Oct 8, 2009ok so i have had my imac for over a year now, and the graphic card ram burned out a few weeks ago. i figured it was just because i was working it too hard. usually im running a second monitor, and almost constantly playing a video game on one with hulu running on the other. so i thought no big deal i have apple warranty for the next 3 years, so i took it into the store (which is almost 150miles from where i live). well a week later i went and picked it back up after they had "fixed" my problem by replacing the whole card.
but it hasn't been more then three weeks and im experiencing the same problem. i stopped using my second monitor when i got it back, so i have no clue why its doing this.
OS X :: Finding IMac 27-inch As External Display For Xbox 360/PS3?
Dec 22, 2009Today I bought iMac 27-inch. Firstly I planned to buy 21.5 inch, but when I saw this 27-inch I decided to buy it. I've got Core 2 Duo version.
So, I wanna to connect my 360 to this iMac. I have Mini Display -> DVI adapter and than DVI -> HDMI adapter and the problem could be sound. DVI does not transmit any sound. So is there option to play sound from 360 on my iMac or via headphones? What if I connect stereo cables (into mini jack using adapter).

Sep 1, 2009I happened to have a spare 23" Cinema Display and I rather than getting another Mac Pro to run it, which I already have, I am wondering if I hook up the 13.3" MBP, can I still run FCP in it?
I am thinking of using it more of a machine for importing videos in the background, while I run the actual video editing work on my Mac Pro?

I had a 11 inch air 1.4GHz/4GB/128GB for two weeks. I usually set the brightness to 75% and for consistent web browsing (no heavy flash) I can get about 5h15min battery life. I noticed someone here claiming 8+ hours battery on 13 inch so I decided to give it a shot.
I got a new 13 air with 1.86GHz/4GB/128GB yesterday and start to run on battery immediately. I was disappointed. The brightness was also set to 75% and I start to count the time from 25% while browsing MacRumors.com. And it only took 1h38m for battery descending from 25% to 0%. Again, pure web browsing and no heavy flash.
So here is my conclusion: On 75% brightness, 11 inch air's battery performs beyond advertised 5 hours and 13 inch's battery performs fair and normally should give you around 6h30m~7h.
Noise
I don't have equipments for measuring the noise, but while copying the same 10GB files from external drive to the machine, the fan noise from 13 inch is much louder than 11 inch.
Now I like my 11 inch more in general, although I really hate the 1366 x 768 screen. I don't know if I should sell the 13 inch or 11inch...

I currently have a G4 Powerbook, 15", 1.67, 80GB, 512MB RAM.I used to use Final Cut, but now only use Photoshop, iMovie, Dreamweaver, Flash, so I do not think I have any need for a MBP.Will a new MB be significantly more powerful than my old PB for all the tasks I want?

Due to this, a lot of people are getting the wrong impression that the 320M is faster than the 8600M GT, and that the 330M is 2x more powerful.There are several consistency issues which need to be addressed: 1) 8600M GT (DDR2) vs 8600M GT (GDDR3)While they both have the same name, there are actually 2 different variants of the 8600M GT card. One with DDR2 memory and one with GDDR3 memory. (Note: this is NOT the same as system memory) The GDDR3 variant is between 20% - 30% faster than the DDR2 variant. Majority of the 8600Ms tested used DDR2 memory, while all the 8600Ms in Apple notebooks use GDDR3 memory.

May 6, 2012I bought my Macbook Pro late summer 2011. Suddenly just a week ago it slowed down significantly, so I thought maybe if it was an update that had gone crazy or something so I ran an update check and installed what was missing and rebooted, and it went stuck on gray the apple loading screen. Then I booted from the Recovery HD and ran the disk check, found out that the Mac partition was broken and couldn't be repaired. I copied everything from to my external disk and formatted the partition and reinstalled Lion. Still runs slow and freezes though and I can't figure what to do.
It's something with the hardware, maybe overheat or something. Can't seem to run Hardware Test either, goes straight to the loading screen when I hold the 'D' button.

Oct 21, 2010To those contemplating on picking up the 11-inch MacBook Air or the 13-inch MacBook Air, I thought it would be helpful to list the differences between the two.
Below is what I've compiled so far (in no particular order):
1) SD Card Slot is on the 13" MacBook Air, not present on the 11"
2) Higher clock speed configurations on the 13" (1.4 GHz/1.6 GHz vs. 1.86 GHz/2.13 GHz)
3) 6MB of shared L2 Cache on the 13" vs. the 3MB on the 11"
4) 1066 MHz frontside bus on the 13" vs. the 800 MHz on the 11"
5) Larger capacity battery and an extra 2 hours of battery life on the 13" (7 hour 50-watt-hour battery on the 13" vs. 5 hour 35-watt-hour battery on the 11")
6) Slightly larger trackpad and more room for your palms while typing (hey, it's true!)
7) 16:10 1440 x 900 13.3" Display vs. 16:9 1366 x 768 11.6" Display
8) The 13" model weighs in at 2.9 pounds while the 11" weighs in at 2.3 pounds. .5 pound weight difference

