Nov 12, 2010i had a 2006 macbook core duo that ran really nice with snow leopard, recently the logic board died so it hasn't been used for a month, i got parts from my friend and now running a 1.83ghz core 2 duo logicboard in its place. the big problem what i think is the hard drive got corrupted due to the bad logic board, when i first put the hard drive back in it wouldn't boot except into safe mode and after i repaired permissions it would boot. however it still starts up slow and os performance seems sluggish and if i run disk utility it always has permissions to fix and takes forever.

Jul 17, 2009A while back I was running low on hard disk space so decided to upgrade my hard drive. Went ahead and upgraded to 320Gb. Then after some time, I noticed that the hard drive was making a large spinning noise so I thought it was a bad drive and RMA'd it. I just recently got the new drive and installed it and the drive was making that same loud spinning noise. Now I'm frustrated with this and want to get to the end of it. I'm thinking it might be the rubbers are out of place that holds the drive.

May 9, 2009I notice that while streaming a movie, watching a dvd or playing a game my hard drive fan is so loud, its annoying. I have a 2008 White Macbook and i replaced the stock hard drive with a western digital 5400rpm 320gb and I only have 1gig of ram. I have no problem replacing the hard drive for a 7200 but i just need to know if its worth it. If i were to upgrade the ram to 2gigs would that solve the problem? Is it possible to install a 500gig drive into the white macbooks?

Sep 26, 2010I am so upset right now, this is my 2nd macbook with this problem. I just got this macbook yesterday and the hard drive is making a clicking noise, but it isn't a click....click...click... like a lot of people have had, it's actually more of a quick series of clicks every few seconds, almost like the hard drive is shaking. It goes away for a bit when I am typing, like right now, but after I stop it comes right back.
Also the fan is pretty loud, considering I haven't put anything on the computer yet.. I've already been to the genius bar and all they did was give me a new, worse macbook, so there is no way I'm going back. Are there any fixes for a noisy hard drive aside from voiding my warranty and putting my own in? If it is normal, I might just invest in a good pair on noise cancelling head phones... Thanks!
OS X :: System Runs Slower When External Hard Drive On?
Aug 25, 2010I've been using a LaCie Quadra 2TB Hard drive for a little over a month now.
I've been noticing in that time that whenever I have the HD mounted my system seems to run slower in that it has lots of sporadic hang ups. I get the spinning beachball in all sorts of programs from Safari to Microsoft Word.
I am of course assuming the Hard drive is to blame, so I was wondering:
Can running an external hard drive (for use with Time Machine and general storage) slow a system down (in particular applications)?
The hard drive is a 7200rpm drive and its connected via firewire 800 if that is of any importance.

My 2TB storage space is almost getting full and has started me wondering what I'd need to do to continue working this way. I'm assuming even if I get another 2 or 3TB external hard drive, I'd still have to select only 1 external hard drive for Lightroom to access... Same goes for iTunes. What if I have music in both external hard drives?

May 13, 2008I have an iMac G5 (w/iSight), running 10.4.11. I've had two episodes where the fan inside of the iMac is blowing fast and loud. Once, it started when the iMac was in the sleep mode and I was "waking it up." The other time, it was already blowing hard when I entered the room. (I didn't do anything. It was just like that on that time.) The first time, I couldn't seem to get the iMac to do anything. I finally unplugged the computer, waiting a minute or so, and plugged it back in. Everything seemed to be normal. I still called Apple (I have iCare) and reported it. The second time, I called Apple again, just while it was still blowing hard.
The specialist had me power down, power up, and then run the utilities to check the hardware. Results came back nominal. Both times, I reset the PRAM too. Apple told me after the last time that if it happens again that I should take the iMac to the store for checkout. I'd rather not, as the closest store is 225 miles away. I've also had some noisiness from the CD/DVD drive. It's run loud enough that people on the Apple end of the phone (on other trouble calls) noticed. Otherwise, the functionality of the unit is fine.

I'm expecting the entire catastrophe...cracked glass, flickering, yellow fever, and a loud hard drive.

Dec 3, 2007This morning the hard drive on my G5 sounded like it was at 8000 rpm's and there was a message on my screen to shut down the computer using the power button. I did this. Now anytime I try to power back up, I get the white screen with the apple and the "booting" icon, which then goes to a blue screen with the same icon, which then is just the blue screen with my mouse icon floating around. Also, on the random occasion, after booting to the blue screen it takes me to a DOS looking screen that asks for my login and password, of which I have neither.

Power Mac G5 :: Loud Wild Fans - Hang Ups And Hard Reset
Dec 7, 2007I have a DP 2.7 G5 Tower and lately I come into my office to find it with dark screens (dual monitor setup), and I am unable to in any way control it by the mouse or keyboard. I imagine it's "hung?" The fans are on full blast and it sounds like it's planning to take off at any moment. I've awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of it and it's in that same state. What to do? I restart it at the power button. I then have to run Disk Utility to verify all the disks and RAID setups.
Anyway, I read about the coolant leaks issues. I started running a temperature monitoring program for the past few months, and its been doing about the same type of pattern since I started monitoring it. Doesn't appear to be unusual. Everything appears to be working fairly well, except for this issue. System is OS X.4.11, and checks out fine with Disk Utility. So far the hard reboots haven't done any damage to my disks, but it worries me greatly. Also the "liquid cooled" aspect worries me greatly.

