Feb 24, 2012I've just replaced an old MacBook Pro with a new one and used Time Machine to get the new MBP set up. All is well and it looks like my new computer is a mirror of the old (tested for a week now). If I turn on Time Machine with the new MBP using the same hardrive as the former, will the files remain and be accessible? Presently, I can only access the old files by going into the hard drive through Finder and even then, most are locked.Â

MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Makes Crunching Sound / Partitioned Drive To Install Windows?
Aug 28, 2009So I just partitioned my drive to install Windows and noticed that my hard drive is now making that "crunching" sound that some hard drives make. It started during my Windows installation, and it happens regularly in Windows.
I also briefly hear it while OSX is starting up, but it doesn't seem to happen much in OSX. I've launched a bunch of applications and it is still pretty much silent. Any ideas what could cause this? Could it be NTFS? I have several hard drives in my PC that don't make that sound. I am using a 17" MacBook Pro unibody with the regular 320gb 5400rpm drive that it comes with.

Jun 22, 2010When I start my macbook If I don't hold the options key it goes straight to an apple than circle with line through it. If I hold options key I get two hard drives one that says just hard drive one that says windows. Windows seems to work fine other than the missing drivers for the Ethernet, wireless airport, and a few others. I have tried everything. I for some reason cannot get to the mac side. It doesn't even show up and nothing relating to bootcamp shows up. I split the partitions 35G to windows the rest to "mac" side. I would be just as happy with installing the drivers if I could get them installed I know very little about Mac's and should have left well enough alone.

May 20, 2012I am currently making the switch from Windows, I can't wait for my MacBook to arrive. My lovely Dell currently has a 320 GB HD that would prove a very nice external backup storage unit. I plan to remove it and find a case to mount and use it as such!
Only problem is, I'm fairly certain that I'll run into some compatibility issues and have never used an external HD. I'm unsure of how the process works. This is the HD in my personal laptop (only PC I own), so it's not like I have it hooked up to play around with as an external at the moment.Â

Sep 30, 2009I'm having some huge problems. I have an .iso of Windows 7 Ultimate but my whole problem is that my macbooks dvd-rom drive crapped out on me a year ago so no burning no reading and Disc Utility wont let me restore the iso onto an external hard drive.
Does anyone have any idea what I could do to fix this? Is there a way I can put the image onto the hard drive at all?

Nov 18, 2009I have an external hard drive which I have successfully installed Windows XP SP3 onto. It was a long and painful process but I finally was able to get a modified XP install disc ready and from a Dell PC running Windows was able to install onto the external hard drive and I'm able to boot from it and everything. I did this on a PC because I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to boot correctly from an external drive in Mac.
Anyway, the hardest part is in the past and now my only problem is how to boot this external hard drive from my macbook, which is primarily what I want to use it on. I currently have a Macbook with three operating systems on it: Mac OS 10.5.8, Ubuntu Linux, and Windows XP SP3. I use rEFIt to boot into these operating systems. I tried using rEFIt to boot into XP on the external hard drive but it just gives me the legacy error messages saying that it couldn't load and noting the booting legacy os is not well supported by mac.

Feb 2, 2012I just bought my first mac (yay!) and am trying to transfer my files off of my old pc. The problem is that I stored all my personal files on an external hard drive, which is of course formatted for windows. My mac will open it, but it is "read only." I tried plugging it back into my pc and using the Migration Assistant to transfer my files over, but it was not detected (rest of the pc was).
However, the second time I tried plugging it in to my pc, it told me it would need to be formatted first. Obviously my mac has changed something on it, and now all my personal files are on a hard drive that is unusable by either my old pc or my new mac!

Jan 21, 2009Hi everyone, I have a big problem. Today, I noticed that my Macbook Pro was running a bit strangely, with some video being slow and stuff, so I restarted it while it was in Windows Vista through BootCamp. I came back about ten minutes later to see a black screen, and the computer still on. I don't know if it restarted or not. I tried hard resetting it countless times, and messing with the battery like letting it run dry and stuff, but whenever I keep turning it on, I hear the "dong" boot sound, but the screen doesn't turn on, ever.
No I'm wondering if a PRAM zap will help fix the problem, but I really don't want to lose the hard drive and the stuff I have on it. I have a TON of school and work files on there that I simply cannot afford to lose. Will a PRAM zap kill my Windows Vista hard drive or should I even go ahead with it? I really hope that I can fix this problem myself, because the nearest Apple Store (and Geek Squad place that supports Macs) is over 40 miles away, and I really need the stuff for school on Tuesday.

