When I look at the utilities it shows that half of my hard drive is taken up by files listed as "other". I just moved most of my photos and movies onto a separate hard drive but these "other" files, when combined with my others, leave me little space on the hard drive. How can I remove these "other" files (if I can)?

I was backing up my computer today and apparently my hard drive filled up in the middle of the back up so I got a notification telling me that Time Machine had deleted an older back up to make room for it. I need things that are on that back up...is there any way to recover it?

I was trying to install windows on my pro, and i had bootcamp chop the hard disk in half, but then my disk drive didnt read the cd so i had to download and install some file. and after i restarted i could no longer access the windows side, it just disappeared.....plus i cannot reset my hard disk, cant erase it, and i cant reinstall OS X because there is no memory left..
I bought a new 500GB WD hard drive for my Late 2008 MacBook to upgrade from my 250GB drive. I have a hard drive enclosure, but I was wondering if when I install my 500GB hard drive, would I be able to use the enclosure to transfer files from my 250GB drive? My Trash is filled with very large files which I deleted from my Time Machine Backups. I tried to empty the trash many times and each time it took an age to prepare and delete and even then, it didn't delete it. How do I force the trash to empty and to empty quickly rather than take 12 hours? Is there a command line I can use or anything else which will do the job almost instantly?

Since updating to 10.6.4 this morning 2 times while playing java games i've had the bottom half of my screen go black and most of the top half flicker. I've had to hold in the power button and reset both times. The second time I closed the screen and reopened it, the screen was black but no mouse and nothing moved.
Any advice? Would this be something to do with my graphics card or possibly some error in 10.6.4?Edit:: This is software related to 10.6.4 update and only happens when I open up a java game in a browser.
I had a Sony Vaio desktop computer and about two years ago I installed a system update from Windows which completely corrupted my hard drive. It wouldn't be such a big deal except I had about a year of photos which I had not backed up. I purchased around $300 of various (and supposedly reputable) data and photo recovery software; however, none of them worked. I could recover thumbnails and that's it.
I currently have a Macbook with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor running OSx 10.5.8. I also have Parallels with Windows XP. My question is: If I buy a suitable adapter to connect my Vaio's hard drive to my Mac, could I potentially try something else to recover the photos? Or would it just be a waste of time?
I just signed up for Liverdrive in the hope that I could smoothly access every file (music, photos, films, documents etc) from any of my devices.
I used Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer all the files from my MBP to the Livedrive Briefcase drive (stored online, not locally), but to my surprise I found out this morning that something strange had happened:
Before my HD (240 Gb SSD) had around 120Gb free space, but after the attempted transfer I get a warning that my startup drive is almost full (500 Mb free space).
My problem and subsequent question is:
I cannot see those files that were supposedly copied anywhere on my MBP, but in Finder I can see that the HDD is indeed full.

Okay. Ronda is right. I have a MacBook, not Pro. I have tons of harddrive space left. I ran the Repair Disk Permissions. I checked the 'get info' on the harddrive. All permissions in order. I'm away from the office and don't have an external drive to save to, or I'd try that. I'm logged in as the admin. Is my harddrive going south? I have an old version of M.Office. I'm gonna close that and try saving something else to see if it's created a conflict. It really slows the processer down.

View 4 Replies View RelatedBasically I just got myself the latest MacBook as an upgrade from an old laptop. With my old laptop I had no problems what so ever when using my external hard drive. To delete any files I didn't want I would just right click and press the delete option. However, when connected to my new Mac, there is no such option when right clicking on a file. I've tried dragging the file to a recycling bin but I get a message from the finder saying this file can't be deleted. I've tried moving the file out of my hard drive which worked and then deleting it which was fine but the file remained in the external hard drive as I'd only created a copy. I can't figure out how to delete files I don't want. Deleting everything on the hard drive is out of the question.

I've been backing up my MacBook Pro on an external portable hard drive. I need to delete some but not all the files from that portable hard drive permanently. When I highlight them and click to move them to Trash I get a message telling me this cannot be done because they are Read Only files? How do I go about it. I recently converted over to a Macbook Pro from PC and had all of my PC data saved to an external Hard Drive. I can retreive the data fine, but I can't save anything to the Hard Drive. I have plenty of room on my Macbook, but old habits are hard to break and I like to back everything up at least once a week.
I do not want to reformat my External Hard drive as there is ALOT of information on there that would be lost. So, how can I copy things over there, or drag them over to the External? When I try, it gives me the circle with the line through it.
And if you have time, tell me about Time Machine. I am interested, but it seems like alot of work, because I would have to copy everything off the hard drive, let Time Machine reformat it, and then copy it back. Seems VERY time consuming.

I recently got infected with a trojan, and after updating my mac was told I've also picked up malware software. I moved everything I needed to my hard drive and wiped and reloaded my mac. I then checked my time machine backups on my hard drive and found the malware files on the time machine backups too. so i took what I needed off my hard drive and wiped that, but without realising have deleted my uni work folder containing my essays. Is there anyway to recover the files? I've tried using a couple of programs online but there only trials, so when I find the file I cant restore it.

I have an external hard drive that i used to back up all my files including word documents & mp3's etc. I now want to use the same hard drive to back up files from my macbook but i dont want to make a copy of the entire drive (like with time line) i just want to save individual files. When i go to do this, a light grey circle appears with a 'cross out' and i am unnable to copy/save the file. In the past (with PC) all i have had to do is drop and drag to perform this function.

I accidentally deleted an item on my make but it is on my external HD how to I transfer it from the Ex HD to the Mac. this was an IPhoto Library an Album also is there a way to see how many photos I had backed up on a certain day compared to what I have now-another words I did a back up on may 5th and had x number of photos and had lots of issues with adding more photos but was able to do so now I have more photos but I am not sure they all transferred without going through and counting them TIA?
