MacBook Pro :: Macbook Pro Repair Cost Guesstimate?
Jul 17, 2010
My wife dropped her macbook pro 13 inch off the sofa. Everything is functioning fine but there is a nice size dent on the lower left hand corner of the body.
I know this is obviously not covered under warranty because it's accidental but anyone have an idea of how much it would cost to have the housing replaced? I'm assuming they would have to replace the entire lower housing since it's one piece.

I spilled about a tablespoon of windex onto the keyboard of my 1.66 i7 MBP. Of course it was on when it happened. I turned it off and flipped it over for a few hours. I was getting ready to go out of town when it happened so I had to close it up and take it on a plain with me. When i got to my destination the next day I tried to start it up and it was dead. I have since read all of the I should have done, but didn't. Â
I was looking to get an idea of the different cost scenarios to get it fixed. Like if it needs a new logic board, etc... I understand it might be better to get a new computer but I don't have 2800 for another 17'' MBP.Â

I have used a Apple MacBook Pro 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo (15.4-inch) for the past four years of college. In that time I've had it repaired once for some spillage, but other than that nothing has been done. The laptop has recently been showing serious age. I don't have a ton of extra cash, and was wondering if it would be smartest to A) Buy piecemeal repairs, and fix this one or B) sell/scrap this and purchase something new. I don't know the numbers enough to do a cost-benefit, so any help would gladly be appreciated!
INFO/BACKGROUND
Apple MacBook Pro 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo (15.4-inch) Bought in Summer 2006
? Track pad seems to be breaking/broken ($ fix cost?)o Does not click appropriately
o Frequently messes up typing when barely touched
o Extremely finicky? Screen sometimes displays lines of messy black lines in the middle of images with no rhyme or reason ($ fix cost?)o What in the world could be causing the screen to display improperly in lines?
o Is this a video card failure?
o Is memory too low?
o Is it the logic board? The battery is 100% dead and useless ($ fix cost?)o Laptop must be plugged in to work? Slow, and seemingly inconsistent performance ($ fix cost?)o Memory/ram was never updated
o Safari has to be opened twice to work, first time it always just sits there
o Microsoft Office 03 applications run at a snails pace? Still running original 2006 OS as well as all old OS applications ($ fix cost?)
? Case shows signs of use along edges with separation ($ fix cost?)
Also, if there are any ideas on what this would sell for, or a total cost to get it into solid running (and lasting!) shape would be awesome. I'm at wits end trying to budget for all this -

Okay, so I?ve come to believe that the problem with my MacBook Pro is related to the thermal sensor. What I experienced was:
The fan randomly speeding up to 6000 rpm even when the comp was at 45-55 degree range and then slowly down to 2000 rpm even when the comp got up to like 70 degrees, way too hot for 2000 rpm. (Id rather the fan be loud and at 6000 rpm than not spinning fast enough allowing the comp to get real hot if you know what I mean). I use my comp all the time especially for cpu heavy music production on Logic Pro.
I also experienced two-three random shutdowns. I reset the SMC and I still have the fan problem. Im currently in Brazil which has no apple stores for me to send to for repairs until I get back in the states in July. I was wondering how much a thermal sensor repair runs, how long it takes as well? In case I decide that I should just buy a new MacBook Pro or something, but I really dont want to spend $1200-1600 at the moment.

with my institutional discount, the MBA + ethernet dongle costs $5 more than the new 15" MBP...
Why are the MBA discounts so minimal compared to MBP discounts?

MacBook Pro 13"- I have recently been rather clumsy and spilt 'Super Super Glue' near my tracking pad (2 weeks ago). The pad is now stuck down and I cannot use it to select (I am currently using a separate mouse. Also (just today) I have come to realise that my 'F6' (to light up the keyboard) is not working and has left my keyboard in darkness. Yet 15 minutes later my Mac decided to work again. How much is this going to cost me?!

I'm in the market for the 13" model and I'd like to get the 4gb of RAM in the base model. Unfortunately being that I live in California I'll have to deal with 8.25% sales tax on top of the upgraded price of the laptop. This ends up putting me over $1500 for a base 13" with 4gb of RAM. I can get the 13" with the stock 2gb of RAM off Amazon shipped overnight for $1300 and no tax. So is 2gb of RAM really worth ~$225? I have an i7 iMac as my primary machine and realistically don't see doing any heavy work on the Air, but I still like to "futureproof" my hardware if the cost is reasonable regardless. I did test a stock unit at the local Apple Store and I opened about 8-10 apps like mail, iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, Safari, Finder, some QT videos I found on the computer, etc. With all of that open it seemed to run pretty well. Normally I don't have that many apps open at a time.