I run windows on my Black MacBook, and am starting to run out of room on both (its 1/2 and 1/2 partitions of OS X and XP) Is there a way for me to put my windows onto my external harddrive and then restore my internal to ALL osx? then, I could just plug in the external harddrive and hold down something at start, and then it would boot up in windows?

Jun 1, 2010I'm trying to access my WD Passport using firewire 800 on both Windows & Mac.
The current situation is:
I have partitioned the drive through Mac Disc Utility with three partitions.
1. Time Machine
2. Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
3. MS DOS (FAT32)
I can access all partitions when running the MAC OS.
However when using boot camp to lunch Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit) I cannot see the drive.
I've tried going into windows disc manager and can see the disc as an unallocated drive with no partitions.
What I want to achieve is to have the one external drive like this;
1: Time Machine (for MAC backups)
2: A partition for storing my MAC files on
3: A partition for storing windows files on (accessed while using bootcamp).
All without losing the existing backups on the drive.

Sep 1, 2009Got a new MBP last month to replace my white MacBook - loving it as an upgrade but one gripe - if I'm sat using it on my knee I regularly hear the "click" type noise of what I imagine is the protection of the hard drive because it thinks it is being dropped.
I never heard this on my old Mac and while it's not a huge issue it is a bit disconcerting, as though I'm being told off for moving it in a fairly responsible way.

If I move my Windows 7 hard drive from my PC to my soon to be here MacPro, how do I make it useable in OSX? That is, If I use bootcamp, do I have to completely reformat and install W7? If I don't have to reformat, any tips as to how to most effectively use bootcamp to run W7? Basically, if I have to reformat, I might as well keep it in the PC until my shift to Mac OSX is complete.
I am not talking intensive use, possibly only Quicken for windows until I figure out what program to use on the mac. Other uses might include office if there are problems using my PC files in the new Office for Mac when it comes out next week.
Or should I consider Fusion or parallels?
Windows On Mac :: Get Back Lost Data/lost All Hard Drive Partitions After Windows Update?
Jun 26, 2010I just booted into Windows and saw that there were some Windows Updates available and it asked me to reboot the computer however it failed to boot into Windows. So I restarted and tried to boot into OS X instead, but that didn't work either.
So I put in the OS X install DVD and checked out Disk Utility. Turned out that all my partitions where screwed up. There were 3 partitions listed as Windows_ldm, with incorrect sizes (I had 4 partitions before).
Long story short: I'm now reinstalling OS X and I lost everything I had on the drive, I think. I'll try some restore software once I've gotten OS X installed.
A little pissed right now... How the heck can Windows F up the entire drive?

Jul 27, 2009I have an aluminum unibody macbook from October 2008. I'm looking to upgrade the 160 GB hard drive inside to a 500 GB one I'm considering from Newegg. Would it be possible to migrate/copy/clone the entire contents of my current hard drive to the 500 GB one? I also have a section of my current hard drive partitioned for Bootcamp. Would this affect my ability to transfer everything over?
If this is possible at all, how can I go about doing so? If there are steps laid out somewhere, I'd appreciate a referral. Sorry if my question is a little elementary, but I did a search on these forums and also google and nothing really came up

Apr 24, 2009I am installing XP on my mac laptop and am not sure how much space to partition. The laptop's total space is about 235GB with currently 50GB free.
I will only be using Windows for a few specific programs: Autodesk: Toxik, Mudbox, Motionbuilder and Cleaner XL. I probably won't be using the programs too extensively either, I mainly use Maya and I have the OSX version of that.
Based on that info I was hoping to get a rough estimate on how much space I should partition for XP, I don't want to go too low and not be able to install and use everything but at the same time I don't want to put too much space on the XP partition either and end up with wasted space.
