MacBook Pro :: Battery Maintenance (Full Recharge / Discharge)
Jan 1, 2009
I was wondering if doing a full charge and then a discharge is a good thing when a new mac or new battery is bought? Also should it just be a simple charge and discharge or does it have to be a full calibration? Also what is the best method in maintaining a healthy battery? Should I cycle at least once a week and do a calibration every few months? Or should one cycle per month be fine? Also is it alright if the battery is fully charged and I have the plug-adaptor plugged in to my MacBook Pro while using it? Finally, is it true that over night the plug or when not in use and not charging the plug should be outside of the MacBook Pro?

I'm trying to calibrate the battery of my new MBP. I need to get the battery to fully discharge and sleep for five hours or more. What are some things I can do to get my battery to discharge more quickly? Do I need to tell the MBP to not go to sleep after 10 mins of non-use, or the battery might last through the night? Or is it just the display that sleeps? I'd like to be able to use my MBP in the morning, but I'd like to make sure I get at least the recommended 5 hours of dead battery.

I want to know if leaving my Macbook Air charging 20/24 hours a day will decrease the battery's useful life? I like to use my external monitor and close the clamshell on the MBA, and the only way to do this is to connect the laptop's AC adapter. I also want to know if I should be discharging the battery completely once a week, as some Google searches have recommended? Basically, will the useful life diminish at a faster rate by not discharging the battery completely, and charging the battery constantly while the battery is at max capacity? I keep reading that with the newer lithium-ion batteries, it does not matter how the battery is charged, is this really true? I am concerned because the MBA battery cannot be easily replaced.

i have a 13" mbp with 130 cycles an i use it extensively.its been about 6 months since i bought it and i noticed tht apple will cover my battery in warranty fr one year only if it has less than 300 cycles on it.
my problem is tht i typically use my laptop fr no longer than 4 hours at a time. which means i recharge the battery jus before the battery meter hits red an counts 1 cycle as complete.thts why i got less number of cycles on the battery
cn i continue doing this without any adverse effects to my battery and its life ??

My Macbook won't recharge. I drained the battery and then accidentally turned it off. I know this was the wrong thing to do since it wasn't shut down properly. Now it won't recharge and I can't get it to start up.

I got mine yesterday, and am calibrating the battery. When you run it down to sleep, and recharge, can you use it during the full recharge period?

I have an early 2008 non-unibody MacBook Pro. For about a year now, the status of the battery has been "replace soon." I was still getting a pretty good amount of time off of one charge so I wasn't too worried. This past Saturday morning, I woke up, checked the battery indicator lights on my computer (it had been sleeping since the day before) and it said it had about 60% percent so I opened it. I was on the Internet for about 10 minutes before it shut off without warning.
It wouldn't turn back on when I pressed the power button, so I plugged it in and it turned back on. When I checked, the battery status was "replace now." After using it, I turned it back off and left for NYC for the weekend and didn't bring it with me. When I got home last night, I plugged it in and tried turning it on with no luck. The battery indicator light was flashing one light, so I just assumed it would need to charge for a bit before it would turn back on. After about two hours, when I went to bed, it still was flashing just one light. I kept it plugged in over night, and this morning when I checked it, the battery indicator lights showed that it was fully charged, but it still wouldn't turn on. I still kept it plugged in throughout the day just in case, but it still won't turn on even though all the lights are lit. Is the battery just showing me false information, or should I be worried about more than just the battery?

So I was working on my MacBook Pro making a slide show and my other computer needed some power so I unplugged my Pro and plugged it into my other computer. After about five minutes my MacBook Pro just shut down. I don't know what happened, but the power is full and when I press the power button it doesn't do anything. It's almost like the power button doesn't even work.

I looked around and I find varying opinions. My laptop is mostly at home. Should I keep it plugged in when its full or should I let it drain? Please explain too.
Also, coconutBattery says I've used five cycles even though none of those were complete cycles. Is it just problems with the software or does it really count as a complete cycle?

I just bought my macbook this past weekend. I've noticed a drop of over 100 mAH in my battery's full capacity, after two cycles. Is this normal? Does this drop slow down?

