MacBook Air :: Remote Disc Not Working With Dell 420?

Apr 6, 2009

remote disc has worked previously between my daughters MacBook and my MacBook air, so I was not expecting any problem with my Company supplied Dell 420.

The Dell has a remote disc drive, and I suspect this could have something to do with the situation, but would like to know if I am right.

Basically my Air has no problem detecting the Dell and as soon as I "ask to use", the dell will show the pop-up, and I can confirm or accept that my air is allowed to use the disc drive of the Dell.

MacBook Air :: Ripping Leopard Install Disc Via Remote Disc

Jun 2, 2008

Well, my question is very simple: I have a MBA and this other laptop from work, a crappy HP which is old as hell. I'm planning to use Remote Disc to reinstall my Leopard, since the upgrade to 10.5.3 really screwed things here, and I can't figure out why. Point is: instead of running all Leopard installation thru Remote Disc, I would prefer to share Leopard disc 1 over Remote Disc and restore it to a partition on my external HD, making a clone of it, which would install *much* faster. Has anyone tried anything like this? There's any Windows program which allows me to rip a Mac DVD to a Mac partition?

MacBook Air :: How To Use Remote Disc

Apr 15, 2012

i just purchased a new MacBook Air and need to install my, also newly purchased, MS Office 2012 software. I have an iMac with the CD inserted and see the MacBook Air has a "Remote Disc" mount point in Finder. What I do not know is how to get the MacBook Air to see the CD in the iMac.

If I am interpreting "remote disc" wrong and would be better off mounting a USB DVD drive

Aug 25, 2010

I have the following:

Mac Book Air with 10.5.8
iMac with 10.6.4
Purchased 10.6 Mac Box Set

When I try to access and install 10.6 on my MacBook Air, I get the following error:

"The operation cannot be completed because the original item for "Mac OS X Install DVD" cannot be found"

I am trying to use remote disc on my iMac to access the 10.6 install disc. I used the the "Ask to use" option on my MacBook Air, and then selected "Ok" on my iMac to give permission. Despite this I get the above error.

MacBook Air :: Remote Disc Doesn't Work?

Nov 3, 2010

so when I try to use remote disc, on top of taking like 5 minutes to connect, when I try to open the audio CD in my PC laptop's disc drive, it doesn't work. It will just sit there for like 3-4 minutes and then tell me something about it not being found. I attached a picture of the message I get. What should I do?

Mac Mini :: Sharing Over Remote Disc (macbook)?

Apr 12, 2012

I have a Mac Mini (2011) and a MacBook (2006) I want to use my Microsoft Office for Mac 2004 CD on to my Mini using the Remote Disc option. I put the CD into my MacBook and click all the options and follow the instructions from the Apple Support 'MacBook Air, Mac Mini: How to use Remote Disc to share DVDs or CDs from a Mac or Windows-based computer' When I click Remote Disc on my Mini the MacBook shows up and when I click on that, the CD shows up but I can't open or copy the CD onto my Mini. I keep getting an error message which makes no sense.

Incase it was my MacBook (2006) running Leopard was the problem and it being to far behind my Mac Mini running Lion I used my mums Windows Dell Laptop which runs Windows 7 and again, followed the instructions. Same thing, same error message, which I was expecting because I know how Mac hates to open .exe files.

I don't know what to do to solve the problem, can it be solved? Is my MacBook and CDs just to old to copy and install on my Mac Mini, would a MacBook Pro 2010 and Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 solve the problem? I'd like to know before I save up and splash out any money. The error message says something like it's not supported even though we downloaded the updates the support thing suggested doing if we needed too and something about it can't read it because it's not there or you need to have it installed previously, well how could I have installed the on the Mini if CD it never had a CD drive, where else would I have got the programme from, I haven't found a downloadable version of Office Word or I'd have done that already, by the way, if you know where a full programme download is available?

MacBook Air :: Unable To Read Audio CD / DVD Using Remote Disc

Oct 2, 2010

I am using my MBA with an old Dell Inspiron laptop (running Vista) for the optical drive when necessary. I've installed software using remote disc with no problems (reinstall of OS, then Sibelius music notation software). I assumed I would also be able to read audio CDs or DVDs using remote disc, but every time I have tried this it doesn't work. The connection is fine, but the MBA is unable to find the data - one message I've had says it cannot find the original source (or something like that!). Does remote disc only work for software? Or might there be a way around this? I don't particularly want to use iTunes on the Dell as it's set up with my wife's account and even plugging my iPhone into it got it all confused.

