MacBook Pro :: Accessing External HDD?

Sep 9, 2010

I ordered the Momentus XT and I will be using current 500gb 7200 drive in an external firewire case. If I take current drive out and throw it in the case, what will be accessible on it through firewire?

OS X :: Accessing External Drive Across Network?

Nov 20, 2008

I recently got a MacBook to replace my Toshiba WinXP machine. I use a Mini with 3 external drives as a server, to which the laptop is backed up. The drives are accessed using Sharepoints. With XP I had no problems backing up and accessing the files as needed. With the MacBook I bumped into a variety of permission errors when I tried to access the files from the server. I finally checked "Ignore Ownership" and that seems to have made the files available, but I still get the do not enter icon on the directories. Clicking on the directory allows it to open, but it is annoying. My wife has the same problem, first with her ibook and now with her new MacBook. It causes problems with certain applications, as well.

OS X :: Accessing Files Stored On External HDD On My Network?

Aug 10, 2009

I am having trouble accessing files with my brothers MBP (running latest v of leopard) from an external HD (FAT32 format) plugged into my iMac (also running latest leopard.) I have tried logging in as myself on the MBP, but all that appears is my main hard disk and my home folder.

It's very important that I have access to this drive!

OS X :: Accessing USB External HD Attached To An Airport Extreme

Oct 22, 2009

I have a USB External HD attached to my AEBS. I am able to see this drive within my own network, but I would like to be able to access this drive from the internet. Unfortunately I still use Windows computers, but they are the last to go everything else I have is Apple. My Drive is formatted in Fat32 and I read a post on here from March or May of this year that said I just had to open my computer and type the static IP address into the address bar, but I cannot get this to work.

PowerPC :: Accessing IBook Drive In External Case

Jun 9, 2007

So a friends girlfriend tossed, as in threw, her older ibook g4. You ask why? Well she was mad at it so she punched the screen and it cracked, so she gave it a quick toss because the screen cracked. So I get to be the one to try to salvage the harddrive. I have the ibook torn apart, my macbook, a macmini and an external usb IDE harddrive enclosure at my disposal.

So I tried to target it through my macbook by holding down T and booting up the ibook. Hard drive clicks and spins, but nothing mounts on my macbook. So I bought an external USB for the ibook harddrive. My macbook won't see it when connected. So does this mean a bad drive? Do the older drives have to be connected by firewire?

Applications :: Accessing Podcasts Library In External Drive

May 13, 2010

My MBP is running out of space and since I have a external drive that right now I don't use I'd like to move part of my podcasts library in the external HD. I have already copied the podcasts from the iTunes folder in my Mac to the External Drive and I have deleted the local copies. Now, I tried to add them to the library (File > Add to Library) but in this way it copies the file in my local hard drive. How can I keep the files in the external drive but make them accessible from iTunes like they were locally stored?

Applications :: Wirelessly Accessing ITunes Library On An External Hard Drive

Dec 9, 2009

My music and video library, totaling about 1.5 TB, is stored on an external USB hard drive. When I want to listen to something, I copy it over to my MacBook Pro (15" late 2009, 500GB hard drive) using iTunes. My home stereo is connected to an AirPort Express for audio streaming.

I can't really afford a TimeCapsule or an AirPort Extreme Base Station, either of which would seem to offer the most elegant way to remotely access my media library over WiFi (true?). Yesterday I found a Belkin Wireless N+ router at Costco for $69 that includes a USB storage port, and am wondering if it would do the same job for a quarter of the cost. Here are my questions:

1) Could I access my media drive wirelessly from my MBP using the Belkin N+ router? Is there another (better?) solution that I am missing?

2) Can I use iTunes to manage my library on the external hard drive, while also maintaining a smaller collection of audio files locally on the MBP's hard drive?

I'm not the only one in this situation! It seems Drobos and other RAID or NAS solutions are quite costly ... more so than an Airport Extreme.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Time Machine Accessing Files On An External Hard Drive?

May 25, 2012

I backed up my iMac desktop at work onto an external hard drive.  I can see the files, but they are all locked.  When I go to open, I receive the following message "The folder (whatever the name is) can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents."  I understand that the system I want to transfer to is different, but is there -- shouldn't there be an override asking for the password.

Since I am the administrator to both systems, I would hope I could see the documents that I created.

