MacBook Pro :: New I7 With 7200 HD : Vibration And Noise?
Sep 25, 2010Just received the new Macbook Pro 17" with I7 option as well as the 7200rpm HD 500gb. The machine works great so far. However, there is a slight vibration I can feel on the aluminum in front of the keyboard and basically across the machine, though when I moved it from a glass table to a wooden desk it was much decreased. The machine is also much noisier than I thought it would be, though I did know when I went for the 7200 option that it might be noisier.
Is this normal because of the HD or I7 chip? I can return the machine and exchange it, but the anti-glare screen seems ok with no pixel problems, etc., so I don't want to look for trouble without a benefit.
Is it possible this is not the HD? (vibration and noise does seem to emanate from the left side-I believe it is a Seagate, ID starts with ST)
MacBook :: UMB Vibration Too Much/vibration Remains When I Run It On Battery?
Jul 22, 2009I know it might be nothing, but just thought I'd make sure. I've been using an Aluminum Macbook for a few months, and it's been working super great, well, until yesterday, I'm not even sure if it's been this way the whole time, but it's been driving me nuts since this morning. The problem is, I've been feeling a little vibration around the entire trackpad area, especially on the right side, it's probably coming from the HDD (Factory drive 160GB), but I really don't like it. It's nothing noticeable, I mean you can't tell the difference until I've told you about it or unless you've been resting your hands on it for a while, but the point is, it does exist. Now my question is- is it normal? Was it there the whole time? If it's not normal, should I be taking it to the store? I've never even opened up the bottom, ever, it's been as it was on day 1. I tried listening to it carefully while giving it a little shake but nothing seem to out of place in there, it still feels as solid as new, but the bottom line is, I'm going crazy. What should I do?
P.S. It's got nothing to do with electricity cuz the vibration remains when I run it on battery.
Mac Pro :: Replacing 320gb Baracuda 7200.11 Drives - Caviar Black / 7200.12?
Sep 20, 2010I want to replace my 3 year old drives before it's too late.
I have about 200 gigs of data, split between a pair of Seagate Baracuda 7200rpm drives I bought 3 years ago.
I am thinking on going with a single 500 gig drive for my data, and I can't decide between a Caviar Black, or a Baracuda 7200.12.
I have read that the Caviar Black have incredible performance, , but only for the 1TB since it has 3 platters.
How do the 500gig models compare between WD and Seagate? I just don't have the need for more. My OS and Apps are on the SSD at 23 gigs, and all the rest of my work/personal files take up about 200 gigs.
Which is going to be better, the Black, or the Baracuda? 500 gig models only.
MacBook Pro :: Fan Vibration Or HDD?
Jul 13, 2010first time post here and a noob question. I've had my MBP 2.4 i5 since early June and I noted a noticeable vibration. I'm not quite sure if it's the fan working or the HDD spinning. istat shows my fan running at 2000 on average both left and right, GPU and CPU temp around 38 on normal operation such as browsing on safari. The reason I asked is because my older MBP 2.16 C2D (3 years old) seem to not have this issue or characteristic. I would even notice the vibration with my hand resting on the desk the new MBP sits in. This happens even with waking-up the MBP from cold sleep. As stated, no intense app or tasks are involved, just plain browsing thru safari.

Sep 16, 2010I recently changed the stock Hitachi 250 GB 5400 rpm drive to WD 500 GB Scorpio black 7200 rpm drive.
Now it was perfectly fine, no vibration or noise, just like the previous one. However now about a week past, I can feel it vibrating and that equals to the vibrations i get when I put a cd into my drive. It is kind of annoying. IS this normal? I know the drive is faster in RPM but as WD said it equals to 5400 by noise and vibrations and it was fine just a week back. (BTW Im running on a battery).
There is one thing though that bothers my mind, when I changed the drive, there were those 4 mounting screws which I didnt have screwdriver for. I took it from my friend but I think I did not screw one of the mounting screws to the very end. Can that be a reason?

Feb 10, 2009I have the new 2.4 aluminum macbook and today for the first time I started burning cds and I noticed the whole computer vibrates pretty strongly. Is that normal? Also if i pick up the macbook and move it slightly while its burning it makes a weird noise. Is that normal also?

Sep 14, 2010its a 500gb @ 7200rpm just installed it and runs great some ppl complained of vibration and noise from the HD but i have NONE of those complains its super fast and quiet the installation was very easy and after installation i put in the SL dvd and restored from previous backup on my time machine, and it was like i never switched HDs.

