MacBook Pro :: App Store Not Responding When Trying To Upgrade To Mavericks
Aug 28, 2014
I have a Macbook pro (2.7 Ghz intel Core i7, 4 GB) with snow leopard (10.6.8) which I wanted to upgrade (finally) to Mavericks.
Sadly every time I press in the App store "free upgrade", the spinning wheel pops up and after a few seconds, when I select the application list I see that App store is no longer responding and I have to Force Quit the application.

I have a 27" iMac purchased in July 2011. I never had any issues with the trackpad before upgrading to Mavericks. I upgraded a few months ago and started having sporadic issues with the trackpad. When the iMac woke up, everything seemed fine at first. About once or twice a week, after it had been working for about a minute (just enough time to start web browsing), the trackpad would suddenly stop responding. It then progressed to being more consistent (every other day). The cursor was still visible and the keyboard still worked. The trackpad was still on but apparently not connected. I thought it was the batteries, but new batteries didn't work. I could get the trackpad to work again by using Spotlight to open the Bluetooth System Preferences. The trackpad worked immediately when Bluetooth preferences were opened (nothing needed to be changed; it would just start working).
However, it would stop responding after about ten minutes. It was interesting because even if I left the Bluetooth System Preferences open, it would still stop responding after about ten minutes. I could use the keyboard to make the preferences window active and it would immediately work again. It would then work again for a few minutes and then stop. I found that removing the trackpad and re-connecting it would cause the trackpad to start working again more consistently. It would only stop if the iMac went back to sleep for an extended period (overnight).
The useful keyboard shortcuts are cmd + spacebar to open Spotlight, type bluetooth, use the arrow keys to go to Bluetooth system preferences (hit enter), use the arrow keys to go down to the trackpad, press spacebar to unconnect, again to confirm, and then after the trackpad is automatically rediscovered, press spacebar again to pair it.
This went on for about a month, when I had what I suspect was an unrelated problem. The trackpad started acting as if it was being held down (left click was always being pressed). I took it into the Apple Store and they confirmed it was broken. At that point I had a brand new trackpad.
The issue had gone back to happening every other week or so. I thought it might be interference, but I've since physically moved apartments and all the objects around it. It's been a couple months now and it's back to happening every couple of days or so. Since the trackpad is brand new, I have to think this is a software issue. I've noticed the following consistently:
1) It only stops responding if I've put it to sleep (I usually do so with a hot corner, but I don't have any reason to believe that's related) and haven't used the computer for more than 12 hours.
2) It'll always work right when it wakes up. It'll stop fairly consistently 1 - 2 minutes after waking up.
3) Time Machine seems to be busy doing something when the trackpad stops (the little icon is spinning in a circle if I have a Finder window open). Uncertain if it's always doing something or if it's coincidence that I've noticed it more recently.
4) As mentioned above, opening the Bluetooth System Preferences will always get the trackpad to respond, but then it'll stop after a few minutes. Unpairing and reestablishing the pairing will fix the issue for awhile (at the very least until the next time the iMac sleeps).
5) I may be imagining this, but before upgrading to Mavericks, I think it used to show the message that the trackpad was connected when the iMac woke up. I no longer see that message unless I remove the connection and setup the pairing again.
I've seen lots of people with various issues with Bluetooth connectivity and Mavericks. I'm on 10.9.4.