MacBook Air :: Speculation Why No HDD Accessing Indicator

Feb 9, 2010

So I was sitting around with my MBA and it froze, I admit I was a bit ambitious in trying to launch several things at once none of which were "nice" per se, but nevertheless, I didn't want to restart it just in case it'd start responding again. Now at this point, if I had an ugly as hell laptop from some cheap company (or even the more expensive non-apple branded laptops), there would be a light which flickers to tell me whether things are still happening or not, and when it stops I'd know, "damn windows has let me down again" or whatever it is that caused me to crash my laptop. But with the mac laptops, this indication does not exist and it is a minor annoyance, but nevertheless, it begs the qusetion, why doesn't it exist? Why is there no "activity" light on a laptop? Or the iMac for that matter? Or any mac? Is it a sign of "oh we're so responsive that you'll never need indication that we're not responding"? Because well that's just crap.

MacBook Pro :: Not Accessing Some Secure Websites

Jun 6, 2014

Have updated clock and Apple ID locations. For some reason I am not able to access some bank websites from my Macbook, I just get a "Safari can't open the page "xxxxx" because Safari can't establish a secure connection to the server "xxxxxxx". I can access these sites on the same network with my iPad. These are the options I have eliminated:

BROWSER: Tried Safari, Firefox, Chrome. all with the same result (different message of course).

MODEM: I have connected the Macbook to different wifi networks (home and at work) with the same result, so it is not a modem issue.

I currently write this post at work on a Mac Mini. The Mac Mini CAN access these websites without issue. This leads me to conclude that something deep in the duldrums of the MacBook itself is preventing access to these types of websites.Macbook Pro is late 2012 model running Mavericks 10.9.3..Work Mac Mini is running Lion 10.7.5

MacBook Air :: Accessing The Time Capsule While Traveling?

Mar 10, 2008

Question which emerged in a different thread [URL], but thought we should make a separate thread out of it.

The question is to know if (and if so, how) one can access the files stored on one's Time Capsule, while traveling on the road ?

Wouldn't it be great, given the small-ish capacity of the MBA's HD, to keep all your files (music, pictures, videos,...) on the Time Capsule and being able to access from anywhere in the world, as long as you have an internet connection ?

... similarly to what clayj described in the following and now "stickied" and "guide'ed" thread: accessing remotely the files stored on a MBP (or any other high HD capacity Mac) which seats at home through an internet connection [URL]

The MacBook Air video card is very limited to run HD movies, and when you run Parallels accessing a Vm, the video performance is very poor. I would like to know if installing Windows through BootCamp, could increase this performance.
1 - Any one knows if there's some advantage on installing Windows through BootCamp instead of Vm?

Note: One desvantage is that TimeMachine can not auto backup BootCamp partition, but it "yes" do backups the Vm.

OS X :: Accessing (and Controlling) One Mac From Another - Possible?

Jan 5, 2009

My dad went to Florida with his brand new Mac (also, new to Mac from PC). Of course, he now has all these issues and questions which he just can't seem to solve when we are on the phone (for example, he doesn't understand the difference between his Mac hardware, OSX, the Broswer and Zillow -- to him they are all "the internet," so phone support is very painful.) I'd like to take control of his machine and just install some software remotely and do some tweaks that he needs. I thought Leopard could do this, but I'm having trouble getting a help/source page on how to do this. Is this possible with just Leopard (i.e. without 3rd party add-ons) and if so, does anyone have any basic directions, or a link to directions, to do it?

OS X :: Accessing DVD-ROM Features On DVD?

Oct 3, 2009

OK, I run a MacBook 13in, OS 10.5.8 with the superdrive that came with the machine.

Really, I'm not stupid, and I actually do successfully troubleshoot stuff usually..

However, I am baffled as to why I can not access the DVD-ROM special features on my Disney DVD movie discs. (I actually installed Interactual Player for Mac thinking maybe I needed it, but I can't say it helped.)

I can play the movie, and my son can play the games, but their are printables on the disc that when I click on them it tells me to access these features, , insert your disk into a DVD-ROM drive.... OK, As many of you already know there is is only the one disc drive on this computer... I tried searching in the "folders" of the disc for any file format I thought would open in another application ( say a txt, doc, html, xml, etc) but none of those are the printable pages supposedly on the disc. I even tried to use my husband's PC (GASP!) but got the same answer.

I have read a little on what this is,and it has to do with file sharing on networks, or shared printers and such. I haven't done anything new that I can think of, so I'm wondering why it just started showing up. Could someone be accessing my network? It is a secured network with an AirPort base station.
