MacBook :: Alum - What Temperatures Does Fans Start To Actually Spin Up

Apr 10, 2009

i have a 2.4 ghz alum macbook and i was wondering at what temperatures does your fans start to actually spin up. i'm at 70C right now and it still hovers at +/- 2000 rpm just wondering if this is normal i used smc fan controller for a little bit but i decided that i would just leave it to apples default and use a laptop cooler if i really need the extra disccipation.

MacBook Pro :: Fan Not Spin Up At High Temperatures

Jun 11, 2010

I've recently uninstalled Fan Control and smcFanControl from my Macbook Pro, after trying them for a minute or two. I reset my SMC by using the method on Apples website (Clicking Shift-CTRL-Option-Power Button at the same time). It haven't worked it seem, as I have tried running some games and even at 85-90C degree, its not increasing its RPM. I don't wanna go any higher as I don't wanna risk the CPU overheating.

MacBook Pro :: Fans Never Spin Up?

Jun 17, 2012

I noticed that on my macbook pro retina, i never heard the fans spin up.

I tried Prime95 to stress the CPU, temperature went up to 98°c and the fans stayed at about 2000rpm...  I immediately stopped to avoid damages.

MacBook Pro :: Fans Never Spin Up While Under Stress

Dec 2, 2010

I was noticing a lot of slow-down while playing computer games on my MBP. My computer far exceeds the minimum requirements for everything, so I reckoned it must have been something other than a slow processor (2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo), low ram (4 GB) or a completely inadequate graphics card (Nvidia 9400M). The games range from 'Day of Defeat: Source' to the 8 year-old 'Return to Castle Wolfenstein'. After a bit of research, I came to realise that my exhaust fan is never speeding up past 2005 RPM no matter WHAT the load on the CPU is. To test this, I downloaded smcFanControl and ran CPUTest. As the CPU went from 50*C to 95*C, there was hardly any change in the fan's speed. The variation went between 1995 and 2005 RPM.

In order to keep the computer relatively cool when playing games or doing anything that is CPU-heavy, I have to manually increase the fan's RPM in smcFanControl. I find that setting the fans to the maximum, 6000 RPM, keeps the computer cool enough to process these games. This program works wonders and I've not had any slow-down in games as a result. However, I am worried that there might be something wrong with my Mac. Why does it not automatically increase fan speed when reaching higher temperatures? I've even reset my SMC (SHIFT-CONTROL-OPTION-Power) on start-up just to be sure I've tried everything. Any suggestions as to why my fan seems stuck at 2000 RPM?

MacBook :: System Will Not Power On But Fans Spin

Aug 17, 2009

I got a new macbook black that is not covered under warranty, the magsafe fried on it and it used to boot up but not charge the battery or show any signs of power from the magsafe so then I bought a new magsafe that connects to the logic board and replaced it and when I plugged the power adapter in it tried to turn on right away and then the fan spinned and the sleep light light up then it shut off right away and I didn't smell nothing from the macbook or logic board. The battery now charges and the light on the magsafe adapter lights up so I tried to turn it back on and it doesn't the same thing turns on and then right off just the fan spins and then the hdds spin lasts for like a sec or two. I tried to turn it on with the battery out and with just the battery in nothing swapped the RAM same thing went from two 1 gig sticks to 2 256mb sticks and then tried another two 2gig sticks same thing then I tried a different hdd and have the same thing happen? What I need to do to get this working and yes I tried a google search and every1 ended up taking it to apple and I cannot do that.

MacBook :: Overheating / Shutting Down - Force Fans To Spin?

Sep 7, 2010

Over the past few weeks my blackbook has been shutting down more and more frequently from what I can only believe is overheating. I just checked my computer upon startup with SMC fan control - it starts up at about 70 C and at about 3500 RPM. Yet, after a few minutes, the fan immediately drops down to 1100 RPM or and fluctuates between 800-1400. I try to force the fans to spin with SMC Fan control, but nothing happens. I've looked all over the web and I can't find anything definitive. I know that macbooks tend to overheat. What can I do? I'm at college and I really need to find a fix for this as soon as possible.

Software :: G5 Will Not Sleep / Shutdown - Fans Spin Up

Sep 10, 2009

I have a G5 that is about 5 years old. For some reason it will not sleep or shutdown. When I try to do either one of those actions it does simi-sleep/shut down, but not completely. By that I mean it sounds like the hard drive spins down but then fans still are running. After about two minutes the fans spin way up and the Mac won't start back up. I have to pull the power on my battery backup. I took it to the shop (Not an apple store) and they reinstalled the OS for me and put some new ram in. Supposedly they "Fixed' the problem.

