MacBook Pro :: Migration Assistant Running Slow (Yosemite 10.10.1)
Dec 5, 2014
I'm currently attempting to set up a Macbook Pro using the migration assistant, transferring circa 89GB from a macbook air, and the estimated time is in excessive of 24 hours, i'm using a lighting cable, and both Machines are on Yosemite (10.10.1) the latest version.

I just bought a new Mac Mini (Late 2014, ships with Yosemite) to replace a defunct MacBook Pro (Late 2008, last ran 10.8.5). I have a local administrative user account and some server and network data that I want to migrate from the latest Time Machine backup of the MacBook Pro to the Mini. I don't want to copy anything else to the Mini. Neither Setup Assistant nor Migration Assistant will let me deselect anything though. All the check boxes are greyed out. Clicking on them does not uncheck them. This forces me to copy everything from the Time Machine backup to the Mini. Then the Mini won't restart. It won't even boot into safe mode. It just gets stuck in a reboot-loop until I enter recovery mode, wipe the system drive, and reinstall Yosemite.

I installed Migration Assistant on my PC and am trying to transfer my itunes to my MBA. My Mac gets to the screen where the validation code can be seen, but the screen on my PC says that it's waiting for my mac to get online, or waiting to find it. I left it for a half an hour and the code never appeared on my PC screen.

I tried to migrate an friends mac mini from snow leopard to yosemite via an external drive, also via target mode and lan, without sucess.
It alway shows "there is not enogh space on disc" which is not true. Even if I select the smallest part ...
I did verified all drives via disk utility repaired permissions and used different sources to migrate from. I do have access to the Yosemite Mac via sharing.

Macbook Pro (2012) hard drive died. Have full Time Machine backup on external hard drive. Installed new drive in the Macbook, installed Snow Leopard from original CD, and then did the upgrade to Yosemite. Connected the external drive with the TM archive and started Migration Assistant. It sees the TM archive drive and says "choose a volume from the list below" and does not present a list (which I presume would be a list of the TM backup dates). At this point there is no alternative to quitting Migration Assistant.
how to get my data out of the TM archive?

I got a MacBook Air a few months ago and finally got around to migrating data from my MacBook Pro. I am seriously not happy with the results (all I really wanted was to move my iTunes and a limited few apps, and it seems that I got nothing that I wanted). I used a Time Machine backup from an external HD for the migration. Is there any way to undo the migration?

My macbook air running slow even on recovery mode when I press Alt + Power it takes me to Mac os Utilities the mouse barely moves, I erased every thing on the hard drive so I can install a fresh copy of mac os but I couldn't because every time I try to boot up from the USB that got the mac os it takes for ever to load the OS for installtion, and some times every thing freeze when I'm on the Mac os Utilities mode.

Mac started to run slow every now and then, updated to yosemite and now getting worse, slow to open programmes like iPhoto (getting jammed when using), websites and switching between the two. Get a coloured wheel often. More worryingly recently when waking from sleep, the left half of my screen is distorted like an old unturned TV!!
Have included the etracheck report for info:

I recently had a new hard drive put in my 2007 iMac and have been experiencing some problems. I did a clean install of mavericks, then upgraded to Yosemite and the machine has been very laggy, finder and all programs included. I saw a few posts about FileVault being an issue but I checked and it is turned off.
I should also add that the machine was running fine on Mavericks, slowness only started after the Yosemite upgrade.

I have a 27-inch, Mid 2011 running the 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5. I currently have 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 in four slots (4 each).
When I uploaded OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 and shortly after uploaded CleanMyMac 2 I started to experience tremendous latency in processing speeds on all applications. Running CleanMyMac 2 multiple times and removing no longer used apps to free up space did little to resolve the issue.

