new to network stuff. My current iTunes library is on a USB drive velcro'd to the back of my Macbook - rather inconvenient, the USB port is loose. The music files are external but the library files with ratings/play counts are in the iTunes folder.

I have a MacBook that I'm trying to backup because my husband wants to sell my computer and buy an iPad. I have a WD external hard drive with an iPhoto library currently on it, chronicling the first 28 months of my first child's life; needless to say it's important! The problem is that Time Machine won't back up to the external drive without erasing everything on it! Is there any way around this?
I will probably also need tips on how to put the iPhoto library (28 months to present time, about 2,200 pictures!) on my MacBook onto the hard drive (does that automatically happen upon backup?). Obviously I've done it once, because there is a library currently on the hard drive, but I can't remember how I did it.

I know it sounds strange, but my Time Machine HDD works only on one USB Port.Â
The facts:
I Have an encrypted Time Machine Backup on an External USB 2.0 HDD.
My MBP 13 inch 8,1 (Early 2011) runs the latest OS X Yosemite Version (10.10.1).
Any other external Drive (Flash drives or HDDs) do work on both USB Ports perfectly.
If i plug in my Time Machine HDD in the left port everything works fine.
If i plug in my Time Machine HDD in the right port it isn't even listed as an unmounted device in Disc Utility.
I connect the USB port directly from the HDD to my MBP (without USB hubs or anything else in between).
I am not sure but i believe that both USB Ports are internally connected to one USB Port, so i know its a strange issue i am having here.Â

I have an external 500gb drive plugged into my brand new Time Capsule. The 500gb drive basically stores my entire library of music and my iTunes points to this external drive.
Is it possible to have time machine backup all information on the 500gb drive to the time capsule, so encase the external drive takes a dump, I don't loose my entire music library? Maybe time machine is already doing this, I am not sure.
As my 160N series Linksys router neither has gigabit ports, usb connector or dual band networking, I am looking for a replacement.
When it comes to Apple routers I am looking at 2 options - either the base station with an external USB drive or get a 1TB capsule with the buildt in drive and worries regarding reliability.
What I like about the Time Capsule is that it is neat to have all in one, takes up less space and only has 1 plug to attach, while Iike the idea that I can just connect a bigger drive later on the base station solution.
1. Will the connected USB drive function just like the internal drive in the Time Capsule for Time Machine use?
2. Will everything be transparent to Snow Leopard?
3. In case of both units with an attached USB drive - can I control who actually can see the drive and access it?
4. Do they support this DNLA thing so that e.g . PS3 can access an attached drive??
I want to replace my current HDD with new SSD, here is the steps I will do, identify if this is feasible!!!
1. Put ssd in a external hard drive enclosure
2. Connect the external SSD drive to MBP
3. Back up the entire OS and files with time machine
4. Remove the enclosure, take out ssd
5. Put SSD in mu MBP, replacing HDD
Will this work?
Can I store some pictures on my External HD that I use for Time machine Backups? It is not partitioned and at the moment all I have on that HD is my backups. I know they would already be on the HD if they are on my computer, I just don't know how I go about pulling one folder of pics off the time machine.
