here's what's wrong:
1- Under sound in system preferences- output volume is muted and I can't un-click it
2-Also under sound in system preferences no devices are found under output and input
3-The sound symbol doesn't show in the top toolbar.
Also I googled this same problem and a lot of other people say a red laser is coming out of the head jack on the computer, I however don't have this problem.
speakers are not working, headphone jack is. Have tried reset pram, and reset the nvram..it worked fine this morning, at the moment it showing a circle with a slash, and is greyed out in the volume control in toolbar

Situation: no sound out from speakers in admin and user account and newly created account. Headphones work, startup chimes work on speakers.
Go to Sound in Preferences and only shows Digital Out for output. Should show Internal Speakers. Ran Diskwarrior and Applejack and zapped pram. Took mac apart and confirmed speakers wired correctly which is verified by the start up chimes being audible on the internal speakers. tested all accounts and created new account all with the same results. Did search of Google and MacRumor. Found one unaswered post indicating same problem. Had same problem with another macbook pro, ran same steps, take apart, confirm wiring setup, Diskwarriored, applejacked and zapped pram and it fixed the problem. I'm not sure what else to try. Did check Audio Midi Setup util and it also did not see the internal speakers.
After I pulled out the jack for my speakers the volume icon was greyed out [URL]and soon I realized that internal speakers as such have been disabled from the system [URL]When I restart the startup chime is played as usual.Is it a hardware or software thing?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 2009 13 inch macbook pro with 2.4 ghz processor, 4 gb ram, all stock from apple. Machine has been working great until 2 days ago when my system froze, had to push the power off button, tried to reboot but got the flashing folder and the internal hard drive was no longer recognized. I did all the usual things and read the apple support page to no avail. I booted from the install CD and the drive is not recognized in disk utility. I took the drive out, put it in an external case and booted from there and the drive appears to be working.
I put in another internal drive, a Hitachi 500 GB/7200 RPM that looks mac compatible, disc utility will not even recognize it either with the external hard drive OS running or from the install CD. In system profiler, under hardware, it says this computer doesn't contain any ATA drives. Could this be a problem with the SATA cable internally? The rest of the logic board appears to be working as I am typing this on the affected machine running the OS from my former internal hard drive that is now in a casing.
Sound isn't coming out of my internal speakers. When I hook up headphones everything is fine, but when I'm on the computer itself, no sound comes out, a red light is coming from my headphone jack, and the volume controls don't do anything (volume stays at max and there's a white circle with diagonal sign thru it, like a no smoking sign) and I don't get sound.
View 7 Replies View RelatedSo... for reasons unknown, my macbook pro is not recognizing it's internal speakers, in the sound options for output it only shows the digital out option.I searched trough the apple support site and the mac's help and all they say is to select the speakers, but that's kinda hard when they play hide and seek. Anyone knows what's up with that? Cause the weirdest thing is that they will make that mac sound when you first press the "on" button.

There is a red light coming from the headphone port and the volume can not be adjusted. Is there a software fix, or do I have to take this thing to the genius bar? I restarted the computer, still no dice.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo the sound on my Macbook Pro is NOT working. I went to the sound settings and the internal speakers option under output is gone. I reset the PRAM and when it did its "second boot", the apple sound played just fine. As soon as I logged in again, the option is still gone and I am getting no sound.

The internal speakers in my MacBook Pro do not work. I went to System Preferences/Sound/Output and there are no Internal Speakers listed as an option to select. They used to work (and I assume they used to be listed as an available output device. I have been on hold with Apple Care now for 43 minutes.

Is it possible by any means to use the headphone output and the built in speakers together.The reason I ask is I have a wireless speaker which transmits from the headphone jack. When this is plugged in it sends everything playing on my MBP to the speaker. This is great but I would also like the music to play from my laptop speakers at the same time.

View 2 Replies View RelatedBoth my 15" MacBook Pro (i5) and my mum's last year 15" C2D ones have what seems to be an inaccurate balance with the internal speakers. The right hand speakers appear to be stronger.
Anyone else noticed this? It's not the end of the world, as the balance can be changed, but you'd think at 50% left 50% right that the volume would be the same per speaker...
I have tried plugging in headphones, and when i take them out, no red light appears like others say. Also, in the sound settings, there is no built in speakers to click on. All of this happened after I deleted a program off my computer, and restarted it. Once I restarted the computer, it stayed on the startup screen so i did the safe start (hold shift while you press the power button).

Has anyone noticed that with a keyboard skin, the sound is much worse (muted, no treble) on the MBA? Is this common to all Macs or is it only on the MBA? Is the keyboard the, y'know, vent or something for the speakers?
I have a 13" MBA, and a Moshi clearguard skin.. I'm a first time Mac switcher so I didn't know if this was common. I do 900miles of research before every purchase, even been lurking around this forum for ages now, but I never read about anything like this - only that keyboard skins may or may not make it run warmer.
I had my computer plugged into some external computer speakers (nothing where I had to downlaod any software, I have used these speakers before), and when I removed them, all of a sudden the built in speakers weren't working. I tried to adjust the vollume, but I get the volume image with a little "forbidden" circle and cross underneath. I tried adjusting the settings in System Preferences, but when I got to the audio settings there was only the one "Optical digital-out port". I then updated my computer, but still no luck. Lastly I went to Utilities and to Audio Midi Setup to reset everything to the default settings, but I am unable to adjust everything. It's all that lighter shade of grey that tells me I can't select it.Â

One day I come home, turn on my mac, try to play music and theres no sound ! looked into the sound preferences and internal speakers are no longer one of the options. 1. Reset SMC - No change.
2. Reset NVRAM - No change.
3. Apple Hardware Test - No problems found.
4. The same machine when booted in Windows (via Bootcamp/CSM-BIOS) plays perfectly and shows Cirrus Logic devices and the HDA devices. This should eliminate hardware issues.
5. I have checked for the Optical Audio microswitch being stuck, but that does not seem to be the case.

And yesterday it finally got stuck on "Digital Output" meaning when I take out headphones from the jack, the internal speakers do not work. I am planning on taking it in and wanted to know, since I am still under warranty will Apple repair it, or give me a new one?