MacBook Pro :: Fans Suddenly Making Wierd Noises / Fans Are Hitting Something?

Jul 27, 2009

the other day i wake up and open my macbook pro and immediately heard the fan making noises ive never heard it make before. i checked istat pro. the fans were going at 2000rpm. this is when i started to get concerned since i would never hear the fans at that speed before. the difference was day and night. it sounds like the one or both of the fans are hitting something. i always hear the noise when i start up or wake up from sleep and after a while (30 minutes to an hour) it usually goes away but has come back once without me turning off or putting the computer to sleep. its a refurbished less than a little more than a month ago. im hoping its just some dirt that made it through keyboard and will eventually go away because i dont want to send my machine in to get manhandled by apple repair. has anyone had something like this happen before?

IMac Intel :: Unable To Turn On System / No Fans Start Up And The Screen Does Nothing

Jan 25, 2007

My parents recently bought an iMac. Yesterday my mom was playing a game when the computer froze. Neither force quit or holding the power button was doing anything so in her frustration she unplugged the system. Today, after plugging in the system again, it won't turn on.

I press the power button on the side of the wireless keyboard and the green light on the keyboard turns on for about 3 sec and then starts flashing. No fans start up and the screen does nothing.

PowerPC :: Dead IBook (2001) - Won't Start Up - No Noise From Fans / Hard Drive

Dec 22, 2006

I have an iBook 500Mhtz PPC G3, 384 RAM, 10GB HD, Dual USB. Several months ago, I opened it up and it simply would not start up. No start up sound, no noise from the fans/HD/anything, motionless. Completely dead. I've held (many times) the PMU, and tried almost anything. Is there anything else I can do to get it to AT LEAST turn on? The battery is dead, and the charger is fine, but the battery won't charge. I tested the charger on a PB G4. I'd rather sell the whole computer as a working computer. I figured I'd get more money that way. do I need to sell it for parts?

OS X :: Alum Macbook And Mac Mini Won't Boot Off USB HDD

Aug 16, 2009

I've set up bootable external hard drives at least 100 times or more. Recently I purchased a Mac Mini and a Alum Macbook Late 2008, I had a WD 500GB portable passport that had two interfaces (USB/Firewire 800).

The portable drive was set up with four partitions, Leopard Installer, Leopard Server Installer, Intel Leopard OS, and Back Up. The drive had a partition scheme GUID which works best with Intel macs. Now here's the hickup, I managed to use this drive to install and troubleshoot Leopard on tons of different models. The weird thing is that when I tried to re-image my new Mac Mini with the drive via USB cable it would see the partition but fail to boot from it, but I was able to boot from the Intel Leopard OS partition with no issues.

MacBook :: New Speck See Thru Satin Hardshell Case For Alum MB

Dec 18, 2008

There's plenty of opinions on whether to cover your new Alum MB or let it go naked. My question is about the New Speck See Thru Cases for the new Alum MB... See Thru Satin and Hardshell Clear... If you have recently purchased one would you tell us how it fits on the new notebook. Particularly can you still tilt the lid all the way back like they claim? InCase claimed to be redesigning one for the Alum but nothing is out yet. Does anyone know anything about that? Are they really making a case for the Alum? I know the old Incase Hardshell's restricted the tilt on the lid. Anyone have experience with both, the new Speck and the old InCase? And what about all the claims about the Speck products scratching the notebooks? We're concerned here with the "New" ones. So who has bought one?

MacBook Pro :: CPU Load And Temperatures?

Jun 6, 2012

My 2009 13" Unibody MBP will overheat if I so much as look at it, or so it seems!. The issue here is that the fan will come on really loudly and the bottom of the machine will become unbearably hot under the following conditions:

1. CPU load = 20%, temp = 76 C, browsing the web

2. CPU load = 33%, temp = 77 C, watching an online video

3. CPU load = 35%, temp = 82 C, watching a movie on lovefilm

3. The lid of the laptop is closed, and I am carrying it in a bag

4. I am charging it with the lid closed.

5. Using an external monitor I have to keep the lid open and on battery use, otherwise it overheats and the fan come on loudly. Obviously if I shut it down there is no fan noise, however it still gets hot when charging.
