MacBook Pro :: Will A 7200rpm Hard Drive Cause Too Much Vibration/noise In 13" UMBP?

Jun 7, 2010

I am contemplating upgrading my stock 250GB drive in my 13" uMBP(June 2009) with a 320GB 7200rpm WD Scorpio Black:

[URL]

I was reading and some users have experienced unbearable vibration and increased noise, while some have not. I would live to be able to increase my HD speed, and am too poor for an SSD at the moment.

What are some experiences people have had with putting a 7200rpm in a 13" uMBP and would you recommend the upgrade?

MacBook Pro :: Upgraded HDD To Hitachi 7k500 7200rpm Annoying Noise/vibration Levels?

Oct 3, 2010

A couple days ago I upgraded my mid 2010 MBP 13 stock hdd(Hitachi 5400rpm 250gb) to a new one (Hitachi 7200rpm 500gb 7k500). I am still amazed by how much faster and more responsive system has gone.

Some change in noise/vibration was expected, but now I am starting to get a bit annoyed by vibration and HDD noise.

Vibration gets on my nerves- the levels are nowhere high, but there was no vibration in my stock HDD. In addition, the noise of the system on idle has roughly doubled- both fan and HDD are humming at the same level.

The system is still very quiet, but I could not help noticing it anyway. Is this normal?

I tried replacing the old HDD and found out that the problems were not present with it (=I am not likely to have made some awful mistakes putting the hard drive in).

Then I tried tightening all the screws as hard as possible and putting some rubberized washers on the corners of the HDD to ensure snuggly fit. All efforts rendered no change. Are there any other methods to reduce noise and vibration?

Furthermore, I still have one day to return the 7k500 without any loss. Should I get WD Scorpio Blue 500gb instead?

I have read user reports of similar problems with WD SB 640gb drives as well. Since these drives are essentially the same, I would expect similar problems with 500gb as well.

P.S. Is there any chance that the stock HDD is slightly "downclocked" by Apple? It does vibrate a lot inside external cradle. Furthermore, I tested a couple laptops in the local Apple store. Both MBP 15" and MBP 17" where equipped with 500gb 5400rpm drives.

However, MBP 17" was vibrating much more than the MBP 15" (maybe MBP 17 HDD runs at its native speed to increase the performance. The increased size of 17" makes the vibration effects less annoying).

The stock HDD vibrates just like the current one until after 1-2s after the power button is pressed- as if some sort of regulation kicks in after that point.

OS X :: Electric Shock / Vibration On UMBP 5?

Nov 3, 2009

I took the plunge and got a MBP 13 (5,5) in October. Its all going well except for the same problem that recurs.

The problem is that when plugged in via magsafe i recieve a mild tingling throughout the shell. This first happened a week after I got it but I solved it by using the long lead instead of the smaller plug. But now even the longer lead which is supposed to remove the issue still gives me the same vibration/electric shock feeling. Its NOT minor, I feel it when its plugged in and it hurts! I get a headache when it does this.

MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Vibration/why?

Sep 16, 2010

I recently changed the stock Hitachi 250 GB 5400 rpm drive to WD 500 GB Scorpio black 7200 rpm drive.

Now it was perfectly fine, no vibration or noise, just like the previous one. However now about a week past, I can feel it vibrating and that equals to the vibrations i get when I put a cd into my drive. It is kind of annoying. IS this normal? I know the drive is faster in RPM but as WD said it equals to 5400 by noise and vibrations and it was fine just a week back. (BTW Im running on a battery).

There is one thing though that bothers my mind, when I changed the drive, there were those 4 mounting screws which I didnt have screwdriver for. I took it from my friend but I think I did not screw one of the mounting screws to the very end. Can that be a reason?

MacBook :: Upgrade My Hard Drive From 500GB To 7200rpm Drive?

Aug 17, 2010

I have a MacBook (Mid 2009) and want to upgrade my hard drive to a 500GB (or maybe higher) 7200rpm drive. I have already upgraded the hard drive once, from the standard 160GB to a 320GB 5400rpm, so I already know how to do it.I just need more storage, rather than using external drives. Also, after I upgraded to the 320GB drive, the startup was much slower than when using the stock drive, so that is the reason for having a 7200rpm drive.

MacBook :: Shall I Fit A 7200rpm Hard Drive Into My Black

Feb 21, 2009

i bought high spec black macbook refurbished which came with a 5400rpm drive inside it.

Im using logic pro, and its been running fine with small projects, but when i have a medium sized project using several vst instruments and exs24s using many audio samples, all of which are running off the internal.... i get error messages, system overload messages...and i am unable to bounce to audio file (in logic pro)

im thinking its the slow hard drive which is causing the main problems.

I have 2gb ram. It also takes sometimes over 5 mins to open this logic file.

Or is this poor performance par for the course, if using just one internal drive, for both system files and audio storage....... ?