Yesterday I did a migration assistant (MacBook Pro to MacPro)to get a music file from a friends computer and what i think happened is that I migrated his WHOLE system because now my hard drive has 4.3 GB left when before it was virtually empty because I use ext. hard drives. My question is WHERE are all these files because I dont see any new files (not even the music file that I intended on migrating) but my hard drive is filled up. And if possible, can I remove all the files at once since they all came at once?

I purchased a new Macbook pro( OS Lion) and used migration assistant to migrate my files form (OS Snow Leopard) this worked really well. The only problem is that my office 2011 requires me to key in my product key again. I cant find the disk with the sleeve with the key number on it but the box says it covers two machines at home so I should have no problem. Does any one know how I can find my product key on my snow leopard Mac so I can use office 2011 on my new mac.

I just used migration assistant to bring my data from my pc laptop to my new macbook air. It brought it over, and deposited it under a new user id. But I can't log in as that user because it says the password expired, and doesn't recognize the password I had on my pc (awful vista). When I try to change the password on system prefs, those usernames are greyed out and can't be changed.

I just bought a new MacBook Pro because my other computer pretty much died, in that the screen can no longer be seen. The guy at the store told me it was probably a bad cable running from the computer to the monitor. Anyways, I am trying to get stuff off of my old computer with migration assistant. Right now, I cannot even see if my old computer is logged in, connected to the internet, or anything. In trying to using the network migration assistant, it prompts me to right in a set of numbers to connect with my old computer. How can I do that when I cannot see the screen? Would it work if I bought a cable to connect the two, therefore not requiring me to put in a password or numbers in my old computer?

I'm buying a new 13" MBP in the next couple days, and I'd like to transfer some applications and files from my current MBP but not the entire hard drive contents. I've got a lot of junk on my current laptop and would like to start with a semi-fresh machine. Does Migration Assistant allow you to pick/choose what you want to transfer onto the new machine? Alternatively, could I just drag/drop files from a TM or SuperDuper backup on an external drive (for instance, will MS Office work on the new machine after this process)?

I have a new Macbook Air and am trying to complete the Migration Assistant from a Dell XPS PC (laptop). The process will begin just fine, but says it will take 9, then10, even up to 11 hrs., etc. then doesn't wind up working even after those time frames have passed.
I have a very fast internet connection, so I am not sure why this would be happening. Is there a way to use an ethernet cable instead of wifi? I tried connecting the two computers with an ethernet on a whim but my Mac didn't reconginze the PC, and vicea versa.
I'd like to avoid manually bringing over my PC files if at all possible..

Trying to resurrect my old MacBook Pro. Installed a fresh Snow Leopard system on it, then used Migration Assistant to get my stuff off my iMac (running Lion that I purchased from AppStore). First time, migrated from a Time Machine backup. Then, erased and installed again and migrated via Firewire directly from iMac. Problem is, both times, I get to the login/startup screen of the MacBook and it will not accept my password. Using the same password I used on the iMac. My user name and even the custom icon show up properly.

I've just purchased a new MacBook pro, and previously I had a windows PC so I'm new to Mac OS X, so please don't go using super technical vocab I've read through Apple's article explaining how to use the migration assistant, and it says that the mac will create a new user with the migrated data. So, do I need to make a temporary user, use the migration assistant, and then delete the original user I made first? Or could I make a user, use the assistant, and copy the data from the new user made by the assistant to the original one?

My wife just got a brand new MacBook Air last night. She started to set it up and ran the Migration Assistant from her old first-gen MacBook Air.Wirelessly.Suffice to say she still has 162 hours to go and it didn't improve at all overnight. What are my options for stopping the transfer safely without harming either computer and then getting the new one safely up and running? Can I just "pull the plug" (and how do I do that IBM guy here so Macs are greek to me). Will I need to restore the new machine and can I even do that when it was brand new out of the box?
Her old MacBook Air had some issues with printing, Firefox, etc.Should I do a more select file transfer from old to new to avoid transferring corrupted files? Not sure how "deep" the migration assistant goes.
