Hardware :: Can Time Capsule Be Connected Via Ethernet To An External Drive
Feb 3, 2009
Just got the time capsule, going to use it for wireless time machine back ups of my laptop. I would also like to connect an external drive to the time capsule for movies and audio files that are too big for my laptop.
I notice if I connect my owc 7200 rpm external drive via the USB port to the time capsule, things are a bit sluggish when I access movie/audio files over the wireless...What if I purchased an external drive with an ethernet port? would it work if I plugged it into the time capsule? and if so would there be a speed increase?

I have a 1TB Time capsule, I would like to attach a USB drive to the Time Capsule and transfer my iTunes Library to it so I can run itunes from wifi. I am new to network stuff. My current iTunes library is on a USB drive velcro'd to the back of my Macbook - rather inconvenient, the USB port is loose. The music files are external but the library files with ratings/play counts are in the iTunes folder.
Info:MacBook (13-inch Aluminum Late 2008), Mac OS X (10.7), 1TB Time Capsule (3rd Gen)

A while back I switched a external drive from being plugged directly into the USB port of my mac to being plugged into the USB port of a Time Capsule, now accessed via wireless network. When the disk was plugged directly to computer Spotlight would find files with the search string contained within the body of the document. Now it doesn't do this (it will only find file names). Is this standard behavior of disks connected to a Time Capsule or am I missing something?

For almost the last year I have been using an Airport Extreme on 2.4b/g and and Airport express in my room to extend my wireless network. I also have a usb hdd configured to back up my macbook using time machine. Well I have a new roommate moving in and he has his own extreme and two expresses.
I have some questions on what would be the best way to consolidate our networking devices. I considered us selling our extremes and getting the new time capsule so both of our macs can use 5ghz while my girlfriends dell uses the 2.4.
Is there a noticeable speed difference between time capsule backup vs hard drive to extreme connected via usb?

I have an external 500gb drive plugged into my brand new Time Capsule. The 500gb drive basically stores my entire library of music and my iTunes points to this external drive.
Is it possible to have time machine backup all information on the 500gb drive to the time capsule, so encase the external drive takes a dump, I don't loose my entire music library? Maybe time machine is already doing this, I am not sure.

As my 160N series Linksys router neither has gigabit ports, usb connector or dual band networking, I am looking for a replacement.
When it comes to Apple routers I am looking at 2 options - either the base station with an external USB drive or get a 1TB capsule with the buildt in drive and worries regarding reliability.
What I like about the Time Capsule is that it is neat to have all in one, takes up less space and only has 1 plug to attach, while Iike the idea that I can just connect a bigger drive later on the base station solution.
1. Will the connected USB drive function just like the internal drive in the Time Capsule for Time Machine use?
2. Will everything be transparent to Snow Leopard?
3. In case of both units with an attached USB drive - can I control who actually can see the drive and access it?
4. Do they support this DNLA thing so that e.g . PS3 can access an attached drive??

I was wondering whether it's straightforward to use Time Capsule to backup another external drive connected to my imac/the TC?
The idea would be to use the external to archive sensitive documents etc and keep these off the imac's internal drive altogether.

I'd like to split my TC into a backup drive and an external hard drive. Apple support tells me they don't support this function, but it's possible. Anyone have any experience doing this?

I am not too tech savvy....Am I supposed to keep the external HD plugged in 24/7 in order for Time Machine to work? Is it going to damage the HD if it's constantly being plugged in?

I am in need of assistance with backing up my macbook pro using time machine. I am running Mac OS X leopard 10.5.8. I have attempted to backup to a network share folder on a Windows machine, but the backup abruptly ends. So, I decided to attach an NTFS external drive, connected via usb. The external drive was formatted on a Windows 7 machine (not quick format); so, it currently has no space occupied. I installed MacFuse and NTFS-3G. Then, I rebooted and attached the NTFS external drive. I set the preferences in time machine to backup to the aforementioned drive. However, Console is reporting that the backup failed with error 19, and time machine is reporting that the storage location for backups cannot be found, when i command time machine to backup now.
Is there something I'm missing? I have seen at least one other thread on the Internet where a mac user was able to get time machine to work with an NTFS external hard drive. Do I need to create a separate sparse bundle image and copy it to the external drive, similar to the method used to get time machine to copy to network shares on Windows? If the ironclad rule is time machine ONLY recognizes HFS+ drives, then a sparse bundle image is a good workaround. But then what is the point of MacFUSE and NTFS-3G. What is its purpose, as it relates to time machine?

I know I can add an external 1 GB drive to my time capsule, and have time machine do backups on that specific drive. If I do so, can I still use the internal 500 GB drive of my time capsule for network uses? or Time Capsule is restricted in a way that it can either use the internal harddrive, or an external USB one, but not both at the same time (one for backups only, the other for a network storage drive).

I'm trying to backup the contents of my MacBook Pro wirelessly to an external hard drive that is connected to a Mac Mini in my living room. All the tutorials I've read say to create a sparsebundle file with the same name as the one that's found in the folder of your Time Machine backup.

