MacBook Pro :: Remove Hard Drive - Install In External Enclosure And Install OS X?

Jan 5, 2011

My MBP was recently squished in a motorcycle accident and its hard drive and superdrive were destroyed. Is it possible to buy a new hard drive, put it in an external USB 2.0 enclosure, then install OS X on it using the discs that came with my destroyed MBP in a different Mac, then put the hard drive into the squished computer and have it use that hard drive as its startup disk? The motherboard on the squished computer is fine, I just can't install OS X on it because it has a broken superdrive.

OS X :: How To Install 10.5 On An External Drive?

Mar 6, 2008

I'm wanting to install 10.5 on an external drive, and I want to be able to plug that external drive into any number of Macs and boot from it. Basically I'm a freelancer and I want to be able to go in to any studio and have all my shit set up the way I want it rather than fannying around trying to figure out how somebody else has set up the Mac (you wouldn't believe how some of the machines are set up).

In theory it should work, but I'm a little worried that the Mac OS X installer will install a hardware specific installation (specific to the host Mac that I perform the installation on). So if I use a MacBook Pro to install OS X on the external drive, and I consequently use it to boot a Mac Pro, will it cause problems because the installation will only have the drivers for the MBP?

It's a retail version of Leopard by the way...

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Install On An External Drive?

Mar 17, 2012

I have read the discussions on making a bootable backup of Lion on external hard drive or a USB drive. I am not clear on whether I can purchase Lion from the App Store and have it download on an external drive so that my Macbook with 10.6.8 will remain as is. I want to test drive Lion before giving up Snow Leopard. I use SuperDuper and have a bootable Snow Leopoard on an external hard drive. Addendum: It looks like I may need to upgrade from 2GB of ram to 4GB before using Lion. My question still stands though.

Mac Pro :: Can You Install Your External Drive Inside Your Tower

I have a Mac Pro (Intel) and have 2 empty hard drive slots. I have an external 2TB hard drive that I would like to take out of it's case and install into the tower. Can I do this without ruining the external drives? Here is my concern: I own an ACOMDATA 2TB drive, Model DHD2000UFAB-72. It is actually 2 hard drives inside. Is there something in the external case that or motherboard inside the external case that helps them run together as one? If I put each one inside a separate slot in my tower will it work?

OS X V10.4 :: Have Tiger, Can Install Lion On An External Drive

Mar 5, 2012

I have an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo running Tiger. What I would like to do is install Lion on an external hard drive and have the ability to boot up using either Tiger or Lion as the occasion arises. Reason being, I have some software apps that would no longer run on anything higher than Tiger and would require $1200 worth of upgrades. While I plan to eventually make such upgrades (and perhaps buy a new Mac to put it all on), for now I'm seeking an interim solution. In short, I want to take advantage of what Lion has to offer in the way of increased speed and flexibility (especially with internet surfing) while at the same time being able to boot up part of the time in Tiger to continue to run my older apps when needed. So, can it be done? Install Lion on an external HD? Or do I need to install Snow Leopard first, then upgrade to Lion? Or is none of this possible without buying a new computer and just keeping my old machine to run Tiger with the older apps?

OS X :: Unable To Show 10.6 Install On External Monitor / Grey Box On External Display With Black Bar

Feb 27, 2009

I have a Macbook Pro 2.16 Core Duo, and I'm wanting to install 10.6, but about a year ago, I cracked my screen to the point that I cannot make anything out on it, and haven't replaced it. Instead, I have just been using it in clamshell mode, which has worked out fine so far. My problem is that I cannot get the 10.6 install to show up on my external monitor.

I searched around, and could only find one other similar thread that just ended with the author putting it in clamshell and having it work fine. When I boot to the install and close the screen, I just get a grey box on my external display with a black bar on either side of it. I can't seem to find any other resources, so I'm not entirely sure what to do at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
