Mac Mini :: OWC Mercury Pro 60gig SSD Versus Corsair F40 40gig SSD

OWC Mercury Pro 60gig SSD vs Corsair F40 40gig SSD

Installed in: MacMini Late 2009 2.53ghz 4Gig ram

A few of you may know that I had the Corsair F40 SSD a few weeks ago after reading some good reviews. I went ahead and purchased it at Frys for ($90) after rebate and with the feedback from everyone I took a look at the OWC SSD's as well. I chatted with customer service and they were very helpful and I decided to get the 60 Gig version.

I cloned using DiskUtility and ran xbench. I did honestly notice a slightly faster boot time with the corsair, i don't exactly know why. What's even more amazing is that MS WORD seems to boot the slowest of all my launch programs, even PS4. (that is true for both drives).

So if anyone is decided between OWC vs Corsair vs whatever brand..here are my results and my experiences.

The main reason I went with the OWC SSD is their customer service and reliability respectively. I have had no problems with the corsair. I actually might have stuck with the Corsair had they had the F60 (60gig) in stock.

Needless to say, I'm happy with the SSD upgrade.

Sidenote: I have a OWC Mercury External with a 1TB caviar black hooked up via FireWire800 and I notice my boot time is significantly slower if my drive is turned on at boot. I'm not sure how to disable the Mac from seeking it perhaps. I've just tried to get used to turning it on and off at boot.

IMac :: Corsair Versus Crucial RAM

Feb 28, 2008

I'd like to upgrade my 2.8ghz iMac from the standard 2gbs to 4gbs. I can get crucial ram for 65.79 and corsair for 55.90. I've heard that corsair has a very good reputation for desktop ram but don't know if this transfers over to laptop ram. Is there any reason why I would go for the crucial memory? Also, does anyone else know of any other brands I should look out for in the UK?

Mac Mini :: New Mac Mini Ethernet Versus Wireless

Apr 1, 2009

it seems loading webpages and downloading a lot of files at the same time, I thought the ethernet would be the fastest but its not.

This is very strange and my wireless on the mini is so much faster in loading webpages (no more inbetween stops) and its just overall faster.

It seems like using ethernet slowed down my mini like it was doing some tedious work to use the mini's ethernet capabilities or something.

Anyone else experiencing this? I've also tweaked with a lot of settings under ethernet, got the right ip address for it with the right port as well.

Mac Mini :: Mm Versus Mm Server / Which Is Best?

Oct 20, 2009

Hope this isnt too early as we are just getting info about mac mini server.

i have 3 devices/computers in my place right now that i would like to all run off the same itunes database. I.e. my ATV downstairs would be able to access anything from this database as would my MBP in my bedroom etc. My initial thought was to run a mini as a server where my itunes music/movies are stored and then my 2 computers and ATV can run off this single database via the mini.

But then i saw the mini server come out today and was wondering if this is a better option. now its almost twice as much money so i am not sure,

Mac Mini :: 2.53 Versus MBP 2.66 - Any Difference?

Apr 24, 2010

I have a Mini 2.53 I'm using as a HTPC and It's great. I also have a 17" MBP 2.66 which never leaves my desk. I do mostly photo editing. Anyone know if I'm gonna see much difference if I slim down to just the Mini? I'm thinking of selling the MBP for the cash.

Also, I can run my dual Apple 23" Displays on the mini and cant on the MBP.

MacBook Pro :: Mini-display Port Versus Mini-DVI Port

Mar 16, 2010

Relevant newbie to the mac world. I have a MBP late 2009. I bought a third party Mini display port to HDMI converter so I can hook the MBP to my 46" Samsung screen.

This works fine, no major issues here. However the picture is not great. I compared watching a standard definition TV show through the MBP then burnt it onto a DVD. The DVD (using the PS3 as my DVD drive, connected via HDMI) had superior quality than through the MBP.

Also the picture does not quite fill the screen. There is a small black border running all the way around the screen. Does not sound significant but when doing the same comparison as above, you notice the difference when via DVD the movie fills the screen. I have played around with the resolution settings. Those that fill the screen chop bits of the mac desktop off, so thats no good either.