I have a late 2010 Macbook Pro. I do a lot of Audio Production and Post Production work on my MBP. I have owned Macs for years and am almost always able to use, update, upgrade, install, uninstall, reconfigure, test, diagnose, and fix them on my own UNTIL recently. About a year ago I bought an SSD from OWS and a Optical Bay HD Kit for installing a 2nd drive. I removed my Optical and Installed a New 1GB SATA Hard Drive using the kit in that bay. I have no problems with that Drive that I'm aware of. I removed my old 500 GB Hitachi SATA and replaced it with a New OWS Mercury Extreme SSD. I have no problems with that drive either, that I am able to find through extensive testing. I upgraded the RAM to the full 8 GB. The factory bracket that holds the RAM in place doesn't work well (at least not anymore, if ever they did) as the tabs don't hold the ram in tight. I wedged tiny bits of cardboard in to hold it tight, it seems to do the trick. I did a clean install, not from a backup. Upon the hardware upgrades and clean install the MBP became much faster. It was very responsive and seems to really work nicely. I began installing my industry third party applications such as Logic Pro, Ableton, NI Maschine, Traktor, etc.
Everything worked great except that Ableton Live 9 then started not launching the GUI upon initialization occasionally. Then it got so bad it was inhibiting my workflow. I did a clean install again. No luck. Then over the period of the next few months the MBP began lagging sometimes on initialization of apps, and just acting a bit quirky but just occasionally while mostly working well. Then other apps began to follow suit and would just stall with the 'application not responding' in the dock icon. This would all happen randomly. I then noticed in the morning upon first opening and powering on, the apps would open. But they would not open more than a few times in succession. So about 3 weeks ago I did another clean install, upgraded to Mavericks upon making sure all the apps are compatible with the platform.
I then updated the OWS SSD HD with new firmware, I updated all the apps on my computer. Then I repaired permissions many many times, and repaired all the drives from the Disk Utility. Upon no change in the MBP behavior I ran the hardware testing from the install disk with no bad results. So then I ran it in loop mode for 18 hours. It shows all hardware is working properly. I reset the PRAM and the SMC. I ran terminal command tests, I ran the console. I booted from another MBP and ran the Disk repair from it with nothing showing as bad. I have spent hours and hours on forums with no luck. I consulted an IT who works for NBC and he was stumped. I finally took it in to a Genius Bar week before last where they proceeded to do a lot of what I had done with the addition of running their in store repair software which I didn't have. They kept it and ran tests in the back in loop mode for a few days. They then called me and said it was ready for pickup and that there was nothing wrong with it.

Have just upgraded my macbook to Lion. I logged into the app store, bought, downloaded and installed Lion no problem.
After upgrade I returned to the app store to download ibooks author. I can find ibooks author but when I try and install the app I have to sign in and I get a "connection failed" error message.
The same happens in iTunes when I try and view my account - "The network connection failed"
I can access the internet with no problems - including secure sites. I can access software update with no problems.
I have made no changes to my network settings - could sign in and download apps before upgrade, unable to after upgrade.

For the past 2/3 weeks the itunes store has become extremely slow and to load a page on it takes 2-3 minutes! It also has loads of missing images/links and when buffering a preview track it takes up to 30 seconds to play a few seconds of the track. It is defiantly not a problem my end with internet and it is over 2MB. I have just read on the Apple Discussions that this is happening to other people with the latest update. [URL].

After I boot and log in if I attempt to open a drive or folder that's on my desktop it causes the Finder to be non-responsive and a beach ball persists. In the window of "Force Quit Applications" it reads "Finder (not responding)". If I force quit finder it will quit and relaunch, but then the same scenerio all over again. If I do a Spotlight search for say an App that's not in my dock and then select it I can get any App to launch. If I choose an App from my dock I can get it to launch. If I attempt to restart the machine while the beach ball is spinning the restart will be ignored and I have to hard shutdown and startup via the power button.
I also have another user account, on this system, which has the same problems.
I've run DU permissions repair and ran all weekly and monthly scripts via Onyx.
Booting in Safe Mode has the same effect.
Console
If I run Console and attempt to open a drive, on my desktop, I get:
"6/30/14 11:01:28.710 AM WindowServer[174]: disable_update_timeout: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Finder" for over 1.00 seconds. Server has re-enabled them."
"6/30/14 11:01:42.711 AM WindowServer[174]: disable_update_likely_unbalanced: UI updates still disabled by application "Finder" after 15.00 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds). Likely an unbalanced disableUpdate call."
What can I do to restore the finder and get it working again?
Edit in: running 10.9.3 on a 2010 Mac Pro.

On my MBP, I get the error "iCloud server not responding" in the iCloud section of System Preferences under Back to My Mac. My Mac Mini doesn't have this issue. Both are running Mavericks and on the same network. I can screen share over wifi but not over the Internet because of the above issue with the MBP.
I've spent way to much time with Apple's techs on this. Using another iCloud account doesn't work. Safe mode doesn't work. Using another OS account doesn't work. I do have iCloud setup on my Time Capsule router.

I can't left click in any apple apps in the main admin user. Other users no problem but problem too weird for me to track down
I CAN left-click in finder, system prefs, Safari, Pages, stickies and any and every thirt party app without a problem.
BUT, Mail, Contacts, Preview, Maps, Aperture, Notes, iCal, stickies I can scroll and right click but not select anything. Nor can I close or minimize windows.
CMD-P in an unresponsive app brings up the print dialog but can't choose any pdf options or any other options
Affected apps can be moved from the title bar but not resized , restarted multiple times, reset pram, trashed prefs of affected apps as well as bluetooth.

