MacBook Pro :: Macbook's IR Port Communicate With IR Devices Other Than Remotes?
May 24, 2007
Can the macbook's IR port communicate with IR devices other than remotes? (PDAs, Cell Phones, etc) Either under XP or Mac OSX. Or is it strictly for Front Row/Apple Remote?

I am connecting a Canon 5D to my laptop trying to use it as a webcam trough camtwist. At the same time I need to output the streaming to a videoprojector. The cam is connected to the mini display port do there is no port available for the VGA cable anymore. Do I need to use a different port for the projector? Should I buy a video card? Can't connect the camera via USB as that is too slow and it will freeze.

I have the need to connect an external monitor and a firewire cable to my Macbook Air, but with only one Thunderbolt port I am trying to determine if this is possible. Is there such an adapter that would take my single Thunderbolt port and 'split' it into two?

I am wondering what exactly can be fed in and out of the mini displayport on the new iMac, and just as importantly, what extra gear is needed. I have read that things like PS3s in principle can be fed into the iMac, but they need some adapter thing that is pretty expensive, is that still the case, and is it the case for anything that you feed in, other than other apple devices like MacBooks and such?

I just jailbroke my iPhone 3GS and installed MyWi to work with my iPad. I also tried it on my MacBook Pro using Bluetooth. After I paired my iPhone and MacbBook Pro together everything worked fine. Now under the Airport Menu I see a separate category labeled "Devices" which is just below where my Home Network is.
My questions is how do I go about deleting this? I've tried everything. I deleted my device under Bluetooth Preferences, quit MyWi, messed around with the Network Preferences and it still appears under the Airport Menu. I even clicked connect but of course that doesn't work since I quit everything and deleted the device in Bluetooth settings. It's not even listed under "Preferred Networks" when you click on the advanced tab. It appears as "(my last name) Hotspot" and is under a tab labeled "Devices"

The ScreeniPad could communicate with the storage on the laptop via bluetooth and work as a standalone iPad as well. At times the full notebook is not needed while at other times it is. An advanced iPad screen that is detachable form the main body of the notebook fits a lot of needs.I think it advances the iPad to a next level IE: who wouldn't buy the iPad screen model over a standard perm-attached screen model? By incorporating the two, it eliminates the choice between one or the other making it easy on the buyer to have both. And it slams the door on design from the competition for a while for sure.

My MacBook is not connecting to the host computer for the printer. The host computer has a static IP address which is different from the IP address that the laptop is looking for. How do I change the laptop so that it looks for the host computer's correct IP? The laptop is connected to the router. I know this because I can get on the internet with the laptop.

How many of you would like to see a HDMI Port? Why the miniDisplay port? Why not remove ethernet jack and miniDisplay port and replace it with a HDMI port. That way one HDMI cable feeds digital video AND audio. Am I the only one thinking of this?

Does anyone know if the refurbs of the last generation iMacs (the 2.8 24" specifically) come with an apple remote? They did when new, correct? What about the old keyboards?

I am in the market for a remote control for switching through slides in both keynote and powerpoint. I would prefer something small, cheap (b/w $50 and $100) and with a built in laser pointer.

I've been having the problem with my i7 iMac that the computer randomly stops responding to my remote about 5 minutes after I start using it. I can unpair/pair the two and they'll work for about another 5 minutes, but then it happens again and the remote is useless until I go mess around with the machine. This problem has been noted by noted by several people over at the Apple forums, but I hadn't seen it mentioned here. I guess the first question is asking if anyone with a 27" iMac and remote DOESN'T have this problem (i.e., has an iMac that doesn't crap out and stop recognizing the remote periodically). I've got both the old white remote and the new aluminum remote and it happens with both, so it's definitely an iMac issue rather than a remote issue.