So I am wondering why this is? Is it because the mini display port is not a DVI port, hence I am not getting true HD quality picture? How can I overcome this if at all. I'm thinking of getting a mac mini as a media hub/HTPC but want to ensure I dont encounter the same problems.

Mac Pro :: Mini Versus Displayport... Possible With A New Graphics Card?

Jan 5, 2009

Since video/graphics out is achieved through graphics cards with dvi ports...

surely a card with mini displayports would make exisiting mac pro's compatible with apple's new LCD displays?

Am i wrong?

Would this be difficult to do for a graphics manufacturer to do (forgetting that this obviously would be a card aimed mainly at Apple users and probably not worth the effort....)?

3) iMac #3 (upgraded to 2tb drive, but yellow tinge (worse) and gray line at bottom of screen
4) iMac #4 had bad yellow tinge (most of screen) and gray line at bottom of screen

Hardware :: Using Camcorder With Firewire: Mini DV Versus HD

Apr 16, 2008

I have problem connecting my camcorder (a mini DVD-based Sony DCR-608E) with I-Mac 20". Based on the many threads I've been reading, I guess it's best for me to get a new camcorder.

Am currently considering to buy a camcorder with a firewire port but haven't decided between Mini-DV based or HD. My main consideration is the image quality and cost effiency.

Anybody using i-Movie has any recommendation? Should I go for Mini-DV or HD? What are the upsides/downsides?

PowerPC :: Power Mac Dual G5 Versus Mac Mini Core 2 Duo

Feb 15, 2008

I am looking to get another mac to do some basic video editing and encoding. All the editing is going to be done in the mpeg4 format and once the video has been edited I am going to encode the video into H.264. My question is which will be better A Power Mac Dual 1.8Ghz G5 or a Mac Mini Core 2 Duo?

I am looking for stable set up that can handle encoding video for a few hours at a time. I am leaning towards the Power Mac Dual G5 because of how much more cooling it has however that said a Mac Mini with a Core 2 Duo running at 1.66 Ghz would also probabley work well.

All memory tests using even apple hardware test say that there is no problem but when watching videos or doing random taskes the computer hangs and the image gets distorted. Is there any way of making this memory work as I have seen that it works fine for other people in their macs.

Hardware :: Dell 2407WFP A04 Versus Dell G2410 Versus Dell 2209WA Versus Samsung F2380

Nov 2, 2009

I'm looking for a new monitor to go with my MBP, and I'm stuck trying to choose between the ones listed above.

The 2407WFP is a couple of years old now I guess, but it's the rev A04 version, which supposedly fixed the (few) problems with what was otherwise meant to be a great screen. It's an sPVA screen.

I've heard good reviews of the G2410, with its LED backlighting. It's still a TN panel and I hear so much bad stuff about them.

The 2209WA is an eIPS panel which I like the sound of, but it's smaller and lower resolution.

The F2380 is a cPVA panel, the image quality looks better but I've heard bad things about blacks on this panel.

MacBook Pro :: Drobo Vs OWC Mercury Elite Vs Others

Oct 29, 2009

I don't have experience with setting up RAIDs though I've read a lot and don't think it would be too difficult. The Drobo doesn't do eSATA and I really want the fastest possible so OWC Mercury Elite beats it there. Still I've fallen victim to the Drobo gimmick where it seems really easy, does it all for you, but most importantly you can use any size drive and the Drobo does the dirty work. I'm not even sure what this "dirty" work would involve since I always thought when building an array you needed to have drives that are identical in model/make and size. Am I wrong? Can a cheaper OWC Mercury Elite like this be as user friendly as the Drobo? Are there other recommendations?

Barefeats recently reviewed the OWC Mercury Elite here but it doesn't compare it to other setups. In fact it say's in the article it won't provide blazing speeds without dedicated eSATA channels which isn't exactly a positive review. Still it would be faster than a Drobo. Am I missing any other options for the same price or less?
