MacBook Air :: Limiting The MAX Fan Speed Via SmcFanControl?

Apr 9, 2008

I saw an interesting post today by pgharavi who says he is using SMCFanControl to set the max speed of his fan to 4000RPM:Quote:From the terminal:
/Applications/smcFanControl.app/Contents/Resources/smc -k F0Mx -w 60e0

(that's the default 6200 RPM)

/Applications/smcFanControl.app/Contents/Resources/smc -k F0Mx -w 3e80

(That's 4000 RPM Max)

I obviously gain a few degrees C when limiting to 4000, but at least my MBA shuts up.Not to question his knowledge but have others tried this and does it really work? might not go so far as to set the fan to 4000 (but I might). Given all the thoughts on Coolbook, what do you all know/think about this? Safe and effective relief from fan headaches?

MacBook Pro :: SMCFanControl - Quiting Doesn't Reset Fan Speeds?

Dec 9, 2009

I have a macbook pro, intel 2.4ghz core 2 duo, running snow leopard. My default speed for smcfancontrol is set to 4000rpm for both fans. I turn it on when i feel things are gettin a bit hot and I dont have my laptop cooler fan underneath.

I noticed something, when I quit smcfancontrol, shouldnt the fans revert back to default speed? I checked with iStatpro and saw that, even after quitting smc, the speeds of the fans are still at 4000rpm.After doing an SMC Reset, the default fan speed as stated by iStatpro is 2000rpm. As soon as I fire up smcfancontrol and quit it right after, the fans stay at 4000rpm. Even after i power cycle (reboot & power off/on) the mbp, the fans are still stuck at 4000rpm.

I feel this will wear out my fans a lot faster, I hardly ever need the fans at faster than 2000rpm because I use a laptop cooler 90% of the time.Is this a normal issue? Or a bug? Anyone else have this problem?

MacBook Pro :: SMCFanControl Only Display Left Side Fan Info?

Feb 18, 2010

Just bought a new base 15" MBP, running 10.6.2. At a glance, everything runs just fine. However, SMCFanControl 2.2.2 can only read "LeftSide Fan". As if the Right Side Fan doesn't exist.

Well, it could be that the app is at fault, but I worry if there is a hardware problem. Is there any quick way to check whether the right side fan is ok? (while running apple hardware test, I can hear both fans working). I don't live anywhere near Apple Stores or their related service center, so if there's any app to verify the right side fan,

Earlier this evening my Pro (OS X Lion) overheated seemingly randomly. I gave it time to cool down but had to restart it. Not too long after restarting, it started blaring a klaxonlike horn at me. I didn't know what to do so I just shut it down. It's working better for now, but we'll see.

OS X :: Won't Work With Temp / Overheated And Shutdown

Mar 20, 2010

Alright I am wondering what temperature the computer has too get too in order to shut itself off. what I mean is, at what point will the compute shutdown or crash before it overheats? I think my mac mini (07 model) is getting too hot and it shut off a few mins ago (not gracefully shut down more like someone yanked the powercord out ) and I think that the shutdown may be related to heat problems.

Can this happen?

Software :: Downloaded File Disappears / Unable To Find Downloaded Files

Apr 28, 2010

About a month ago, a friend who had just purchased his first Mac emailed me and asked why his Dock DownLoad file disappeared. I had no idea why. He still hasn't been able to reestablish it.

Yesterday, I downloaded something and my Dock DownLoad file vanished. I have tried rebooting, using (useless) Help, Spotlight, Search, and several other things. NO JOY. NO DownLoad file.

1. Does anyone know where to find DownLoad or how to bring it back?

I have experienced several idiosyncrasies with Snow Leopard, but when I call Apple support, they are very nice, but haven't a clue as to why it's happening.

2. Another problem is that the Highlight gets anchored on something in Mail, Word, and some other Apps. When I click somewhere else, the whole area between the "anchor" and what I click on is lit up. Apple doesn't know what causes it. I have to go through multiple machinations to shake it loose. I don't know what it is that causes it or specifically how to "shake it loose". Neither does Apple.

3. When typing in Word or an editor, there are times when the type changes to UpperCase and won;t let go.

Another problem is that, at times, when I click on a file, it fills the screen. Apple is aware of this problem and is trying to find an answer. Nothing, to date.

Apple support can't tell me why the MacMail Inbox spinner disappeared or how to get it back.

There are times when I can't access the hidden Dock. After rebooting and trying other things, the Dock finally shows up but any additions that I have put on the Dock are no longer there.

When I put a DVD in the slot, for the first few seconds, it grinds but does smooth out.

I thought that SL was supposed to get rid of the "foibles". "What happened on the way to the Forum"?

Is anyone finding other SL idiosyncrasies? What are they?

If anyone can help with items 1., 2, and/or 3. I'd be grateful.

BTW, Apple says that items 2 and 3 MAY be caused by the wireless Magic Mouse and/or the wireless keyboard; however, when I use alternates, it still happens.

Changed to open with DiskUtility didn't do anything. Firewall had no influence. When downloaded with Firefox there was NO problem and everything went fine like it use to do with Safari.
