MacBook :: 2007 Pro Won't Boot
Jun 10, 2012
My 2007 Macbook won't boot. When you press the power button it starts as normal, the apple appears and the spinning circle starts. Then the screen goes grey and it sits there. I have to press the power button to shut it down. I took it to a service shop who told me that the hard drive was dying so I replaced the old drive with a new ssd and a fresh install of Lion. No difference. Still won't start. I refreshed the PRAM but made no difference.

A friend of mine ran into the most surprising thing when he booted up from his MacBook. Instead of seeing the Apple logo, he saw a question mark - ?.
I told him to try and boot from his Install Disc 1 and it managed to as the Apple logo along with the busy progress bar was shown. Then the usual language selection. I told him to select startup disk from the utilities menu and he said that all he could see is network startup and the Mac OS install disk. Even when he tried to repair disk, it said that it wasn't mounted.

I have a 2007 Macbook Pro and I just downloaded the new 3.1 boot camp drivers for it, so I can install them in Windows 7.
I've tried running the installer as Administrator but the installation procedure doesn't start and Windows comes up with a message saying that it didn't install correctly.
Whats the trick to getting things to work? I already had to rebuild the Windows 7 install ISO to get past the EFI issues, so I'm wondering whether my machine is not supported.
Presently, I'm using the drivers from my Snow Leopard install DVD which I had to decompress and install one by one. Everything but the track pad seems to be working OK, but it would be nice to get that last thing working.

All I get is the grey screen and the little circle with the rotating fan blades. Then they stop spinning and it just hangs.
I cannot boot up. Is this a bad hard drive? Â Are there other keys I could hit to make something work?

I upgraded the RAM in my Macbook (late 2007) and the computer won't boot. I have power but no video display. I put the old RAM back in and it worked fine. I was careful to order the correct RAM: DDR2 PC2-5300 667 MHz. Is it possible the memory is bad?

There's some known documented issues concerning the Nvidia graphics chip in the particular model of macbook pro I have.
Basically when turning on the machine, the screen is filled with black & white horizontal strips like a piano keyboard, but thats it - it doesn't actually boot up fully at all, you cannot hear the hard drive running !
Would the hard drive have anything to do with this ?
I explained this to apple telephone support & they informed of the article
[URL]
[URL]
& stated that the symptoms were linked.
On taking the mac to an apple store they ran a special 'firmware' boot up 'test' using an instore ipod to determine if it was a faulty Nvidia chip, so as to prove to Nvidia, the company funding the repairs whether it is that to blame.
Because the machine didn't even boot up & complete the 'test' they couldn't say whether it was the graphics chip - so 'no free repair' under extended warranty & the final answer was as usual ' buy a new logic board' that will cure it !

I know this is a fairly common subject matter but I have tried just about everything suggested but with no success. detailed below are my findings, I was wondering if anyone better qualified than me could suggest a diagnosis?
What does it do?
I hear the fans and hard drive and see the white/grey boot screen with the apple logo and spinning cog. The cog will spin for anything from 5 - 30 seconds before freezing. Some disk activity will continue for a short time afterwards before everything grinds to a halt?

So my girlfriend boss wanted me to fix her computer. So I brought it home turned it on, and it didnt chime but it booted to the gray screen with apple logo/ slashed circle/and folder with a "?" So I made a USB Mac OS x bootable drive (FLASH) held down alt (try using a windows keyboard its fun) was able to select option and install a fresh copy. all seemed well was running really hot so I poped of the screen. HOLY MOLY! this thing is CAKED with dust, and I am not kidding it has literally piles of dust. So I ran updates, and did firmware updates. Turned it off for the night. Â
The next morning I went to radio shack and got Dust remove spray, opened it up made sure I was carful taking off the screen, and blew the sucker out. now its NICE and CLEAN. then i made sure I plugged everything in and turned it on. Drive spun like normal, Optical checked for a CD, and fans are also running normally. but no chime, no nothing stays as silent as normal but doesnt budge, it is like it hangs. Â

How can I tell if my mid-2007 Macbook is USB 2.0 compatible? I don't see that designation when I click on "USB" in the System Information pane. Â
But I need to buy an external hard drive, and the ones I like say they're USB 2.0 or 3.0.Â

I am looking to hook up my 2007 Macbook Pro (2.4 Ghz 15 Inch Screen) to my sony bravia 32 inch TV. Seeing how this particular model of macbook pro, although very hardy and has lasted me through now, the screen at the bottom is cracked and will probably at some point snap (annoying...). Â
Anyway! Just a note to start, I no longer have my original display adapter that came with my computer, it was lost at some point in the move out of my parents house and I do not remember what the hook up is. I purchased an SVGA moniter cable from radio shack since I can hook that up to my TV. I then went to the PX here on base and purchased a mini display port to VGA adapter for my computer, but alas I do not have this hook up on my computer (although the vga adapter end works, obviously).Â
This is what I'm assuming I need...can I get this to vga adapter?Â

It will read CD's and burn CDR but thats all. When I insert any dvd the lazer loudly slides back and forth then spits out the dvd after several minutes. Is there a solution for this, other than replace drive? Is UJ-85J-C the only drive that will fit? If not, what other drives fit?