So apparently my logic board needs to be replaced. I have the apple protection care package, but was told that if I have any liquid spilt on my logic board that I would have to paid to get it fixed. I was just wondering how much one cost, and if my laptop has a blue tint on it would the damage have came from a drink being spilt on it? I read somewhere it tints the computer blue if the computer gets too hot.

I am wondering if anyone knows what Apple charges to have the bottom plate of the MacBook Pro replaced. When I was at a store, an employee told me that it "might cost, like, uh, forty bucks," in a way that made me think he was just pulling that price out of his you-know-what. After searching eBay for that part and finding no auctions for less than $100, I assumed that Apple would charge something more like that.Â
It's really irritating that in order to replace two of my footpads, I must replace the whole bottom plate of the body. Apple is really trying to get people to buy the service plan, and then a new laptop when that runs out. Great for the environment. The whole unrepairable Retina Display MacBook debacle is just more proof of that.

My MBP recently had a bunch of problems with the logic board and speakers. I brought it into the Apple Store (on Monday) and they gave me the option of them sending it into a repair center, or them repairing it locally in store. I requested that they sent out just because I was curious to see how long it would take. To my surprise, my MBP arrived, fixed and as good as new on my doorstep today. That's amazingly fast for sending it out to a offsite repair center. The repair center is in Philadelphia. I live in Maine. You do the math. When I've had things repaired locally in the Apple Store it's taken weeks to repair instead of days because they need to order the parts.
Anyways, the point of this thread was to suggest to people that they choose the offsite repair option. It's amazingly fast, and it saved me a trip to the Apple Store (they shipped my MBP directly to my house).

My macbook pro 15 inch (i believe its a unibody) 2.66 ghz has been through **** and back. I traveled through 4 continents with it since I got it, dropped it numerous times, keyboard light doesnt work, upgraded to lion from Lepoard, screws missing on the bottom, macbook heats up like crazy and its starting to wear down.  Im wondering if anyone has any kind of link or some kind of guide as to how much it would cost to fix my Mac. I know it wont be like new but it will be close. The genius bar and Apple may be crazy with pricing sometimes but they do the best job. Â

I'm sure if this has been discussed before but I haven't come across the relevant post. Any guess on the price of the new mac pro compared to the current one? In other words, is it expected that the price will also go up to match the improved specs? Or is it still going to be a good / worthwhile deal to wait for the new mac pro.
The reason I'm asking is that if the new mac pro's are going to cost significantly more, then to some the current mac pro and a lower price point might make most logical sense and waiting for the new mac pro is kinda pointless if it pushes it beyond ones budget.

I would like to get a raid setup going on at my house. I currently have
2 Intel iMac's
1 Intel MBP
1 Mac Mini HTPC
I am in the process of making digital copies of all my music, movies, and photos. Obviously this is quite a memory hog. What is the best way to have all the files in one central location, and backed up. I would like the files also though to be wirelessly accessible. Is that feasible? Is there a way to have files on a remote computer, but show up in your aperture library/itunes library/ plex database etc?

My macbook pro is no longer eligible to purchase apple care. It ended in Feburary (should have saved up money and bought it then )but my macbook pro fell from my bed today and caused 2 chips on my keyboard. I took of my keyboard. url...I'm wondering how much it would cost without applecare to replace the keyboard? I'm guessing I would have to replace the whole keyboard for these chippings.

My iMac died a few days ago. I shut it down the previous night, and then in the morning when I went to turn it on, nothing happened. The screen display doesn't turn on, nothing. I opened it up and did the LED tests, and found that the first one would turn on, but none of the others would. The apple site says to take it to a store and have it fixed.
Now, I bought my mac on December 19th, 2004 ( what a day that was). At the time, I didn't think I'd need to buy applecare or anything. So about how much do you guys think it would cost to replace the logic board? And also, how long would it take to have it replaced?