Aug 18, 2009Around 2 months ago, the local AASP techs, working together with Apple Asia techs, finally agreed to replace the top case, fans, and superdrive of my uMBP. At that time, neither the tech nor myself could detect any vibration on the uMBP keyboard, and I took my uMBP home satisfied. After a month, I thought I was beginning to feel some vibration on the TAB key, but it was so slight I dismissed it as something psychological, perhaps even trauma from the previous episode which lasted for weeks. Now it's back with a vengeance. I treat my uMBP with kid gloves. I clean its whole surface every week.
I rarely take it anywhere. I've never bumped or dropped it. I've even bought an external keyboard and mouse so that I won't wear its keyboard and trackpad. In fact, I've even restricted my use of the 9600 graphics chip, preferring to use the 9400 as much as possible to avoid taxing the fans. I mean, if some/most keys were vibrating, then I could say that it could be a loose/poorly positioned keyboard/fan(s), but if it's only the bloody TAB key. I've gone through three fan changes and one top case replacement after all.

Also, when I have it on my computer, the vibration is noticeably louder. It gets really irritating because it sounds like it's echoing through your ear.

Apr 30, 2010I noticed from the start that there is a noticeable noise to it, not loud. But noticeable. I can feel some vibration under both my hands when typing. I have used one of my friends white mabcbook and this does not have any such noise to it. I did opt for the 7200 RPM HD and now my question is is the sound coming from the HD or the fans? The sound has been on constantly since I first turned it on. Downloaded SMC Fancontrol and it's showing 2000 RPM on both fans, but that's normal isn't it?So is there anything I can do? Oct 17, 2009My brand new MBP 13" vibrates.
It is a subtle kind of vibration, notable only as a ticklish sensation on your palms when resting them on the case, rather than a concrete, strong up and down shaking.
I wouldn't even mind, if my wooden desk didn't pick up the vibration, acting as a soundbox with an audible, deep humming noise. You probably need good ears to hear it, I only do in a quiet room (like, my home desk...). After a short while, the deep humming is joined by a subtle higher-pitched humming. This is when there is absolutely no activity (no programs running, just an empty desktop). I am definitely not talking about the higher fan speeds accompanying increased processor activity and heat.
Now I heard multiple reports of MBPs doing this, but never found an objective conclusion: Is that something MBPs simply do (it's still better than most laptops)? Should I, *sigh*, return the damn thing?
In other words: Is there someone who could confirm that he or she has a 2009 MBP 13" (standard hardware load, cheapest of the unibodies) that has no vibrations whatsoever? Please note that it's subtle and I only noticed it after a while (but now can't stop thinking about it).

Oct 3, 2010A couple days ago I upgraded my mid 2010 MBP 13 stock hdd(Hitachi 5400rpm 250gb) to a new one (Hitachi 7200rpm 500gb 7k500). I am still amazed by how much faster and more responsive system has gone.
Some change in noise/vibration was expected, but now I am starting to get a bit annoyed by vibration and HDD noise.
Vibration gets on my nerves- the levels are nowhere high, but there was no vibration in my stock HDD. In addition, the noise of the system on idle has roughly doubled- both fan and HDD are humming at the same level.
The system is still very quiet, but I could not help noticing it anyway. Is this normal?
I tried replacing the old HDD and found out that the problems were not present with it (=I am not likely to have made some awful mistakes putting the hard drive in).
Then I tried tightening all the screws as hard as possible and putting some rubberized washers on the corners of the HDD to ensure snuggly fit. All efforts rendered no change. Are there any other methods to reduce noise and vibration?
Furthermore, I still have one day to return the 7k500 without any loss. Should I get WD Scorpio Blue 500gb instead?
I have read user reports of similar problems with WD SB 640gb drives as well. Since these drives are essentially the same, I would expect similar problems with 500gb as well.
P.S. Is there any chance that the stock HDD is slightly "downclocked" by Apple? It does vibrate a lot inside external cradle. Furthermore, I tested a couple laptops in the local Apple store. Both MBP 15" and MBP 17" where equipped with 500gb 5400rpm drives.
However, MBP 17" was vibrating much more than the MBP 15" (maybe MBP 17 HDD runs at its native speed to increase the performance. The increased size of 17" makes the vibration effects less annoying).
The stock HDD vibrates just like the current one until after 1-2s after the power button is pressed- as if some sort of regulation kicks in after that point.

Mar 29, 2008Ok so I just bought this one, and it's really good.. One thing is quite annoying though... I don't know if it's really a problem or not so I wanted to see if others are having similar issues..Anyways..
By touching the alu parts it feels as if it's slightly vibrating a bit.. weird thing is sometimes it does it sometimes it doesn't... It's not bad but you know it feels kinda weird on the fingertips, So Is my keyboard defective or is this "normal" as in others might have the same issue?