This has been happening on and off for ages, from half a year to a year. I have been trying to open a document for 4 hours now, it opens it and then freezes, i then have to force quit it and start over again. Some times i have left it for a while others i quit it after it stops responding. It is getting ridiculous now, i have also searched for ages on the internet, some problems are unrelated some seem related but the fixes don't work, I need to get word to stop doing this.
I thought maybe it was because it keeps opening all my previous documents that I had open, i unchecked the box so it doesn't reopen windows and it still freezes but on this document instead. I do not have a clue what to do and I urgently need access to these documents, the documents aren't damaged, i was working on them before, and had this problem with many other documents that also weren't damaged. What should I do?

13" Macbook pro (mid 2010) running Mavericks 10.9.4, Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 16 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256Mb, Crucial SSD 240Gb, Seagate Goflex Home NAS drive 2TB, Wifi network is BT Infinity.
Since upgrading to Mavericks, my macbook pro cannot see the Goflex Home drive on the network at all. I am confident that the problem lies within Mavericks as the Goflex Home drive can be accessed perfectly on the same network using my older PowerMac, my iPad and my iPhone. Also, the NAS is accessible via the internet through the Seagate Share facility.

Just got my MacBook Air back from a certified Apple repair shop - I'd had maintenance done, including upgrading to Mavericks (10.9.3). Plugged it in, started it up and never got beyond the startup screen - Apple logo and spinning wheel after 5, 8, 10 minutes...
Tried starting in Safe Mode, but once the load bar progresses about 1/5 of the way, the bar disappears, the wheel spins and then the screen goes black.

I have used a third party video converter (PavTube Video Converter) successfully for some time on my Mac Desktop using OS X 10.6.8. I have acquired a new MacBook Pro with OS X 10.9.4. Initially I installed the PavTube application from the install DVD. However it would not recognize video files on the MacBook Pro. PavTube sent an updated aplicatioin which I have downloaded and installed on the MacBook Pro. When attempting to open the application I was faced with a message that the application could not be opened because it was not downloaded from an Apple certified provider. What do I do to be able to use the application?

On 6/27 I upgraded from 10.8.x (don't remember which version specifically) to 10.9.3. Since then, my 2012 Macbook Pro has been crashing every 20-90 minutes - a complete crash/reboot. The crashes happen regardless of what apps I'm running - there does not seem to be a particular trigger. Upon rebooting, all of the open apps/windows reload and I get the standard "do you want to report this to apple" message. The only time it does NOT crash is if I'm not actively using it - e.g. if I let it go to sleep at night, it will not crash overnight.
Everything was fine before I upgraded to 10.9.3, and I have made no other changes to my setup.
The first thing I tried was creating a new user so I could see if the problem was isolated to my user account - the crashes persisted even on a completely new user. Next, I tried booting from partition and erasing the hard drive entirely, reinstalling the OS, and then choosing "setup from time capsule" - no dice; still crashes. Finally, I tried creating a new user and then using "migration assistant" to migrate my user info, and while the migration assistant itself worked just fine, it's still crashing.
(Unfortunately, my time capsule backup is from right AFTER I upgraded to 10.9.3, so that might be the reason that those "solutions" didn't fix anything)
At this point I would even be willing to start completely from scratch (at least I could import all of my documents, music, etc from my hard drive), but there is no way for me to force it to start "fresh" - if I boot from partition so I can erase the hard drive and then reinstall the OS, I can't get past the Disk Utility screen (so my only option is to set up from the time capsule!).

Motion 5.0.4 (from 5.0.3 )I
've gone through downoading from the App Store several times and it won't stick!
When I try to download the upgrade first, it downloads a 300Mb or so. When it finishes it shows it's installing, but it doesn't and then goes again to "UPGRADE". When clicking on upgrade again it starts dowloading the whole program (1.3Gb!).The upgrade never takes place. When opening Motion, version 5.0.3 loads. Then I try to upgrade again and it all starts again but never upgrades.

Just upgraded to Mavericks and have all current updates - went to open mail and got the following message:
Mail failed to import.
An error occurred during the import. Make sure you have available space in your home folder and try again.
I have a pretty "clean" Macbook Air - not much on it so can't imagine I'm anywhere close to not having available space.

I migrated my files to my new MacBook Pro laptop that is running on Lion. When I try to update iPhoto 11 via the app store, it keeps telling me to login to the account I used to purchase iPhoto. I never purchased iPhoto since it always had come free with my machines. In the app store it says that iPhoto is installed on my machine, but it won't let me update. I tried to download the update from the website but it ends up kicking me back to the App Store and then I'm at a dead end again since I didn't use my account to originally purchase iPhoto.
