MacBook Pro :: Backup With Partial Internal Drive
Nov 3, 2010I am planning to change my current HDD drive with new intel SSD, so I need to back up all the files on my current disk. The capacity of my current HDD is 320GB, so I made an equal partition, 160GB-160GB. Since there's just 120GB occupied in my HDD, I assume I can back up it with the alternative partial 160GB, sounds feasible? Another problem, after replacing it with SSD, should I just make the internal HDD external, and plug it to the macbook pro using USB to install all the OS and files?

This way, if there is a problem with my internal drive, I can just swap in the cloned drive and boot from that, never missing a step. However, I am wondering if this is a good strategy. What if something else fails on my mac like the motherboard - would I be able to boot my cloned drive on another mac?

I have two internal drives, one SSD one HD. I have my OS and applications on the SSD and my home folder on the HD. I have an external drive that I was using as a time machine backup and had no issue backing up both drives. The problem arose when I needed to restore my computer. Time machine had backed up the data as basically one drive, so when trying to restore it wanted to load all the data onto either the HD or the SSD ONLY. I was unable to restore as the combined data was to large for either drive. I was able to get my computer back in working order, but would like to avoid such a catastrophe in the future. My Current Issue:
What I am hoping to accomplish would be to partition the external drive, and then have two independent time machine backups. One for the SSD and one for the HD. This way I would be able to restore the drives separately in the future if needed.

(love it btw). but anyway my roomate also has a macbook and i let him back it up on my time capsule as well... now were both moving to different locations and i want to get rid of his backup to allow for more space.. how do i do this from my macbook?... is it possible?
if not would i have to reset it? or maybe get him to get rid of it on his macbook?.. (he would give me a hard time so id rather be able to just delete his stuff myself, and hes taking up significantly more space on it than i am so i want it off)

Jan 17, 2010I want to delete my time machine backup folder. I have other files on the disk and can not reformat. In the past, I have dragged the folder to the trash, and even though that worked, the process have sometimes taken hours, and on an old powerbook, it took more than 24h.
Right now I'm trying the terminal command sudo rm -rf. My aim was to save time by bypassing the trash. But the process has been going on for about 30 min already, and I see "Operation not permitted" after many or most of the lines. Does anyone know what that means?
What is the fastest way to just delete a time machine backup folder. Surely there must be a way of deleting a folder instantly, without the OS having to go through and verify every file?

May 30, 2012What i want to do is i dont want Time Machine to backup my bootcamp partition (win 7 with ntfs format). but when i click on option, the time machine will automatically include it. and i canNOT remove it. the miuns ( - ) symbol is gray out and i cant do anything with it. how can i not include the bootcamp partition in my backup? if it still not clear, you can reply and ask me more about it.

Mar 23, 2012My MacBook Pro is running out of hard drive space, and the culprit is Time Machine. Apparently Time Machine stores local backups on the hard drive when it is not connected to the backup drive, and then is supposed to delete them when it does backup. However, this causes huge problems because I'm running out of hard drive space. I ran the following in Terminal to turn off the local backups:
sudo tmutil disablelocal
However, that has not freed up the hard drive space taken by the local backups.

Jun 29, 2014I recently purchased a new SSD and would like to input that into my MBP 2012. If I have a partition on my external HDD that contains the carbon copy of my MBP, am I able to clone it into my SSD after I have installed it in the MBP through the USB?
Internal HDD --> External HDD
Place internal HDD into optibay, and place SSD into the harddisk slot
Connect External HDD via USB to MBP
CarbonCopy to new SSD via USB from External HDD
Format Internal HDD
Will this work?

Dec 5, 2014Somehow, when installing RealPlayer I managed to get something called RealNetwork (a Folder full of files) installed in my User Library. It was 395.62 GB so must have been some sort of malware. I was able to find it and delete it from my hard drive. BUT I had backed up my hard drive to a non-bootable backup the day before so that file is still in the invisible Library folder on that drive, taking up almost 400 GB there, too.
How to delete it from the backup drive since I can't boot that drive?
I'm using Mavericks 10.9 on a MacBookPro with a 2T Seagate backup drive.

Dec 3, 2008i have a macbook with an internal drive of which about 230gb if full and used.
I have a 250gb external which i have been using to back up with time machine, done it several times over a few months.
Now there is like 70gb left on the external, and when i try to back up, it says failed, not enough space on external.
But i thought when there is not enough space, it simply deletes and backs over older time machine backups.

Nov 16, 2009Basically somehow my iTunes got jacked up.. just the music part of it.. Anyway, they are all songs from my CDs or mp3's, but just as a failsafe, I would like to backup my entire iTunes library to my external hdd.
I would then like to delete all the songs from my iTunes, and from my iPhone. *edit* figure'd out how to remove all the songs from my iphone.. just unchecked all songs and sync'd.. now I just need to backup itunes and delete everything from it, then reput what I want back into itunes and resync.. sweet
After which, I would like to rebuild my iTunes library using my mp3's and CD's and basically start from scratch.. so that this time around I can properly name songs/albums/artwork/etc
Then I want to take this new iTunes library, and fill my iPhone back up with my new Library in Itunes..
so basically I just want to backup my itunes just incase for some reason I cannot find a particular CD or mp3 in my collection.
Just for the record, I am using a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard 10.6.2, and I have an iPhone 3GS 32GB running the latest 3.1.2 firmware (jailbroken using blackra1n rc3)

Oct 26, 2008I am getting the following error from Time Machine when doing my first backup. The startup disk being backed up, and the TM disk are both the same size.

Time Machine: 465.44 (total); 465.29 (free)
The Time Machine error is: Quote:
"This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 472.7 GB but only 465.3 GB are available." why would this be? Other disks are excluded from the backup, and Time Machine is telling me that it needs more space than it actually needs. What should I do?

Mar 24, 2012I use Backup3 to make a backup set every day to an external drive, and I've set it to make a new full backup every 30 days.So the first (earliest) file is a Full Backup, and then there are 30 Incremental backups, and then a new Full Backup. Once this new Full Back is on the drive, is it safe to erase the previous Full Backup (from a moneth ago) and all the previous Incremental Backups (from the previous 30 days)?

Nov 10, 2007I want to keep my applications etc on one internal HD and use my second internal HD as a back up.I am a graphic designer, and i have been backing up to an external LACIE Porche 160 Gig firewire HD. This has worked fine, but...My second internal HD (112 gig?) is still loaded with 10.3 and has adobe CS2 on it along with some other crap that I no longer need.I have loaded Adobe CS3 on my primary drive and have all the files I need on that one...What is the best way to set up my second HD as a "slave" drive to improve the performance of my G5 dual 2 Ghz??Will there be any issues now that I loaded Leopard on the primary HD?