Computer is a late 2011 MacBook Pro. I burned 2 DVD's successfully (first time on this new machine) but when I tried to do another one it failed and I got a prompt that said the computer was not communicating with the drive. I shut down, rebooted, tried again with the same result. Called Applecare and they concluded that it was a hardware failure (2nd in 6 months) after trying all sorts of stuff. On a hunch, I tried one more time and, guess what, it burned just fine. It may yet turn out to be a hardware problem after all but it sure "felt" like it was software related or else some kind of firmware glitch. I am running 10.7.3.Â

I have just ordered a new MacBook Pro and it does not have enough USB ports for my needs. If I have a USB 3.0 hub and I mix USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 peripherals on it, will the whole hub/computer USB 3.0 port be slowed down to USB 2.0 speeds?I am thinking back to Firewire, if you have Firewire 800 and 400 devices on the same chain, the whole chain slowed to Firewire 400 speeds.I don't think this is the same with USB but wanted some reassurance..

Relevant newbie to the mac world. I have a MBP late 2009. I bought a third party Mini display port to HDMI converter so I can hook the MBP to my 46" Samsung screen.
This works fine, no major issues here. However the picture is not great. I compared watching a standard definition TV show through the MBP then burnt it onto a DVD. The DVD (using the PS3 as my DVD drive, connected via HDMI) had superior quality than through the MBP.
Also the picture does not quite fill the screen. There is a small black border running all the way around the screen. Does not sound significant but when doing the same comparison as above, you notice the difference when via DVD the movie fills the screen. I have played around with the resolution settings. Those that fill the screen chop bits of the mac desktop off, so thats no good either.
So I am wondering why this is? Is it because the mini display port is not a DVI port, hence I am not getting true HD quality picture? How can I overcome this if at all. I'm thinking of getting a mac mini as a media hub/HTPC but want to ensure I dont encounter the same problems.

So, the built ethernet will not communicate with the N+ Belkin router I just bought. I don't think the ethernet cable is a crossover (plus it worked when plugged directly into the cable modem, it also worked when setting up the ibook) and when I plug both ends into two of the four slots of the router the "wired" light comes on (according to folks at Belkin this proves my cable is good).
The Belkin folks are blaming my ethernet port and believe there is something I could do but can't help reconfigure the ethernets IP address? Just to double check, I hooked up the belkin with my ibook G4 (Dual 533) and it worked fine through the router. The ibook has airport, do I need Airport in my old G4 desktop? Can't I just leave it connected to my router (if it worked). The whole point is to get two computers on line at the same time.

my mac pro desktop was bought roughly in 2009.its running the latest os that this model can run with tiger.the problem used to be intermittent, now it is very hard to get this thing to communicate with the external monitor.the led on the mac shows that its on but it won't chime as it starts up.whenever it did cut on,it would stay on for a moment then a dark tint would scroll over the screen desktop from top to bottom and everything freezes.i then have to turn off the computer from the button.A side note:This computer never functioned properly from day one when i was using it to run my protools music recording DAW.i could barely complete songs as it would run out of cpu and processing power.the computer has 14 gigs of ram,and quad core processing.i took it to apple store for tech support but they found nothing.now i am solely trying to run my serato dj software with it.based on these symptoms, what is wrong with my computer? is it software problem or is it a bad graphics card, bad cpu,is there any parts i can buy to inexpensively overhaul this computer?

I have just recently purchased a new 27" iMac i7 and everything so far seems to run as planned. I have successfully partitioned the OS Boot drive via Boot Camp to enable me to use Windows & Mac OS natively, however, in Windows XP I cannot seem to add the Magic Mouse device via bluetooth.
I have read numerous articles/threads/tutorials but still can't get to the bottom of the issue. I've followed the steps where you input the passcode (0000) or no passcode but there is no communication. Also when I right click on the mouse (device has been found), properties, I tick the box "keyboard, mouse and misc functions (HID)" it states "access denied"??
I then close the Bluetooth Device setup, start it back up to see if it has connected but unfortunately the mouse has disappeared again? Any ideas?
(Note: I am running Bootcamp v3.1 and my wired keyboard is fine.)

I am using Microsoft Word 08 to write my essay, and the trial version of Endnote (10 days remaining) to keep my references, thinking if I like how it works for this essay I would buy the software.
So now I have the reference I need in Endnote, and my essay in Word, and I can't get them to communicate to insert the reference and format the bibliography. I looked up Endnote's help file, and it says there should be an Endnote option in the Tools menu of Word, but there isn't. There is nothing in Word's help menu about Endnote. And in Endnote, all the tools to do with Word are greyed out.
