MacBook :: Mail Cancelled Restart And Can't Quit Or Open Email
Jun 19, 2014
I am trying to do a regular update to my MacBook, it tells me I need to quit Mail before I can do it. So I close it and quit it but the little dot that says its still there won't go. I keep telling it to quit which it won't and the computer won't shut down because mail won't let it.
Also I can even open Mail now and it won't go in to its normal sleep mode. What do I do?

When I click "shutdown" on my MacBook PRO, I get a popup saying "Safari Cancelled Shutdown" then if I try to close Safari the "Quit Safari" is gray and none functional. Even if I let it set for several hours and try again it has not resolved. If I hold down the power button and force shutdown, then when I reboot it works fine for awhile then repeats the whole cycle. All software is updated.

My Mail app will not open, and now when I need to update my mac, it won't because it says the mail app "cancelled restart". Mail app will not open nor close. When I click on "Mail" at the top bar, the "quit" option is in light grey (not clickable). Mail is still accessable on my phone. Is there a way to delte the app all together (with out having to take it in) and re download.

wife cannot sign onto safari. shows the machine is connected, but clicking on the safari button on the bottom does not connect. Safari at the top of screen doesn't have the "quit safari" available. When I click on the "Apple" icon on the top of the page and try to either restart or shutdown; I get the error message, "the application Safari cancelled shutdown (restart)" I also have a MacKeeper little thingy on the top bar, but she did not install it.

I just set up my new iMac, migrated everything from my MacBook Pro, and everything works EXCEPT Mail. I have configured my MobileMe settings to synch everything, and online, everything is there: contacts, all old email, etc... but Mail doesn't show any of this stuff, nor will it retrieve or synch any of my email accounts. Also, I have to Force Quit it everytime to exit the program.
Could this be something with the Preferences file, or .plist file?

Mail is running in the background, but it won't quit or open. I need to reboot (i.e. hold down start for 10 seconds) to restart. Other applications are also very slow to respond during this, incl. Safari. I'm on a Late 2007 Macbook running 10.6.2, which I updated yesterday.

I have a first gen MBA. It is 1.6Ghz with 2GB of Ram. I am trying to watch the NCAA tournament on MMOD and the quality is terrible. It gets so choppy and I often have to quit Safari or Firefox and even restart the computer. It usually starts off ok but after a few minutes it becomes unwatchable.
What is wrong? I am not running anything by the OS and the browser. It isn't my internet as it makes no difference if I use wireless or ethernet and my download speeds are about 10-15Mbps. I don't have any problems watching streaming on my 5 yr old Dell.

I have recently found the problem that I open the Apple Mail app and nothing is functional. When I try to edit account settings it doesn't let me access those. I want to reinstall mail app or at least update its settings. I read in some blog that yosemite "guesses" and changes your prefered account settings so I wonder if that is the cause after I backed up my emails recently I had loads of messages asking for my passwords, which never happened in Mavericks.

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.3) (recentrly restarted as I thought it's going to solve my problem)Mail Version 5.2 (1257) (no activity running)No antivirus software Steps to reproduce:
1. Go to Apple icon in menu bar
2. Choose Shut Down or Restart (ticking the Reopen windows when logging back - this is actually the point, so manually force quitting every time cannot be the solution) - some of the applications will start closing and sooner or later I get the following error message: "You haven't been logged out because the application Mail failed to quit. To try logging out again, quit Mail and choose Apple menu > Log Out. To suit an unresponsive application, choose Apple menu > Force Quit (or press Command-Option-Esc.)" Currently I used the workaround to Force Quit Mail and then it works, even if I restart Mail before restarting or shutting down.

Anytime I quit Safari, it starts up again. If I quit it a second time, it will stay dead and won't restart itself. This includes when I am trying to restart my Mac; Safari and everything else quits, but then Safari immediately re-opens and cancels the restart (or shut down). I have to quit Safari a second time and then initiate the restart again. Why is this happening? Why might it happen with ANY app? I'm afraid it's due to something I did/installed to keep Safari alive, but I can't figure out what that might be or how to make this stop. I'm currently using Safari 5.1.4?

Sometime when some application hangs I try to force quit it and the process completely disappears from the Activity Monitor, but the little white marker under the icon on the dock remains and there is no way to restart the application. Does any one know of an easy way out without having the restart the machine? I have a 2008 MBP with Leopard 100% up-to-date on the machine. I tried restarting the application directly from the Application folder instead of double clicking on the dock, and I got "An unexpected error occurred (error code -600)" -- according to Apple, error code -600 means: procNotFound - No eligible process with specified process serial number.

I know that there are most likely a lot of these threads around, but I feel like I've tried about everything. This all happened this morning when I was about to open my itunes. It wouldn't open, instead an error popped up saying that it quit unexpectedly.

Is there any way to go about dealing with an application that has frozen (or results in the spinning of the 'beachball of death')...and then to top things off, decides to prevent you from force-quitting it as well!! Not being able to force-quit a stuck App is a major problem, because it means that I can then not log-out, restart or shutdown my computer...inevitably, my only option is to hold down the power button on my machine to force-shutdown!

For the last 3 days I will be in an application (safari 4,actually) and the app will give me the beachball. I have seen the beachball many times in safari 4 so I would just force quit the app. Well in doing that its still shown with the blue dot under it on the dock, aswell as in the force quit menu. I go to open another app (say iphoto or firefox) and I also get the beachball, and I try to forcequit the app, and it will not force quit. Only way to cure it is to manually restart my macbook pro. (I have a unibody 2.4 macbook pro btw_). I have repaired permissions. Deleted and reinstalled safari and ran weekly/monthly scripts via cocktail.

My imac will not shut off/restart or let me download the new updates because it says I have to quit the TextEdit first, but it will not let quit it. When I open up the TextEdit the Quit option is in a faded black/Grey color and does not do anything when I click on it.

I am running Mavericks 10.9.3.
I always quit out of all apps before doing a shutdown. I make sure that nothing, except Finder, is running when i shutdown. And, I do a full shutdown, not just sleep.
Yet, occasionally, the apps that were running before I quit out of them will restart when I turn the MacBook back on.

I'm tired of Mac Mail continued to quit with me, on and off. It's annoying. It's been going on for two months now and Apple haven't fixed it. The last time I reported it here with the diagnostic report, I didn't get any new replies back to fix this ongoing concurring problem, except for the first one. After two weeks or so, it returned. I know my diagnostic reports will be the same, every time it crashes. I can't even trash the bundled folder, since it's not listed. I didn't have this kind of problem on my old Imac years ago, when I've had my MacBook Pro for almost two years now.