I received my new 15", i7, 128gb ssd, 8gb ram macbook pro on april 19th. I love it and have no problems. Have any of you guys noticed that the full charge battery capacity, which is found under system profiler-power, varies often. When I first got the macbook pro the full charge capacity of the battery was around 6830. Now with each charge it seems to go down slowly. At first it jumped from 6800 to 6600 and now stays at around 6520. Is this normal?

The battery has been taken out and reinserted. The little LED on the charger will not turn on while it's plugged in but isn't charging. I only have this problem if my Macbook has been running off of the battery for more than 7-8 hours and the battery percentage does not seem to make any difference.

I had some issues with battery drain while sleeping awhile ago but that problem has been solved. However, ever since that incident I could not be paranoid about the battery life etc.I heard people saying that leaving the charger plugged in is simply fine as long as I do the regular calibration once or twice a month or so. Yet, Apple stated that they do not recommend the laptops to be plugged in. I will be going to a college this Sept and I really do want my laptop to last at least the whole 4 years.
Ever since I have contacted Apple customer service about this Battery issue I have left my Macbook charged up and plugged in while using and letting it sleep. One thing I have noticed is that the battery indicator says 99% and doesn't increase or decrease yet the green light is on. Is that normal? Since this is my first Mac ever and also first Laptop I would like some advice on how to treat the Battery( I know how to do Calibration and such). Is it better to do full cycle usage of Alum Macbook battery than leaving it plugged in all the time? (I unplug it when the Macbook is off).

Late 2008 refurb Macbook Pro, 2.53ghz, Windows 7 RC (therefore forced to use the 9600 at all times). According to this report, the MBP got around 3&1/2hrs of run time with a dimmed screen and watching videos. From a full charge, I start browsing the internet (no videos at all), and my battery reading read as follows
91% 1hr, 16mins
90% 1hr, 20mins
89% 1hr, 24mins
87% 1hr, 23mins
Not only were the readings all over the place, but even from a full near charge I wasn't even getting an estimate of 2hrs, while Apple advertised 4 for the late 2008 model, and the review I linked to says they got 3&1/2. Do I have a bad battery, or does simply running the 9600 reduce the battery life by such a drastic amount? I have already calibrated my battery following the guide on the Apple website.

i charge my macbook full and it only ever lasts me up to 2 hours (never more) lately. i got my pro in september and noticed these problems a couple weks ago. the battery also runs loudly and the entire time my mac is on and my mac heats up real quick and hot. should i just bring it in to get it checked out?Â
i also only ever have a few applications running, the same ones ive always had running. theres no reason i should currently have 1:53 on my mac left at 90% battery.

My 10 month old Macbook Air 13" battery behaves weird every 4 weeks. When unplugged the MBA switches off suddenly without a warning even the battery is still more than half full. Plugging it in it tells it takes 20 hours for a full charge but never gets full. After unplugging it crashes after some minutes again and goes dark.
The battery' got 178 load cycles and 5675 mAh out of originally 6700 mAh (84%). Did several SMC resets and PRAM resets. I even reinstalled Lion from scratch without changing the battery's behavior. Calibrating the battery isn't possible because it does not discharge but crashes. I tried three different power adapters.

My wife's Macbook 2.1 is acting strangely. The Battery indicator led's are full (green) the charger led is also green and the software shows 100% battery is charged. After a couple of seconds after disconnecting the charger it switches off. I've tried resetting the SMC and this allowed a full nights use without the charger but on the next day it went back to only holding for a couple of seconds. I don't want to have to reset the SMC every day. It's running on 10.5.8 and is all up to date.

I have a mid 2011 Macbook Pro that has been shutting down randomly. It'll have a full battery, but shut down when I unplug it or even sometimes when it's still plugged in. Every time I start it up again, the date is changed to Jan. 1 2008 and there's a notification that because it's set to that date, some applications may respond "erratically". It did this for about 2 weeks, then was back to working fine for about a month and now it's started up again.Â
Today when I turned it back on after it shut down, a notification said to rebuild the iPhoto library. I didn't really know what it meant so I clicked OK because I thought it would help. Instead it erased my entire iPhoto library and shut down again. Â
