I have an external hard drive that I use to use with my old PC . On the external hard drive box it says its compatible with both windows and Max os x. I can pass files from my external hard drive to Mac but I cannot pass files from my MacBook Air to my external hard drive. No messages comes up or anything explain why it simply doesnt allow me to do so. What can I do?

Issue: Set up a separate user and trying to import information from a Mac Book that is having issues. Mac Book was backed up to an external HD via Time Machine
Question: Is it possible to use time machine to transfer some of the information (photos, music, files) from the external hard drive to the Mac Mini? Is it possible to extract the information from the hard drive by connecting it to the Mac Mini without using Time Machine?

Anyway, I have 4 internal 1TB drives that I need to zero out. One zero pass on one drive takes 3+ hours. I would like to do a 7 pass on each drive, but that would take four days (90 hours) by my count before I could ship it back. And I want my new Mac asap!
Question? The most each drive contained was 500GB's. Can I do a zero pass on a drive and stop it approximately halfway through (hit Skip button) and then repeat the (half) process over again as often as I desire. Will my half used drives and/or data be zeroed out multiple times. If so this would save me many hours of zeroing out half empty drives! In short, what effect does a partial zero pass have on a hard drive?
So I may have one of the Seagate hard drives that are failing badly. Haven't heard back from Seagate to see if my drive and firmware is bad, but since I just bought the drive, I'm thinking of returning it.I'm in the middle of a 7 Pass Secure erase on it (1TB). I wasn't required to sign any paper after that. Before when I got a replacement iphone or macbook charger, they both asked me to sign a paper. I don't know why this time is different. Also I heard that Toshiba hard drive is worse than Samsung's.By the way, I didn't erase my documents in previous hard drive, will anyone be able use or read them? I don't know a lot about how computers work, I just fear that some information may have been duplicated, and I need really need to free up a bit the hard drive.

This is the second drive in two years. The first one I was able to find a guy who recovered everything and put it onto disks. View 3 Replies View RelatedRecently I bought 2 identical WD Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drives for my macbook pro 13 inch 2010. My aim is to replace the internal hard drive with one of the two I just purchased and use it as my system drive with Lion, Windows and Data partitions. And for the other hard drive I want to use it as a full disk back up for the internal drive (now 1TB hard drive). After I was done with setting up both windows and mac and data transfer, when I booedt into the recovery partition from the internal drive to clone the drive to the external drive, the disk utility gave me this error (Could not validate source - error 254). I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner but it only could clone partitions, not the entire drive. Yesterday I downloaded a copy of Clonezilla. It worked fine until it had to clone an exFAT partition (my data partition). The exFAT partition appeared as 'RAW' partition in clonezilla. As a result, the whole partition appeared to be full and clonezilla had to copy every single blocks of data in that partition and the estimated time remaining was about 30 hours. So clonezilla is out too. Just want to ask if there is any program/application (bootable or not) which allows can do a full disk clone to an external hard drive.

with cloning/copying the content one an external hard drive onto a new external hard drive. Basically, I have a 500GB FW400 drive which I use to store my media files. It's full, so I purchased a 1TB FW800 drive to replace it.