I took my late 2007 macbook in because the case was cracked. I read that this was a known issue and they would repair for free.(I had no warranty) also my battery was expanding and bloated, so much that it will no longer fit in my comp.
When I took it in, the tech said that my bottom case was cracked and he said that wasn't part of the known issue. He said it was caused by accidental damage (it was cracked clean through, so much so that it could be physically separated from the comp.(I informed him that the comp had never been dropped or damaged in anyway, he apparently didn't believe me but said he would see what he could do.
Anyway, he said he could fix the top case ( but they would not fix the bottom case)and give me a new battery although he had never seen a battery with the problem that mine had. He said it was probably expanded cells. I agreed to that as something is better than nothing but then, I asked him if the battery expanding could have caused the bottom case to crack since it was cracked near the battery compartment but on the side of the comp. After he tinkered around for a bit with the battery and the cracked part, he said he wasn't sure but he would send it in for repairs and I would not be charged.
First he said he would quote me a repair price and I told him that I had no intentions of paying for anything. After several instances of him running to the back to talk to people, he agreed to send it in. On the repair form it is listed as tier 4 accidental damage and I know that the tier 4 comes with a hefty charge for repair. Anyway, I am out of town and my comp is scheduled to be returned to me today. I dropped it off at the apple store on the 30th, it was received by the repair center on the 1st, repaired today( the second) and shipped back to me today and scheduled to be delivered today as well.
I was trying to find out if they actually repaired the bottom case or not as I will not be home to receive my comp until next week sometime. The repair form also said call if additional repairs are needed to quote a price. I have not received any calls at this number and do not know if they left any messages on my home phone. The repair turnaround seems rather quick and I was just wondering if they actually repaired it or sent in back in the same condition.
Apple support has no details of the actual repair just the time it was received, repaired and sent back to me. Also will they just leave it outside because no one is home to receive it?

I was just wondering if this has happened to anybody,
A couple weeks ago I closed my Macbook Pro because the battery was low and I needed to plug it in. So I plugged it in and opened it back up...Nothing. I pressed the power button and I could hear the SuperDrive move and the hard drive spin, but that's it. No chime, no gray screen, no POST, nothing. So I did some research and found out that the same thing had happened to a LOT of people with my model. So I assumed it was the whole NVIDIA issue.
So I took it into Apple and the Genius right away told me that the NVIDIA chip/card was the culprit but he still needed to test it with their NVIDIA test drive. He comes back and tells me that they were not able to test it because it cannot boot up that far. So he tells me that since they can't tell for sure if it is the NVIDIA, my computer doesn't qualify for the free replacement. And since my AppleCare is 211 days out of warranty, he can't do anything about it. I could have it shipped out and repaired for $360 (which is better than $1000+ in-house). (BTW.. I even had the logic board replaced a couple years ago for a different reason, so the logic board is newer than my MBP)
I understand where they're coming from, but my computer should be covered in the warranty because it has a faulty part on it, NO MATTER WHAT.

A bit of background:
Back in January I slipped on some ice and regrettably the LCD on my Blackbook did not survive. I have been making due with my computer plugged into a video out (A real pain to do work on) but I really want to get the darn thing fixes. I was really stupid and did not get the Apple Care (which likely would not cover this repair anyway).
Upon taking the laptop to Apple they quoted 800 to replace the unit with a refurb since it was well out of warranty. Everything but the LCD works just fine so I was wondering about getting a replacement screen and doing the repair or sending it out to another company.. My question:
1) What is your opinion on doing this (I cannot replace the whole laptop and I have a 2.16 C2D), is it really worth it? Is this a big repair job?
2) What price should I be looking at. These guys have the screen for $150 but I don't know if they are any good nor do I know of anybody who will do this. Is it something that can be done on my own (i would have a friend assist me). I am not bound to one vendor, but I have never had to do out of warranty repairs on a mac before so I don;t know where to go.
3) Any advice on where I should get the screen at or do business?
4) Am I just wasting my time?
THe reason I ask is that I really cannot afford a new machine right now, but if I can fix the screen like new for around $200 that would be much better. Any advice would be grateful.

So I just got my MacBook Air (rev A) back from AppleCare after my hinge (like many others', apparently) decided to randomly bust itself. I was very pleased that when I took my MBA to the Apple Store, they didn't bat an eye about replacing the hinge (I'd heard horror stories about Apple denying the part was defective and calling the damage a user error, even with computers covered under warranty). But I was shocked when my package arrived today and the letter inside detailed the parts replaced. Keep in mind, the only thing wrong with my computer (as far as I could tell) was a broken hinge. Here's what they replaced:
Antenna window
Video Display Panel
Camera
Bottom Case
Display Housing
Clutch
Clutch (two different part numbers)
Bezel
Top Case
Logic Board
