MacBook Air :: Not Connecting To Wifi / Still Asks Me To Select A Network To Join?
May 19, 2009
Even though I have my router in preferred network list, my MBA still asks me to select a network to join. It says that none of my preferred network is in range, and only shows my router after I "refresh" the list by clicking on the airport icon. My UMBP connect to my network fine. Is there any way to also make my MBA connect to the network automatically?

My imac g3 with os 9.2.2 wont connect to my wireless network when its encrypted, it just says "an error occurred while trying to join network". When I remove the password it connects just fine, and when I switch to my os x partition it connects just fine with or without a password. Can anyone tell me why os 9 doesnt like the password lock?

My MacBook Air (2013 model, 1.3 Ghz Intel Core i5, 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3, OS X Version 10.9.2) which I received less than a week ago was working fine. Until last night. My latop will now not connect to ANY wifi networks. It's sees the networks but when I try to manually join one it says "The wifi network ... could not be joined" when I then run diagnostics it says "Wifi not associated" and "review wifi best practices".

I recently switched cable providers to Time Warner. They set up a Ubee cable modem and all devices (IPhone, IPad, AppleTV, etc) are all connecting to the wireless network except my IMac.  I tried renewing my DHCP lease, updating to OS X Maverick but every time I try and connect I get an error message that says "Connection Time Out".Â

I have a mixed Mac/PC environment - Macbook Pro (snow leopard); iMac 21 (leopard); 2 x Dell laptops (XP) - and an existing wifi network from a Belkin 8233-4 N modem/router. Also connected to the wifi network is a WHS for backing up the laptops; an HP printer; 2 iphones; an xbox 360; and a Wii.
I've just bought a 1TB Time Capsule to use to back up the Macs as my previous external time machine hard drive just died (which was connected via USB to the iMac).
At the moment, I've got the TC set up to join my existing wifi network (it's connected via an Ethernet cable from the Belkin wireless router), however I'm getting issues with the wifi network not working properly and being unable to connect to the internet. Every time you wake the Mac, you have to manually reconnect to the wifi (and sometimes even re-enter the password), and things work OK until the Mac goes back to sleep. When I go into the Airport utility, the settings say that the TC is set to create a new network, so I reset it back to join an existing network via ethernet, but then if I go back to these settings a little later (after having problems with the wifi connectivity), they have reverted back to create a new network !
What am I doing wrong ?

It's the strangest thing, my wife's MBA (v1) will randomly refuse to connect to our home wifi network (cast by a 500GB Time Capsule). What seems to be happening is that it will connect then disconnect at bootup, it will say no preferred networks are available (when the home network has been configured!) and refuse to assign an IP address to the MBA. If I manually select the home network from the wifi icon, it will diplay security password, and then say this is invalid (when it is perfectly valid and the one used by my own MBP and iPhone)... this seems to happen only on our home network, any other works fine...My own MBP is fine. This is driving me crazy and I haven't found anything on the web on this.

If my wifi isn't turned on, my MBP chucks-up a warning saying none of my networks are available. So I close the box and turn on my wifi. My iPhone will then, without any further input, connect to my wifi.So why does my 1600 MacBook Pro need me to reselect it from my wifi list? Why can't it just see it and connect to it?!

I recently purchased a Time Capsule to use as a wireless hard drive. I connect to the internet both through wifi and ethernet to a educational network that does not allow extra routers, etc, to be added to the network, therefore I can not use the time capsule for this wifi.
I therefore want to connect to my early 2009 MBP17unibody to both the academic internet network for http/pop3/ftp/etc while simultaneously connecting to external hard drive to store data/itunes-library/etc.
I expect this has been asked before but I can't find any threads where it has. If anyone knows it would be highly helpful. I'd prefer to connect to both wirelessly but I could potentially put up with connecting to either or both with ethernet.

This is a new iMac with Lion. The network is ok because all my other devices work fine with it. The network is in the list and when I select it my mac joins without problem, but won't join it automatically. I've also tried to move my network up in the list but that doesn't seem to work either.

I updated 1 of 3 expresses to 7.4.2. Using it to stream music with Airfoil suddenly stopped. Got it put back to 7.4.1 but it will still not join the network other than when it is connected via ethernet cable. Two other expresses work. Been to genius bar. This is doing my head in. Had wonderful full house steaming sound with iTunes or Airfoil. Have tried everything i can think of.
Has anybody else had this problem.
Is there a solution. I have reset it several times both hard and soft resets.

I a Macbook pro 15" running OS 8.5, and want to join my home network with computers running windows 7. I can't see the windows computers on the network, and want to be able to share files etc. The Macbook accesses the network wirelessly, where the rest are both wired and wireless.Â

MacBook. 2Ghz Intel Core Duo. OS Snow Leopard 10.6.6. I'm running a 2006 MacBook with Snow Leopard. A few months back it started dropping wifi connection. Airport would show no connection but would list my network along with others in my building. If I tried to connect with my WPA password it would just time out. At this time I was running Leopard.
Since then I've done a few things.Tried running the Netgear router with no encryption at all (same thing happens). Will lose connection and then time out trying to connect
I've tried the MacBook in a coffee shop with wifi access and at my parents (same NetGear router) and at my new apartment with a horrible Orange Livebox.
Taken the MacBook in to see the genius bar at Glasgow Apple store. Worked fine for them, but I explained it was intermittent but we could not force it to fail. I'm sure if it ran for an hour it would.
At present if I have the MacBook in the living room (where the Livebox router is situated) its fine and wont drop connection. If I walk some 5m to my bedroom it will work for approximately half and hour and then lose it. A few days ago I bought the Snow Leopard upgrade and installed it last night. MacBook runs a hell of a lot faster (yay!) but moving it away from the router and its dead as disco in half an hour.
So to clarify, the MacBook has been tested on 4 wifi networks/ locus with same issue. iPhone, Xbox 360 and PS3 all have no issues with dropping connection no matter where they are in the apartment.
Apartment is a new build and its walls are not made out of lead or kryptonite. Is this a hardware issue rather than software? When updating to Snow Leopard it was an update to the existing OS of Leopard not a clean install.
AIRPORT says the following in System Profiler.