MacBook Air :: Finding Fast Mac OS X Remote Disc Installation?

Jan 25, 2009

I've read many reviews saying that the remote disc installation takes 5-6 hours, so after loading the installation, I thought that I would leave it working through the night...

However the "time left" only showed 1,2 hours

In total it took me no more than 1 hour to get a fresh Mac OSX using Wlan...it's simply amazing in my opinion, I even don't know whether the external drive would have done it better.

So don't be scarde to reinstall it with remote disc guys, or waste money on the drive unless you really need it.

Software :: Use The Dell Win XP Home Disc To Do The Install On The Imac?

Oct 28, 2007

I have a new Imac and will soon install Leopard

I have in my office 2 Dell PCs that came with Win XP Home which were installed and activated, but are no longer used at all since I had to replace XP home with Win XP Pro due to office networking needs.

So, can I use the Dell Win XP Home Disc (which I really, no longer use) to do the install on the Imac and will Microsoft let me activate it? (I suspect I will have to call them.) I can get the Product Key Number off the side of the Dell tower. That would be a nice savings.

One more question, if I can't use my existing disc and have to buy a fresh Windows OS, would I be better off buying XP Home or Vista Basic. My real need to install Win is just to run MS Money and Word Perfect (I have Word on the Imac but all my previous docs are in WP).

MacBook Pro :: Dell Monitor Not Working As External Display / Screen Goes Blank

Oct 28, 2009

I have a MacBook Pro 13 for portability to my classes at the university and a Dell 2209WA as an external monitor. One of the few good IPS monitors I could find around for cheap.

The monitor works fine in mirror mode with the MacBook Pro, but as an external display only it does not work. It attempts to wake up and then you see power savings mode again and the screen goes black as if there was no connection. Not sure what exactly the problem here is. Drivers?

The monitor works great with a Mac Mini I have and it works great in mirror but not in external display mode(the lid of the MacBook Pro closed). Anybody know of this issue? The cable is good and the MacBook Pro is not that old(a few weeks).

OS X :: Trying To Configure Remote Disc On Mac?

Jun 29, 2009

My eMac has a CD-ROM drive (we will try and replace it in the future), but I am trying to attempt to install Mac OS X Leopard via DVD Or CD Sharing (a.k.a. Remote Disc). First, the configurations...

The eMac has a PowerPC G4 processor, and runs Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger, and connects online via AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi.

The two PCs I also installed the Remote Disc software on are...

Dell Dimension PC running Windows XP Home SP3, connects via Ethernet.

HP Pavilion dv7 laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium SP2, connects via wireless.

The eMac is on the same connection as both PCs are. I can access files from the Dell, but have issues accessing the HP.

Now anyways, I did the whole kit and caboodle install for the Mac and PCs. I checked off the "Allow DVD or CD sharing" on all three computers. I even tried the Terminal commands. can fix it?

MacBook Air :: Remote Install Not Working?

Jan 26, 2009

Been lurking around the forum getting some good ideas. I recently picked up a Macbook Air Rev A 1.8/SSD (couldn't resist at current refurb prices).

Anyway great machine but for one thing - I am trying to do a clean install but the remote install is not working for me via wifi or ethernet.

I have connected my old macbook to my MBA and I can see the dvd install disk. I successfully go through the whole process of restarting the MBA (holding the option button), the startup disks appear and I can connect to my home wireless network, I select the dvd install disk and click on the arrow button and my MBA restarts. However, it then does one of two things - restarts and goes to the desktop or there is a kernel panic attack.

Basically I don't get to the next stage where you select your language and go on to partition the drive.

MacBook Pro :: Can't Get Apple Remote Working

May 16, 2010

I just bought a brand new MBP from the Apple Store today, 17" one. I had an iMac, and did a transfer via Firewire of all my stuff to the new MBP. I then wiped the iMac clean and reinstalled Snow Leopard and moved it to my parents house. However the Apple Remote I had with the iMac, which was paired with the iMac, will not work with the MBP at all. I tried going into System Prefs on the MBP and pairing the remote, no luck. I tried turning off the infrared receiver in the same settings pane, no luck. I tried popping out the battery of the remote and put it back in, no luck. I then tried my girlfriend's Apple Remote (which is paired with her MacBook 13"), no luck. I turned off the infrared receiver in her MacBook to make sure it wasn't interfering or whatever, still no luck. Neither Apple Remote will work with my brand new MBP. Does it have a broken infrared port u think?