Are there possible probs which may arise from taking out the 5400 drive and fitting a faster 7200 drive in to my macbook? I hear it will heat up more....so could this mess with other macbook componets?? the excess heat...... or are macbooks bulit to handle 7200rpm drives too? dont remember is 7200 was an optional upgrade with my model or not......

2.4ghz intelcore2duo.

Anybody fitted a 7200 drive into their macbooks? all running ok??

Would i simply put the new hard drive in..... and then boot up from boot dvds and my time machine backup....to have a full up to date system, all apps and file intact as they are now? Im worried it will get messy and problems...... my current drive is packed to rafters with apps and files and work i have done......i dont want to lose a thing.....would it be a simple easy fool proof transition to faster hard drive?

And could i still use the current hard drive? With an enclosure?

Ive heard people have ripped out the opticla dvd drive and fitted ANOTHER hard drive into their macbooks, so the laptop housing two hard drives..... that sounds good...but crazy..... maybe later ill do that....as i hardly use the cd/dvd drive...... and you can always hook it up with wire if need be

MacBook Pro :: New I7 With 7200 HD : Vibration And Noise?

Sep 25, 2010

Just received the new Macbook Pro 17" with I7 option as well as the 7200rpm HD 500gb. The machine works great so far. However, there is a slight vibration I can feel on the aluminum in front of the keyboard and basically across the machine, though when I moved it from a glass table to a wooden desk it was much decreased. The machine is also much noisier than I thought it would be, though I did know when I went for the 7200 option that it might be noisier.

Is this normal because of the HD or I7 chip? I can return the machine and exchange it, but the anti-glare screen seems ok with no pixel problems, etc., so I don't want to look for trouble without a benefit.
Is it possible this is not the HD? (vibration and noise does seem to emanate from the left side-I believe it is a Seagate, ID starts with ST)

MacBook Pro :: Noticeable Noise And Feel Vibration

Apr 30, 2010

I noticed from the start that there is a noticeable noise to it, not loud. But noticeable. I can feel some vibration under both my hands when typing. I have used one of my friends white mabcbook and this does not have any such noise to it. I did opt for the 7200 RPM HD and now my question is is the sound coming from the HD or the fans? The sound has been on constantly since I first turned it on. Downloaded SMC Fancontrol and it's showing 2000 RPM on both fans, but that's normal isn't it?So is there anything I can do? Is this normal or did I get unlucky?

MacBook Pro :: Fan Noise Or Hard Drive Noise?

Oct 25, 2008

I just got my macbook pro yesterday and ran it all yesterday not hearing anything. Today when I woke it from sleep I could clearly hear the fan or hard drive going. I was in a quiet room and it's quite annoying.

istat says its at 2000 rpm so thats when I started thinking it may be the hard disk. It does pulse every now and then but thats even while it's just sitting idle.

I guess I could live with it but its just annoying. Anyone else having this?

OS X :: Replacing Hard Drive In UMBP 13 - Torx 6 Not Fit?

I have a problem which I couldn't solve for quite a while now. I bought a new WD Scorpio Blue 500 GB for my uMBP 13. I can't, however, figure out which screwdriver I need for those mounting screws that have to be removed in order to change the drives. I first bought a Torx 6 (Black & Decker TX 6) which is too big. I then ordered both a Torx 4 and Torx 5 from eBay. They are both too small... So what is wrong here? anyone had the same problem? Or any alternative solutions w/o using a Torx driver?

OS X :: Which Replacement Internal New Hard Drive For New UMBP

Jul 18, 2010

I have just got a new 17" i7 2.66 UMBP. It comes with a 500GB Hard Drive but I would like to upgrade it to one of the newer 1TB ones.

My reasoning is to have not only more space but create a partition so I can run both OSX & Windows.

I am not sure which brands are more reliable than others & who offers the best warranty or back up service. I would want the fastest & quietest one available as long as it will definitely fit inside the notebook. Reliability & good customer service from the brand is also important as I gather my Applecare will only cover factory installed parts?

Which brand & models should I be looking at and which do you all recommend? I am not sure but I think I need to ensure that any replacement drive does not conflict with the notebooks built in sudden motion sensor?

IMac :: I7 27" Vibration Noise Normal?

Dec 16, 2009

I wonder if this is normal:

My iMac 27" i7 with a 2TB Hitachi disk seems to vibrate. It is so strong that it also makes my desk vibrate a little. If I hold tight on the desktop, it stops. However, the noise/hum is clearly audible when I put the iMac on the floor, for example.

Apple is happy to replace it, but am I too picky? Anyone else with the same?

(FWIW, I'll describe the noise as if you mount a hard drive in a cabinet, and it isn't really fastened/isolated well enough.)

I tried the smcfancontrol and checked the fans, and its not them, the noise is constant even if I set them to max or min. And it disappears completely when the disk has spun down.