OS X :: 32 Inch LCD TV HDMI Setup With 13 Inch Macbook
Oct 7, 2009I am trying to use my HD Sansui 32 inch LCD TV as a monitor for my Macbook. I can't work out how to set it up properly. My macbook is running OS X 10.5.8. My TV supports 1920 * 1080 HDMI 60Htz NTSC and various other resolutions. I am using a mini DVI to DVI adapter and then a HDMI lead to the tv. Problem one is that when I switch the Macbook on and close the lid nothing comes up on the TV screen (meaning it is supposed to only driving one screen, the TV). If I do this with the VGA connection it will. Momentarily the apple symbol will come up and the little circle below it but then my TV says signal not supported.
If I have the Macbook lid open when I switch the computer on both screens will work and I can select 1080P, however it is very grainy and not pleasant to read text. I think it looks better using the VGA. I have heard of people getting nice crisp display with HDMI so I am wondering if I am missing something? Is there any other software that can be used to get better results? Which text smoothing settings should I use? Are there other settings? I am using it on my desk so I guess it is about 2 foot from me. I will post my display details in a minute but my computer details are the following:

MacBook Pro :: 13" Powerful Enough For AVCHD And RAW Editing?
Sep 22, 2009I've had conflicting answers on this at the Apple Store today so I'd like to ask the question on here again. I would like to use a Mac for work and consequently would prefer the greater portability of the 13" model (plus it fits in my Tumi bag and the 15" doesn't).
However, at home the computer will be used for editing of AVCHD hi def movies which will be burnt to blu-ray. I will also use the computer for editing of 15mp RAW files from my dSLR camera. The computer will be attached to a 24" dell monitor so screen real estate is not an issue.
I want to emphasise that the video and photo editing are _not_ work related and are for my personal pleasure only (hobby).
Is the 13" up to the job? The lack of a discrete gpu is my main concern. One of the guys at the genius bar told me that without the discrete gpu Aperture 2 can really start to slow down and its quite annoying.

I mostly use the MP for PhotoShop/LightRoom but occasional I will use Premier and Maya for Video editing and 3D work. I was wondering if the new MacBook Pro is powerful enough to handle these tasks. Also with the inclusion of ThunderBolt I was hoping I might have the ability to add on fast external storage and even the ability to option boot other OS's running from and external. Also... how does one hard connect to the network with no ethernet connector... and will I be able to connect up my trusty 23" cinema display?Â

MacBook Pro :: Selling Powerful IMac For Retina?
Jun 22, 2012I am considering the possibility of selling my iMac to fund a retina MacBook. The screen really won me over when playing with it in an Apple Store. My iMac specs are as follows: 27-INCH, Mid 2010 Processor 3.6 GHz Intel Core i5Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3Graphics ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB256 GB SSD + 1TB HDD It is in flawless and mint condition. I am hoping to get enough to fund the Retina MacBook (around £1500), as I get HE discount. I have a 24" Apple Cinema display I can connect the Retina MacBook to. I will use it only as my home workstation, as I already own a 13" MacBook air. So my Question(s) are as follows: 1) Will the MacBook match the power of my current iMac (I like to edit photos, play some music, play WoW) 2) Is this move worth it, or silly? 3) How will the 24" display look when connected to the retina? Can I use this external display as an "extension"? 4)?

May 9, 2012I'm getting one for school and i'm going to have to carrying it aroound quite a bit, so the 11-inch seemed appeling at first, but then i noticed that there is a few pros to the 13-inch than the 11 inch: There's an SD card slot on the 13 inch, which i could care less about, the screen has higher resoulotion, which i don't really care about eiether, but the one difference was that the 13 inch has two hours more battery life, which kinda got me thinking towards the 13-inch. So what do you guys think, is it impossible to work on the 11.6 inch and should i go for the 13 inch, or should i go with the ultra-portability of the 11-inch?

I've been flip flopping between wanting a macbook/macbook pro/powerbook for a while now and I'm getting seriously feed up with myself. I've looked into text wrangler and it doesn't fit my needs because it can only do it on a file-by-file basis: I am looking for an app that you can point it to a directory and it does this process for all text files in this directory.
Additionally, if it could do two strings as a time (and group them according to the text file, so I could differentiate), that would be even better.
Does anyone know of an app that can do this? If not, is it possible this process be coded (javascript, php, etc)?
Mac Mini :: System Powerful Enough For Basic Video Editing
Oct 16, 2010I was wondering if anyone uses their Mac mini to do some basic video editing and mess with photos? My friend is notorious for shooting video and making DVDs of her video. I'm looking for her since she will be new to a Mac. She will basically be doing cutting and pasting of video, adding photos and music in the video, and such things like that. She will not be doing real intense graphics, maybe just having some effects that the video software provides. Question I have asked whether the Mac mini would be powerful enough for her needs. Would final cut be able to run on it in case she decides to get more into it?
