MacBook Air :: FYI Failed Boot Of Knoppix DVD Required SMC Reset To Revive USB Port?
Feb 9, 2010
I had hooked up the MBA SuperDrive and wanted to see, just for fun, whether the machine could boot from a Knoppix DVD. (Knoppix is a Linux distribution that can run straight off the DVD without touching the harddisk.)
I tried and it seemed to work fine, until I got stuck on a blank screen. Oh well.
I switched off the MBA by holding the power button for >4 secs and it shut down. Rebooted, and noticed that the SuperDrive didn't make any noise. Once in OS X, I didn't get an icon for the DVD. Hmm. Hitting 'eject' didn't do anything.

I have a 2.33ghz intel Macbook Pro from 2006, version 2.2 I believe, formally running snow leopard. So yesterday my HD crashed, so I am attempting to use a Ubuntu Live Cd (I also have Knoppix too) to just see the HD and attempt to pull a few key files off the drive. The problem I'm having is that I put in the CD/DVD (I've tried both the Ubuntu CD and the DVD one found here, http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/dvd/current/, and Knoppix 6.2.1 CD)
Boot, Immediately press "C" or "Option/Alt", and it does NOT see a CD/DVD.
I tried inserting the snow leopard disk, and it will "see" that, (I am able to use disk utiltiy ect, off the disk), so I know that the DVD drive is working, and that I am at least doing the process of getting the computer to boot of a CD/DVD correctly.
However when ever I put any of the ISO burnt CD/DVD operating systems I have tried it doesnt "see" anything.
(I have tried a knoppix 6.3.1 CD, burnt off a windows machine, a Ubuntu live CD, burnt off a windows machine, and the same Ubuntu live CD, burnt off a mac, and now I'm downloading a Ubuntu Live DVD, and will burn it on a windows machine)
So my question is does anyone have any idea why its not recognizing any of these ISO burnt CD/DVD operating systems?

It's happened twice this month - my CPU fans will suddenly rev up to 4,000 RPM, and iStatPro will show the CPU temperature as "--". The first time it happened, I was worried that the machine got too hot. The second time, I had just sat down at the computer in the morning... the top of it was hardly even warm.
Both times, after shutting down and rebooting the fans went back to normal, but the computer performed poorly in graphical tasks such as rendering and gaming until I do an SMC reset, which brings it back to normal.

Often when I put my iMac to sleep in the evening I find the system unresponsive when I come to use it the next day. I can see instantly that the system has an issue because I see that the screen backlight is on. The system does not react to any mouse or keyboard input and requires a power off reset to restart.
I thought that the issue may involve Parallels which is often running when I have this issue , however, I have spoken with Parallels support who recommended removing parallels, repairing the disk permissions and reinstalling Parallels which appears to have had no effect.
The iMac is very new and was purchased in November 2014 and is configured with a 3.5GHz i7 processor, 16GB or RAM 3TB HD and NVIDEA 980 graphics card.

From what I understand, remotely accessing your computer is actually not that hard with osx - AWESOME.. but i am finding that it seems like its "too easy to be true? From what i read, all you have to do is go into your system preferences on the server computer and enable sharing and then download "Chicken of the VNC" app (or something like it) and you can access your computer at home?! What about a static IP. Is a static IP required? Or is there a different path to take directly to your computer?
Also, when you are accessing your computer remotely, can you actually use sme of the more complex programs? For instance, i have an iMac at home with Adobe CS4 on it and lots of big photography files on it. Can you actually open and edit those files on your home computer from a different one?

My Mac won't boot. It goes to the screen with the apple and loading circle, but doesn't go past that. I've got WIN7 installed on bootcamp, so I can access that, but when I hold down option, Macintosh HD appears as EFI BOOT. I've used disc utility from my installation disc. When I've checked the permissions, it has failed. It also fails normal verification, saying "incorrect block count for file temp555244.".
I was able to select repair disk once, but that failed as well. That would say "missing thread record (id=554666),
keys out of order,
rebuilding catalog b-tree,
stopped repairing because filesystem verify or repair failed."
Someone suggested I open terminal and enter "fscl_hfs -fy/dev/disk1s0" While it ran the common and gave me a bunch of what seemed like options (r to repair btree, etc) i couldn't do anything from there. I tried entering "fsck and then /sbin/fsck -fy" as apple suggests on their site, but that did nothing.
Here are my specs:
15" Macbook Pro, Mid 2009, 500GB HD, 4GB RAM, 2.8GHZ Processor Mac OS X (10.5.8)
I was having similar problems a few days ago, when windows crashed as I was transferring files across partitions using macdrives. I had snow leopard when that happened, and reinstalled leopard. It worked fine after the reinstall, but the next day I started having these problems, which are similar in nature to the inital ones.

I print my business cards from Word, using my Macbook. I use the Avery Ivory Matte business card stock, and really like the results. I like my design and have been using it for years. Lately, something is up: the cards come out dull. I've done this across several different printers, so I don't think it is the printer. I have a new one now.
I tried using new cards, same deal; comes out faded and dull when it used to be bright and vivid. Could this actually be the Word document itself?

IMac with 10.7.3 and Seagate GoHlex 2TB external drive. Using the disk utility why is was not backing up.The Seagate is now asking the question "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required". The verify disk permissions and repair disk permissions buttons are not active. My reference "The missing manual" does not cover this challenge.