My Macbook Pro, Macbook, or other apple hardware I got with a HDD does not make this kind of noise.

How silent is your iMac compared to your macbook/macbook pro?

MacBook :: UMB Vibration Too Much/vibration Remains When I Run It On Battery?

Jul 22, 2009

I know it might be nothing, but just thought I'd make sure. I've been using an Aluminum Macbook for a few months, and it's been working super great, well, until yesterday, I'm not even sure if it's been this way the whole time, but it's been driving me nuts since this morning. The problem is, I've been feeling a little vibration around the entire trackpad area, especially on the right side, it's probably coming from the HDD (Factory drive 160GB), but I really don't like it. It's nothing noticeable, I mean you can't tell the difference until I've told you about it or unless you've been resting your hands on it for a while, but the point is, it does exist. Now my question is- is it normal? Was it there the whole time? If it's not normal, should I be taking it to the store? I've never even opened up the bottom, ever, it's been as it was on day 1. I tried listening to it carefully while giving it a little shake but nothing seem to out of place in there, it still feels as solid as new, but the bottom line is, I'm going crazy. What should I do?

P.S. It's got nothing to do with electricity cuz the vibration remains when I run it on battery.

MacBook Pro :: Clicking Noise In My Hard Drive?

Aug 30, 2010

I just bought a brand new MacBook Pro about 2 weeks ago. I'd say about a week ago I notice a clicking noise when I pick up the macbook or move it at all coming from the hard drive.

I finally took to the internet to find out what was going on, and got mixed results. Some said that it was normal for a Macbook Pro and that it was securing the hard drive so it didn't break while I moved it, and a vast majority said that the hard drive's failure was imminent. So what is it?

MacBook Pro :: Clicking And Beeping Noise - Hard Drive?

It used to do it every once in a while and I didn't think too much of it, but recently it's started doing it more, quite a bit actually. Is this something I need to be worried about? I'm thinking it is the Hard Drive, is that true? if so, then what? I am also getting the spinning beach ball a lot more often, for a good minute at a time. I am currently on the latest build of SL, the one right before release.

MacBook Pro :: 'Crunching / Grinding' Noise Is It Fan / Hard Drive?

May 23, 2012

I posted a YouTube video so you could hear the noise my MacBook Pro 15 inch laptop is making. Here is the link as well as the copy/pasted description I used on YouTube (too lazy to re-write) url...Two weeks ago my MacBook Pro started getting really hot on the back left hand side of the keyboard area -- to the point that I couldn't have it resting on my legs.It is now making a crunching noise from the same area. Sometimes it doesn't crouch and other times it's so loud it sounds like an expiring bomb. It doesn't have to do with how many programs I'm using. I just watched a full movie and it was silent on the crunch noise ... Other times nothing is running and it's just sitting there crunching away. Not sure if this is a fan or hard drive issue -- I've YouTubed other videos but my noise seems to be completely different from everything I've found.Heading into Apple tomorrow but I'm worried it'll stop making the noise when I go in, like the car whose breaks squeak until you take it to the mechanic type of thing.

It sounds like a fan but isn't... obviously. Right hand side of track pad, and covering it, in fact just touching it dampens it to barely audible. Is that normal or has something gone a bit weird? A constant fan noise, which isn't the fan is now there permanently.

MacBook :: Hard Drive Making Clicking Noise / Fan Is Pretty Loud?

Sep 26, 2010

I am so upset right now, this is my 2nd macbook with this problem. I just got this macbook yesterday and the hard drive is making a clicking noise, but it isn't a click....click...click... like a lot of people have had, it's actually more of a quick series of clicks every few seconds, almost like the hard drive is shaking. It goes away for a bit when I am typing, like right now, but after I stop it comes right back.

Also the fan is pretty loud, considering I haven't put anything on the computer yet.. I've already been to the genius bar and all they did was give me a new, worse macbook, so there is no way I'm going back. Are there any fixes for a noisy hard drive aside from voiding my warranty and putting my own in? If it is normal, I might just invest in a good pair on noise cancelling head phones... Thanks!

PowerPC :: Hard Drive Spins And Super Drive Make Noise - No Boot Up

Jan 7, 2010

My friend gave me his old Apple cube G4 + 15" Cinema display in like 1000 pieces. Its completely teared apart. I tried a lot, but it doesn't work. The original IDE cable wasn't included, so I bought one for 2 cents. It should work or not? Maybe the powersupply. I'm not sure. I don't believe actually that the hardware itself, like the motherboard is broken. When everything is into place and I connect the cube to the powersupply it boots immediately. I don't have to do anything. Harddrive spins and the superdrive makes some noise as well. This repeats itself every 5 seconds. The screen is connected and gets power through DVI, but no display. Both the cube and display have touch enabled buttons to switch it on, but they do not respond (I guess).. Motherboard gives 2 light. DS1 is green, DS2 is red.