System Profiler:6.0 (600.9)

I am trying to connect my Mac Pro to a wireless network which has no security settings. Other Macs in the house connect to the network with no problem, but the Mac Pro doesn't. I am setting up a new network as I have moved house. In the previous house the wireless worked fine on the Mac Pro.
When I click on the Airport Icon in the menu bar, the search wheel shows and it finds the network, but when I click on the name of the network typically it doesn't connect. Occasionally it does connect, and I briefly have internet access, but then the number of bars on the Airport Icon gradually reduce and then I can't connect again.
When I run Network Diagnostics from Safari, it finds the network also, but then typically asks for a WEP password for the Wireless Network when I haven't added any security to the network (occasionally it doesn't ask for a password and I can connect briefly)
I have tried resetting my Time Capsule and creating a new wireless network with a different name, but still experience the same issues.
I wonder if someone has any ideas as to what might be going on, and how I might be able to troubleshoot this.

I am trying to figure out how to automatically connect a MacBook to a network drive after connecting to the wireless network that the drive is connected to.
Here is the situation:
I back-up my wife's MacBook via Time Machine to an external hard drive that is connected to my Apple desktop. It works great! I even have her system setup to automatically mount the drive upon log-in. Unfortunately, after leaving our wireless signal and then coming back the time machine drive isn't automatically mounted since she isn't "logging back-in". Is there an automator script that can be built to automatically connect to drive X after connecting to wireless network Z?

I have just got my 1Tb time capsule and there are a lot of confusing descriptions of how to connect it.
At the moment I have just selected "join existing wireless network" which is a ADSL 2.4ghz G Router that came with my internet package (Thompson TG585 v7).
Does this mean that all traffic goes via the ADSL Router and that I will not be using the 5ghz band when I back up so that all the data will follow a path like this and have slow data rates? :
MAC --2.4ghz--> ADSL Router --2.4ghz--> TC
or will I be communicating directly with the TC at 5ghz for backups and data transfer and 2.4ghz with the ADSL router for internet like this? :
MAC --5ghz--> TC
ADSL Router --2.4ghz--> MAC
If this is not a good setup, what setup would allow me to get the full speed to the time capsule and be connected to the internet.

My daughter came to me with this problem and I am unable to fix it. Her account on her macbook pro has Safari and Google Chrome and both do not load pages. The wifi has full bars, but the websites do not load. At the bottom left corner on Chrome it says "Establishing Wi-fi Connection" but it seems to never actually establish the connection. On the admin account on her mac, everything works fine; this problem seems to only happen with her account. The wifi is ask great on all other electronics. I rarely use the admin account; it was only created to put Parental Controls on her account. However, now she has to use the admin account for homework and cannot use her original account. My daughter told me that this problem has been happening for a few months now, but it only happened occasionally and was easily solved by restarting Safari or Google Chrome. However, recently it has been happening a lot more often.

Let me preemptively state that I know very little about computers. This problem is most likely easy to fix, but I wouldn't know where to start. We have wireless internet here in my house, and my MacBook will not connect to it. It's a Netgear router, and my Mac tells me I need a password to connect to it. We don't have a password set on our router. So, every time it tries to connect, it says that an error occurred. How do I get rid of this password thing? I just want to use the WiFi!

I've recently been having a problem where by when I turn on or even return to my idle macbook Pro the wifi connection is lost. I then select the right network, it asks for the password however tells me its incorrect.
To resolve the issue I have to delete the wifi from the systems preference area, reset my BT home hub then once thats reset I have to manually add wifi each time.

I have a 13" MBP running 10.5.8 My wifi works fine everywhere except for my school.
The airport connects, has full "signal" and it seems to assign an ip. BUT when i open firefox or safari the redirect/authentication page that is supposed to open never does; instead i get "page not found" or its equivalent. So i can't login or access the internet obviously.
Here is the other part, there are about 40 or so macbooks in every class I have running leopard and snow leopard and no one else seems to have a problem.

I've been having trouble connecting my Macbook Air to public wifi in several airports (Denver, San Diego most recently). I select the SSID and get the signal just fine. When I launch Safari or Firefox, I see a redirect to an authentication page - but it never comes up - it just hangs. Using my iPhone and Safari, I can connect just fine. When the iPhone browser gets to the redirect screen, it comes up with a dialog box asking to accept a security certificate.
On the Macbook, I never get asked about a certificate. I can't find any settings that change this behavior. I am not blocking pop up windows blocked and I am accepting cookies. Any ideas on how to resolve this? I see lot's of other Macbooks in the airport browsing away so I know I must be doing something wrong.

I reformatted my macbook pro with Snow Leopard installed about half a week ago and it has stopped connecting to our wifi. The icon it shows for wifi is no bars with a '!'. It sees our Internet in the menu bar but fails to connect properly. I have tried resetting the PRAM, that does nothing. All other computers in the house can connect to it. I've tried turning the laptop, airport and our house's Internet off and on again. None of this has worked. Any ideas?

I have a MacBook Pro with OS 10.7 software. I am trying to connect to a WPA2-Personal Wifi Network with TKIP. My computer cannot detect the network but I know that there is not a problem with the router as my roommate's PC connects without a problem. I do not feel comfortable making changes to the router's settings as it does not belong to me but is there anything I can do with my computer to fix this?