I bought my 13" Macbook Sept 2007 and I've cleared it off and reinstalled everything once since I bought it just to keep it clean.
I haven't had any problems until yesterday (June 28, '09), I tried to start it and it won't go past the gray screen with the logo and spinning disc.
I've tried these suggestions:

None of these have worked. Tried the PRAM, taking out the batter and adapter and holding down the power key etc.

Going to buy me a MBP (first Mac ever) when they, hopefully soon, get updated..
At work at for studies i'll be using MS Word a lot and even more Excel!
Have used these programs in their Windows version for ages and i can't "afford to lose" the skills i've build with them, when switching to my new Mac..
Have heard a lot about the 2008 Mac version of Office isn't quite the same A's the 07 Windows version!
Long story short: Will i be able to - with no problems, lag or anything like that - run MS Office 07 from a Win 7 partition using either Fusion or Parallels?
Shouldn't that work exactly the same as on my current PC?

I currently own a Mid-2007 entry-level MacBook. It's 3 years old now (I bought it for university), so now at the end of my degree I'm slightly curious as to the notebooks that Apple have in their line-up right now. I could probably stretch, if I were to buy one, to the entry-level 13" MacBook Pro. My question is, and this is just curiosity - is there much to be jealous of in the current entry level 13" MacBook Pro, compared to what I have now? I upgraded the RAM to 2GB and the HD to 500GB in the one I have now, but still I get jealous when I see pictures of the MBP - should I be? Or is what I currently have now not too bad?

Installed Lion successfully on my 2007 MacBook Pro. First run went OK. Tried restarting and won't boot. No Chime... nothing. SMC reset and PRAM reset don't do anything. Sleep light comes on for split second, optical disk engages momentarily, then all goes dead. Screen stays black. Attempted start without RAM seems to indicate logic board is working. Getting repeating tones. Flashing light when I press and hold power is the most I can get with the memory installed.Â

Recently my battery health has dropped to 21% with only 79 cycles. I have tried calibrating the battery and have always done it at least once a month. Just this morning I was running on battery power and it shut off with 65% of charge left. I'm off to college in a month and am wondering if Apple will replace my battery even though I'm not under warranty.
I would take it to an Apple Store but unfortunately the closest one is an hour and a half drive away. Should I try calling Apple?

I thought I'd post my early findings. I have a late 2007 Santa Rosa MB in white, 4GB and 2.2 Core 2. Mine came with Leopard and still included the remote.
Anyway, I was a bit leery about SL, because this is a little older, but I did a in place upgrade, it took about 45 minutes.
I must say, things feel quite a bit snappier, even the graphics around the dock and windows. It boots up a little faster and seems to shut down pretty fast.
I've heard mixed things about things being slower for some people, but I can say this feels nicer. I'm still poking around to see what else has changed.
One thing of note, my Brother MFP's little control center app was removed in the process but the driver is still there. So I need to find how out how I am going to scan and stuff over the network.
Overall I am very happy with the upgrade, I'm just glad it's not slower.....

I tried installing Snow Leopard on my Late 2007 MBP with the installation disk I got with my 2009 MBP but I figured out that it wouldn't work because the installation disc would only work on the new machine not the old one. Anyway, now when I boot, I get the usual installation guide but the disk won't eject. I went to Disk Utility-->Eject Disk but it gave me a warning message that it couldn't be ejected because some applications were being used. I have no idea what that means and why it wouldn't eject the disc!

my old, mid 2007 macbook had a firewire port that I plug my HD I use for time machine in (it can also be used as USB as well but I prefer it use firewire since I have uses for the two USB ports). Anyways, this new Macbook Pro I have has one too. Except... the connection is smaller on my new Macbook Pro... So I'm guessing there are different connection sizes and I need a new firewire cable? I think my current cable has the same size that both connects to the hard drive as to my old macbook. What labelling would I need to find to find a cable with the bigger connection on one side and the smaller connection on the other