As time went on, I began to notice that it would crash anytime it would be subject to some sort of disturbance or vibration. My brother and I did a few tests and found that after tapping or pounding the tower, it would crash. My question: what is the source of the crash? is this a hard drive related problem? This isn't a big deal since it is brand new. I can just get it replaced if need be but Id like to know now so i can take the proper precautions.

OS X :: Electric Shock / Vibration On UMBP 5?
Nov 3, 2009I took the plunge and got a MBP 13 (5,5) in October. Its all going well except for the same problem that recurs.
The problem is that when plugged in via magsafe i recieve a mild tingling throughout the shell. This first happened a week after I got it but I solved it by using the long lead instead of the smaller plug. But now even the longer lead which is supposed to remove the issue still gives me the same vibration/electric shock feeling. Its NOT minor, I feel it when its plugged in and it hurts! I get a headache when it does this.

Jan 27, 2008As a lot of people on these forums are, I am waiting for the next updated MacBook Pro. I want to get the fastest hard drive I can, but I want to ask the people who use the 7200 RPM HDDs if they can notice a difference, and if so how beneficial is it? Its really not a problem to pay the 250 for the 200GB 7200 option (and I do want to do that thru Apple because I want my hard drive under warranty) but I do recall hearing complaints that the 7200 RPM is louder, etc. So here is the basic question. How much faster is the 7200 and is it worth the upgrade? For background, I do Visual Effects/3D Animation. I use the Mac Pro for most of that and will sometimes use the MBP for that kind of work.

Mar 8, 2009I just wanted to do a quick writeup of what I've learned from upgrading my 2006 White Macbook from a 60gb 5400 Seagate drive (came with it) to the 7200 RPM 320 GB Western Digital Scorpio Black.
First of all, there's some discussion of whether the new drive vibrates, and the answer is yes it does to some degree. The 5400 isn't even perceptible, but the Scorpio Black makes the entire machine feel more like a computer instead of just a paperweight. (if that makes sense) Finder seems to work a little quicker now and programs load faster. I think the 16MB cache helps a lot in this respect (vs. 8MB for most 5400 drives.)
My computer has Tiger and boot camp beta installed with a split drive between Windows and Mac. I realized that I could not really rescue the Windows partition using Tiger, but apparently this is possible with a program called winclone on a Leopard machine. So I'm going to put the old drive into an external usb case for when or if I need Windows down the road.
Here's what you need to do this:
1. An External USB drive bigger than your internal drive (or with more space than the stuff you want to keep). Mine is 160GB.
2. Tiny/Jeweler size Philips screwdriver
3. Size 8 Torx driver. This is smaller than most sets provide, so you will probably need to go to Sears or a good hardware store and pick up one of this size for about $4.
4. a coin
A. Connect the USB drive to your macbook. Open Disk Utility and make sure the drive is formatted GUID with OSX Filesystem (Journaled). If you have a Windows files system on your external drive, this WILL NOT WORK.
B. Download Carbon Copy Cloner. Start up the program and start a backup from your original hard drive over to the USB drive. You may get a couple of error messages, but they probably don't matter.
C. Reboot the computer and make sure you can boot into the USB drive. You do this by holding Option when the computer makes the startup sound.
D. If everything looks good on the USB drive, you can shut down the computer.
E. Remove the battery with the coin.
F. Take off the metal L-shaped thing that holds in the memory and the hard drive. You need to undo 3 little phillips screws.
G. Pull the white plastic strip to remove the hard drive. Need to be careful at this point to avoid any static discharges, so take at least one shoe off and make sure your foot is on the ground.
H. Use the size 8 Torx to remove the hard drive carriage. Replace the old drive with the new one. Put the old one into the static bag.
I. Put everything back together. Note: when replacing the L-bracket, you should use a small flat-head screwdriver to stuff the memory buffer material back into their slots. Start up the computer.
Should boot into OSX, but you may have to hold the option key to get it to boot up. I've had this problem, but I think I may not have used GUID to format the disk.
MacBook Pro :: Which Has More Bang For Buck? SSD Or 7200
Jul 21, 2009Bang for buck wise which has a better speed to price ratio? I'm not talking about benchmarks, I'm talking about noticeable performance. I heard some people say that 5400 drives are so fast nowadays that even 7200 drives can sometimes be slower. Is this true?
Also, if it's a 7200 drive, is it cheaper to BTO straight from Apple the 7200 drive? Rather than buy aftermarket? (bearing in mind that I don't need the space of the two drives, so if I buy aftermarket the old drive will end up being unused )