I have a new mac mini and a vista pc on the same network. I want to have my pictures, videos and itunes library on a time capsule so I can access them with my mac and pc. I will not be using time capsule as a backup drive. What I want to know is if I can use an external HD to backup my time capsule content. Would it be better to plug the drive to the capsule with usb or to the mac with fw800? The reason I want a time capsule and not a nas is because time capsule is a router at the same time, which means I save space on my desk and dont have to mess around with different components for my network to work fast.

I have plugged in an external hard drive into my time capsule via the usb input. I have a main router for my network and internet and time capsule is connected to this wirelessly. The external drive doesn't show up as being attached to the time capsule and hence I cannot access any files. What do I need to do to be able to access it?

I store all of my photographs on an external hard drive which I backup with my Time Capsule. My external HD crashed and I need to restore the new external hard drive with the files from the Time Capsule. When I open Time Machine I get an error message saying to connect to a current Time Machine backup disk.

Now I want your assistance in some problems that I have with my Time Capsule. This is my scenario:
TC --- (WAN port) --- SW --- INTERNET
|
+--- (AP) --- MBP 13"
One thins, I don't know why but when I post this thread the WIRELESS moves to the TC. The connection of the AP is directly to the SW, not to the Time Capsule.
TC.- 192.168.2.2
SW.- 192.168.2.1 (interface attached to the TC)
SW.- 192.168.1.1 (interface attached to the access point)
MBP.- 192.168.1.23
The TC has the AirPort off. I can access the TC if I type the IP address when open the AirPort application, what I do is this: AirPort application -> File -> Configure other I type the ip address 192.168.2.2 (The TC current IP address) and I'm able to see it. The problem is that if I try to open the Time Machine application I can't find it because the AirPort application stuck in RESCAN.

I just went through a long and complicated process that started when my apartment was burglarized and my laptop was taken, through getting a new laptop, replacing that harddrive and restoring from a backup of my old laptop. After all that, I hooked up my new laptop to the time capsule and restored everything via ethernet. I'm now using my TC as a network extender for the house, I can connect to it and see the files in there, but when I try to set up Time Machine to use it, it starts backing up my entire laptop all over again, which apparently would take 48+ hours over WiFi. I'm guessing that when I set it up earlier and made the backup, it was over Ethernet. Now, it can't find the time capsule over ethernet, and thinks that the time capsule via WiFi is a new source. Is there any way to select a time machine file to use and update? I'm using a 1st generation 1 TB Time Capsule with an uMBP 13", 10.6.5. All software is up to date.

Whenever I plug my Time Capsule into my Macbook with an ethernet cable it is not recognised. On the network setting it says that the ethernet is assigned an IP but whenever I try to start a backup session the device is not displayed? I can connect the Time Capsule wirelessly however due to the time it takes to do the initial backup I want to do it via ethernet.

I'm a first time contributor so please forgive me if I seem a little "wet behind the ears"...I have a 2011 iMac (which replaced my 2006 G5 iSight model) and a 500gb Time Capsule.I have my iTunes Library (which is approximately 150gb) on the Time Capsule but, given the relatively modest 500gb on the capsule there is not enough room to back up my computer.I have been looking at 2tb external firewire hard drives and I am hoping to move my iTunes library onto one of these and then use the capsule to back up my computer with Time Machine (the Mac has an internal 500gb hard drive). I'm hoping this will be a relatively straightforward task! The downside with this is of course, I will not have a back up of my iTunes library...with the hardware that i have does anybody have any advise or better ideas!?

I currently have a Sky provided D-Link modem router that provides my wireless internet (in my lounge, as this is where the phone line is), and the Time Capsule sits nicely out of the way in my kitchen, wirelessly backing up via Time Machine. My wife would like to sit in the kitchen and work on her laptop, but her company's IT policy means that she can only connect via Ethernet. Currently she has to connect to the D-Link in the lounge and sit on the floor. Is there a way of connecting her laptop to the ethernet ports on the back of the TC and then wirelessly connect to the internet?

I will soon get a time capsule. The only thing it does not have, which I need, is an audio jack so I can use airtunes. I have an old (circa 2004) airport express. I would like to set the airport express right next to the time capsule and add it as a client on the time capsule's ethernet network.
I prefer to connect it via ethernet, than to just add the AEX as a wireless client of the time capsule, for two reasons:
1) if connected via ethernet the AEX is less likely to drop off the network for random reasons.
2) the AEX is old and I don't want it to slow down the time capsule's wireless network (every other wireless client of the time capsule will be 802.11n).
So I basically want to shut off the AEX's wireless capability and just connect it via ethernet as a LAN client of the time capsule. Is this possible? Or is wireless the only way to add an AEX as a client to a network.

So I am moving to a new apartment in a week, and the landlord allows us access to his wifi in the building free, but I will not have access to the modem. I currently have a Time Capsule set up as my wifi router and was wondering if, upon moving, there is a way to run the wifi signal through my Time Capsule and use that as my wifi connection?

I will be getting a MBP but I will need more storage, hence the external hard drive. I wanted to buy time capsule but I read that it is not possible to partition it. So, would I be better off with an external hard drive(FireWire 800) that I can actually partition or get time capsule which offers the wireless connection. As for the speed I guess the wireless connection with time capsule must be pretty slow?