Dec 1, 2009I have a Unibody Macbook, and recently it has been very slow. But not with processes as much has hard drive related actions such as playing back saved video, loading files in the finder, especially applications, and its been temporarily freezing lately for like 10 seconds. I have also noticed unusually loud clicking noises from the hard drive, which i am pretty sure screams imminent hard drive failure. Do this sound , does 4 gigs of ram make a noticeable difference over 2?

Oct 20, 2009I have a macbook unibody 2008 2.4, I ungraded to snow leopard, Id say for the past 3 months any time I open up safari or firefox after I have 5 tabs open the computer runs slow as can be. The computer when I scroll the little pinwheel pops up before I can do anything, it has gotten so bad the pinwheel has to pop up when I type more then 5 words. It has gotten so bad that even after the browser is closed I have to reboot my computer before it will run normal again. I know its not my ram I upgraded to 4gb of ram and I do clean out history and defrag on weekly basis. Is there any solutions that wont require a reboot.

MacBook Pro :: Runs Slow And Uses A Lot Of RAM?
Dec 2, 2014Problem description: My computer is using a lot of RAM. Wondering if there’s a hardware issue, or a software issue, or something else. I currently have no programs open in the Doc, besides EntreCheck. and the RAM is showing about 75% used. What I can do to speed it up and make it more functional, and efficient for doing design work. I recently upgraded from the original 4GB RAM (2x2GB), and from the original HD to a 512 GB SSD drive, and upgraded to Yosemite. Perhaps that was too much for this machine?
I have a recent back-up, I'm open to saving user files and starting from scratch with the current hardware, etc... but would need some direction on how to do this. I did upgrade myself using Apple provided instructions.

Almost immediately after starting to use the laptop the fan starts running and doesn't quit until you put it back to sleep or turn it off. Any ideas on why this is happening and is it harmful to the computer in the long run?

Aug 15, 2010When I made the switch to the Mac world with a MacBook Pro, I needed to replace my old Microsoft Money for simple small business functions. I tried a number of Mac programs, and all were lacking. Fortora came close, but definitely no cigar. So I installed Windows 7 to permit me to run Quicken. Despite all the strong negative reviews, this program works well and is far ahead of all Mac financial software. Since I use Windows only for Quicken and for Audible Site, since iTunes does not play nice with my Sansa Clip.
I didn't want to divide up my 4 MB of RAM using virtualization software. So I use Boot Camp, and this solution works well for me. What was immediately obvious was that my Mac Book runs very hot when using Windows, where I do little more than use Quicken. So hot that I dare not set my machine on my lap. As soon as I reboot to the Mac OS, the machine cools down. My impression, although I have not really tested this, is that the battery also runs down faster on the Windows side.
MacBook :: Fan Continuously Runs At 6200 RPM?
Sep 3, 2010I have a late-2006 MacBook (2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo Merom) that has been serviced several times. It�s had the fan replaced twice: once in the summer of 2007 because it completely failed, and once in the summer of 2009 because it had been making clicking noises. The logic board was replaced last November because of some minor issues with the headphone jack, along with the LCD which had some gray dots starting to appear.
I�m not sure how long it�s been doing this, but the fan seems to be running way faster than would be normal. The fan never seems to run below 5000 RPM, and once the CPU warms up, it seems to run continuously at 6200 RPM (the maximum speed). smcFanControl (set to Default fan speed, the minimum) usually reads the temperature as being between 145 and 155 degrees Fahrenheit. I took the keyboard off yesterday to clean dust out of the fan, but it didn�t seem to do much. I�m pretty sure this isn�t a software issue, because the fan also seems to run a lot when the MacBook is booted into Windows 7, although I�m going to try booting it from the OS disc and an external hard drive just to be sure. I�ve tried resetting the SMC, and I�m pretty sure I tried resetting the PRAM a while ago. The only remaining thing I can think of is that when the repair tech replaced the logic board, he didn�t apply the thermal paste properly (the optical drive was replaced even though it was working when I sent my MacBook in, two hinge screws were overtightened, and the bezel was not installed properly).
Are there any other things that could be causing my MacBook to not cool properly? If booting from another copy of the OS doesn�t change the fan speeds, I�m thinking about taking the heatsink off this weekend and applying some Arctic Silver.
MacBook Pro :: New WD, Runs Faster, Also Noisier?
Dec 6, 2010So I bought a new WD, did a 1:1 backup with a Carbon Copy Cloner, put it in my 2010 MBP13.
It runs faster, but is also noisier. With this I mean the operating noise, not clicks or anything like that. I'm 100% sure I fastened every screw tightly. And before anyone asks: Yes, I also moved the torx screws from the original drive to the WD.
I thought it shouldn't be louder?

Feb 11, 2009My MacBook is from the Summer of 2007, so its not the newest one but the last model, a black one. Basically, it just runs slowly. Sometimes i'll boot it up and just dragging icons can be really choppy and opening files or just double-clicking the Mac HD icon will cause that spiral of colors to pop up. It isn't always super slow but I would say that my mac is a lot lot slower than it was in the first 6-8 months I owned it. It has 1gig of memory and it isn't like I have lots of programs running at once (if i was i would understand it being a bit slow) My guess is just from going to websites, cookie build-up, maybe the hardware is just againg, pop-ups, pornography, or whatever is just causing it to slow down. I'd like to not have to reinstall the os and i'm at school anyways so i dont have the disc for that. Any idea what I can do?

Unchecking put harddrive to sleep when possible did not fix the problem.