3yr old black MacBook has bad memory slot. Will not boot with chip installed. Tried swapping chips and slot 1 or 2 and its the slot. So at least computer works. What are the odds 2nd slot will fail? Is that rare? Is it just a bad solder connection on main board for memory terminal? Or some tiny hidden board trace or other hard to find component?

My Time Machine drive is failing according to Disk Utility. It's trying to fix it but is now stuck on: "Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required." It's been there for hours. How long should I wait before assuming that it's just hung and force quit Disk Utility / re-boot (possibly making the problem worse)? One answer I saw was "as long as it takes" but realistically, I surely can't just leave it running for weeks. There must be a maximum time before I should assume it's not going to work.

Recently my MacBook Air has failed to wake from sleep mode. The Apple illuminates on the back of the screen casing, but neither the screen nor hard drive actually wakes up. The only way I'm able to use the computer is by forcing a PRAM reset on restart (command-option-P-R). I've had to do this several times in the last two weeks.
The only things about my MacBook Air that have changed in that time period are:
- I installed OS Yosemite
- I installed and ran Sophos Anti-Virus
(The latter was installed to counteract a problem that I was having with my email address having been spoofed and sending spam. Sophos found two bits of malware in email data files and "cleaned" them up.)

Been troubleshooting this one awhile...I even did an Archive and Reinstall....my Ethernet port on my 2.16Ghz MBP won't connect to anything. I get an IPv6 address when plugging into a router, but DHCP never works and a manually assigned IP doesn't work either. Reboot into Windows and it works fine...I've tried removing the Ethernet port, and have futzed with all the settings trying to reset it, but no dice. Problem started somewhere around 10.4.9, I think...I'm on 10.4.11...I reinstalled to .8 and worked my way back up...never works.

the mac boots very slowly recently, but it went faster a month ago. I use Command+V to boot in verbose mode, it displays "[Icannot get audit control port", and then blocks. After waiting for about one minute, it goes on for Ethernet detection, etc. The "one-minute" bothered me a lot. Probably it's a hardware issue or not? Do anyone know what's it, and how to fix it?I have a MBP 2010-13#model, installed with Lion OS.

My macbook pro won't boot past the grey screen, I've tried reseting PRam, running fsck from single user etc to no avail. All signs would point towards a hard disk failure, but the curious thing is that it sometimes mounts in disk utility when booting from the install CD, so theres a little life left in it yet! I have fairly recent backups of most of my files, but there are a couple I've been working on in the past few days that won't be backed up. So my question is this - is it possible to copy files from my mac HD onto a external drive through the terminal/disk utility while booting from the CD.

Have a G4 desktop running 10.3.5 that I tried to combo update to 10.3.9. The update was stuck at 30% for a long long time. I just figured it might take awhile and took a nap. I awoke and there was an error message that the update could not be completed. It said to try the update again by downloading it and then opening the package manually. So I was going to do that but a bit later the computer froze up and I had to force shutdown.
Upon booting the screen didn't boot all the way; only partially and then screen goes black. I ran Disk Utility from Install Disk to try to Repair the hard drive. It said keys were out of order. Later it said repair couldn't be completed because of an error.
I am running the Mac now from a Firewire drive with 10.3.2. I want to update the Firewire drive to 10.3.9 and want to make sure the same thing doesn't happen.

About a month ago I partitioned my HDD, installed XP and then found no need for it and then erased the partition using boot camp.
I decided to install XP again, so I opened Boot Camp, and partitioned the HDD 69GB for MAC and 70GB for Windows. I clicked partition and then it was partitioning and then I got a message saying to restart my MAC. I held the button down restarted the mac, and then went to boot camp again to join up the partitions, but there is no option for that, I can only partition the HDD again. The thing is that the partition is created I had like 140 free and now I have 60...which means the 70GB is partitioned but nothing is on it.

I have a 24" IMac with a 1tb drive which failed to boot recently due to overlapping files, after some searching I found that disk warrior should do the trick. I started it real early sunday morning 4:00am and it's 11:00pm wednesday now it's been on step 6 that entire time pretty much. It's detecting overlapped files and it's currently on file 7056 will it ever end should I stop it it seems to still be going along lot's of people say just let it do it's thing but no one has really ever had 7056 or more files overlapped as far as I've read so what should I do?

I have a 320GB internal drive on my Intel Mac Mini. I tried to make a windows partition using Boot Camp. After I dragged the slider to select the partition size (100GB) and hit 'next' it didn't work. A message came up and basically said it failed. I don't remember what the message was exactly, something like "Verification failed. Some files could not be moved." But now, my Mini thinks it only has a 220GB drive. I open Disk Utility and I tried to reformat but it will only go to 220GB. It seems I lost the other 100GB.

I just purchased a new iMac (2.66 c2d & 4gb of ram), Parallels 4, and Windows XP. I would like to get great performance whenever I use Windows XP and would like to know which installation procedure would help accomplish that.
Would Parallels provide me with a better user experience by installing Windows directly via Parallels OR by having Parallels utilizing a Boot Camp Partition? Which is better and why? Also, how much memory should I allocate to Parallels/Windows XP?

Am I doing something wrong or is there another version of AHT that is available as a download that will work?

Just ordered an intel 80gig SSD for my first gen MP. Are there any downsides to putting it in my second optical bay to boot from? I'd rather use the regular HD bays for my other 3.5in drives. That and I won't need an Icydock for the SSD. And no I will not be using Windows, only OSX.

I then installed Leopard, made the new disk my Boot Disc, and quit the installer. Now, when my Mac starts and I type in my password (I am the only username), it keeps rejecting my password.
